Hello
I just purchased and installed a LauncherPro Plus on my myTouch 4G. The application is apparently incompatible with the standard dialer on this phone. I didn't use the non-Plus version of LauncherPro before, so I can't say whether this problem is specific to Plus version. So, here is what happens.
Firstly, let's take a look at how the standard dialer works under HTC Sense. I enter the dialer by hitting the receiver icon and I immediately see the following screen (see the attached picture #1). It shows my last dialed contact and has a "Enter name or number" prompt in the middle.

"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",

}
As I start dialing the number ("408" in this case) the "Enter name or number" prompt disappears, replaced with "408" and the top of the screen now contains the search results for the sequence I dialed so far (see the attached picture #2).
All works as it should.
Now, let's try using this standard dialer from LauncherPro Plus.
As I enter the dialer from LauncherPro Plus (by hitting the receiver icon) I right away get the following strange picture (see the attached picture #3).
Right from the start it doesn't look right. Note that there's no "Enter name or number" prompt. And instead of the last dialed contact I see some strange search results that includes all my contacts (I have 59 of them total) with pictures, but no names or numbers under the pictures.
Why does it happen? I could make a good guess: when you enter the standard dialer from LauncherPro, it immediately pre-dials some weird invisible character. This pre-dialed character makes the "Enter name or number" prompt disappear. And this pre-dialed character makes the dialer to perform the search for matching contacts. Since all 59 contacts got included into the search results, it must be some kind of "empty" characher (which is why it not visible on the dialer screen).
Another possible confirmation of that above theory is that I can actually delete that invisible pre-dialed character by hitting the "backspace" icon on the dialer screen. Once I do that, the sceeen changes to what you can see on the attached picture #4.
Note, that now the screen looks almost normal. The "Enter name or number" prompt is back. But the weird search results are still there.
Hitting the "backspace" does not really get the dialer back to normal. If I try dialing the phone number (the same "408") the dialer appears to act normally: each digit makes the expected dial tone sound and the search results change accordingly. However, the digits I dial are never displayed on the screen. The "Enter name or number" prompt now refuses to go away. See the attached picture #5 - it shows how my screen looks after dialing "408". The search worked fine, but digits "408" I dialed are not displayed.
So, again, I don't know whether the problem is specific to Plus version of LauncherPro, but in any case it is safe to say that the current version of LauncherPro Plus is not compatible with the standard dialer used in this phone.
Umm using the xda app most of these aren't showing... Weird
Only thing I can say its I use launcher pro plus and mine works.

I tested another myTouch 4G with LauncherPro Plus and the behavior is the same as mine (will try to locate and test more phones).
Note that the dialer "works" in a sense that if you open dialer and dial a number, disregarding any user interface quirks - it will indeed successfully call that number. I.e. the physical dialing functionality is there, it is just the user interface and search functionality that's broken. For this reason, many people probably don't even notice that something is broken and believe their dialer "works". So "mine works" is not really a precise/useful description. I want mine to work under LauncherPro exactly as it worked under HTC Sense, including GUI, search and everything else.
Unfortunately, LauncherPro web site has been in ruins for a while, so I can't post it there.
I've never had this issue. Not sure how LP could effect the dialer, since the only thing it effects is the home screen. Thats strange.
No problems here. Can dial any numbers and it will start a search and display all the matching contacts. Also displays the number im dialing.

Great, but that's not exactly what I'm talking about. Here's a link to my thread on LauncherPro forum
http://www.launcherpro.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=14&t=5884
Again, when you enter dialer from LauncherPro and just ignore the weirdness of the screen, i.e. just start dialing the number right away, then the dialer will appear to work fine: the numbers you dial appear on the screen and the search works properly. This is probably the reason many people don't notice something is wrong.
So, the weird things are only noticeable when you just entered the dialer, but haven't started dialing yet (no "Enter name or number" prompt, for example). Weird things also happen if you hit "backspace" right after entering the dialer.
I already had a chance to try this on three phones in person, and I also got several confirmations from other people that they observe exactly the behavior I described (some from different phones running LauncherPro Plus). One poster in that thread originally experienced an issue with entering first character of USSD codes under LauncherPro (I have a reason the believe that the issues are related).
I could be wrong, of course, but at this time I assume that [most] people who say that it "works" on their phones simply are not paying attention to the issues I described. As I said above, if you enter the dialer and just start dialing right away, it works fine. No surprise that some people might not even notice that something is amiss.
Again, if you are running LauncherPro Plus, please try the following:
1. Just enter the dialer. Do you see the "Enter the name or number" prompt? If you see it, they your phone appears to be OK. If you don't see it, proceed to step 2.
2. How hit the "backspace" icon on the screen. The "Enter the name or number" prompt should appear now.
3. Now try dialing a number. The number should dial, but the digits should not appear on the screen (the "Enter the name or number" prompt should just stay there).
Do you get this behavior on your phones? As I said, so far I only had a chance to physically try it on three phones, and all three reproduced the same broken behavior.

