No you have it backwards. It is much easier to ask for forgiveness than it is to ask for permission.

How about this. Parents don't give your children cell phones. If they must have one for safety reasons, give them a free cell phone that only makes 911 calls.
I'm sorry, but I consider any parent who gives any child or teen a cell phone as a bad parent. There is absolutely no reason a child or teen needs a cell phone, even if they earned the money themselves. If I have a child one day, my child will need to be moved out of the home, paying their own rent, their own car insurance, their own bills, then they can get themselves a cell phone that makes more than just 911 calls.
You can also bet for sure I would know my child is visiting online forums and I would know what they are posting. Too many children and teens have free reign these days, they do what they want, when they want, without any consequences.
And NO, making a deal with your children that they get straight A's shouldn't be a reason to get them a phone either. You're child should do their best in school to succeed in life and to gain knowledge, to became cultured, open minded and to learn, not to have mommy and daddy buy them things. Since when did bargaining with children become ok?
BTW, I initially misread, it appears this child above took the phone without their parents permission.

Why would you use your moms phone in the first place?

Na still bad parenting, if you have to give your child a cell phone to know where they are at all hours of the night, means you are a bad parent. Hmmm let me give my child a cell phone, so I can call him or her 3 in the morning to find out why little Tommy isn't home yet. Ya that makes sense.

You obviously didn't have the best upbringing, so shut up about parenting. People like you are what cause ass holes who move out and get DUIs and spread STDs across college campuses...

ok the kid did something and hasnt posted back . i figure its fixed and this thread about parenting is supposed to be dead.

Actually I had an excellent upbringing. Never got into drugs, never been in trouble with the law, I have an impressive education, and I'm an ethical and moral person.
I pay over a grand every two months for my LADWP bill, and several hundred dollars for gas, plus several types of insurance, phobe bill, tv, etc. If I ever have a punk child that thinks living under my roof is free, then yes, they will be kicked out of my home, they will learn a lesson. Let him/her go into the real world and realize that even water from the faucet comes with a price tag.
BTW everyone in my family was raised the same way, and my family is extremely successful, with many doctors and attorneys.
Except for my uncle who should have NEVER had a child, because he does not know how to parent. My cousin who is currently 17 does what he wants when he wants, without his father saying anything to him. He was kicked out of high school for selling drugs and nearly killing another student who overdosed from drugs he sold. This little punk cousin of mine sleeps in until 3 pm and stays out all hours of the night. He has been living that life for about a year now.
Took me about a month but I got that little prick straightend out. Told him that I am notifying the authorities that he is under age and not attending school despite his fathers wishes, and yes I was very serious. With the permission of his father I had his cell phone canceled, his computer is gone, he is no longer allowed to stay out at nights. He is now enrolled in his local community college in a program designed for high school drop outs, I told him he has no other option but to enroll, no negotiating. I have communication with the coordinator of the program and I'm keeping tabs on him.
Please don't tell me what is good parenting and what is bad parenting. He was a disgrace to our family and I told it to his face. If you want to act like an adult then you will be spoken to that way, you will get your ass out of the house and pay your own bills, and if it means you need to learn a hard lesson or two, then so be it.
Any man and woman can make a baby, but not everyone knows how to parent.

Dude... no offense but you sound like a douche bag... please don't have kids. There are plenty of reasons for teenagers to have smart phones. I for one attend a lot of competitions and events for school clubs and teams. The ability to look up information in a bus, navigate through a city, and stay in touch with chaperons and other students is vital during such situations. For example, this summer I went to Nashville for the FBLA national conference to compete in Network Design. I used my phone to navigate around the city, stay in touch with chaperons and the students, as well as find vital information, such as where you can get food without being mugged. etc.
But in all honesty, the OP is an idiot. Not for stealing his mom's phone, but for stealing his mom's phone and screwing it up.... The vibrant is one of the hardest phones to get into an unusable state...

