Just wanted to know if Dell Streak can play 1080p or 720p Videos or not?
I tried playing mp4/ avi files using Rock Player, they worked with lag, is there any work around?
Have you enabled the hardware acceleration in the build.prop?

I convert them to .mp4's to watch on my Streak.
The Streak is only 800x480 so theres no point trying to play a 1280x720 video.
A converted 720p .mkv file is soooo much better quality than its .avi counterpart.
I use the Touch HD Encoder, a very simple and effective program.
Can I ask what program u guys use to convert the video files?

i use Rock Player from Market to play video files; i try 720p and 1080p mkv movies with subtitles and works perfect 100%, like on computer with hd video card .
there is a great program in the forum called "Encoder" - I have used it to convert videos to mp4 for all my previous phones to play without any lag.
I use arc media player, not come across a file yet that it wont play, everything from avi, to mkv to mp4, in any definition. Great apparently and its free!

I am having issues getting my DVDs converted to digital on my desktop. I was trying to use handbrake, but it always came out funny (jagged sound and large rainbow pixels across the screen). I assume this is some kind of copyright protection.
Right no I am desperate to convert my library to digital back ups that I can toss on and off my devices at will. Any insight on how to solve my problem would be great.
I used Handbrake without any probs - did you choose the best settings? I used Presets Normal, Video Codec Mpeg-4 & Picture Size Custom - I resized using Aspect Ratio.
I followed a couple guides online. I m not even talking about it getting to the phone, it won't even play on the desktop.
So far I ve used these settings:
720x480
264
mp4
EDIT: Just for clarity. Should I be using VLC since Handbrake does not decrypt? (I read this after a google search please inform me if I m wrong).

Hi everyone, is it possible to play 720p (1280×720) movie on X10 smoothly? If so then which program did you guys use to convert and which encode did you use? Because I did try both .mkv and MP4 H.264 encoded and it seems to be lag or super slo-mo alike. Really appreciate with any help from you.

Ya u could download the apk file called rockplayer.apk and install it and throw any file in your memory card and this app will play it smoothly
I did use Rockplayer to play but the result was somewhat unsatisfied. I got lag and slow motion video play

You could try yxplayer, but that's probably going to do the same thing...
So noone suffers the same prob as me? Everyone can play HD video smoothly. Can I ask which codec did you use? I used MP4 H.264 one

Can I ask why you need HD playback on a none HD display? You would not see any difference from a 720p file to a 854X480 file regardless.
The Ironman file I encoded to the proper size plays perfect and I cannot tell the difference from source (720p). Encoded MP4 H.264 with Videora.
I just tried, and in mp4 format, it lags significantly (like it plays between 7-19 fps), but I converted the same file to DivX, picture and sound quality looked exactly the same and it plays perfectly fine at full frame rate.
Well, probably the 2.1 update will bring something to play HD video, since the X10 will be able to record HD video. At lest it is logical.but who knows, maybe we ll record on our X10 the video and watch it on a hd tv. i hope i am wrong.

Yeah. Hopefully you are wrong. That would be stupidity redefined.
Coming back to the playback issue. It's the same thing here. I got the best performance with rock player, which managed to play a couple of hd files.but mostly even rock player is too laggy.

My thoughts exactly. Unless we're able to output and watch these files on our HDTV's, whats the point of needing to watch a 720p file on a 854x480 screen that isn't HD? Makes no sense to me...but to each their own.
I recall reading the update info on SE blogs that we will apart from HDrecording also get wireless video out, i'm guessing we'll need to buy some reciever for our tv's for it to work.

Personally I want to be able to play 720p video on my phone because that's what format the majority of my video is and I'd like to be able to play it without transcoding
That said, If I remember correctly the snapdragon has a hardware video decoder capable of playing 1080p @ 30 fps so it is probably a 1.6 related issue.

