Hey guys, we did a great job the first time around (thanks ckoadyin!!!) But sources say this could be voted on as early as next week! http://americancensorship.org/ for more info and to sign the petition again! I believe if you provide information to where you live when signing that it will automatically send email to your local congressmen, but on top of that we want as many emails and calls as possible. Worst case scenario for a filibuster to be initiated. We have a little more time this time around, so sign, call, spread the word to every social network possible, and to every forum here on xda. I can't tell you how important this is, specially considering this is being advertised as an anti piracy measure (which is total crap!), it gives law makers and large corporations tons of power to censor the internet!
Thanks for reading guys, act fast, power to the people!
I'm surprised there hasn't been any reply to this, this is so scary. I don't want my freedom to obtain or distribute information taken away

Dude, the 3 major internet giants (Google, yahoo, Bing) are all AGAINST the bill, trust me, after a couple of friends and ke kinda compared the conditions of this bill to the bill of rights in the constitution alone, it would spit all over it! By shutting down Google, you shut down blogger (freedom of speech, press, religion, peaceful assembly cut) Google ads (pretty much all rights since Google Taylor's ads to what type of site u use), and by doing that, you will probably shutdown the android project, because all major funding for Google and its servers are gone! (Freedom of expression infringed) and various other things! This bill wouldn't stand a chance!!!!!!

Although the bill won't pass, here's a more accurate depiction:
1 - They shut down thepiratebay and other torrent sites
2 - Reddit, 4chan, etc. get extremely angry
3 - they shut down 4chan
4 - users of 4chan hack government websites, start riots, god knows what they are capable of...
But the SOPA bill is probably there to make the Protect-IP thing sound reasonable even though it is still crazy.

I'm strangely aroused.
While there is opposition from large companies there is also major support from large companies too. There are over 30 senators just sponsoring the damn thing, and many more supporting it. So you will have to excuse my pessimism, I believe it has a very good chance of passing despite huge opposition from the masses. The companies that are supporting the bill are dumping a lot of money into the pockets of the very senators voting to pass it, therefore it really doesn't matter that it is unpopular.
We have to send the message that if you vote in support you will be trading your political career for it. The only way we do that is by sending emails and calling BEFORE the vote.
So please sign the petition again! If possible call your state representatives too, but at very least sign the petition!!

Thanks for your reply. I have to agree, and it is a potentially scary thought. It is written, and so is the protect IP bill, under the guise that it combats piracy. Except it gives so much power to large companies and the government that it would not be impossible to censor unrelated material! I think Americans like their freedom to obtain information via internet like they like their second amendment rights, which is deal with the consequences of not having that right controlled, rather than lose the freedom altogether. I think it is the responsibility of individual companies to protect their intellectual property themselves, not rely on the government to do it, and in the mean time censor information we have access to.
Am I right?

It is absolutely crazy right now. In reality it has been this way for the last 150 years, but the media is focusing so much on the same topic right now it appears as if this crap has just started. With large corporations like general electric not paying taxes and receiving a 3.2 billion dollar tax credit while the lower and middle class get raped with taxes, over regulation on the wrong things, this ciq privacy SNAFU, laws being enacted taking away even our most basic rights....
I mean you can't even throw a stone in any direction and not hit a topic in the news where we actually have real freedom, aren't getting stolen from and cheated by large business and government, ad infinitum! Bah!

Today, Congress holds hearings on the first American Internet censorship system.
This bill can pass. If it does the Internet and free speech will never be the same.
Join all of us to stop this bill.
Dude, change your title, this is not at all irrelevant or off topic. Every member of xda that enjoys the freedom to obtain information, exchange information, and use information freely needs to know about the things our governments, plural, are trying to censor. Yes you can find information on the internet on how to build a bomb, but that same information can be used for little Johnny and his science project. The internet is what it is today because the networks that makeup the internet self manage and police themselves.
I have obtained education from my university to know how to synthesize drugs, build bombs, etc. that information also has the power to help or save lives. Should my education be censored too, because I know how to efficiently kill people???

When did these petitions ever work? I can appreciate the effort, but you all realize it's not going to do jack ****. The site simply said "Thanks for sending the letter to your representative". Did it really send that? Where did it send it to?
I think most effective way would be to directly contact your representative's offices and express your concerns, instead of generating an automated email with identical text.
I just hope that we have enough people in congress with more than one functional brain cell to see that this bill is a pure nightmare and wreak all kinds of havoc. And I am sure it will be veto'd by Obama. But still, letting your representative know about it directly (without computer-generated letter) should be something that everyone does.
You can start here to get contact information: https://writerep.house.gov/writerep/welcome.shtml
Directly contacted one of the reps in my area (Denver, Mike Coffman for anyone who questions me) as well as signed the petition.

