ok, i recently bought this phone optimus one. I used to use LG KS20, a WinMo phone. Unlike KS20, which has so many guides about custom roms and flashing, i can't find the appropriate thread for P500 flashing.
Can anyone give me a link to a definitive guide? i wish the guide is stickied...
Second question, i tried rooting with z4root (temp root) and then my phone lagged so much, i had to turn it off. So the question is, why, and how to prevent it?
Also, can i cancel root although i've done a permenant root?
z4root can unroot your phone even through a permanent root. I think the temp root is just until you turn your phone off. Then it becomes unrooted when you turn it on again... I havent experienced lag when i rooted with z4root...
oh and there are only a few custom roms for the optimus one so far. check the Optimus One P500 Android Development forum here on xda IIRC there are 5 custom roms and one custom recovery for the Optimus one.
I'm SO SO SO SORRY, but could you (or any other saint) could be a bit easier on explaining to n00bs how to flash PROPERLY?
Neither the megatron nor prime nor amberhome has NOT got any n00b-friendly guide. Let me quote here..
How to flash:
First, reboot into recovery via 3-button-combo, ADB, terminal, w/e.
Partition SDcard (swap: 0, ext: 512), ext2-ext3, then ext3-ext4 it.
Wipe data (data,cache,dalvik-cache,ext).
Connect the device to PC, copy Megatron over to the SDcard, disconnect.
Flash it via "flash zip from sdcard"
Reboot

Whats the ADB? Whats the terminal? Is the terminal the terminal from a PC Linux? Linux Emulator? What? Whats ADB?
Please, be more n00b friendly... I love u guys

Maybe it hasn't noob guide because it is not for noobs.... sorry.
Just search for post with links to what you need to study before any flashing.

Believe me, I'm just as noob as you (well maybe not as ^^), and I just rooted AND flashed the megatron ROM.
So here is me trying to help you out:
Q:Sorry, but WTF? Whats three button combo? the KS20 had a three button combo, but the guys put a video and a word document to show how to do the whole thing.
A: It's Volume down + Home + Power button (in that exact order)
Q: Whats the ADB? Whats the terminal? Is the terminal the terminal from a PC Linux? Linux Emulator? What? Whats ADB?
A: You can enable USB debugging and use the adb.exe from SuperOneClick package, through the Windows Command Line interface (cmd).
Hope that helps
1.) you need to install custom recovery (this is the thing that will do the flashing and will let you restore your original settings if you screw up or dont like the new ROM). You cant proceed without it.
I asked for specific instructions regarding this and got answers by The_ERROR (thank you so much ^_^) so here is the link to the posts (#116 and 117)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=10316015#post10316015
Read about the custom recovery and make a backup before you mess around with new ROMs. and Terminal emulator is so much easier for me since I use a Mac (the phone handles the commands instead and no need for adb shell commands).
2.) select the ROM you want (i went with void since I cant handle Megatron's sd card speed requirement) and follow the instructions very carefully.
Oh and this is not for newbs so please read and study the steps before trying them out. Ask around if you are still confused. Thats what I did ^_^

While backing up the old recovery what do you mean by:
recovery-dump-T
My first line went ok in terminal emulator but second line didn't go ok. That's why I am asking this.
I've looked through the forums and such for an answer. But no answer is as simple as I need it to be.
Recently, I tried to root my device. I used fastboot and unlocked my boot menu or whatever it's called.
After all of this, it seems to run just fine, except it can't connect to the mobile network at all.
On any forum thread given, it says to flash the PH file or check the S-off and other things, and to be honest, I have no idea what these are. I just need a simple "do this and do that" help walkthrough.
What I want is to return the HTC Rezound to it's out-of-box state. Basically factory recovery. Please put it as simple as you can.
A bit of extra information is: I tried to root when my phone had the OST update installed, and forgot to check about it.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Making a major change to your device and not understanding the process is how you break things. You should read through and understand what you are going to attempt before starting.
You did put the cover back on?
Again, the most OBVIOUS fix is, have you put the battery cover back on the phone? Mostly when people first see this problem is that they leave the back off.when performing the root method, forgetting that the antennas are on the battery door.