My guess is that these video players do not have access to the GPU for hardware acceleration, which would mean the CPU would have to do all the hard work (don't forget, playing HD video IS hard work for any mobile device). Whether that would be an Android 1.6 restriction, I don't know.
anybody looked at the bitrates of these videos?
a bitrate of 8,000 in comparison to a bitrate of let's say 1,000 would make a bit difference... am I wrong?
Also, if you are using the stock CLASS 2 memory card, then playing high bit-rate files will be problematic.
I know that you guys don't want to transcode, but 720p really kills battery.
I haven't tried on my new 16GB class 2 card, but with the 8GB that came with the phone I got smooth playback with 720HD with these settings:

It can take mp4 for sure : I have 2 videos in "/sdcard/video/"
You can try RockPlayer - Plays all divx videos so no need for convert the files at all the player is really great app and you can get it for free from the android market. I watch two movies both more then 2 hours long for a 50% battery so the player is great.
It looks like slideshow with software decoding, it's not works with hardware decoding.
It not play all avi formats well but works great for some if you have time to find out what format works on that phone but i Watch for example Fight Club on this and was nice and smooth also watch some Shows on it and it works great for that it`s very useful when you are at the bus or at the train and have time to kill.
When connected to the computer, download MediaGo from PC companion. It converts audio and video to x8 format, as well as adding it to the device.

yup. just use the media go from SE. it automatic convert the media file to match the hardware decoding. its an extra work but worth doing. to save some memory.

Cannot setup Media Go on my windows 7 x64 corporate. Fail while installing MS Visual C++ 2005 Redistributable package.
I use Avidemux GTK app on Ubuntu. Just use "auto->PSP" settings. it makes files that x8 decodes in hardware.
My favourite video playing app is arcMedia.
It is capable to handle largest video files thanks for video buffering.
But It is not working since I rooted my 2.1 with original rom.
Anybody knows why?
The problem is app2sd. arcMedia doesn't support app2sd yet.

arcMedia plays normal xvid videos smoothly like desktop computers.
My pre-isntalled video player can't find any files, even those which i've recorded with camera. What's the problem?
What's the point of installing video player which can't find video files? for example if some1 buys x8 and don't want to use any of apps from the market, only pre-installed ones. so he can't watch any recorded videos? only getting there through camera app? it's the same with picture review.
Rockplayer v6 vfp version can play video rmvb well, of course, not as well as computer
It all depends on the encoding and the resolution of the files people.
Dont expect to be able to play a full hd avi or mp4 with a 600hz CPU!
Maybe the PSP compatible avi files you can d/l with utorrent work better.

yeah,i would recommend you to convert the videos with Xmedia.(It Supports X8)
Its works everytime on my X8
I use yxplayer2, RockPlayer gives me a lot of erros playing the videos.
I can also say that vital player from market plays divx/xvid with no lag at all, for me it really is the best app of this kind.
to convert videos, try XMedia Recode or Format Factory

there are lots of software players that play almost everything including mov and mpeg
Hi, Ive used RockPlayer quite extensivley and it played nice (even with subtitles) up untill last week when all of a sudden the video lagged awfully. I tried all the other players (yx, qq, arc...) and each and every one of them lags.
Now, Ive updated to the latest x8 software (from the first 2.1 release) and hoped it would help, but playback is the same.
Tried to enable JiT now, but that didnt help.
Any ideas why would something like this happen seemingly out of the blue?
EDIT: I might add that this is all in software mode (even for files that work in hardware mode). Id like software mode to work however because transcoding is kind of a pita job.
EDIT2: Found the culprit. H.264 @300kbps is too much for this phone period. Both xvid and divix play nice even at 1000kbps.
I just picked up my gtablet yesterday and have been spending my time installing tnt lite and installing several apps. I bought it because when I go on trips I wanted something that could browse the net, and play videos. I installed RockPlayer and put a 720p mkv file onto the machine, however playback is very choppy and its almost like the device cannot handle it. I know that several people have gotten 1080p to work good, and I am wondering if there is a setting that needs to be enabled to make 720p work better? I did some digging and saw that someone said to edit a line in the build.prop file (set the media.stagefright.enable from true to false), but I cannot edit my build.prop file. And I am not entirely sure that this will fix the problem. Are 720p videos playable on this machine?
What profile did you render the movies in? Try changing the MKV extension to AVI... Sometimes some renderers treat containers differently even though they are using the same codecs.
just tried to rename the extension from .mkv to .avi and still same choppiness and eventually the videos stops playing all together. I am not sure what rendering is, but the file is encoded AAC 2.0 H264
h264 is not the issue, it's what profile its encoded in
I have this in my FAQ section (in my sig). h264 is supported, but the Tegra 2 cannot handle h264 encoded in high profile. It can handle main profile.
This is confusing to people. So, what I would recommend is to download the excellent "mediainfo" tool (http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en) and it will show you how your videos are encoded.
As for container support, I think MP4 plays a little better than MKV, but Rockplayer (in the Market) seems to be able to handle MKV and using hardware acceleration. Again, as long as it's h264 main profile.
This is not just an issue with the GTab - all the Tegra 2 devices will have this issue as its a limitation of the chipset, or so I've read. Vega, Folio, even the mysterious Adam will probably have this same limitation.