LP does not affect home screen only. LP is a launcher, as the name suggests. Launcher is responsible for launching other applications per user request. When you hit the dialer icon, it is LP that registers the hit and it is LP that launches the dialer application in response. Apparently, LP is launching the standard dialer incorrectly, which results in the strange behavior I described above.

Weird...None of these issues...
Confirmed.
Hey man I just checked it out on mine as well and I can replicate the same error. Irritatingly enough I never noticed the issue and now that I backspaced in my dialer it made it so I couldn't backspace numbers anymore at all!
I pulled my battery and that appears to have corrected it, but yeah something is not operating correctly, but I'll be damned if I understand how launcherpro could have done that, but its obviously a common link.
I'm going to play around with it more and see what I can see, but thanks for bringing this up.
ANYONE WHO READS THIS WITH LAUNCHERPRO GO TO THEIR DIALER AND HIT THE BACKSPACE BUTTON ON THE TOP RIGHT OF YOUR SCREEN. I think a lot of people, myself included, skimmed your message and didn't read the details =P
I ran into this exact same problem with LPP. I switched to Dailer One from the Market. It's not the perfect Dialer, but it does have some cool features and it's free. I figured the guy who wrote LPP will eventually fix the problem. Until then Dialer One will have to suffice.
Good luck,
Dave

you know I have noticed this for sometime and thought it was the dialer that was acting odd, If you arent noticing it, then you really arent paying attention because the issue is there...
Another launcherpro plus user here, and I haven't experienced this issue either. I've tried to recreate the issue, but it never happens. That sucks.
Do a logcat and see if federico will take a look at it.
I can replicate this error. I know my dialer has worked in the past. Good catch though! Hopefully we won't have this problem when the re-write gets released!

Cool! It works! Thank you.
Long-click the dialer icon in LP, and set it to blank. Then long click the empty space and set it back to `Phone` application (which is the standard dialer). After that it will work perfectly fine.
I can confirm that recreating the shortcut worjs. Good find.

No problem guys!
...its seems the issues might not be in launcherpro itself but in the way sense handles the change.
Its always a good idea to let the dev know anyways just incase it a bug and to get well needed updates ;-)
Thanks!!! Now does anybody know, if there is a way to change the unknown caller default pic??? I've looked around here & Google but keep striking out.

You absolutely can! You just have to modify the pictures in the framework-res.apk. It should be in the drawrable-hdpi folder. Just pull the apk with adb, then open the apk in 7zip. Navigate to the folder, just drag the new images you want (need to be the same name) into the zip, then confirm the transfer. Return to the root of the apk and it will ask to update the files, agree to this and push back with adb. Reboot and that should do it!

Ok, so I'm running bone stock dcd 3.2.5 - no kitchen used. I upgraded from the stock verizon rom, so these two roms are all I know. The dialer included is different from stock (I believe it's the vogue dialer? correct me if I'm wrong) Well one thing I noticed is there doesn't seem to be a way to get to my contact list like the stock dialer, without quitting the dialer app itself? (Please please correct me if I'm wrong and how to get to it!)
I thought the "Hide Keypad" button, was what I needed. It brings me to a "Calls + contacts" list. However, underwhere it says "Verizon Wireless" but before the first call/contact in the list, is a large blank space (in either screen rotation). It's around 1/4" tall. It's normally the same grey that is behind the "Verizon Wireless" header at the top. But if you cursor up in the list to the top, or click/touch the space, it turns red (I'm running a red theme) - like something's supposed to be there. But it does nothing, even if you hit the select button etc. Just changes from grey to red, depeding on if it's selected.
It seems to me, that this is where the search box should be, or "quick jump to:" letters tab, like the contacts list itself has (which, btw still works fine). The search box + "tabs" in the contacts list, happens to be the same exact height, as this "mystery blank space". Is that is what is supposed to be here?
If the blank space WAS a search box + tabs, it would be really helpful! And woudl be just as fully functioned as the contacts list itself...
I realize this post reads odd, and if I need to post a picture of my phone I will, but I figure anyone running this rom stock, would see what I mean. (off topic but can anyone reccomend a good way to take a screenshot in the phone?) Thanks in advance!!!
The only time I use my contacts list is to text message somebody, in which case I'm not at my dialer anyways. I guess if I had to tell somebody over the phone somebody's number, I'd use it then. Is that why you need it?
I included a screen capture software.