Yes the cover is on the back of the device. I was watching a video playlist on YouTube that I followed and his turned out fine but mine just had to have the update I guess...how could I fix this?
Hard to tell you what to fix because we don't know what you actually did?

Idk
I'm not sure what I did , but I reset it's factory image and it seems to be as if it just came out of the box.
Now before I go about rooting it I'll make sure to make a backup image,
learn a bit more about what's going on,
talk to some of my dev buddies,
Try again, carefully.

I have the following:
Samsung-SGH-I777
2.3.6
I777UCKK6
2.6.35.7
GingerBread.UCKK6
I have spent a lot of time reading XDA and other Android Boards hoping I could find a pretty straightforward way to get control of my phone (su access?). I want to get rid of apps that T put on and I also want to be able to hotspot my phone. But I really want to understand what I am doing. Every thread seems to assume a level of knowledge I just don't think I have. I'm tempted to jump in but feel like I'll then just be a poster saying HELP BRICKED MY PHONE.
When I come across a youtube or pdf that looks promising - it invariably has comments associated with it like: Oh, if you upgraded to 2.3.6 watch out.....or, I did this and now my wifi doesn't work.
Here is my question - can anyone point me to a thread or website that really walks a novice through the basics like the difference between a Rom and a kernel, how the SD card works etc.
And certainly if someone can point me to a solid root procedure for my phone (see above) please feel free.
Thanks for listening

Sorry man, That level of knowledge you speak of, is what you need. If you cant find the info, dont root your phone.
We dont hold hands here, there is plenty of info around. Find it and put it to use.
If you searched for everything your looking for, you'd find your answers.
Its obvious that you HAVE NOT spent anytime looking for the answers you seek.
Good luck peter.
Like what was said above, getting the information for all these things is really simple.
Read the stickies.
All of the warnings and disclaimers are tacked onto the instructions because people don't want you to blame them if you don't follow directions or if something that works for someone else doesn't work for you.

It is really hard to brick your phone following the instructions here.
As long as you don't flash anything outside the AT&T Galaxy S2 Forums.
Id recommend Creepy's guide, Ive used this myself and can vouch for it. Avoid (no offense meant) using Zedomax's method to avoid the headache of breaking wifi and trying to get it back. and READ and RE READ before starting the process.
enjoy your soon to be freed phone
I very strongly agree with the advice to follow creepyncrawly's guide. Taking the time to read, understand and follow it will make the process easy and save you a lot of headaches. Don't be afraid to ask for clarification, but read, read and then read some more can't be stressed enough. Take it from a fellow novice.
I will continue to read and take the plunge soon. Definitely look into Creepy's guide.

That's an OK summary of firmware, but the use of the word ROM as a generic term for firmware needs a little explanation.
A ROM, or read-only memory, is a computer memory chip that has machine executable code built into it when it is manufactured. The code can not be changed. Later models of the chip were programable, and were called PROM, or programable read-only memory which can be programed once, and ePROM, or erasable programable read-only memory, which can be reprogrammed. These type of chips were used in the earliest micro computers, up until current computers, to accomplish the first step in the boot-up process.
Smart phones do not have a ROM or similar memory chip. They use NOR, P-SRAM and/or One-NAND, forms of non-volatile flash memory. The Galaxy series uses NAND memory to store the firmware. The iPhone uses PSRAM.
The use of the term ROM to refer to the firmware which contains the operating system for the phone is merely a convention, but one which has a huge amount of traction, so much so that we all use the term. There are some who would like to see the term ROM disappear in favor of the term firmware, but that is unlikely.

Moving to Q&A
All i did to root my sgs2 was get the proper drivers on pc (kies installs them i believe?). Downloaded odin 1.85 and any kernel that has cwm (i used siyah). put the phone in download mode (lots of places tell you how to do this). Put the kernel in the pda spot in odin. And flash.
Now you have a rooted phone with cwm (if all went right).
then you just download your favorite rom (i used serendipity 9.4) and place on sd card. Boot to recovery. Wipe cache/dalvik cache and factory wipe. Then flash your rom.
That's how i did it any way
Must be something in the water...