Yeah, that's the tricky part. I haven't been able to figure that out yet, although granted I haven't put much time into it. I think these "profiles" depend on how you encode and which tool you use.
If you try the Tron Legacy trailers, they are 1080p but main profile. A good example of how nice videos can look on it, when encoded the right way.
I have to play around more with something like ffmpeg to see if I can pin this down. Another reason for transcoding is to keep the sizes down, since we have the 4GB FAT32 file size limitation to deal with. Yuk.
I've incoded a 1080p high profile to main. sound was in and out then tryed a few things and lost sound. Video played great anyways.
I guess it depends on the encode. I dl a 720p music video off of youtube, mp4 avc [email protected] (according to mediainfo) and it plays just fine.

Could be a lower screen resolution that full 720p (not all 720p's are alike).
I also read today that Tegra 2 720p should work in high profile, but 1080p definitely does not. But, Android itself might be limiting even 720p, so it's a crap shoot.
Just out of curiosity why do you guys want those big files on here anyway? Is it to output to a TV? I wouldn't think you would need such a high quality file to watch stuff on the G tab.

It's not about storing large files on the gtab...its more about having video portability. I keep my movies and videos on a server that I stream from my living room and bedroom. It would be ideal if I can play files on any device without having to reencode the video.
I did test 1080p files from YouTube and they did not play (high profile).
Ok, makes sense. I do the same thing using upnplay and my server. Thought you were wanting them on the tablet.

A two hour 720p movie runs ~4GB, so it's close to the limit in FAT32. And you could easily go over the limit when encoding, which would require you to break the file up. Annoying.
The problem here is that none of the vendors want to agree on a replacement file system for portable devices (wow, no surprise there). MS wants exFAT, the open source community would prefer EXT3/4, and I assume Apple would prefer HFS+.

Can't speak for everybody else, but for me I'd want to just use the video files I broadcatch from the NNTP groups. Ideally, I wouldn't want to have to reencode video to watch it, just access it directly from my media server. Standard definition avis work okay, but eventually these will not be offered and of course the HD versions look way better. Over the years it's been harder to come by a regular source of SD resolution TV Series feeds. The 720P encoded files quality are noticeable versus SD even on this smaller screen. Ideally we would get high profile 720P MKV at least to work as it seems this is what the guys doing NNTP TV Series seem to be encoding in.
What I would see happening is that a video player on the GTablet will access the files off the media server and stream, not play files directly off the local Internal SD. Regardless of where the file resides, it looks like it needs to be refined to play these files more fluidly.
I'm not saying this will be the only nor primary method of viewing video files, but having the flexibility and option is always nice. Especially when all the tvs are watching something else. ;P

Can you please share how you are thinking about doing that using movies/pictures/videos on Windows Media Center share or NFS mount.
I tried very same thing as some of my movies still in vob format or mpeg2 (home recordings of kids), tv recordings using microsoft format or streaming pics, and nothing seems to work. I was able to use upnpplay (android program in the market place) to browse my stuff on the shared drive, but can't play mpeg2, vob or other format.
does anyone know what's the best way to do this?
G Tab supports H.264 1080p main and high profiles
Detailed specs on what Audio and Video formats G Tablet supports are listed in the manual downloadable from the Viewsonic web site.
But in a few words - it does support up to 1080p, both baseline, high, and main profiles for H.264 with certain limitations for each, and MPEG4 simple profile.

My entire system is redundant. I have my windows 7 share as well as my htpc/nas running tversity, orb and audiogalaxy (music only). Everything is shared in every way. First I try just streaming the file through Windows 7 dlna, which generally works fine. I too use Upnplay. If something doesn't work (very rare) I move to looking for it through Tversity which attempts to detect the dlna device and scale it so it works. I've never needed to use Orb on the GTab since I really got everything up and running, Orb is for when I actually am on the road and want to watch sth. from my home network. PlayOn may actually work as well - it has a free mode which allows you to use it to share files on the local network using VLC codecs.

