[Q] Need HELP rooting 1st gen droid version 2.2.1 - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am wanting to root my 1st generation droid version 2.2.1 so I can use wireless tether. I have searched all over the web looking for a way to be able to do this. I have tried several methods all have not worked. I tried z4root. It installed on my phone but when went to root it (temp or permanently) the app just closed, I tried rebooting phone and doing this several times, but still didnt work.
Super One Click was another one I tried.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682
I downloaded this from the web to pc and then rooted phone through pc. It says phone was rooted, and it installs super user. I can enable wireless tether and connect my laptop to it, but it says limited connectivity and therefore cant access any web pages.
I am new to this whole rooting thing, so please could someone help me out.

Wifi sharing without root? (Solved)

Ok I'm trying to figure this out sorry if this has been covered before I did a search and couldn't find the awnser to my problem.
This is my situation. My gf does not want to root her phone, But wants to use her phone while I'm gone to connect to her phones web.
I looked up on google and tried to download kies 1.5.3 because I found a method that allows you to connect via usb. Well i cant find the download at all for kies 1.5.3 So what I need is either to connect via usb or wifi sharing app.
So could anyone that either has the kies downloaded share it please?
Or, could you share the apk for wifi sharing please?
Thanks in advance.
I know there is an app in the market that says you can use it to tether your phone's data connection to a computer or whatever. It is $9.99 though. It does claim to be able to work without root. I have not used it, but wanted to let you know I have seen it. If you try it and it works, let us know, I am curious.
Try it right away and if it does not work, then you can get your refund within 15 minutes.
Thank you, You wouldn't know what the name is would you?
The specific one I am thinking of is called EasyTether. however I just put "tether" into the Market search and it brings up a few, some free some not, that claim to work without root. The easytether app even has a free "lite" version you can try out.
Good luck!
Ok sweet downloading it now. I'll post back to let you guys know how it works.
Thank you very much!
Ok, At the momment I'm using easytether to post this. I must say it works just as stated. Thank you once again I'm going to continue to test it out.
Hey that's awesome. My wife also does not want her phone rooted, so will use this if she needs to tether. Thanks for being the guinea pig!
Cheers
Hey guys Easy tether works great. Thats what I used before I rooted and installed custom roms on my phone months ago.
Edit: you said wifi sharing, Easy Tether is usb tethering which is much better because wifi tethering kills you battery quick.

To WiFi tether without root you're going to need a firmware that has the MobileAP application already installed. That will either require Odin, or root so that's out. Other than that you can easily usb tether without root. Don't even need special software if the system is running XP, Vista, or 7. See link below

The Q&A section is his friend too, which is why he posted here. He was provided assistance, and followed up on the help he was given advising us of the result. This thread topic, for now, has been resolved. No further googling is necessary.
I did find this in a search but, I was unable to connect with kies 2.0. I tried to find kies 1.5.3 but everywhere I looked I had to pay or do a long sign up to obtain it. Samsungs site only offers 2.0 which wouldn't allow my gfs phone to connect. I finally downloaded kies mini 1.0. I was able to connect finally but, the mini version doesn't have any option to tether via usb. She has used it most of the night and it works great. So at this point till she let's me root her phone and install cwm and a custom Rom,
This method is working great. For 9.99 I really can't complain as it works wonderfully for her. Once again thanks guys for all your help.

Edit: Just to make it clear the phone is being used to usb tether internet. The laptop at that time can now produce a wifi signal thus connecting other devices through wifi.

