phone bricked? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

ironically, and i stress.
IRONICALLY.
as soon as 2011 rolls around, i suddenly loose service?
and i figure it's a problem with the rom that conflicting with the radio, so i restore using Clockwork ROM Manager.
upon doing so, I first get a Yellow Exclamation point, so I restart my phone.
it goes through the process, and then it stays at the "Vibrant" screen for a good 20 minutes.
did I do something wrong? :/

Were you going from froyo to an eclair backup? Backup's don't restore the kernel, hence hanging.
Most would suggest to odin back to stock.

no, it was from Eugene's 2.3 clone to stock.
and I already backed up my stock rom, but I think I used the wrong method of restoring.
like, I went to ROM Manager, Restore Backup, and I had a big exclamation point.
I let it sit for 5 minutes, nothing happened so I restarted.
It restored and everything, and then it just bricked at the Vibrant screen.

to be more specific, i used this rom:
http://eb-productions.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=samsungsgs&action=display&thread=144
i backed up using both nandroid and rom manager.

i hope this can be restored.
because it's not a critical brick.
but just a soft one.
it won't boot into download mode with the power button/vol trick because I tried it before.
it just flashes on a black screen, and i usually use cmd to do it.
but because it's possibly hardware locked, i cannot do anything from cmd because it says "the device is not ready" even though it's plugged in to my computer.

please tell me someone can help me.

i think it's unfixable because of two reasons:
1. i am hardware locked, and i cannot boot it with the power key trick.
2. cmd can't find the device, even though it's recognized by my computer and odin.
primarily, my computer sees the drive i need to access, but i cannot connect to it because my phone won't get past the vibrant screen.
so, i think it might be full bricked and there isn't anything i can do to fix it.
but it's weird, because ODIN sees my phone, but there is no way to download the stuff i need from odin on my phone.

sorry to spam like this, but i really need the help.

I've had this problem in the past but I got my phone back in september/october so my vibrant isn't hardware locked
I would keep trying, last night I bricked my phone while flashing a rom and I was barely able to get it into download mode...
Try this combo:
1. Hold power + 2 volume buttons while plugged into computer
2. Keep holding until vibrant logo flashes 3 times
3. Right before the vibrant logo shows for the fourth time RELEASE VOLUME UP BUTTON
4. Odin back to stock
This always works for me, but liked I said, my phone is not hardware locked this may or may not work
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App

it's not going to work because my phone is hardware locked.
but i'll try. :/

Try pulling the battery and sim and try odin again...should be working if you see a com port in odin.

no it didn't work.
would i be able to call t-mobile and tell them that upon a soft reset, the phone stopped booting?

Are you sure it's a hardware locked? Even before you flashed a custom rom you can't access the recovery through the 3 buttons?

Edit: see following post

You went from eugene r2 to stock? Stock meaning 2.1 that came with your phone? It definitely sounds like a soft brick due to kernel mismatch...

Phone stuck on Phone-!-Computer screen.

So, I just got my phone back from Samsung for this issue. Start my newly returned phone up, it's running 2.2. I turn it off, hold volume buttons and plug in my USB cable - I get download mode instantly. I start up Odin 1.7, select the files and click start.
Nothing happens. Hangs up SetupConnection. I unplug the battery, then the USB cable, plug everything back in and I'm back at square one with this ****ing screen.
Last time I tried every single ****ing button combination posted on this website. I know my phone isn't hardware locked because I've never had a problem getting in to Download Mode before. Hell, I'd never had a problem with Odin not working properly before. What the hell is wrong? I have all the proper drivers installed. Why is this happening?
Now, Odin still sees my phone when I plug it in. If I click Start, sometimes it hangs on SetupConnection, sometimes it hangs on Initialization. I've read that you should still be able to flash while on this screen? Is this true? Either way, I think I'm ****ed again. Any help?
Also, I've read that maybe a jig will help get me in to download mode? Where can I buy a jig from?
you can go to stock jfd from that screen, it acts like download mode.
Once on jfd, download mode will work fine.
try the files in my going back to stock... also make sure to remove any other usb components (they can cause odin to hang).
I love you.
Something must be wrong with the files on my desktop, or perhaps the other USB cable I'm using is ****ed.
This is a bit embarrassing. For some reason I can't get root. I can get in to recovery and select reinstall packages, but every time it boots right back in to the OS. Any hints? Never had this issue before.
EDIT: So it looks like I have Superuser installed but since I can't get into Clockwork I can't flash any roms. What's going on? I can't find any other links where people couldn't get in to Clockwork.
EDIT2: Well, I installed ROM Manager and used it to "flash" CWM. Reinstall Packages worked this time it seems. Weird. Anyway, thanks for the help!
Cool, glad you were able to get it all sorted.

[Q] Odin is flashing several hours...