You still don't need one. I have another cousin who was on her speach and debate team at school, she also was on the swim team, and is actively involved with our church. She was also accepted to and started school at Stanford in the Fall. She did all of those extra-curricular activites without a cell phone. I guarantee you, if my aunt had been a bad parent and had allowed her to have a cell phone, and twitter and myspace and all that other bull, there is no way she would be at Stanford right now.
It's all in the parenting.

Internet Censorship (SOPA) - Round two! Let's act quick!

Hey guys, we did a great job the first time around (thanks ckoadyin!!!) But sources say this could be voted on as early as next week! http://americancensorship.org/ for more info and to sign the petition again! I believe if you provide information to where you live when signing that it will automatically send email to your local congressmen, but on top of that we want as many emails and calls as possible. Worst case scenario for a filibuster to be initiated. We have a little more time this time around, so sign, call, spread the word to every social network possible, and to every forum here on xda. I can't tell you how important this is, specially considering this is being advertised as an anti piracy measure (which is total crap!), it gives law makers and large corporations tons of power to censor the internet!
Thanks for reading guys, act fast, power to the people!
I'm surprised there hasn't been any reply to this, this is so scary. I don't want my freedom to obtain or distribute information taken away

Dude, the 3 major internet giants (Google, yahoo, Bing) are all AGAINST the bill, trust me, after a couple of friends and ke kinda compared the conditions of this bill to the bill of rights in the constitution alone, it would spit all over it! By shutting down Google, you shut down blogger (freedom of speech, press, religion, peaceful assembly cut) Google ads (pretty much all rights since Google Taylor's ads to what type of site u use), and by doing that, you will probably shutdown the android project, because all major funding for Google and its servers are gone! (Freedom of expression infringed) and various other things! This bill wouldn't stand a chance!!!!!!

Although the bill won't pass, here's a more accurate depiction:
1 - They shut down thepiratebay and other torrent sites
2 - Reddit, 4chan, etc. get extremely angry
3 - they shut down 4chan
4 - users of 4chan hack government websites, start riots, god knows what they are capable of...
But the SOPA bill is probably there to make the Protect-IP thing sound reasonable even though it is still crazy.

I'm strangely aroused.
While there is opposition from large companies there is also major support from large companies too. There are over 30 senators just sponsoring the damn thing, and many more supporting it. So you will have to excuse my pessimism, I believe it has a very good chance of passing despite huge opposition from the masses. The companies that are supporting the bill are dumping a lot of money into the pockets of the very senators voting to pass it, therefore it really doesn't matter that it is unpopular.
We have to send the message that if you vote in support you will be trading your political career for it. The only way we do that is by sending emails and calling BEFORE the vote.
So please sign the petition again! If possible call your state representatives too, but at very least sign the petition!!

Thanks for your reply. I have to agree, and it is a potentially scary thought. It is written, and so is the protect IP bill, under the guise that it combats piracy. Except it gives so much power to large companies and the government that it would not be impossible to censor unrelated material! I think Americans like their freedom to obtain information via internet like they like their second amendment rights, which is deal with the consequences of not having that right controlled, rather than lose the freedom altogether. I think it is the responsibility of individual companies to protect their intellectual property themselves, not rely on the government to do it, and in the mean time censor information we have access to.
Am I right?

With large corporations like general electric not paying taxes and receiving a 3.2 billion dollar tax credit while the lower and middle class get raped with taxes, over regulation on the wrong things, this ciq privacy SNAFU, laws being enacted taking away even our most basic rights....
I mean you can't even throw a stone in any direction and not hit a topic in the news where we actually have real freedom, aren't getting stolen from and cheated by large business and government, ad infinitum! Bah!

NP it's a shame that more people arn't interested in this. If the bill passes as is EVERYTHING will change on the internet for those of us here in the states, even here on XDA. For example one member here posts a illegal link and the mods miss it. BAM no more XDA for us here for days. Which hurts there revenue which is based on hits so less money plus legal fees. This is gonna hurt bad. And for those that say proxy. I'm talking about our economy and our freedom. This'll hurt businesses and ISP's which means things will change for US the end users dramatically.

