I am wanting to root my 1st generation droid version 2.2.1 so I can use wireless tether. I have searched all over the web looking for a way to be able to do this. I have tried several methods all have not worked. I tried z4root. It installed on my phone but when went to root it (temp or permanently) the app just closed, I tried rebooting phone and doing this several times, but still didnt work.
Super One Click was another one I tried.

I downloaded this from the web to pc and then rooted phone through pc. It says phone was rooted, and it installs super user. I can enable wireless tether and connect my laptop to it, but it says limited connectivity and therefore cant access any web pages.
I am new to this whole rooting thing, so please could someone help me out.
So after searching the vast horizons of XDA I haven't found an answer that really helped me. Nor have I found someone with this distinct issue. I have an unlocked Samsung Vibrant. I have not rooted it. I updated to J16 with that P.O.S. Kies Mini a few months ago. I hadn't noticed this problem until the last month or so but I haven't had time to sit down and curse at my computer long enough or offer supplications to Google until now. I've just been using Awesome Drop to get what few files I wanted onto my phone. I've had enough of that now. And...I also want to update it to Froyo but I can't do that if I can't get my computer to see my phone. I'm running a Toshiba Satellite A205 with Windows Vista 32bit.
I have checked the drivers and as far as I can tell, I'm using the right ones. I downloaded Kies Mini again today (I deleted it after I was finished with J16 because I wanted it as far away from me as possible) and it seemed to say something about downloading drivers as well. I tried plugging in my phone. Nothing new. So, I went in search of drivers again. I have searched and tried a few different ones but nothing has solved my problem.
The phone charges fine from my laptop. It hooks up immediately and charges without a problem. Unfortunately, my phone seems to regard the PC as a complex wall-wart. Debugging on/off, USB Settings on Mass Storage, Kies, or Ask on connection, it doesn't matter. It doesn't give me the option to "mount" as it has in the past. It doesn't do anything except charge. I've seen some people say it's a problem with their cables (I've only got one at the moment) but since my phone charges fine, how can it be a problem with the cable?
Only thing I hadn't tried was a factory reset. So, I sucked it up and tried that. Nope. No change. At this point I'm wondering if it's a hardware problem, not a software problem.
I'm out of ideas. Anybody else?
Well you can always root it, install ROM manager from the market, install clockwork recovery, download the ROM you want to install in flashable .zip format from your phone and flash away. A new ROM might fix your USB issue.
If you don't want to root it, see if you can get into download mode, and flash a new ROM using Odin. I would check with a different cable first, just to be sure that's not the problem though. It might save you some headaches.
If it was me, I would just root it and load a custom 2.2 ROM. I would also get Titanium Backup from the market and backup my apps and would do a nandroid backup from recovery before flashing anything new just to be on the safe side.
There's some good info on how to do most of that in this sticky post.

Ok i have been looking EVERYWHERE and it seems like all the guides are outdated and may not work if i have android 2.2.1 on the phone already.
I have
PVT 32A
HBOOT-1.33.0013 (SAPP31000)
in the settings on the phone it says my baseband version is 62.50Sj.20.17U_2.22.28.25 which doesnt seem to match up with the different guides out there.
PLEASE somebody link me to a guide that still works nowadays with android 2.2.1!!!!
Thank you!!!!!
The old guide on the cyanogenmod site should work fine. An image is provided to downgrade to like Cupcake or something, then you can root it. I was able to follow the directions a few months back on my wife's old mytouch 3g with no issue.
Where are you running into a snag?
Sent from my HTC Sensation 4G using XDA App
Thanks for replying. Well to start, here it says.
wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/HTC_Magic_(32A):_Rooting
About Screen
While booted go to Settings » About and look at the baseband version. You will see a long string with the last piece that looks like: 6.35.10.18 or 3.22.20.17 - that is the radio version
Except my baseband is something entirely different. I posted it in the original post.
Actually, if i just knew how to downgrade to cupcake for starters that would be great.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
Help somebody???? Everything on the net doesnt match up with my phone for some reason. Like its all outdated.
Which mytouch 3g do you have?
T mobile my touch 3g. Its white and DOES have the regular headphone jack. And right now it has android 2.2.1 on it.
32A
HBOOT-1.33.0013 (SAPP31000)
baseband version says 62.50Sj.20.17U_2.22.28.25
Currently this phone is incredibly slow! I mean to the point of some people considering it unusable. I use it. But its a real pain. This is why i want to root. See if maybe an older version of android or a custom rom like cyanogen will speed it up.
If i simply put SAPPIMG.nbh on a freshly formatted fat32 sd card and fast boot or whatever it says unknown fail update fail.

Yay!!! This appears as if it might work for me! Thanks so much!
Ok so im running into a snag even though im following this guid exactly. Im at the superoneclick part.
In the left pane of superoneclick it says
Killing ADB server Killserver 0.10s *server not running*
Starting ADB server Startserver 4.30s *daemon not running. starting it now on port 5...
In the right pane it says
*Daemon not running. starting it now on port 5037*
*daemon started successfully*
But its just sitting there forever. Nothing is happening. I have an hour glass for a mouse cursor. I have usb debugging on the phone turned on.
In my previous attempt to root my phone (following some other guide) i did use superoneclick and it said its been rooted but then wasnt. Or at least i couldnt do a su command (or whatever) from a terminal app on my phone. Could this previous attempt be messing with it?