Thanks for the cap program though it didn't work well. Found a good one from SPB.
I updated my original post with the screen shots. I labeled the space in yellow in question as "empty space"... Any input?
This is the third one I've gotten with the same problem.
I've read through 11 pages of the forum and did a search but no one seems to have my problem.. however everyone I know who has a Sprint Touch Pro has the same issue.
I get a text, I tap the notification on the bottom Touch FLO 3D screen (the text icon with the yellow circle w/ # of txts that are new.)
I view the message.
I tap MENU at the bottom right. I tap reply. Slide open the keyboard, and begin typing the reply and the minute I type any key (sometimes specifically "R") it automatically flips to the call history screen and uses the last letter I typed to find related calls in my call log starting with the letter.
The same also applies if I press "NEW" on the TF3D screen and slide the keyboard open.
It takes whatever I message I was typing and throws it into drafts - which is now full of messages from all the attempts I've made to text and puts me into call history.
I called HTC about this - one person admitted to knowing about the problem but they said there is no fix - the next time I called they knew nothing about it.
This is just one of several issues I have with this phone. There MUST be a fix for this somewhere on here... HELP! ITS DRIVING ME INSANE!

The reason this is happening is simple. When you open the keyboard the cursor is not in the text box where you are going to type. So the moment you hit a key it starts to look up calls matching those letters. So to avoid this just tap into the text box then start typing. I don't know if there is a permanent fix for this so you don't have to tap in the text box.
The reason all of those messages are going into the drafts is really quite simple as well. Windows mobile saves your messages, text or email, which you are creating so that if the screen switches, i.e. a call comes through etc. you don't loose everything you have just typed.
If you do #1 you shouldn't have issues with #2.
Thanks for the reply - but it's not that simple. Half the time the cursor IS in the text box, it allows me to begin typing a message (reply or new) - however half way through the text (maybe the third word in) it throws my message into drafts and begins pulling up items in my call history or contacts.
I've tried "tapping the text box" to place the cursor - that didn't work either. Still does the same thing.
I miss my Mogul.. it never did this. If this can't get fixed I'm moving to the Palm Pre LOL.
I have this same problem
I have this problem too.
It is most annoying to be halfway through a txt or email and suddenly have it start searching through the contacts.
It isn't an issue of the cursor being in the wrong place. It just starts doing it randomly. I did notice less of a problem with it when I flashed a new ROM
My Fuze did this (as does my brother's Touch Pro) all the damn time. When I updated my phone it stopped. I think my brother's Touch Pro still does it quite frequently.
It's is EXTREMELY obnoxious. I tried contacting HTC directly, but they were not helpful. I was able to send probably 1 out of 3 messages without being interrupted.
I like the actual dialer itself, the buttons are nice and big and easy to hit, but there are a few things about it i wish were a bit more intuitive. For one, i believe on my old phone, when you start punching letters/numbers it would tend to pull up the most expected result...so if you call a number a lot that would be above say someone you don't ever call. but this doesn't do that so i am constantly seeing the same random contact at the top when i punch the first FOUR digits for one of my top dials. Which brings my next point, i don't like that you only get one choice to start, my old phone i could see like 4 or so contacts then touch the one in the list from there. on this dialer, i always have to hit the thin bar where it tell how many matches you have, and it's easy to miss that with your finger. I also wish that when you come into the dialer it listed more than just your last single connection.
I may try out something else, any suggestions?