Ah Mr Scott the voice of the people passing it. He's so in touch with this and us. [end sarcasm]. Wonder how much stuff he's getting from the MPAA for this one...
Mr Scott " We don't need to hear experts in this field to pass it " Oh god yeah we don't need informed decesions at all in Congress....
Looks like there will be 2 (non military) nets. The no cost one which won't be free but censored, and a paid one where all users will have to agree to open terms similar to our current one. More stratifying of society as we have known it. Cypher and methods to hide info will be abundant. Stuff will make the ja panese int ern et police look like boy scouts.
Proxies are currently not blind so who cares about them. They threw the guy in jail who ran the only true blind proxy anyway. Some MIT guy that built a system that the NSA couldn't trace packets through.
I think if this bill passes I'm just going to go back to snail mail and reading books. I'll sell the Evo 3D and buy some dumb phone that only makes phone calls.
This mixed with the bill that will allow the government to arrest and detain any American for as long as they like and even torture them and you have one seriously dangerous combination.
http://rt.com/usa/news/obama-detention-veto-defense-853/
I hate this bill, and what sucks is that we will still be censored if this doesn't pass. In fact, most likely the bill won't pass. However, some derp is going to propose something like Protect-IP which is less crazy (but still bat**** crazy) and that bill will be passed. And since the people that want it passed know ****ing nothing about the internet, it's even more of a slap in the face.
They should really just take the law, and keep it away from the internet.
I might be the only one out there but I really never thought that SOPA was that bad.
Stopping a domain from resolving to an IP is like sweeping dirt under a carpet.

So much larger than that. It gives the government and large companies the ability to decide what we can read, not just download, and pirate. Then the ability to arrest someone for using their first amendment right, under the guise it somehow obscurely fits under SOPA. The first amendment being trampled upon is a slippery slope.
So someone posts something on twitter that violates intellectual property rights, and the whole site is unresolvable. Same with you tube, Facebook, and xda. Its like using a nuclear bomb to kill a fly in your kitchen.
Go read SOPA more, if you still feel the same way then god help us all.
God I hope this doesn't pass or the protect ip bill...

Reply that I received from my rep Roy Blunt:
Dear xxx,
Thank you for contacting me regarding S. 968, the Protect IP Act.
Intellectual property industries employ more than 19 million people, making it an integral part of our economy. Rogue websites dedicated to the sale and distribution of counterfeit goods and pirated content are a direct threat to these jobs and to entrepreneurs growing and building legitimate businesses online.
Businesses have lost $135 billion in revenue annually as a result of these rogue sites. Customers have also beenharmed by these sites; for example, online pharmacies that don't adhere to U.S. regulations have been reported to cause a rapid increase in prescription drug abuse.
Ia m a cosponsor of the Protect IP Act which would cut off foreign websites dedicated to counterfeiting and piracy that steal American jobs, hurt the economy, and harm customers. It would allow the JusticeDepartment to file a civil action against those who have registered or own a domain name linked to an infringing website. The bill does not allow the Justice Department to target domain names registeredby a U.S. entity.
Innovation is a cornerstone of our nation's economic growth. Proper intellectual property protections and incentivesensure that inventors develop products that benefit consumers. Without such incentives for innovators,we risk falling behind places like China and India.
Again, thank you for contacting me. I look forward to continuing our conversation on Facebook www.facebook.com/SenatorBlunt and Twitter www.twitter.com/RoyBlunt about the important issues facing Missouri and the country. We don't have a right to steal the IP of others. While I do not want more government in my life, the problem of piracy is very real and one that is getting worse with each generation. The ease with which we can do it has caused whole generations of kids to grow up with no respect for the property of others. All they understand is that if they can download it, they can do with it as they please. They have almost no concept of what IP and copyright are. Something has to be done not just to protect companies from unscrupulous Americans with entitlement attitudes, but from countries like China that are stealing billions from us with no controls whatsoever. Piracy costs us all in some way.

