how to install xRecovery without root - XPERIA X10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Question as title

As far as I know, you can't.
Let me try to get it to you,
Installing xRecovery is done by copying 3 files to system folder which is by default is read-only.
Rooting gives you read/write access in order to make that.
This is the easiest way I can explain,
I hope I helped

Xrecovery Help

Hi guys,
I need help, my xrecovery wont start and the phone reboots normally. Im using a x10a, firmware .435 baseband .54. I installed busybox, and then using flashtool .9 i rooted the phone and then installed xrecovery, but it wont start when presing back after SE logo. Is there any way i can fix this problem? Ive researched in this page already but theres nothing about this.
Sent from my X10a using XDA App
you must press the back button during the sony logo appears.
if dont work repeat the installation of xrecory and busybox without the flash tool. follow this instruction http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=859571
sorry for my bad english!
It's not just a one-time press. On my X10, I have to spam it for about 15-30 seconds before it happens. As soon as the Sony Ericsson logo starts, hit that back button and don't stop hitting it until XRecovery starts. As I said, depending on the rom and phone, should take between 5-30 seconds.
maybe you didn`t install xre in your device successfully.
check whether these following three files are in the system\bin
busybox chargemon and xrecovery.tar
if they are in there ,than maybe that`s the way that you hit the back button is wrong. Not pressing it all the time, but hit it during the sony ericson is on your screem.
sry for my poor english
please try to re-install xcovery
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=859571
I have them, except for Xrecovery, which is not there for some reason. Ive tried to reinstall it, but it acts like if it was there already. Is there any way to clean erase Xre?? Im thinking about flashin, fixing the OS and then installing Xre again, since i dont have much data to save except for what i already have backed up in my sd card.

hit back button frequently whn SE logo appears.. it'll take u to xrecovery... if u hv installed it via FT .9 than its perfectly installed on ur mentioned BB,
Im really getting frustated :s I reinstalled the Xre installer and ran it.... however, the 3 files had a circule with a crossing red line (like the ones from no smoking signs) and that never changed no matter how long I left it there. Then I checked to see if the 3 files where there, and I think if was only chargemon present, then I tried (after flashing the cellphone) to manually install it (had the cellphone rooted with SuperOneClick) and tried copying those three files and it said they couldnt be copied into system/bin (tried different file managers and same thing). I honestly dont know what else to do, im reaaally frustated at this point. I would appreciate if you guys could help me.
At least is there any other way I could install FreeX10 Froyo 2.2 Beta 4 maybe by using flash tool?? can u please post step by step in case there is??
I would say reflash, root, and then reinstall xrecovery. that's the cleanest solution.
dont reflash! your system>bin folder likely wasn't mounted r/w. Just try again and before you paste the files click the 'mount r/w' button at the top.

Thank you very much, that really helped me!!!!
What I did was, in case it happens to someone else:
1- Download ES File Manager from the market.
2- Open it, hit settings and then Home Directory. I typed in the value "/" without the quotation marks, that way I could easily move around the folders. (Not necessary I guess, a matter of preferences).
3- Next is to mount the system files, by going into ES File Manager, settings, root options, root explorer, then hit Yes, HiAPK, and Mount File System.
4- Then, I had the 3 files (chargemon, busybox and xrecovery.tar) in my sdCard in a folder named Xrecovery, and one by one I copied them into /system/bin
Thats basically it, I rebooted the phone and by hitting the back button I gave me the Xrecovery menu.
Good luck
I had the same issue when trying to install xrecovery...ended up having to do a manual install. I think the process is described in reindeiros how-to noob thread..
Edit:I did the same as lsamuelcf...only used Root explorer instead.

i had same problem but then i thought of it and installed root explorer.... i changed to r/w and installed... i was trying for about 3 days before i solve the riddle...

[q] help. Urgent.

Hi. I accidentally deleted my system xbin file. Now I can't root or install xrecovery on my phone. Anybody can teach me how to restore the xbin file to the phone system? Sorry for posting it here...new member so can't post it at development...
You shouldn't be posting in development, dude! All queries go to either general or q&a

i think you should repair with SEUS and start again with rooting etc...
Which xbin are you talking about? The /system/xbin directory?
Maybe it's because the method you are using to root tries to installs the su binary in /system/xbin. Which method are you using? You could try another method, for example, if I remember well, when I used to use z4root, it installed the su binary to another directory.
Once root is working, you can use any terminal app (or adb shell) to recreate the directory.

This is a solution that surely would work.
Yeah..I'm talking bout the /system/xbin folder...I tried using z4root but it jams halfway...superoneclick doesn't work either..
I like the root option in flashtool, always worked for me when the others failed.

Use flashtool to wipe your data and get back to stock rom. Then you can do whatever you want with it.

Possible root method for locked bootloaders.