NP it's a shame that more people arn't interested in this. If the bill passes as is EVERYTHING will change on the internet for those of us here in the states, even here on XDA. For example one member here posts a illegal link and the mods miss it. BAM no more XDA for us here for days. Which hurts there revenue which is based on hits so less money plus legal fees. This is gonna hurt bad. And for those that say proxy. I'm talking about our economy and our freedom. This'll hurt businesses and ISP's which means things will change for US the end users dramatically.

Very true it could be.
Ah Mr Scott the voice of the people passing it. He's so in touch with this and us. [end sarcasm]. Wonder how much stuff he's getting from the MPAA for this one...
Mr Scott " We don't need to hear experts in this field to pass it " Oh god yeah we don't need informed decesions at all in Congress....
Looks like there will be 2 (non military) nets. The no cost one which won't be free but censored, and a paid one where all users will have to agree to open terms similar to our current one. More stratifying of society as we have known it. Cypher and methods to hide info will be abundant. Stuff will make the ja panese int ern et police look like boy scouts.
Proxies are currently not blind so who cares about them. They threw the guy in jail who ran the only true blind proxy anyway. Some MIT guy that built a system that the NSA couldn't trace packets through.
I think if this bill passes I'm just going to go back to snail mail and reading books. I'll sell the Evo 3D and buy some dumb phone that only makes phone calls.
This mixed with the bill that will allow the government to arrest and detain any American for as long as they like and even torture them and you have one seriously dangerous combination.
http://rt.com/usa/news/obama-detention-veto-defense-853/
I hate this bill, and what sucks is that we will still be censored if this doesn't pass. In fact, most likely the bill won't pass. However, some derp is going to propose something like Protect-IP which is less crazy (but still bat**** crazy) and that bill will be passed. And since the people that want it passed know ****ing nothing about the internet, it's even more of a slap in the face.
They should really just take the law, and keep it away from the internet.
I might be the only one out there but I really never thought that SOPA was that bad.
Stopping a domain from resolving to an IP is like sweeping dirt under a carpet.

So much larger than that. It gives the government and large companies the ability to decide what we can read, not just download, and pirate. Then the ability to arrest someone for using their first amendment right, under the guise it somehow obscurely fits under SOPA. The first amendment being trampled upon is a slippery slope.
So someone posts something on twitter that violates intellectual property rights, and the whole site is unresolvable. Same with you tube, Facebook, and xda. Its like using a nuclear bomb to kill a fly in your kitchen.
Go read SOPA more, if you still feel the same way then god help us all.
God I hope this doesn't pass or the protect ip bill...

Reply that I received from my rep Roy Blunt:
Dear xxx,
Thank you for contacting me regarding S. 968, the Protect IP Act.
Intellectual property industries employ more than 19 million people, making it an integral part of our economy. Rogue websites dedicated to the sale and distribution of counterfeit goods and pirated content are a direct threat to these jobs and to entrepreneurs growing and building legitimate businesses online.
Businesses have lost $135 billion in revenue annually as a result of these rogue sites. Customers have also beenharmed by these sites; for example, online pharmacies that don't adhere to U.S. regulations have been reported to cause a rapid increase in prescription drug abuse.
Ia m a cosponsor of the Protect IP Act which would cut off foreign websites dedicated to counterfeiting and piracy that steal American jobs, hurt the economy, and harm customers. It would allow the JusticeDepartment to file a civil action against those who have registered or own a domain name linked to an infringing website. The bill does not allow the Justice Department to target domain names registeredby a U.S. entity.
Innovation is a cornerstone of our nation's economic growth. Proper intellectual property protections and incentivesensure that inventors develop products that benefit consumers. Without such incentives for innovators,we risk falling behind places like China and India.
Again, thank you for contacting me. I look forward to continuing our conversation on Facebook www.facebook.com/SenatorBlunt and Twitter www.twitter.com/RoyBlunt about the important issues facing Missouri and the country. UPDATE: SOPA HAS BEEN POSTPONED TILL' 2012 (Read here)
__________________________________
After a bit of research on a bill that could possibly be passed dubbed "SOPA" I wanted to share what I've learned/found, and then get the opinion on the matter from the Vibrant community...
INFO ON SOPA:
You maybe haven't heard of SOPA, it's not like the news is covering it, or in general very much discussed about considering how big of an effect it can have on the world. Well, if you haven't already heard about SOPA then you're going to be in for a very big surprise today. SOPA stands for the Stop Online Piracy Act- Now wait. Stopping piracy? That actually doesn't sound to bad. Pirating a movie for example is stealing, so this bill would be a good thing? No. No. It wouldn't.
SOPA (if passed) would allow for the government to block any website that contains copyrighted material. What do I mean by that? Say some little Bieber fan girl on YouTube posts a download link to a new song of his. Well, that's actually not legal, so YouTube is now in jeopardy of being shutdown. I'm not even being over dramatic, this is a fact. Sites like Facebook, Twitter, even XDA would have to censor their millions users or risk getting shutdown. Although any website, foreign or domestic, big or a small start up, can get shutdown I just want to emphasize that all those very popular sites (Twitter, YouTube, Facebook, XDA) are by no means outside of the bills laws.
That's not the end of it though, there is more! SOPA can also ban generic drugs! Maybe to most of us that just means coughing up a buck or two more for real Tylenol instead of buying the cheaper (yet just as effective) Target brand one. Maybe so. But what about people who can't afford that buck or two more? That means people in need who can't afford name brand medicine are completely out of luck...
This bill also goes by the name H.R.3261 and the Protect IP Act.
EDUCATE YOURSELF ON SOPA!Now that I've given you a taste of what SOPA is about, I suggest you go and educate yourself on SOPA. Understand it, maybe even read the full text (link in "Useful Links" section). Then, if you can, spend twenty minutes and watch this video on YouTube about SOPA. It's very informal...