I hate the stock dialer bc it ONLY shows ONE name/number when you start dialing. I'm used to seeing at least 4 names/numbers on that screen. I use GO Dialer instead. It's an ugly shade of blue, but the keypad is transparent translucent, and also goes away when you scroll the list of names/numbers.
I like the stock dialer
I looked at some alternatives but I like the stock one better.
The only gripe I have with the stock dialer is that I can't get it to work in landscape mode. Any one out there know how to get it to rotate automatically. I can't find any settings for it to make it rotate.
the only dialer that i consider very good is the one from MIUI
everything else doesnt compare in my book
Go Dialer is pretty good. First one I actually find acceptable. All of the "Go Dev" apps are quite good, and updated constantly. Plus they actually tell you what they updated, and on what date.

I can't use the stock dialer cause I changed my LCD density (210) and that breaks the stock dialer. Was trying to get used to go dialer but it doesn't transfer numbers from Google maps, ie if I do a search on maps and click the dial button, go dialer comes up blank. That alone was a dealbreaker for me. I use dialer one, very functional, fast, and looks like stock. I also was not a fan of the weird blue shade of go dialer.

I don't mind the stock dialer, I only mind that the stock contacts app doesn't allow you to filter your contacts at least to phone only on the bell version. the contacts tab does that for you (for obvious reasons) but it makes the contacts app useless to me as it shows everyone I have emailed on gmail as a contact.
I use dialer one. Its very good and similar to sense dialer

i was about to post a thread looking for some dialer and contacts app. i gave up on the stock one, so not intuitive. my last phone was windows mobile, and the way you find contacts using the dialer is so much better than the stock android. so i tried Go Dialer and Dialer One as suggested here to test both. any more options out there is appreciated
So I've noticed this issue with a few different ROMs I've flashed (TeslaCoil, Das BAMF, VirusAirborne) that when I open the phone application and begin typing a number it does not automatically begin searching/displaying contacts until I backspace out all of the characters that I've entered. Once the characters have been cleared the usual (recents, favorites, etc) show up. Not sure where this small gap in referencing comes from but was looking to resolve it..
I'm not positive but I think that some of those roms utilize Launcher Pro, and that has been a Launcher Pro bug since the Thunderbolt came out. I am using a stock rom, but since I am using Launcher Pro, the same thing happens to me.
clearly i did a horrible job of searching because it's been remedied thanks to this thread/post:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12670449&postcount=3
'Note: there seems to be a little bug with all 3rd party launchers where if you you hit the phone button and the dialer pops up, the contact list is blank and the smart dial does not work. To remedy this long press phone, select a new application and restart Launcher Pro then add the phone back, you may also have to open up the dialer and try to dial a few numbers and delete them and the contacts should appear. Not really sure why this happens. '
reassigning the phone application shortcut in the launcher pro dock got it up and working.

Yesterday for the first time I got a strange new lock screen I don't remember installing.... When my phone (Nexus 6) is plugged in, and I wake it up, at first I get my regular stock lock screen. But, when I unlock it, this new strange lock screen appears in its place (the first image - which says at the top "0 Words typed today" and "1% beat global users.") When I tap the three-dot menu in the top right, I get the second screen (says "Boost Charge" and gives me option to uncheck.)
Does anyone recognize this? I guess it's possible it's malware of some kind but I am generally pretty careful. It seems like typing stats, but I only have google keyboard, swiftkey and touchpal installed, and none of those seem to be causing this as far as I can tell.
I would like to avoid a factory reset if I can help it, but I don't like the idea of something I didn't choose being on my phone..... Any help as to how this got here?
Same thing happened to me.
Found out it's SwiftKey. Wasn't even using it, so I just uninstalled it.

I've got the exact same thing. Annoying as hell. Don't have SwiftKey installed. Mine I believe is coming from TouchPal.
I got this to stop without uninstalling TouchPal. In TouchPal settings, go into General Settings and disable Daily Summary, which causes another annoying pop-up screen once a day. Then click on Power Boost and disable that. Exit, exit, exit.
I think the Power Boost, um, feature? is causing those random pop-ups.
Hope this helps somebody else. The keyboard itself is pretty good, so I'm sure some people won't want to uninstall it.

Yep, it's TouchPal. I found the Boost Charge one, but hadn't noticed the separate Daily Summary setting-thanks for the heads up.