[Q] Help!! I am having Rooting Issues

Hey I am in need of some help.
Yesterday I decided that I need to root my ATT Motorola Atrix 4G in order to be to able to install third-party software and have the option of checking the unknown sources option and have full functionality of the phone.
So, I started by using the program Superoneclick and I followed all the instructions to the tee. During the rooting or shell rooting process it would freeze up at the 'running psneuter' and then loops and give me this message 'If it keeps looping, try disabling USB debugging now'. I did as it told me and it did not work. I tried the process over and over again for about 2-3 hours and still got the same issues.
So, after hours of researching and trying Superoneclick. I decided to use the Gingerbreak.exe found at briefmobile.com. So that worked I think because in Titanium backup it says it is rooted. What puzzles me is that the phone is supposedly 'rooted' but I don't have the unknown sources option to be checked. Also the superusers icon showed up but I do not even know what to do with that.
I would like assistances or advice when it comes to properly rooting my ATT Motorola Atrix 4G.
Thank you to anyone that can help.
my device doesnt show an option box to enable or disable sideloading but i can still sideload. i am pretty sure that i read the guy that made the hack didnt bother with the check box
also, if it doesnt work for you there is an app you can download from android central called the side loading wonder machine (or something like that). i have used it too and it works great when you are connected to your pc
I want to be able to install produces without having to keep connecting my phone to the computer.
Have you actually tried to install non market apps since rooting? As I said earlier, my phone doesn't indicate that I can side load but I can
Yes and it tells me i can't install it because i need to check that box. Which leads me to believe that the phone is not truly rooted. What do you think?
Being rooted and being able to side load are two different things. It sounds like you are rooted already so now you just have to enable side loading. Read the this thread carefully and see if it solves your issue

Thanks...what will this do exactly? and will i be able to receive the updates from att for the atrix still?
I did everything you did and it worked wonderfully thanks.
One more questions. How come I can install over the air from the market when i am on my pc? Why do i have to do it from the phone directly?

Is your question that you can or cannot use your pc to download to your phone over the air? You should be able to use your pc to push an app onto your phone from the market without wires.

When i am on the market website on my pc and i try to push an app to my phone it doesnt work. I have to go into the market store from my phone in order to get the app.
Just curious, what does this have to do with rooting?

Well i originally was having rooting issues. Now that I was helped and finally got my phone rooted i am experiencing this issue after rooting my phone. So why start a new thread?

Help! Can't Root! Tried Everything!