I've flashed my Galaxy S2 with Odin several times and it has worked fine until yesterday, when I tried to flash again, and everything just froze.
I followed the normal instructions for flashing and the phone just stopped at the "downloading" screen where it says, "Do not turn of target!!".
So it has been, for several hours now. The Odin window on my computer seems to be waiting... but for what? Will it ever time out?
Is it normal that a flash session can take several hours?
Is it safe to interrupt it?

Odin will flash, takes less than 5 minutes.
Is there any data running that you can see? I mean at the bottom left. I would suggest you turn off the phone, battery pull, wait for 5 minutes, and reflash back.
If it semi bricked, use JIG to revive it.
Either way, you can't be letting the phone there for the next few days etc right?
Did you click Start in Odin??
Although i don't have an s2(will be getting one soon) did you try to reset your pc? When i was flasing my sgsl i was stuck in this situation where odin seems to freeze everytime. I restarted my pc and poof, flashed without a problem
Edit: was flashing successful? If so maybe you should follow the instruction from the post below.

This might sound stupid but did you have 'auto-reboot' checked? It happened to me once even though I have flashed hundreds of times. Odin was still open after flashing a kernel and never reset.
Start was clicked - yes.
Re boot was checked - yes.
I reset my computer and restarted my phone and - now it's still frozen, but with an icon on the center showing three icons in a line. First is a phone, second is a exlamation mark and third is a computer. Yiipiiiee. It doesn't boot. I can't get into recovery mode. Download mode does work however, but still the same behaviour. It freezes if I try to flash it.
Now what? Where is that reset-button which resets the phone and clears its brain down to original mode? A simple "brain wash" would be nice.
Is there anyway out of this "freeze of death" ?
Flash CWM kernel, download CM7 rom, copy it on SDCard (mount USB storage in CWM, connect to PC via USB, copy ROM), flash ROM from CWM

Try to go into recovery mode and factory reset and clear cache and try flashing again (make sure you are on download mode)

Hold power button to off it (hold a lil longer for this).
Then Go into recovery mode (power, home button and volume up at same time). Try do wipe all data, cache and even dalvik. Reboot and see if that works.
Alternatively, at the same place, go into restore backup.
The man said: "I can't go into recovery mode"
...
Recovery mode doesn't work - nope. But thanks anyway. It's nice to see that people at least try to help. Big hugs to you all.
If I try to flash CWM, I come into the same freeze again. Mindbending stuff ala Samsung, huh. They clearly don't make idiot-safe products. I'm stuck. My next phone might be a StarTAC...
Has happened to me before. KIES was opened. I closed all KIES files and the flashing fun started again~
Good point, make sure Kies isn't running when using Odin!
Also, now that you've flashed CWM, can't you boot on it?
Kies is not running and whatever I flash - it freezes. The green progress bar in Odin reaches maybe 1 cm, but no blue progress bar is visible on the phone as usually happens when flashing. It just says, "Downloading... Don't turn off target!!"
Am I slowly heading towards the brutal-axe-method?
Sounds like the NAND is damaged to me, but I'm no expert...
"NAND" means? Why does it sound like it's damaged? How can it get repaired?
NAND is the flash chip (internal sdcard). Seems that its damaged because you're unable to fully flash it.
I don't think you can have that repaired (if the NAND is truly damaged, like I said I'm no expert), you'd have to get the phone replaced.
With all respect, let's hope you aren't an expert, but better. But has anyone else interrupted a flash process and went though a "freeze"?
I'm looking for a way to reset the phone to use only what was burnt into ROM from first delivery. I just can't accept that it is so easy to mess up a phone, and I doubt Samsung would be so crazy not to build it with a rescue kinda last savior. Am I totally naive? Is my baby dead? :'(
lol I hope for you that I'm wrong also!

Something similar had happened with me too. The phone was stuck b/w flashing with odin. And the startscreen was showing those 3 icons. It was soft bricked.
But I then finally fixed it by flashing CF and then a ROM

[Q] I think its gone :(

I flashed Trigger onto my Vibrant, all seemed well. ROM Manager was FCing, so I reinstalled from market, installed recovery from within ROM Manager, rebooted, went into the regular android recovery. Rebooted again, now it doesn't want to boot. Just loops at the Samsung Galaxy logo (after the vibrant, the little "movie" that plays after the Vibrant logo)
Stubborn bastard won't go into download mode, COM9 shows up in Odin, but it keeps looping the intro thing. If I try to flash, Odin just says SetupConnection and stays there.
Will a JIG do anything at this point?
I will admit, I got too eager and may have flashed a gingerbread ROM on top of a froyo bootloader. >.> I admit, that was stupid, but now all I want is to get the damn thing back into download mode...
It's not bricked. Probably just in a boot loop. Just need to play around and get into download mode.

that doesnt make a difference, i've been on simply honey like 2 month on froyo bootloaders and works fine apart from rainbow on boot and not being able to see recovery

That happened to me before, I used and tried a different cable and got into download mode with functioning odin. Also, try removing battery, then put the battery back in. then with pressing volume up and down with power switch plug in usb. Hope this helps. Vibrant is hard to brick.