Yes, it could mess with it. Did you reboot your device before trying this? It is recommended that you reboot your device after every root attempt.
I have definitely rebooted several times since the last attempt.
So, i just tried a factory reset and then tried super one click again with the same results. I of course enabled usb debugging and to allow non market apps.
What should i try next?

When using Superoneclick, did you follow all of its instructions correctly (especially disabling and enabling USB debugginig many times)? See here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=803682 and read the "Read me" for 11/10/2011.
Yeah i have disabled and reenabled usb debugging on the phone while superoneclick it trying to root like 10-15 times.

Okay. Try this method instead: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=4314039.
Ok, ill try that method next. But i just tried a previous version of superoneclick and its giving me the same results except it also says waiting for device.
If i look in my device manager on windows xp pro the only thing i have for drivers says android phone and if i expand that it says android composite ADB interface.
Is this right? Or do i need mytouch drivers on my pc? Are these drivers i am seeing part of the android sdk program?

You do need drivers for your device installed on your pc. Yes, they could be for that (but you still need your device specific drivers).
Another thing is im using a mini usb cord but the plug on the mytouch is shaped differently. But it fits anyways and works for charging and file transfers.
Where can i find device drivers for my mytouch 3g? I havent seen any anywhere.
I just got a used HTC One after being iPhone user ever since the very first one. I don't know what he did to it he only said it was unlocked for any carrier. I noticed the phone is acting a little bit weird, specially when I connect it to my MAC to try to sync some music, it makes my mac to freeze every time. I notices some USB Debugging every time I connect to my mac. So my friend told me, maybe the phone is rooted(whatever that means). He told me to find some icon saying SuperSU and when I click on it it says " There is no SU binary installed, and SuperSU cannot install it. This is a problem! If you just updated to Android 4.3, you need to manually re-root- consult revenant forums for your device". Well here I am trying to solve this problem. I just want to use my phone normally for now and sync music without my mac crashing all the time.
Can I just restore to an untouched andirod firmware just like I did on iPhone? Please any help is appreciated. I have some computer skills I used to jailbreak iPhone and hack PSP to run emulators. I also have a Windows computer available if needed. My friend told me is not easy but I think I can I just need to be pointed in the right direction and given NOOB level details.
I assumed this guy rooted the phone to be able to use it with any carrier then he updated and messes the crap out of it.
Writeu p
should I follow this write up to root? Is this like a clean install?
I'm Fairly New To The Android Concept, And I See Its A Little Bit More To Trying To Jailbreak It Vs. The iPhone, I'm Getting Stuck Using The Casual "NoYouVerizon" Concept Of The "One-Click" Method, But As Going On, I Don't Understand The Log's, I've Tried Searching For It Constantly, And I've Been At This For A Week Straight Now, I Need STEP by STEP Instructions On What To Do, Because I'm Reading Alot Of Different Things, And It's Not Really Helping Me At All, I Have A Verizon Samsung Galaxy Note 2, With Version 4.1.2 On It, and I Have *Correct Me If I'm Wrong* VRAMC3? If Thats The Right Thing. Please Somebody Help Me. Send Me A Message For My Contact Information. I Wanna Get This Done Pleasee!!!

One click root not working XDA. Someone needs to go back in and put the fix in for ERROR: No partition with identifier "60" exists in the specified PIT
Ive tried everything so far, even uninstalling the phone driver driver to allow samsung driver to reinstall, even manually installed the dev driver. I even tried to use odin3 to install via xda instructions. Odin can detect device if I just plug the phone in but if I put the phone in down load mode and connect, nothing. I checked device mgr and it shows the device in usb connections. WTF, XDA is verizon winning??????
Update:
Well I did discover after all this that I am rooted but I think that s all. When I plugged my phone into the computer Casuals usb showed in the Device Mgr screen instead of Samsung. To confirm I downloaded root checker from the play store and I am rooted via super user. Theres an issue though with putting the phone in download mode and odin detecting.
Update 2
Well it finally just worked and I was able to get odin to detect the phone while in download mode. I am now on root66 !! Help for others: Be persistent, I think it took time for my pc to accept and activate the changes IE: the casual driver replacing the samsung. It literally just happened after about 5 or 6 failed attempts of running the one click root. And it happened after a couple of samsung driver deletions. When the phone was plugged in, I went to device manager on the pc , usb devices and deleted the samsung drivers. I wound up doing this about 3 times. I restarted my computer after this to. Then I plugged the phone in again and there was casual usb controller appearing in device manager, replacing samsung. That was when I discovered I was rooted even though I had gotten the error message that started this post. Later, I went ahead and was able to install root66 by following the xda directions. wow......it was an all day affair but hopefully this will take some of the grey area out for others with this problem.
Thank you XDA for working to [email protected]^! this phone that verizon and google so graciously shoved up our #$% with a warm smile. The wi fi button for the notification bar is not available, I believe this is due to verizon when they put their stink on the phone. I would like to get that back if possible. Also the google search popping up when you plug the headset jack in is still there, but you can go into settings/task mgr/ all aps and scroll down to google search and disable it. The annoying pop up voice search hasnt showed up since I did this.