Hello there. As you will notice, I am new to this forum. I own the Xperia U (ST25i) handset, and currently run the .564 firmware. Unfortunately for me and multiple others, my bootloader is locked, and my phone is also SIM locked to Three UK. Now, I am aware that for users with an Xperia S, there is a method to obtain root access through downgrading to Gingerbread, then running a script of some sort and updating to ICS. But, as there is not an ICS update for the Xperia U as of yet, this method does not work. But I'm thinking; surely if the exploit RUNS in gingerbread, it could get access to system files and such, without the need of ICS? My understanding is slim, granted. But I'm familiar with rooting, ADB commands and the Android file structure.
I would like for anybody with knowledge to help in this, as it could potentially be a breakthrough in rooting all NXT Xperia devices without losing warranty.
Many thanks,
-Pokoby
UPDATE
Having modified the .bat files and testing both the original and the modified versions of them, I can confirm they do not work. The problem lies in gaining root shell access. ADB shell always comes up with a $, rather than a #. This means there is no access to any of the files in /system/, /data/ or any derivatives. Unfortunately, that is where all of the files used to root are kept. I would love to work at a way around, and will help in any way I can.

I have a xperia U with LB also. I´m not a developer but it would be great if someone could help with this idea.

Well, it'd be a tonne of help if you'd test my work with me
I've managed to get shell root, but for some reason it still will not let me push files to /system/ or to the /data/ partitions. Finding out a workaround. Although, I've noticed a "recovery" folder created in /mnt/sdcard/ by default (after I factory restored my ST25i). Wondering if the phone crashes, it'd load a .sin or .img file from it?
If anyone can help, do all NXT line devices have this folder in their /mnt/sdcard?
-Pokoby
Never noticed that. I´m upgrading my software and i you´l see if i have one named recovery.
Edit: I also have that folder. Any idea?

Kind of. On one of my friends' crappy Chinese android phones had one, and it booted either a .elf or recovery.img file from it if the system crashed in some way (as in total lock up, not just an app force closing). I may have to test this, but Sony aren't stupid, so I reckon it'll have something to do with engineering.
This is a folder created by system because i deleted and made a hard reset and the foder was there again. What is the purpose of that folder? How can we use it?

So far, I put the file for ClockworkMod Recovery in there. I made a batch file which essentially sends a couple hundred bizarre requests through ADB, which crashed the phone. Phone froze, did a reboot but no luck. I don't think there's any prime reason for it.
it´s not possible to put a rooted image file in there and use it somehow?
nope

More serious now.
Why does exist that folder?
Well good luck.
Realising that the recovery folder was relatively pointless from a rooting standpoint, I have managed to compile a bunch of .bat files which can and have successfully rooted my Xperia U. I believe I'll need to get permission from whoever made zergRush to distribute this, unless somebody tells me otherwise. Nevertheless, it is a modified version of zergRush. If you want technical details, PM me about it and I'll be happy to talk. But all it does is gain shell root access and push files, in a very similar way to that of the Xperia S rooting method.
I'll hopefully have an upload later today, but in preparation:
Use Flastool to flash the stock .564 firmware
Wipe EVERYTHING in Flashtool
Reflash the .564 firmware without wiping /data/ and such (Not too sure if necessary, but is required in the process)
Make sure you have the correct drivers installed for ADB and such (A no brainer)

Which phone are you using? There isn't an ICS ROM for the Xperia U. If you have the Xperia S, there's a seperate rooting guide available on these forums
Did you realy found way to root Xperia U,cant wait you upload files.
Hope it will work because I just need root, custom kernel is pointless.

Gonna have a go at some ADB pushing and pulling. Might do some little tweaks in build.prop, as a test. Will keep you all updated, and will hopefully release soon!

Use script that will just add lines to build.prop instead of replacing it whole if possible.

Is root absolutely necessery for flashing ports?

Hi everybody. I learned so much from this forum (and also from others) in one year and tried to share my knowledge to those who try to learn like me.
Now i would like to share one of my experiences. i dont know if someone wrote about this, yet i could not find anywhere in this forum. When we share a "port" for example "s4 keyboard for s3", we say that we need root access in order to use this port. But when i think, if this apk files replace themselves with the original ones and rom thinks that they are the originals, why should we need root access? Of course we need recovery to flash them but do we absolutely need root? And i flashed 3 separate ports (keyboard, launcher and callrecord) into a fresh installed 4.3 MK6 stock rom without root and they worked... and still do... (scripts have to delete odex files automatically)
Installing a recovery will increase the binary counter and since your binary is up why not rooting right? But those who dont want to root their phone but still want to use the visuality, can install a recovery and flash the ports without rooting... Tested and proven...
You need root access for applications/ports that will need to be installed in system directories (that only the superuser can alter). Some directories/partitions are read-only, so you have to mount the them as writable too. It all depends on the application.

If editing apps from rom then yes. But if you are flashing them through recovery you dont need root access for read and write permitions. Script also does that itself. Thats what im talking about
