Tether your Touchpad - TouchPad General

OK... After sacrificing my ability to tether by moving from CM7 xronified to ICS, I have tried all kinds of combinations to tether my Epic 4G Touch to my TP on ICS (currently running CM9 alpha 2).
I came across the app foxfi in the market and it WORKS. I am still on cloud 9 at the moment, but has anyone heard anything bad about this app? It doesn't behave like open garden or wifi tether, but its freaking working. I am posting from the tethered connection right now.

What tethering app are you using?

I must be missing something, how is it possible that what version of Android your TouchPad is running effects your phones ability to be a wifi hotspot?
I have never had an issue with using the built in wifi portable hotspot in Android to tether my TouchPad. If you enabled that on your phone when you were running CM7 on your TP, how would ICS affect that.

Touchpad doesn't play so nicely with all tethers. Consider yourself lucky. Alot of people dumped their TPs because they couldn't get tethering to work. It is very buggy. All 3 of my TPs don't tether at will. In the past, there have been different protocols to get each to work. My hotspot could be seen by every other device I own, but my TPs couldn't see it. There are tons of bug threads relating to wifi, but nothing really talking about tethering. I saw a few other threads in forums for phones addressing touch pad, but why not have a place in the touch pad forum to bring it all to one spot?
Now Foxfi works with all three TPs and no ceremonial switches and reboots are required to get it to go.

Mine tethers from my Atrix perfectly with the built in setting. didn't know people were dumping their tp cuz of tether.

Dumb ?
Read what was here, but question:
Do I need to root my phone? I have the HTC Incredible 2, and am not trying to root that and just trying to connect my Touchpad (wifi-only) to my phone and be able to use internet, market, etc.
What apps and instructions would I need?

I thinking only people on Sprint (or Verizon?) have that issue....I tether my tp with my Samsung captivate on ATT all the time...so does my Sister from HTC sensation on Tmobile....

As far as I know, without rooting, you will have to pay for the hotspot service by your provider in order to tether. I would say try PDAnet, but I haven't heard of anyone successfully tethering via BT.

That could be the issue too. I will test it with some of my friends phones and report back (might be a day or two). I didn't think about a possible conflict with carrier specific phones.

According to the info on the Market, Foxfi does not require rooting. But you will need to check to see if it is compatible with your phone.

I use freetether on my pre2 to tether-via-wifi with my touchpad, works great.
You're right about the bluetooth. The option is there, and I can get everything to link up, but it still doesn't seem to be actually sharing the internet connection. I thought it'd be brilliant to get bluetooth tethering going (it should use a bit less energy to tether, giving me better battery life), but it doesn't seem to work in all the testing and fiddling I've done...

[Q] What does everyone use for wifi tethering?

I have a TB and a Wifi XOOM, and I have been using the mobile hotspot app to share my 3g/4g connection to the XOOM for a few days now with no problems. Yesterday I installed the Gingeritis ROM and have been experiencing some weird issues...
The Wifi connection remains stable but after about 30-60 minutes I need to restart my phone and re open the hotspot app to get a data connection again.
The reason i'm posting this thread is for two reasons: one is to find if anyone has the same issues using Gingeritis that I have experienced, the other is to find out if anyone has other methods of tethering that they recommend.
I used to use the Wireless Tether app on my X but have not tried it on the TB since the mobile hotspot app has been free so far; will that work?
Any recommendations are welcome, especially soon because i'll be on a train for 3 hours later and if I don't have to keep rebooting my phone that would be nice.
Thanks

I use the wireless tether app on my rooted TB. Works great, never had a problem. Another app you can try is Barnacle, you can get it from the Market. Both have worked great, I used to us Barnacle more because it let you control the amount of power the radio put out and thus save on battery lifr. However, I can't seem to find that option any longer. Try Wireless Tether, I've used it with multiple PC and iPads with no problems!

***EDIT*** (Turns out that even though its in "My Apps" under the market on my TBolt, I cant update it unless I turn off the radio. If you click on the app after its installed with you radio on it "cant find" the app. Verizon really doesn't want you to have that app I guess. Whatever though, you can download it from market over wifi.)***

Ditto. I keep Barnacle and Wi Tether both so I can switch from time to time.
Both have always worked well.
I use the Sprint Tether app on the EVO 3D port, the T-Mobile Tether app on the Sensation port, the inbuilt Verizon app on stock (free until July) or the built-in FroYo tether on AOSP ROMs. There's no reason to download another app when these are pre-installed.

I too am trying to tether my x2 running eclipse rom to my player with barnacle. I tried open garden bluetooth and it wouldn't work. Can you explain how to replace the thing with barnacle? Thanks!
It found my Optimus-V hotspot in a few seconds, just using the hotspot widget in Widgetsoid2. I've onlyhad the need/desire to tether once since I have wifi at home and work. Not supposed to tether with VM anyway
Ditto to the above, what works for me is using wireless hotspot app. I have my Epic 4g running a custom ROM called CleanGB http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1344074 and it includes a 'custom' WireLess Hotspot that I leave running so my wife's Galaxy Player 5 can jump on my 3G/4G via WiFi. (don't get me going though on the slug and almost non-existent Sprint 4G)
Find it interesting (and frustrating) that Barnacle calls itself a ' WiFi tether' but is actually a wireless hotspot. Tether in cell phone speak has always implied a wired connection between your phone and another device. Hope those lines don't start blurring.
Best tethering (phone to computer via USB cable) IMHO is hands down PDANet from a company called June Fabrics. It works seemlessly in Windows XP and Windows 7. Even if your provider charges you to use tethering via their Android or Blackberry app, PDANet can hide the data connection.... They also make one for the Mac OSx environment I believe.

