I have been looking for an application which is a more powerful version of the WiFi Tethering already included in a phone.
I have been looking for an application on Xda, Google, and the Marketplace but none I have found provides me with the ability to see individual users (or Mac addresses) data usage.
First a little background on what I am trying to achieve.
I regularly provide a WiFi router for people with IPods and devices with wireless but no internet connection who need internet access to update games / browse the internet, and whilst my FUP at 500mb is quite low, I rarely use more than 20mb in a month so it doesn't bother me as beyond 500mb the connection is just limited to text and images (downloads and internet streaming are disabled after 500mb) which is all that I need.
However when my FUP has been exceeded alot of devices cant do the small updates this is no good when games or apps require it (as I have seen a couple even stop working till updates are completed) due to the connection being restricted. I have usually tracked it down to an over enthusiastic user who is watching videos on youtube, which has wiped out 100mb of my usage within 2 minutes on one occasion.
I am running both Android and Windows Mobile on my HD2, however I doubt WM will have a suitable app which is why I am hedging my bet with the Android market place, however a Windows Mobile version wouldnt go without great thanks, Whilst the built in "Portable Hotspot" of Android is good as it lets me restrict the number of users and see the Mac address of connected clients, it doesnt let me monitor their usage and then let me disconnect individual users them from the connection.
Whilst im sure there is apps for overall phone usage I am looking to monitor the individual devices usage as with 3-5 devices it is hard to distinct between legitimate usage and constant heavy usage.
Is there any Wifi Tethering app to let me do this?
To summarise:
Wifi Tethering App
Android / Windows Mobile
Shows Client Usage
MAC filtering (or alternatives which allow individual devices to be disconnected)
Preferably freeware however im sure I could be persuaded otherwise.
Thanks in advance
I was also thinking an app like this would be useful.
I can keep track of all data with 3G Watchdog, but knowing exactly how much data each wifi connected user takes up would be nice.
I realize this is thread necromancy, but did you ever find such an app? I too share my unlimited connection with coworkers, and there is one in particular that likes updating Xilinx (a "patch" is 8GB) and Windows Updates and so on over my connection. I am looking for something with QoS so I can put bandwidth caps on the heavy users that aren't my 4 machines.
Bandwidth ruler
There is an app called " bandwidth ruler free " for this . But this app monitors all users data connected to the Wifi hotspot . So it gives the overall data usage.
It can also set the download/upload speed for the wifi hotspot and this applicable for all the users .
it can also create multiple simultaneous data plans for the wifi hotspot.
you can download it via this link :
Also , you can find its description in the following xda thread :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-bandwidth-manager-android-t2972889
I've been using the Vibrant for probably a year and before that I had a g1 for quite a while. In that time I've used the wifi tethering with various ROMs I've loaded. (Docs Master v12 most recently)
I was streaming a podcast this morning and the stream suddenly stopped but never resumed. I opened a new browser window and was redirected to a t-mobile page on tethering. http://offers.t-mobile.com/tethering/upsell.do
From a few news sources/blogs, it looks like they are now able to monitor tethering activity after official upgrades to ICS. Some sources speculate that they can view the same with Rooted/ROM ICS phones now also. Additionally, it seems like sustained streaming or large downloads are enough to flag your acct.
I looked at my recent use from this morning and it shows ~76 MB of continuous usage.
Soooooo, what are you asking?
On my DNA when I run speed test it goes to a server automatically and I get maybe 12 mb speed. If I go into settings of speed test and select the server which is actually closest to me, my speeds are 40mb+. So my question is which one is my phone using and can I make my phone use the closer one?
Sent from my HTC DROID DNA
The servers listed in the speedtest.net app (I'm assuming this is the one you're using) have absolutely nothing to do with how fast your internet will be. No matter which server you choose, your actual internet speed will be just as fast. When you run a speed test, your phone uploads then downloads a test file to and from the remote server. This allows the app to measure how fast your internet is. When you aren't running a speed test, your phone isn't connected to the server any more, and the server has no effect on your internet. Some servers will tell you that your internet is faster than others because some of the servers don't have as high a capacity as others, and your connection may be too fast for them to measure. What does affect the speed is how good your home internet is. or how strong of a 4G signal you have.
Sorry if this is the wrong thread and I've looked across the entire Internet and I'm about to pull my hair out.
Across all three of my devices; Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy S3, and Nexus 4, my download speeds for downloading and updating apps on the Google Play Store have been unbearably slow, taking 20+ minutes to download 5mb. Only while using wifi though. HSPA+ data through T-Mobile is quick and painless.
I have Verizon Fios as my ISP. I've seen numerous other threads complaining about this issue across the Web but none offer any type of explanation or solution. While restarting the router/modem alleviates the problem for a few minutes, it's no use..
Also, might I add that YouTube has been unusable as well do to awful buffering. I think there may be a conflict between Fios and Google's servers. Whatever this is, I'm getting fed up. I can't download or update any apps on my Nexus 4 that I just got today, not to mention on any of my devices at all. Can someone offer any insight on this very annoying and unexplainable issue?
PS: I know it's not my Internet, speed tests reveal 20megs down and 5 up across all three devices and general Internet usage is awesome. Only YouTube and the Play Store have been affected.