THIS^^^ Just because they did some proper services such as file hosting, they should not be allowed to pirate. One thing has nothing to do with the other. Sharing free information is one thing selling stolen info is quite the other
I dont think there will ever be a way to stop piracy. Sure they may make it harder but dont think it will ever stop. Just my 2 cents.
There is a difference between stopping piracy and giving our government the ability to police the internet in this fashion. If you give them an inch they're gonna take a mile. This is not communist China, it's the FREE USA. Do not give our government this power.
I have no quims about shutting it down if they are guilty. My thing is if they can do this without sopa, and they can, what is the need for sopa? It's just for the government to have more power as they see fit. F*ing lobbyist! More reason to fight sopa.

Have you guys ever noticed that all the devs on the i9100 section here use MegaUpload? That **** used to piss me off. Why use such a crappy service when you can easily host it on Dropbox for free and much more easily.

Very true!
MegaUpload, like other filesharing websites, had no control over what users upload. They also complied with DMCA takedown notices.
So, the actual story behind the Megaupload thing had to do with the Megaupload song they posted, sang by people like Will.I.Am, Kanye West, and some others. What ended up happening was the record company that owned some of these singers, Universal Music Group or w/e, was pissed off and demanded the song be removed off Youtube and it was just going back and forth for a while. In the end, they really took action against Megaupload and now that's why they're currently down. The real war isn't between the artists and people downloading music, it's between the record companies who are apparently being retarded and abusing their power or w/e.

if people stopped putting out bad movies, music, and games then I wouldn't pirate so much. who protects my money when I don't like what I paid for? I buy records of music I like and have over 600. I keep a long list of movies I like for a future shelf filled with 100s of them. I'm in school and making 12k per year. I pirate everything. we don't have imax, arthouse theaters, or good music here. I have to drive 6 hours out then back for a good time. if some rich person can't afford to keep their planes, boats, second and onward homes, and lot of cars - I will not lose sleep. we don't need anti piracy. we need quality control and bigger paychecks.

Text/spy app

I'm looking for an app I can install on my two teenage daughters phone that will enable me to view their text messages from my phone. And the app would need to be hidden so that they wouldn't be able to see it.
Googling didn't really help aside from links to expensive spying software that's a bit more than I need.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
You can use an app that backs up the text messages to a gmail account like SMS Backup+. However if they delete the message before it gets backed up, you won't see it.
You can also have them use the AT&T Messages app. It allows you to look at messages through your PC.
There's an app/service called MobileSpy that records all that stuff to a server that you can log in & view anytime. I used it back when I had a couple people working for me with Blackberrys, but I think it works for Android & other OS's. I can't remember how much it cost but it wasn't cheap.. maybe $30 every quarter or something like that for each device. It recorded sms, calls, some email, gps, etc.. & it worked really well for me..

Kinda creepy. They are teenage girls let them be. You should know.what kind of daughters your raising. You shouldnt need that. If your worried so much take thier phones or block messaging all together... Im just saying not trying to talk mess. And yea i have kids too.

Its a thin line to spy on your daughters, I have two girls three boys, and the girls were the worst.
Seems better to let them get in trouble, and show them the faults. They will hate you for spying o them for a long time.
Yea dude, you can't unread things......
Sometimes it's just better not to know.

Thanks for the app suggestions so far.
As to the parenting disagreement decisions. Well I told my kids from the get go that if they wanted Facebook accts and cell phones with texting I would be checking their texts and their Facebook pages and private messages.
I meet their friends, I meet the parents of their friends if they want to spend the night...in other words, I want to know what's going on in their lives.
I'm not their friend; I'm their parent. I'm more than okay with them thinking I'm over protective. Despite how that sounds, I'm not some overly strict jerk disciplinarian parent.
Anyway, I'd prefer that this thread didn't get into a discussion of parenting opinions. If you don't agree with me, that's cool.

Be careful with this route. I'm not a parent at all. I know someone with parents that have done the same as you. Spying on Facebook and texts. Let's just say that this led to him rebellion and sneaking around the parents back. Doing drugs, going out to the wrong places, and secret Facebook accounts.