Feel free to reply with your opinion on the matter and/or participate in the poll at the top of the post.
this thread is so bias its just too ridiculous to take seriously. you're title itself pushes public opinion towards the censorship route (so I see you edite the title now -_-). Also in the sources you posted it specifically says that sites like youtube will not be held liable if they act promptly to take away the copyrighted material. do I think it's all BS? hells ye, but it doesn't mean they're not wrong. piracy is stealing period, regardless of your philosophical views that music and games should be free. if somebody wants to charge for their product you don't have to buy it, but you shouldn't be stealing it either.
I think the videogame, music and movie industry need a new format to publish their media and need to be more open and fair in terms of pricing because thats whats allowed these peer to peer sharing sites to soar in popularity. people are just fed up with the bull**** prices of subpar products, ie CODMW3 and the fact that it cost 60 bucks while offering nothing new = complete ripoff, while you can get BF3 for less = heaven.

The mw3 thing is frustrating me >.< mw3 is a great game: a full new campaign, new spec ops missions, a survival mode, 16 new maps and a refresh in terms of weapons etc, as well as countless improvements and fixs... im more tthan happy with my purchase, 60$ was fine...
As for piracy, i agree, high prices isnt an excuse for stealing but assuming that you own rights to text or music has always seems incredibly dumb to me... i write something and suddenly no one can ever write that again without consulting me??? **** no... i say that if you want to sell books or recordings, thats one thing but once it becomes illegal for someone to publicly perform a song because "i thought of it first", theres something really wrong here...
Then theres 1$ for a 4 minute loop of 4 chords and a juvenile melody line and a sung poem about love, loss or "the skeletons in my closet", "this life i regret", "the fingernails in my eyes"...
So what if i claimed rrights to love as aa topic for music.. can i sue all the music that talks about it???
To conclude my rant... if you cant protect it, its not yours; dont try to sell it and then abuse an incredibly idiotic system of law to strong-arm anyone who gets in your way.
Sent from a cell tower to the XDA server to you.
@dardani89
Yes, I changed the title because you were right. It was biased. You do make a good point.
However, YouTube censoring the material is pretty bad in itself. For example if someone makes a video with copyrighted music playing (even in the background) then either one of a few things would happen...
1. The video would be removed
2. The audio would be removed
3. The user will get banned
But if YouTube doesn't take action then it's at risk of being shutdown.
Also, it's not that part of the bill that truly bothers me. It's the part about generic drugs. Because in my opinion, that where it crosses the line.

sopa and protect ip are retarded. it's just a bunch of inept politicians making ineffective policy about something they don't understand.
Hell, you didn't even cover the fact that if passed, it could alter the foundation of how the internet works for americans. other countries are threatening to actually cut us off if these bills pass into law(they are actually two separate proposals, looks like big business isnt taking any chances).