It is not dead yet, follow the steps as follow thread to go back in beginning and flash rom you want again.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734475
Depending on which version of ODIN you are using the sequence works best like this:
1) Get the phone into a download acceptable mode with use of a usb cable (JIG is most appropriate)
2) Have ODIN running BEFORE connecting the phone
3) Now connect your phone and attempt the flash. Version prior to 1.7 were extremely picky with following this sequence. As of 1.7 POST ODIN seems to not bug so much the sequence of when the phone was plugged in.
Report back with your results...

1) take your battery out
2) plug your phone a laptop/desktop
3) hold volume up and volume down + put the battery in
...should be in download mode...I am assuming u have a froyo bootloader...
If that don't work then on step three instead of holding both volume buttons only hold volume up..that works for GB bootloader...

[Q] CinBell Vibrant 4g stuck on AT&T World Phone boot screen

Alright, I was having problems with my CyanogenMod, and I went to restart my phone because it kept force closing all my apps (including system processes) and it got stuck on the Vibrant screen and never started up.
I went to Nandroid to restore my backup I made before CM7, and it must be corrupted, because it refused to restore, so I said to hell with it and decided to start from scratch.
Long story short, I ended up flashing the wrong ROM by accident because I got confused between the Samsung Vibrant and the Samsung Galaxy S 4G, and somehow I got my phone stuck at an AT&T World Phone logo, and it won't do anything else. I've tried entering recovery AND download mode, and neither will work. Also, when I plug my phone into the USB port, the charging indicator gets stuck at the very beginning, showing a pinwheel and a greyed out battery.
I ordered a USB jig, hoping this would help send my phone into DL mode, but I'm still open to any ideas anyone has until then. I haven't had a phone for a couple days and its killing me!

Here's some tips:
1. NEVER restore non-cm7 nandroid backups on a cm7 based rom.
2. Flash stock JFD with repartitioning checked to go back to stock.
3. Reflash vibrant bootloaders. You may have some captivate bootloaders or a mismatched param.lfs that's causing the AT&T bootsplash. It could be one or the other and mismatching captivate and vibrant bootloaders or params could lead to a brick so just flash the vibrant bootloaders since it contains both bootloaders and param.lfs.
4. DL mode depends on the bootloaders you run.
Froyo bootloaders-------------
1. Volume up and down with USB inserted and with battery disconnected
2. Insert battery without letting go of buttons
Gingerbread bootloaders-------
1. hold power and volume up with the battery inserted and with the phone powered off
2. connect USB to pc when booted into DL mode.
P.S. Can you take a picture of the front and the back of the phone so I can identify the kind of phone you are using at this moment?
The name you are using for the device you have is kinda confusing me.

[Q] galaxy 5 I5500 briked

Hello apparently I bricked my Rom while I tried to reinstall cm 7 or 9 I cant remember from the recovery on clockwork mod I had backup done of that. But then suddenly the phone randomly decided to turn off in the middle of operation. Then the phone wont turn on and if it turns on by some miracle then It just stays at Samsung logo or PC does not recognize it by usb. So I thought that trip to service place would fix it cause i totally bricked the **** out of it lol. Anyways I got told that repair costs 95 eur and that the phone has water damage. Now keep in mind that I keep my phones in dry place and handle them with care in rainy conditions or so. So it is not had any water damage. What impresses me is that they didnt even take it apart. So now im stuck with my bricked phone again and nothing to do. So I was quessing of any specialist could tell me how could I do the unpricking by myself. (Not a noob on tech part) I can sometimes after removing battery and stuff get it in charging mode or download mode but it happens at random.
Maybe u could try soft unbrick ( I think its called so...) The program on the PC will recognize ur phone and it will unbrick ur g5:thumbup:
But please tell me: does the g5 turn on (is it showing any live?)
Sent from my GT-S5360 using xda premium
Well it depends. Sometimes it turns on sometimes it wont sometimes it will start downloading usb drivers while connected to usb and sometimes wont. It just does what it wants but when it turns on its frozen on samsung logo.
Can you get to Odin mode (Yellow triangle)? If you can, try going back to stock. You can get the firmwares at sammobiles.com. Make sure you download the correct firmware. If not working, try flashing ClockworkMod and flash a signed CyanogenMod .zip file. But my problem now, I cant go back to stock. Seems like Odin flashed the stock correctly, but Im stuck at glowing Samsung logo.
Try flashing again?
Yes! Try Odin if the yellow triangle appears. If u cannot get into download mode with button combination try an USB JIG which worked for me like a charm
Odin is the best Option
Sent from my GT-I5500 using xda premium
I reflashed the ROM from samfirmwares but I have the same problem. The phone is stuck in a boot loop after stopping and freezing for a bit at the Samsung sign
Okay. Now when you turn on your phone normally (power button), youll see the glowing samsung logo over and over again right. And it seems to go on until battery empty (I think). Try flashing ClockworkMod instead and see if it boots ClockworkMod. I revived my phone this way, but not able to get to stock.
why don't you go to you're local service?