I had a girlfriend who was treated that way. She went nuts when she got a little freedom because she was always so sheltered and monitored. The kind of stuff that makes one a star on GGW. With all due respect. No offense meant.
I appreciate the replies and concerns. But a parent doesn't cause a kid to go crazy and rebel and start doing drugs. People choose how they act/react to situations.
I'be always been upfront with my daughters that I will check their texts and Facebook. There's nothing wrong with being monitored.
And they're far from sheltered. They listen to the music they want, wear the clothes they want (within reason), have phones and laptops, go to concerts, comic conventions, play sports, we talk openly about drugs and sex.

Seems like your guys just want to attack, him, believe me if he daughter are already in there TEENS. He is doing somthin g right to get em this far.

Oh good grief. I'm not sure what the point of your response is or even why you responded. They can't wear mini skirts, can only have ear and nose piercings, can't be alone with a boy unsupervised in a house, and must keep their grades at C's or better if they want dyed hair (my oldest currently has purple with red streaks), and usually are required to be in at 6pm so that we all sit down as a family to eat supper. I can see why they should hate me.
With me getting them to a combination of pom, drivers ed, soccer, private guitar lessons, and the oldests metal band practice we get plenty of time for talks, and they are not afraid to come to me because I'm not quick to anger and I stay non judgemental. I can count on one hand the number of times I've spanked both of them and I haven't even raised my voice to either of them in years.
They most certainly didn't hate me when I surprised them by taking them to Snoop Dogg a few weeks back.
Oh. And just so you know, I have a bachelors in education and a graduate degree in psychology.

Can we end phone theft please?

As a person who has had two phones stolen I can tell you one thing - there needs to be a password on the use of flashing. First I had a galaxy note, which has Samsung locate. But hardware reset saw to that. Second I had a CSL Spice, knowing about hardware reset, I set about finding an un resettable program. In comes avast (brilliant though it is).
Two criticisms, first is its method of retrieval. Sms. Yes, sms. The thief has thrown your sim card in a bush, but in order to remotely access your phone, avast smses your sim card. Classic. Try it, steal your own phone, or get a mate to, it's so tragic its funny. Go on, back up your apps, take out your sd card, and be your own thief. Second issue, obviously is flashing. Avast hides on the partition, but this is wiped and remade based upon your new OS. Bye bye avast.
So really there are two key solutions: password protection on the flashing access. Set by the user, changeable only by those the user gives it to (engineers/new owners). And the other is set a hardware code like IMEI on accessing not just a phone network, but also Google Play registration, and Samsung /other apps registration. That way the code can be flagged by the owner. Actually thirdly is an email address which appears upon failed flashing password attempts. To remind the thief that he can still take the brick of plastic and metal (and gps) back.
I'd like all new owners to be informed of what to do upon loosing their phone, codes to note down etc. As I feel this is not done enough. I'd love to start a push to get Samsung and other droid phones as well as Google Play to start this and maybe we can finally end phone theft.
Anyone think a petition is possible?
How were your phones stolen? I have never had one of the 40+ phones i or my immediate family have owned (knock on wood here as i probably just jinxed myself) stolen.
In my case it could be just locale, but i have worked in some pretty rough areas with high crime rates so i could just be lucky or plain diligent with what i do with my phone when not in use.
Not being disrespectful here, just seeking enlightenment on what behaviours/actions leads to them being stolen to see how it is different to my experience.
As to your proposal, not a bad idea. One thing i can think of is that like the locked bootloaders that were/are put on some phones, somebody will most likely find an exploit/hack to get around it. They almost always do. Could be talking out my arse on that as i am not knowledgeable with this but they always seem to find a way.