Generic drugs are one of the facets of the medical system that keeps medicare prices from getting higher than they would be. Imagine the government paying brand name prices for millions of seniors on blood pressure/heart/cholesterol medication, it would be so absurd that it would automatically bankrupt the government with an insane automatic increase of healthcare spending. remember that entitlement programs rise in cost due to self regulating formulas, not through legislators. So with that text in the bill and the budgetary mindset right now, I doubt any serious legislator would support a ban in generic drugs. Let alone the popular opinion that would rip it apart in a matter of days.
As Nilay Patel said on TWIT: It's a terrible solution to a real problem.
Down with SOPA

If only Facebook and Google would as well.. (well, google is in bed w/ these bastards but wishful thinking eh?)
Facebook and twitter going black would get some attention right ? heh...
Im in. there are a few other places I am a part of that are going dark on the 18th as well.
I find this whole blackout thing to be completely ridiculous.
I'm no fan of SOPA and I ditched GoDaddy on the few domains I own, but I find blackouts like this to be counterproductive.
I'm not fond at all of companies/websites intentionally and purposefully sabotaging their uptime and access. It serves to piss off their visitors like me. Most XDA visitors (and redditors etc.) already know about SOPA. A blackout serves no purpose.

I feel quite the contrary. I believe it garners attention and action. It helps motivate the un-motivated to get their butts moving to sign the petitions and increase awareness. Grassroots momentum builds quickly.
Just sayin'
Internet pseudo-petitions do nothing. It's akin to 'liking' "I hate cancer!" on Facebook.
fyi.. here is an article that everyone can read.. click on the 2 links that go to google and facebook .. copy/paste the text.
If more ppl contact those 2 sites.. maybe they will listen/respond.
This isn't a petition per se, the point is to get people to personally call in and lodge formal complaints with the specific senators/representatives of your state and get your voices heard.
I believe that would be much more efficient than simply typing your name in a petition.

Just thought people should know!
I find it very entertaining it occurred the day after the SOPA blackout protests. Anonymous seems to have taken a jump on it too and taken down the DOJ's site and some major record sites as well.

I'm glad it was shut down. Everyone uses that garbage site to host files and the download speeds were horrid not to mention the waiting times and ads.

Seeing this in the news really set me off.
There are plenty of worse hosts out there.

WOW. That is BS... I cannot believe it. What site is next? This is PURE CRAP. And I did not prefer this site but sometimes it worked to get what I needed. F The Government. I thought in H.S. over 20 years ago we would of had a civil war due to the goverment. I thought after all this time we had passed that point. But HOW the goverment and the obama admin is taking away our rights and what we are used to I can see it happening at some point as this crap continues....
Just saying, MegaVideo is down, too.

We don't have a right to steal the IP of others. While I do not want more government in my life, the problem of piracy is very real and one that is getting worse with each generation. The ease with which we can do it has caused whole generations of kids to grow up with no respect for the property of others. All they understand is that if they can download it, they can do with it as they please. They have almost no concept of what IP and copyright are. Something has to be done not just to protect companies from unscrupulous Americans with entitlement attitudes, but from countries like China that are stealing billions from us with no controls whatsoever. Piracy costs us all in some way.

THIS^^^ Just because they did some proper services such as file hosting, they should not be allowed to pirate. One thing has nothing to do with the other. Sharing free information is one thing selling stolen info is quite the other
I dont think there will ever be a way to stop piracy. Sure they may make it harder but dont think it will ever stop. Just my 2 cents.
There is a difference between stopping piracy and giving our government the ability to police the internet in this fashion. If you give them an inch they're gonna take a mile. This is not communist China, it's the FREE USA. Do not give our government this power.
I have no quims about shutting it down if they are guilty. My thing is if they can do this without sopa, and they can, what is the need for sopa? It's just for the government to have more power as they see fit. F*ing lobbyist! More reason to fight sopa.

Have you guys ever noticed that all the devs on the i9100 section here use MegaUpload? That **** used to piss me off. Why use such a crappy service when you can easily host it on Dropbox for free and much more easily.

Very true!
MegaUpload, like other filesharing websites, had no control over what users upload. They also complied with DMCA takedown notices.
So, the actual story behind the Megaupload thing had to do with the Megaupload song they posted, sang by people like Will.I.Am, Kanye West, and some others. What ended up happening was the record company that owned some of these singers, Universal Music Group or w/e, was pissed off and demanded the song be removed off Youtube and it was just going back and forth for a while. In the end, they really took action against Megaupload and now that's why they're currently down. The real war isn't between the artists and people downloading music, it's between the record companies who are apparently being retarded and abusing their power or w/e.

if people stopped putting out bad movies, music, and games then I wouldn't pirate so much. who protects my money when I don't like what I paid for? I buy records of music I like and have over 600. I keep a long list of movies I like for a future shelf filled with 100s of them. I'm in school and making 12k per year. I pirate everything. we don't have imax, arthouse theaters, or good music here. I have to drive 6 hours out then back for a good time. if some rich person can't afford to keep their planes, boats, second and onward homes, and lot of cars - I will not lose sleep. we don't need anti piracy. we need quality control and bigger paychecks.
