[{Q}] My WiFi does not get picked up automatically - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

i dont know what it is, how to change it, edit it. i dont know
but when i have wifi spots saved, like my house, i want to walk in, and it connects to the wifi automatically.
my iphone did that perfectly.
i have like 5 diff. roms in my phone, and i switch back an forth with them, and all have that problem.
is there something im missing?

The fact that you're flashing between 5 different ROMs probably doesn't help with the phone in general. Iphone is the iphone......that's it, no fun. Mine does the same thing, if I leave the house (I normally disable WiFi because it just drains your battery to leave it on while it keeps scanning as you drive down the road) it automatically switches to tmobile data, once I get back home it stays on data, even though it's picking up WiFi.
I have to disable WiFi, then re-enable it to connect.

exactly.
i guess ill just disable it to save batt.

try going turning on the wifi switch and then hitting the wlan button in the comm manager
Of course, that doesnt help, it still goes off, if i do as u say anyway I can see its off by going to "Advanced" tab under wireless lan and it says under status Wireless Lan off
I am clicking to turn it on, its just now staying on
so is it working ??
its not working on mine either
Mine is not working either. If I go to comm manager (with switch on), it appears to turn on and then off within a second or two. A search for networks in my area returns nothiing (I am sitting one room away from an access point).

Sprint Touch Pro data connection issues

I've owned a Touch Pro for a few months now and overall it's a good device. It has its quirks, but then again what phone doesn't? There is one problem in particular, however, that I can't seem to figure out. I've searched up and down in XDA Forums, and on Google, and I just can't find out a fix for my data connection always turning on for no reason. I have all my e-mail accounts set to "manual send / recieve", the weather program set to "update weather manually", and as far as I know there are no other programs on my phone that have access to the internet without my permission.
The problem I have is sometimes I will wake my phone up from its sleep mode, and I will discover that the data connection is active and appearing to be transmitting. Also, EVERY time I restart my phone and it goes through the boot process, the data connection will re-activate even before TouchFLO 3D opens up on the today screen. It's really annoying, because I have no idea what's causing it to do this, or why it does it at random times, or whenever I reset my device.
Does anyone have any solutions to this problem? I hate having to manually go in periodically and make sure my data connection is set to "off", instead of having it stay that way when I set it.
So no help on this one then?
I don't have a solution but I can help by bumping your thread and saying I have the same problem on Verizon. I was at a friend's place all weekend, and he has wifi all over, so I turned off data and used his wifi instead. Well sure enough all weekend my data connection kept turning itself back on. It seemed to happen only when going into sleep mode. So I kept the phone plugged in so it would never totally "sleep". Wifi stayed connected with no data connection starting automatically. Annoying especially considering the 5 GB data limit on the PDA plan.
Well I'm glad I'm at least not alone on this one. It's weird too that even though your device is on a different carrier, it still does the same thing. I wonder if it's a hardware issue?
I know that someone has to have an answer for this...
go into pocket express and press menu then go to express settings then on the top left theres a pulldown press it and go into auto updates and turn it off.. pissed me off when i got the phone.. couldnt find a fix till i started going through all the programs to find the one doing it.. and it was the stupid Pocket Express
I have had my MDA Compact V for a few months now, and it's only recently that I've had the same problem. Each time I switch on, my data connection starts or alternatively if I loose signal then get it back then I see my data connection is on again. Thankfully I have the Solo 20 package with unlimited net usage (although you're are limited to 1Gb/month) but it drains my battery really badly.
I went through every possible setting and program to switch off location settings or auto downloads/updates and I still have the same problem, but I downloaded Data Controller v1.00 from Freewarepocketpc.net and I can toggle my data connection on or off as I please.
Heres what you need
Install below cab, then use the NODATA app, select what you want off, PHONE AS MODEM and DATA are your two options I believe... Your data will never come back on... until you re-enable it that is....
PS... THIS IS NOT MY CAB, THIS IS SOMETHING I FOUND WHEN TRYING TO ADDRESS THESAME PROBLEM YOU ARE HAVING. THIS CAB WAS DOWNLOADED FROM MoDaCo BUT I DONT HAVE THE LINK... ALL RESPECTS GO TO HIM... I AM JUST SHARING WHAT HAS WORKED FOR ME IN THE PAST...
Seems it's one or the other
What sucks is on my Sprint HTC touch pro 2 (cdma), I was having a problem where I couldn't answer calls all the time, but sometimes I could, and eventually found that it was always when the data connection was showing active is when I couldn't answer a call. But when that was happening, my data connection would turn back off after a few seconds when I was done using it. It was driving me crazy not being able to answer my calls and I finally found a post that let me correct that problem, it was changing the HKLM\Comm\ConnMgr\Planner\Settings\SuspendResume value that fixed this problem... the value of this registry setting was originally "GPRS_bye_if_device_off". This setting made it so the data connection would turn off when not being used, but it apparently messes up cdma phones from being able to switch over to answer an incoming phone call if the data connection is active. I changed this registry entry to "#777" as the post said to do, and sure enough, that corrected the problem with being able to answer my calls if the data connection is active. I'm real happy to have that working now, but when I changed this setting, my data connection is now always showing active (white arrows showing in status) and even if I turn it off manually, it comes on by it's self way more often than the every 4 hours I have it set to check emails.
There is a registry setting called CacheTime under the same Settings key as the above mentioned registry entry that I changed, that when the "GPRS_bye_if_device_off" value is used, the CacheTime key value will indeed control how long the data connection stays on before automatically turning off. But When I change the Entry to "#777" which is necessary to allow me to answer calls when data is active, then changing the CacheTime value has no effect and the data connection stays on until you manually turn it off.
I'd like to find a way to turn the data connection off, while still not messing up me being able to answer calls when the data connection is active, and seems to me that if both of these things can be done separately with two different registry settings, that it must be possible to do both.... so if any of you tech wizards can find a way to do this, I'd love to see it!
Possible Fix?
Hey, I have noticed the same problem. It is annoying from a battery life aspect as well as a system slowdown when coming out of sleep. I could not find much of a workaround except one of the settings in TD3 Tools I installed. In the "Data Connection" tab you can yurn on an option that makes your "End" key also terminate an active data connections. So if you hit it after waking your phone you won't have the annoying slowdown with your Sense UI...