Verizon FIOS + Google Services = PAIN
The exact thing is happening with my FIOS pipe to Google services!
Youtube has been challenges for months, but this past week Google Play has become completely useless from all my Android devices!
However, if I switch over to Verizon Wireless LTE connection, things SCREAM. Feels like Verizon wants me to use my Wireless data plan instead of my unlimited fiber fire hose! What the heck.
Rest of my Fios Internet service screams, seems to be mainly Google Services.
Nothing I have done has changed anything. I wish you had the answer or I had one that I could share. Needless to say, you are NOT alone in the pain!

same here
Just started noticing it this evening. I'm in NYC area with FiOS. Has been about 3 hours trying to update 4 apps at about 20 MB total size. Get 31mbps down on speedtest.net right now.
This is ridiculous. It's not like I can just use mobile data for everything either, I only have 2gb a month through T-Mobile.
YouTube has been TERRIBLE over the past few months, I'd have to agree with you.
Just recently Google Play is starting to suffer the same fate. What should we do?!

If I do anything network based that is NOT related to Google I get really great performance (as I would expect across FIOS). Start anything Google service related and it drops to nothing in a matter of seconds.
I have tried Android SDK image (just for laughs) on my development desktop and Google Services in it are just as network challenged. That would verify that is a Verizon/Google issue. That would be why none of my other service: Netflix, Amazon Stream, etc are effected.
I have the same problem with Youtube on my desktop as well. Things start and then just turn into a stuttering nightmare if they load at all.
Really Verizon!? Fiber and it cant stream 360 youtube videos. I think my old dialup connection could do that years ago.
Would calling up Verizon be a good idea?

Router DNS
Well as of today things are working better for me (excluding youtube of course) after I changed my routers DNS to use Google public DNS 8.8.4.4 & 8.8.8.8 instead of Verizon.
It seems to odd for it to be coincident that I changed it and restarted everything last night and performance went up dramatically. Use to use OpenDNS, then Google, then back to Verizon when I got new router from them. But went back to Google and Play is downloading like a demon again.
Fluke or real, not sure.

How would one go about changing the DNS of their network? Should I just Google it?

Router DNS Changes
This How To Geek How To should get you there.
I am using Google Public DNS ones with currently good results. My Play lag is all gone since last night when I changed. Once again, could be just a fluke, but if you are still having issues, worth a try. Can always reset back to Verizons they provide you when you dont set your own.

Good luck and hopefully someday we can have Youtube work on FIOS!

Using google public DNS solved both my issues with play store and youtube incredibly slow buffering. If you're using your ISP default or OpenDNS ones you should give it a try.
i have the same issue too, when we start using a DSL internet, video streaming on youtube is very slow and downloading at play store too.
Had the same issues, switched to Google DNS & now I'm flying again. Very very strange! Thanks for the help though!

Hi,
I've experience same issue. My android phone slow browsing when connected to wifi but its ok if connected to 3G. I've managed to solved the issue. This is what i have done.
1. Login to your router.
2. For my router there is one setting where you want to use IPv4, IPv6 and IPv4 & IPv6. On my router the default setting is IPv4 & IPv6.
3. I've configure it to use IPv4 only and save the setting.
After that i disconnect my android device and reconnect back. It works!!!

Dude! it worked! All my android devices were acting up only on my home wifi and I could not figure it out at all. Was getting orange wifi icons, slow play store and other google apps. And the few iOS devices I have in the house worked for some reason.
I came across the same issue. Slow playstore, youtube and Facebook. I disabled ipv6 on my router and then they stared to work. Maybe this can help anyone where the static dns didn't work.
I only use ipv4 D: and have google dns but it's still slow on the Play Store and Youtube. I've tried using a VPN and it's near my expected download speeds. Does anyone else have any other suggestions? It's silly that Aptoide would give me better speeds when I want my downloads to come from the Play Store.
ive got the same thing happening on my note 4. I've tried disabling ipv6 and using google DNS servers, but the Wifi is still very slow on play store (and all other apps). I've tried all kinds of stuff, even got a phone replacement from verizon and bought the newest router from FIOS.
Anyone else have this problem with alternate solutions?