depends how tech savy the thief is.. if they perform an Odin flash then only thing preventing use of the phone on ATT is IMEI blacklisting. Couple of things come to mind that might help. If they pick up the phone and try to use it as-is without switching SIMS or factory reset Plan-B can help. If either of these is done then only thing that will help would be something such as a preconfigured Plan-B app in the CWM image to "phone home" after SIM change and factory reset.
Security would lay back and laugh at your problem.
Just being aware of your environment and using sensible precautions will go a long way towards preventing theft. Treat your phone like it's worth hundreds of dollars and you should be OK. For example, If you were at a social gathering where there were many people you didn't know would you leave six one hundred dollar bills sitting on a table in a secluded area while you went to the bathroom? Probably not, yet I commonly see people doing just that with their $600 phones at parties or while at the park with friends. They rely on strangers honesty and their friends vigilance to protect their property. The trouble is, cell phones have become so common place the friends would be as likely wonder why someone is picking up their beer as to why they are picking up your phone. Honest folks expect others to be just as honest as they are and why not? They are normal after all and aren't all normal people honest just like them? So, if someone sees another picking up a random ubiquitous phone and putting it to their ear while they walk out the door they will surely not think twice about it. The phone is obviously that person's, else why would they pick it up? Thief's who steal in public rely on people not noticing "normal" behavior. Just treat your phone like it's a hundred dollar bill and you should suffer no more losses due to theft, unless you are mugged of course.
Just get Cerberus. Problem solved.

I wish i could stay at home a lot. Not the case. Do lot of traveling and in a lot of different locales/ environments. Just don't put my property where there is an opportunity for some one else to make it theirs. That is why i asked what the circumstances were behind theirs being stolen. If it was stolen due to lack of diligence on their pArt or were they physically assaulted.
Sorry about your losses and i am sure it is not a pleasant experience. I know i would not be happy.
I personally think the idea is sound.

what he said...
and, be more aware of where your phone is at ALL TIMES...
one time is understandable; two times is carelessness..
I love how western these answers are. Lol, left it in a cafe. My galaxy note was ripped out of my hands my a thief on a motorcycle in Malaysia while I was checking gps map, and my CSL Spice was pushed out of my pocket as I was being dry humped on a moped in Bali. That last one is classed as an accidental loss, which turned into a theft as the lucky buggers driving behind me probably found it. How is besides the point really. "you were stabbed? Oh, we're you in stab proof armour? Carrying a gun? Oh, silly girl!"
Cerberus is bandied around like avast anti theft, if it's flash proof, then I'll bite (as it were), but I'd like to see that claim.
Chiefly what we could do with is a hardware code that content providers request on account activation. Something a phone can't change. It needs a built in theft message/action not one remotely sent. And it needs a flash password.
Actually a readable hardware code would suffice if all content providers signed up.
Who would you speak to to suggest such a thing?
Already in chats with Samsung and Google Play customer services, but they aren't really the development team sadly.
In my city there are at least 4,000 phones for sale on Craigslist daily. Can you imagine how many customer service people at&t would need to manage the IEMI switching? It would be like the frakkin DMV for transfer of ownership. And managing blacklisted IEMI? Fuggetaboutit. I asked one about that idea and their response was "stolen phones are new customers".
the only way to prevent stuff from being stolen, is not to own it in the first place...IMHO
That being said, we all take the risk together when we pull out these fancy devices for the world to see. and lets face it, we all like to flaunt our wares as a status symbol on occasion.
the note is a big fancy eye catcher, and a prime target for crooks to swipe from unsuspecting folks not paying attention. ( sorry about the dry humping moped issue).
And since the odds are, your device will get stolen again, you should change your habits of usage if possible.
I agree that security of the device after theft is difficult, and I would support a petition to enhance the security measures, but I'm not gonna hold my breath on any carrier taking the task on. Like ranger said, a stolen phone is a new customer.....g
It wouldn't require any work, nor switching, just adding a field for IMEI. This is automatic for carriers right, but it needs to be the same for Google play and other app sites.
When a user looses his phone, he logs the IMEI as stolen, and the Google Team put that code on a watch list. Any Form designer could handle that. IMEI or serial number or whatever is hardware based.
Simple idea no?
Thats why I bought this app called gotya.

Yeah, there's no criminals in "nice" neighborhoods.
I use Tasker for:
When I switch locations, a front/back pic + GPS, sent to google drive.
When not at a location that has is known, it sends the same info every time the screen comes on.
Tasker locks certain apps in unknown locations, so the main screen stays unlocked. I figure the longer they can play with the phone on the more likely I am to get it back.
Sms of course to trigger by minute pics and GPS.