Hello fellow android-users. I have a problem. A problem that I can not figure out. My problem is the fact that no matter what I do I can't root my optimus v. I have tried literally everything and still can not root it. On the phone I've tried all known versions of Visionary, Z4root, easyroot, and universal androot. On the computer I've tried SuperOneClick but it always gets stuck on "waiting for device". I have searched so many forums and cannot find a solution. I think I could root it from the computer if it weren't for these bland general drivers I get installed on my computer every time I install drivers then plug my phone into the computer via usb. I have tried plugging it in to 3 different computers and always get these drivers. I have also tried 2 different usb to micro-usb cables (thinking that the one that came with the optimus might be charge only).Down below I have attached the drivers that always come up and what I think I should get (I screenshooted this from a youtube video). And all the lg android, virgin mobile, and usb drivers I have installed in various orders and mixed and matched but still no good. Also I have never had the phone get a usb notification when I plug it in.And yes I have Usb debugging turned on on the optimus. Although I have tried taking it off just for the heck of it.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
P.S. All i want to do is root it so that I can remove the bloatware and overclock it a bit.
Additional Information: Yes this is also posted on android central but I'm posting it here in hopes that maybe you all can help.
Additional Additional Information:I have tried every driver in every combination for the optimus v with never any luck.I have also installed linux on my computer If I will need that.Is there anyway to root it manually from the device itself, because that appears to be the only way. Here is a link to the official thread:forum(dot)androidcentral(dot)com/showthread.php?p=889790
If you try to connect via adb shell, does it successfully get you a "$" or "#"? Or does it say device not found?
This may seem odd, but try turning the phone off and doing the procedure for permanent root. Some have reported that turning the phone off fixes connectivity issues.
i rooted mine 2.2.2 with gingerbreak, very easy, install root and bobs your uncle
Try Gingerbreak..........works all the time
I downloaded the Gingerbreak v.1.2 app and when I press root I get "rooting....... running exploit..... This may take a few minutes! Device will reboot on success!" and I wait and nothing ever happens. And if yall are talking about the gingerbreak exploit on superoneclick I can't even get my computer to recoqnize my phone the right way.I've never had the usb notification thing pop up on the phone.I have downloaded every single driver for the phone and have installed and uninstalled them soooooo many times with no success. And I have had usb debugging on and tried rebooting several times with no luck. All i want to do is gain root acess to remove bloatware and overclock a bit.
Try all 3 versions of gingerbreak
Alright I already tried v.1.2,and 1.1, but it won't hurt to try 1.0.
remove any antivirus tht u have installed and try again
Alright I'll try that and get back to you
I tried it and it made no difference. Thanks for the suggestion though.
your sureshot is to downgrade ur device to froyo2.2. and then perform the root
Did u enable usb debugging mode? oO
josinpaul: My device is already froyo. The optimus v comes with froyo and I have not touched the OS. Also, how I would I do that if no computer can even recognize the device? (Not trying to be a jerk, just wondering if you could change the OS without being connected to the computer.)
ccdreadcc: Yes I have usb debugging on.And yes I have tried rebooting while I had usb debugging on and while it was connected to the computer via usb with no different results.
Keep your memory card unmounted ,I think here is the problem.
Sent from my LG-P500 using XDA Premium App
If you mean go to settings in the phone and unmount it then I already did that and it didn't make a difference. If you mean don't mount the sdcard when the usb notification comes up on your phone, then I have no choice.I can't get my phone to even get that (the usb notification). It's charge only when I plug it up to my computer and I have installed all of the drivers and tried everything (and yes a million times, I have usb debugging turned on). That's the whole point! I can't get the drivers to recognize the phone.I have tried it on 3 computers with 2 different micro-usb cords with never any success.
I wonder if your phone really is in USB debuging mode despite what it says. Here is a program to verify that you have rooted your phone. Gingerbreak should work on all firmware/android versions. What android version are you on? Many of the methods do not work on 2.2.1 or 2.2.2. If you go to settings/about phone you should see what you are running.
PS When you did Gingerbreak, was the APK installed on the phone or the SD card? Gingerbreak is mentioned in a number of threads. Have you check this thread? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=13086954
Verify your root with https://market.android.com/details?id=com.joeykrim.rootcheck
I am not rooted. That's what I'm trying to do.I checked my version and it is 2.2.1.And i have always tried running gingerbreak from my phone, but it just says "rooting" forever.
Upgrade to 2.2.2 and give it a shot?
Or jst try after a hard reset o)
How would I upgrade it to 2.2.2 if i can't connect it to my computer?

[Q] Unable to root this tablet

Hi everyone
I am still trying to root my Trio stealth g2 tablet. I need to update the OS on it to something newer that can use google play and the apps I have but first comes rooting probably.
Root with Restore by Bin4ry has been used, yet all it says is "please connect Device...", along with superoneclick but all it does is freeze up and stops responding every time.
I tried something called framaroot but it ended up being fake and started putting icons on my tablet so I am doing a factory reset.
Any help is appreciated. I have no idea what to do next.
Same thing when I tried it with my linux laptop, nothing happened
I got the bin4ry rooting process working with wine on Linux but it still says to connect a tablet by usb.
The tablet does show up now on the windows computer if I use a different cord. And I downloaded the driver from the adbdriverinstaller.exe but the rooting software still does not work.

[Q] Rooting Alcatel One Touch XPop phone for reverse tethering

I have been trying to set up reverse tethering so I can use the computer Internet connection on phone.
Phone is Alcatel OneTouch XPop
From what I understand phone must be rooted for reverse tethering,
Although it says it's a relatively simple procedure I cannot seem to make it work. Came across a program called OneClickRoot, which according to their claim is easy and simple, however it did not work..Procedure said enable USB debugging and click Root Now in the OneClick programme
But the programme could not recognise the device so was unable to complete it, went through faultfinding procedure but still did not work.
I am not that familiar with rooting so any advice or alternative procedures would be appreciated!
The simple matter may be, that the One touch XPop is not suitable for rooting, as I believe some phones are not?