Whoa! That did it for me. Thanks a lot!!
Hi y'all,
I was experiencing the same problems with Wi-Fi to my tablet all of the sudden. The speed test looked normal but play and YouTube was not. I realized that ipv6 corrected my problem under my apn instead of ipv4. I hope this could maybe help y'all.
After several years of trying different free and paid vpn's that won't drain my battery excessively I think I may have found the solution.
I have lifetime subscriptions for VPN Unlimited and Windscribe with Proton and Tunnelbear as my free ones. All drain the battery quite heavily. For the past 72 hours I've been using the Strongswan Ikev2 client to run Windscribe and it's been excellent. Zero abnormal battery drain. It's the first time I'm using Ikev2 and it's much more efficient than OpnVpn in terms of speed, battery and auto-reconnecting. The downside is that it only uses one port and can therefore be blocked by the isp or government, so if you live in a restrictive country then you're out of luck.
The screenshot below are my actual battery stats since I took the phone off the charger. This is despite Strongswan shown to be using about 35% of the battery.
I presume any Ikev2 enabled vpn will work just as well so you don't need to use Windscribe and I'm not endorsing them over any other vpn. Anyway give it a try and let us know how it works for you.
Update: Almost a week now and battery life is still normal. Looks like this really does work.
Yep, ikev2 is going to have much better speed and lower CPU usage on every platform (that's why it's used for Enterprise network vpns between firewalls). Also give wireguard a shot, extremely low CPU usage and battery as well

Thanks for the tip. I'll check it out.
I'm not sure many people know about this because all the searches I've done show complaints but no effective solution to the battery drain. Ikev2 and the right vpn client should be top of everyone's list when considering a mobile vpn.

Agreed. One of the other reasons though that people prefer openvpn is that you can run it over tcp 443 so it's not likely to get blocked on draconian guest networks like ikev2 might.

Understood. Under those circumstances your original app will still give you the OpenVpn option. But for an always on vpn for mobile the combination of ikev2 and Strongswan is excellent. It's permanently connected on both my phones now.
Yeah, IKEv2 is the way to go, better security and less drain on the CPU/Battery. I set up NordVPN on the Strongswan too and experienced slightly better results than with the NordVPN app. Though the app itself isn't bad at all.
I'd also like to say that using IKEv2 protocol through strongSwan has fixed my Android VPN battery drain issues as well. I have traditionally been using the NordVPN client on my Android device and it definitely introduces a significant drain on the battery, which is now gone.
Hopefully anyone else with similar issues will find this topic with a quick search and can apply the same solution to their problem as well.
So I am new to setting up vpn manually. I have been using nordvpn app for a while but battery drain has kept me from keeping it on constantly or using androids kill switch.
I just installed openvpn connect amd strongswan and using nordvpn server through them for oenvpn and ikev2 protocols. Is that the right way to go about it? How do you select which server to use as there are 1000s of servers. Should I be importing all of them into these apps. How do I decide which one to use at any time.
I ideally want to be at a point where I can just leave it on all the time without worrying it will drop connection.
Thanks

It's either OpenVpn or Strongswan. You can't use both as they use different protocols and OpenVpn will continue to drain your battery. Therefore it's Strongswan you need using the Ikev2 of Nordvpn.
Just import the servers you want to use, set and forget. Windscribe has a specific set of instructions on this but I don't know how Nordvpn does theirs. It should look something like "us.central.nordvpn.com" with a password and instructions on which boxes to check and uncheck. Once you're set up you use the Strongswan client exclusively and select any server you've imported from there. No need to even have the Nordvpn app installed any longer.
Hope that helps.
Thanks for your response. I was planning to use only one at a time ikev2 or openvpn. I juat installed both to see how they compare.
Anyways, one of my questions is that how do i select which server to use. If i use nord vpn app (which i dont want to) it shows me all the servers and load on them so I can decide which one to use.
With strong swan, I loaded one server on...but whats the best way to figure if aerver i am using is optimal.
Also battery drain is better than using nordvpn app, but it seems to get stuck every few hours and I have to dusconnect and reconnect. Also if I turn alway on vpn on in android setting, it drains battery lot more.

You've already answered your own question. Put as many servers as you want on Strongswan and use the Nordvpn app to decide which one to use.
I don't know what phone or android version you're using but both my phones are on Oreo and they don't have the always on option any longer. I just whitelist and enable autostart for Strongswan. It may get stuck but that generally depends on your vpn, mobile and wifi networks not Strongswan.
After my phone has been asleep for a while, when I wake it, the data doesn't work. Anyone else have this problem with strongswan? I've tried it using both windscribe and nord, same issue with both

I have the same issue on my Lenovo tablet running Marshmallow actually. It happens when it goes into deep doze and disables wifi. No such issues on Xiaomi, Huawei or Vivo phones as the settings are granular unlike the Lenovo tablet. Try disabling your sleep/doze mode if you can.