[Q] Turn off data connection ?

Can someone please help me on this ,i hardly use the the phone for browsing but when i check my phone i can see that the mobile web is connected even though the phone is locked and not in use (standby mode) ,i keep turning the data connection off but it keeps on turning itself back on .
1) Am i getting charged for this as it's connected to the web,i am on payg ?
2) Is there a way to dissable this until i want to turn it on manualy for browsing ?
Same with me, I would like to permanntly turn off data connection but it will always turn itserlf back on, chances are that if you are on pay as you go then you are being charged for it.
I would like you know if there is a way to actually turn off data connection since I'm going on holiday soon and don't want to come back to a huge phone bill cause my phone kept turning data on
in the UK data plans are generaly pay per byte, not time connected, so unless there is actual traffic you arent paying anything. Of course, teh fact that an app is making a connection means something is using data, though not necessarily constantly; the hd2 seems to have an inability to disconnect itself.
I use Dialup Enabler/Disabler
The auto disconnect can be a little hit and miss, (you have to leave it running for the timeout to work) however the on/off toggles work a treat. Once a data connection is disabled, it stays disabled.
Cheers for the link ,but reading through the posts it is not very usefull and only works sometimes, as you mentioned it is hit or miss ,is there anything else about ,i have done lots of searching but cant find anything else ?
yea the auto timeout is hit and miss, but the toggles work flawlessly, and you say you want to be able to turn it off till you want it back on, , which works fine.
Ive been using it for 5 or 6 months, and never once has it failed. (I dont use the timeout function, only the on/off toggles)

Incorrectly using 3G when on wifi

Has anyone else noticed their Lumia using 3G when it shouldn't be e.g. at home with a working wifi access point?
Mine has done this a few times and because WP7 is so clean and simple it's pretty hard to see what's actually going on - there's no data counter. And to make it worse the data icon shows in the status bar even when wifi is on. Ideally it would show one or the other.
Yes, I notice that too. It could be a bug.

Yup, I think it uses 3G when the phone is locked, as the phone seems to disconnect from Wi-Fi when you lock the phone. Another bug that probably needs addressing.
Yes! This affects me too.
It switches to 3G randomly when I'm on wifi and kills my data without me realising (or shows failed page loads when I have full wifi reception).
It also turns off wifi whenever I lock phone which seems to disrupt/cancel all push messages! Push messaging just isn't working.
So is this problem unique to Lumia 800?
i've noticed this too. it'll also present me with wifi hotspots to connect to, including ones it should be connected to.
as of now, i don't know whether it's an issue with locked or unlocked handsets. my handset was bought unlocked with no branding, but i've noticed some of the bugs i'm having don't seem to happen on network locked/branded handsets.
It's not a Lumia thing, it's just how WP works. Turning off wifi to save on battery use I guess. Android has the same default setting, although it allows you to change it.
I can understand it using 3G for background processes, like you say Android does the same thing.
What I can't understand is it using 3G when I am using the web browser on the phone, and the Wifi icon is lit at the top of the screen.

That's not the case actually, before the firmware update I used to get my notifications, after the update, I don't, I think Nokia did it on the firmware update.
Which firmware was this working in btw?
Oh and turning off WLAN when you have an active connection does NOT save power. It only saves power when there isn't an active connection because the 3G uses more for retrieving background data (eg. regular email, social networking updates) and *much* more for retrieving heavy data. I have tested this on numerous Nokia phones.
^ i got the opposite result - normally i have WLAN turned on at all times, because it always connects to wifi at home and at work. my battery lasted much longer (it lasted the night with 39% left, as opposed to going flat sometime in the night) with just the 3g turned on.
I noticed that wi-fi only stays on after you lock the screen if the phone is charging. Otherwise it cuts the conncetion. Very annoying indeed if you are downloading big games over wi-fi. However I get my notifications and emails just fine in any case. Remeber though, windows phone doesnt support proper push, hence why they cant get skype to recieve calls in the background. Facebook and whatsapp push always comes about 3-4 minutes later than needed.
Another thing that i have been testing for a while on various phones (nokia n9 included, not the lumia because it's too unreliable) and also got mentioned in this tread is wi-fi vs 3g consumption.
So my results are:
with 3 emails 15-30 mins sync or push for one, at least one push service eg, facebook, vkontakte whatsapp etc (where possible)
i concluded that if you just leave the phone there for a day in standby and dont use it, it drains quicker with wi-fi on. Everytime. Every phone.
However when using the internet eg. browsing for half an hour etc. wi-fi uses a lot less battery than 3g.
So only use the wi fi when you need it and switch it off for background tasks. (WP7 does that anyway, for a reason)

Automatically turn wifi off when out of range

I would like to be able to automatically turn off wifi when I'm out of range of my home network. Is that possible? I see that many people have asked a similar question and it seems they want to do it to save battery life. I want to do it so that my phone is less vulnerable. I don't want it to do any location based stuff or searching for my home wifi so it automatically turns back on. I want to manually have to turn it back on when I get home. Anything like that available?
I've got a Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4.
Thanks
Nick