The bolded statement is inaccurate. If you followed this sequence exactly as stated, you were not rooted until you installed serendipity.
Noob to noob
The information creepy posted is the way to go. I used his superoneclick with root to get out of a failed clockwork mod loop back to stock with root.
The post was I777UCKH7OCD Root no BL.7z. This will give you clockwork mod recovery from which you can do further modifications.
The program is a 7zip file. READ about 7Zip. Follow the instructions.
Practice getting your phone into download mode (dry runs).
Don't panic.
After reading if you still have questions, read some more. All the information is here.
When you sucessfully root, look in the dev section and read about the custom roms/firmware and see how they operate, problems, successes before choosing.
Personally I like the AOKP by Task, but it is all preferences.
Good luck, you can do it.
As I'm planning to root I was going through some of the root methods and I found this one(Link: ) which I would like to follow. I have two little questions to ask you who is knowledgeable.
1. Can I use adb to reboot into recovery or download mode instead of all those button patterns? which I don't personally like to do.
2. Why in the above mentioned tutorial at last it is mentioned to remove yellow triangle, is it necessary to do just after the root or can it be done while unrooting?
Thanks in advance for you reply.
Please don't say to read stickies and all, I had already read it

I'm not sure which statements you mean because you forgot to add the link in your OP.
But, standard manufacturer policy is (and I like many others find this totally unjustified) if you root the device your warranty is gone. You SHOULD be able to unroot it so that the guys at sammy never find out you had rooted once but that's something no dev or anyone else can and will guarantee you. Therefore the "standard" disclaimer on every ROM thread.
I for one rooted my S3 (my first EVER smartphone btw) about 7 months after purchase, never had serious problems and would never go without root again. It's just too damn awesome

Hi guys,
Just wondering if I can get root without unlocking the bootloader. Seems that I;m hearing that this isn't possible, which makes no sense. I know Verizon is Verizon when it comes to locking things down(They were even blocking free games on dumbphones back in the day so that you would have to buy them, even when the manufacturer included them for free), but it seems that gaining root access is completely different than flashing a new ROM. Am I correct here?
Also, would towelroot work for this phone? I know it's a nice simple solution, but I believe their claim is for phones manufactured before Jun '14.
Lastly, would a solution like Safestrap work here? It's what I used on my last phone (S3), when Verizon locked THAT down.
I know it is a battle fighting Verizon on this, and I know it takes time, I was just wondering if I am reading this right, or if I could root, but run the standard ROM, just with the extra access... Really, the phone is working so well that I just want better control for things like deleting/disabling/freezing stock apps and such.
Thanks for any help!! Sorry if this is in the wrong thread, seemed appropriate.

I'm curious, the 'Fail' just means that it fails to work, right? Phone works fine after that and all? No bricking or need to restore? If so, that's a safe risk. Thanks for the suggestion.

Good luck with this but I have a feeling that unless someone has an exploit laying around, you'll need an unlocked bootloader.

you need an unlocked bootloader

and adb & fastboot tool, not root
To install a custom recovery

That's how I usually would do it, the way it's described in the articles, since I still have to get my v10 from Far East can't test it.

That's how I usually would do it, the way it's described in the articles, since I still have to get my v10 from Far East can't test it.

What you've mention is only working for tmobile V10, since it's bootloader can be easily unlocked while the other are not.

Thanks for clearing that up. Didn't know that and didn't see that on the article.
Cheers
I think if LG release a genuine ROM file, we could replace recovery parition with rooted one and flash it to our phone, that the only way open but LG hasn't released any ROM file yet.

Sorry, wasn't sure, as I was asking about development.... Sometimes this is like a scene form the movie Big Trouble... At the airport, "Arrivals or Departures"? "Well, we're arriving at the airport, but then we're going to be departing.".