[Q] Infrastructure Wireless on rooted 2.3.4 DX2

Ok rooted by DX2 very quickly.
Now, when I go to run any of the Wireless Teether apps, none of my mobile devices see it. I believe this because I can only get these apps to run in Ad-hoc mode. I am on v2.3.4.
Do I need to flash a custom rom in order to make this work, or is there a fix somewhere?
Alot of stuff that I am finding when I search is from 2.3.1 or 2.2.
Any point in the right direction is appreciated.
Thanks,
-Sf-
I believe you have to do the TBH radio hack to use infrastructure instead of ad-hoc. If you do this then you can use the mobile hotspot app which runs in infrastructure.

those are the only two methods I'm aware of, and I keep fairly close tabs on that one
There's also this. I don't know for sure if it works on our phones or not as I've had no need to use it. I'm running CM7 and it comes with wireless tethering. It looks just like the Verizon wireless hotspot app though. Perhaps that hack is how it's done on CM7. Can't hurt to try it
Thinking about it again, I'll flash back to a rom that has VZW's app on it and see if it works. I'll report back.
EDIT:
Guess you can scratch this idea. I tried it on Liberty and on a stock rom. Doesn't work.
I've got CM7 and my friends moto phone was able to connect. Just used the built in tether in wireless settings in CM7
The other apps only do ad-hoc with out phone so you can connect your laptop but not anotyer phone I believe.

Foxfi is good enough for systems where adhoc networks don't matter. The only way I have been succussful with tethering on the touch pad is with root and Wifi Tether app. Just Google it and side load it as it is not in the market. I hope that helps.
instead of using androids built in wifi settings to connect, I use "wifi analyzer". its free in google play, and allows you to see and do things that you can't using stock wifi connection settings. You can set different channels for a 5ghz as well as b/g/n 2.4ghz, as well as reconnect options etc etc. it's a nice way to see which channels are best to connect with.

just because a device is rooted does not mean it will automatically see an ad-hoc connection from another android device. ad-hoc/peer to peer connections from droid to droid are tricky and flakey alot of times or just wont work at all depending on the kernel. everyone usually thinks that tethering and hotspot are the same thing. they are not. there is a big difference between ad-hoc and infrastructure connections.
FWIW, I have zero issues tethering my TP using the stock tethering feature of my Galaxy Nexus.

You don't need to root to solve this. You can download Portable wifi Hotspot from the Market for free. It works great.
Root was a piece of cake with Chainfire's Exynos root exploit apk. And, as others have mentioned TrevE wireless tether is working much better than the native Verizon hotspot which was experiencing intermittent LTE disconnects, slow data throughput and connectivity issues with one of my older devices. Ran overnight without any LTE disconnects so far.

I've tried barnacle and wifi tether both do the same...will try some others. Went to beans' build 3 not doing it so far. Maybe something got fixed in the update. Am using phones native tether setting/app fyi.
Thinking of going to the clean rom 4.1.2.
Has anyone had tether problems with this rom? Specifically with 4g dropping out?
I didn't read this whole thread but if your 4g is dropping out its because your using the stock tethering and its not been hacked this is normal for it to drop out constantly and very annoying like. My s3 does it to. Use WiFi tether treve mod and again I didn't read this whole thread so if it has already been said just ignore my comment. Good luck. If you don't know what treve mod is I can't remember if its built into aroma with duild 3 or not but if its not and can't figure it out. Step over to the Verizon s3 section find treve mod and set up your note 2 the same way they say to set up the s3 and you'll be good to go. Again if this had been said ignore me. I'm bored. Hope it helps someone.
I pay for the unlimited hotspot feature from Verizon, and I often have the same issue on my stock, unrooted Note 2. It doesn't happen all of the time, but there periods where it constantly cuts in and out, especially when connected to a PC. It was also a problem on my Galaxy S3, RAZR MAXX, and Galaxy Nexus.
If you search around online, you'll see that people using the stock mobile hotspot app have been having the same issue for years.
Stock hotspot app AND Trev-E wireless tether does this to me constantly so it's got to be something else.... Its strange because some times it won't do it and then there's times where i'm dead in the water without the ability to tether. Yes I pay for tethering (plan).
My previous Galaxy S3 did the same crap to me as well... Thinking its a Samsung thing.. modem bug/kernel bug probably.
Anybody find any fixes/solutions?
Mine has done it periodically since I got the phone. Both stock and various versions of beans and clean rom. I just restart the phone and device connecting and it takes care of it. Happens maybe 1 out of 100 times.
A contact at Verizon says he sees people complaining about it sometimes and another one at sprint says the same thing.
