I have a grandfathered unlimited data setup (part of my base
package not a 'data plan'). Is there a non-root way to do wi-fi
tethering short of the official hotspot option?
Open Garden worked really well with my DInc, but no idea if it would work with the Rezound and 4G. I will try it once I am rooted (requires root).

Non root? I dont think so... U can tether via usb without root, not wifi that im aware of

I'll try a few today and let you know how they work out.
I am rooted with the one click root, and it has wireless tether built in.
No, wifi tethering requires root. Try usb, or root it. Unlocking bootloader is pretty easy and safe being official and all. Root is also pretty easy.
Have seen some people say that open garden hangs when they try to stop the tethering, but so far it does seem to be the only app that allows tethering in infrastructure rather than ad hoc. And yes you do need to be rooted.

OK... After sacrificing my ability to tether by moving from CM7 xronified to ICS, I have tried all kinds of combinations to tether my Epic 4G Touch to my TP on ICS (currently running CM9 alpha 2).
I came across the app foxfi in the market and it WORKS. I am still on cloud 9 at the moment, but has anyone heard anything bad about this app? It doesn't behave like open garden or wifi tether, but its freaking working. I am posting from the tethered connection right now.

What tethering app are you using?
I must be missing something, how is it possible that what version of Android your TouchPad is running effects your phones ability to be a wifi hotspot?
I have never had an issue with using the built in wifi portable hotspot in Android to tether my TouchPad. If you enabled that on your phone when you were running CM7 on your TP, how would ICS affect that.

Touchpad doesn't play so nicely with all tethers. Consider yourself lucky. Alot of people dumped their TPs because they couldn't get tethering to work. It is very buggy. All 3 of my TPs don't tether at will. In the past, there have been different protocols to get each to work. My hotspot could be seen by every other device I own, but my TPs couldn't see it. There are tons of bug threads relating to wifi, but nothing really talking about tethering. I saw a few other threads in forums for phones addressing touch pad, but why not have a place in the touch pad forum to bring it all to one spot?
Now Foxfi works with all three TPs and no ceremonial switches and reboots are required to get it to go.
Mine tethers from my Atrix perfectly with the built in setting. didn't know people were dumping their tp cuz of tether.

Dumb ?
Read what was here, but question:
Do I need to root my phone? I have the HTC Incredible 2, and am not trying to root that and just trying to connect my Touchpad (wifi-only) to my phone and be able to use internet, market, etc.
What apps and instructions would I need?
I thinking only people on Sprint (or Verizon?) have that issue....I tether my tp with my Samsung captivate on ATT all the time...so does my Sister from HTC sensation on Tmobile....
@Salvation27/: u csn try this app Clockworkmode tether

As far as I know, without rooting, you will have to pay for the hotspot service by your provider in order to tether. I would say try PDAnet, but I haven't heard of anyone successfully tethering via BT.

That could be the issue too. I will test it with some of my friends phones and report back (might be a day or two). I didn't think about a possible conflict with carrier specific phones.

According to the info on the Market, Foxfi does not require rooting. But you will need to check to see if it is compatible with your phone.
I have a rooted Bionic, works really sweet with it.

I use freetether on my pre2 to tether-via-wifi with my touchpad, works great.
You're right about the bluetooth. The option is there, and I can get everything to link up, but it still doesn't seem to be actually sharing the internet connection. I thought it'd be brilliant to get bluetooth tethering going (it should use a bit less energy to tether, giving me better battery life), but it doesn't seem to work in all the testing and fiddling I've done...

Hello,
I didn't see a forum for the Razr Maxx, so I'm posting my question here in the Razr forum. On my HTC Incredible, I am able to change the 3G Mobile Hotspot settings by dialing ##778, selecting Edit Mode, entering 000000, opening M.IP Default Profile, and editing the NAI and DUN NAI fields by removing the "dun" from the address. I cannot seem to figure out how to do this on the Razr Maxx. Does anyone have any idea how to do this for the Mobile Hotspot on the Razr/Razr Maxx?

yup. Im rooted but rocking FoxFi. no issues. I was downloading a torrent the other day while tethered, was coming down at 2.7M a second. fixFi RICKS!!!
I have heard of Foxfi, and I will look into that, so thank you for the suggestion. But, I am still interested in the setting that I described for two reasons. First, other Incredible users have reported slow wifi speeds when using a 3rd party app as opposed to Verizon's 3G Mobile Hotspot (or just Mobile Hotspot on the Maxx), although I have not heard anything about speed with a 3rd party app on the Razr Maxx. Second, I am just interested in knowing more about my phone.
Perhaps someone can answer your specific questions about settings, however, I will talk a little more about FoxFi- speeds on 4G are ridiculously fast. I ran FoxFi on my Maxx and my Acer Iconia tablet was getting over 25mbps down speeds and 14mbps up.
It's not a perfect app. Occasionally, you'll have to stop and restart the hotspot to get your device to "see" your Razr, but overall, it's great... and once connected, rock solid.
Additionally, it appears to me that fox fi somehow uses the phones native Hotspot connection but bypasses it. I used to use Wi-fi tether rooted on my last phone and I never saw phones hotspot pop up. But on the RAZR unrooted, I can also affirm that the previously mentioned speeds are real and accurate. The app is great.

Never had problems with foxfi and resetting it. The speed that you get trough the phone/tablet apps are artificial.

Well I just finally rooted a few days ago and installed Wifi Tether and it works right out of the box, but based on recommendations here I decided to try Foxfi and it connected but it had some error in windows (which on the Foxfi page they say to run the internet repair wizard) well I ran the wizard and the problem persisted so instead of trying to trouble shoot I just went the easy way and use Wifi Tether.
I installed Foxfi. The first time I connected to it, I had no internet access. But the second time and since then it has worked fantastically. I am very happy with this solution, and I thank those of you who have suggested the app to me. If anyone has any ideas, it would still be nice, however, to know about the NAI settings and if they're accessible/editable. Just for tinkering's sake.
Does anyone know how foxfi speed compares to native tethering speed that rooted RAZR users might enjoy?

I've just confirmed this work. I rooted my phone about an hour ago but im pretty sure that wont make a difference. I love how it actually turns on the Verizon hotspot too lol now i wonder how long it will take for them to notice this? Hummm
I was using the sqlite edit with my bionic and tethering for over a year, no problems. But then again I only use about 8gb a month which isn't much compared to some people on here.
The best app that I've ever used was PDANet. It has a Bluetooth net access recently added (using it right now) the license is worth it for a laptop and tablet. I had it on my original Motorola DROID and I would use it with my laptop all the time in places without wifi and I would drive people nuts! Best part is, NO ROOT REQUIRED! Verizon doesn't block it (or can't) so no worries there and I think with wifi hotspot enabled you can have up to 10 devices using it. The directions are simple to follow, however, I did have some trouble locating PDATablet for use on my tablet, but found it on another android forum. Now they have it on the play store.
I'd post a link but, I've been a longtime listener but a first time caller!

Guys there is no reason to use a third party app. Just create a widget to start tethering, or download "portable wifi hotspot", all it does is activate the stock hotspot without the subscription check.
I really like the settings that wifitether had, especially subnet. If you know of a way to modify the subnet on the built in hotspot, then I am one step closer to replacing wifitether

hi - I get you can tether right off the phone- however Windows 7 sees the tether natively as a local IP connection :good: but it's frozen as in I can not access the properties it pulls a 92 address with a gateway but I can not ping it and it does not connect to internet- do i need a tether program still on the PC side?