I'd like to add to this conversation with, I hope, clarification of how to get higher definition video playback working on the GTab.
I've tried four video files that are 720P or 1080P. None of them works well in Movies, DoubleTwist, Rockplayer, or VitalPlayer.
G Tablet, TnT 4.21, OE kernel. Market fix. Various apps.
Videos all playing from /SDCARD

Are all of these simply too much for me to get away with playing on the GTab? I've played most, if not all of these, using a Broadcom 70012 Crystal HD decoder card on a Dell Mini 9 (Atom N270) with few problems.

My Atrix doesn't seem to be able to play any of my .mkv video files. Is anyone else having this problem? My captivate worked fine with the exact same movies. I have also tried downloading other video players such as rockplayer, mVideoPlayer and doubletwist but I am getting the same "sorry, this video cannot be played" or "file cannot be displayed or played" message.
i have also tried the copying the videos to both my external sd card and my internal memory, no luck.
The captivate seemed to support a lot of video formats with out resizing ....what does the atrix support

mp4s work for me, but not mkvs with the same settings. Tegra 2 only supports baseline H264.
The Atrix only supports (3GPP) .3gp and MPEG-4) .mp4 video formats.
Codec support is for H.263, H.264 AVC, MPEG-4 SP and VP8
So far I haven't gotten the phone to play any of its said supported videos. I too had the captivate and am now very disappointed in the Atrix codec support. Maybe we were spoiled with the captivate?
Only AVI's play. Nothing else. Hopefully this will be remedied by Moto before anyone else.

That's because mostly any MPeg4 or H.264 video you try to play is high-profile. The Tegra 2 apparently only supports the baseline codec.
so are there any downloads out there that would supply the necessary codecs, or maybe another player (i'v already tried 5). i thought i got away from having to convert all of my videos when i got rid of my iphone
What pisses me off is I cannot even use DLNA to stream video to my phone since NOTHING is compatible.
I'm able to stream from my DVR and my Windows Media systems to any PC or DLNA equipped device in my house except for my Atrix.
The list of things that I like about this phone are slowly being overpowered by the list of crap that I should have to be dealing with.
This is supposed to be the "most powerful smartphone" on the market.
My 3 year old 3GS does more with less hacking.
And yeah... I threw up a little in my mouth when I said that as I hate having to hack my phone to get basic functionality.

Doesn't work with DirecTV DVR's.
I have the whole home service so I can play any movie on any TV or PC in my house.
Any DLNA equipped device works too... except for the Atrix of course.
I was able to play a 700+ MB avi file.
I was able to play tron in 264 mkv fine here.

mkv is a container, h264 is a codec
almost all phones can decode h264, xvid, divx, x264, etc, BUT in MP4 container.
just remux your files without recompress, its very quickly, just a few seconds using some program like YAMB or staxrip's just mux option.
if I have an avi file compressed with xvid my x10 can not play it with hardware decoders, but if I mux this avi in an mp4 file my x10 can play it very smooth, and remux its just take a half minute.

btw, if you want test, put any HD youtube video (MP4 high profile, wich is playable on atrix) and remux into MKV without recompress, I mean just mux, and try to play on atrix.

almost all phones can decode h264, xvid, divx, x264, etc, BUT in MP4 container.
just remux your files without recompress, its very quickly, just a few seconds using some program like YAMB or staxrip's just mux option.
if I have an avi file compressed with xvid my x10 can not play it with hardware decoders, but if I mux this avi in an mp4 file my x10 can play it very smooth, and remux its just take a half minute.

btw, if you want test, put any HD youtube video (MP4 high profile, wich is playable on atrix) and remux into MKV without recompress, I mean just mux, and try to play on atrix.

I'd like to see some proof that high profile plays on the atrix currently. Main profile with tweaking plays choppy, but high profile in my experience does not work at all. Also as a clarification, x264 is a fully functional h264 encoder, and can be used to create bluray quality video
There are a few video containers supported by the player shipped with the atrix.
*.avi
*.mp4
*.3gp
Having said those, the codecs that can be inside an AVI file are as follows:
Video: xvid/divx (h.263)... owait noone cares about the other ones. At any res 1080p and lower resized to MOD16
Audio: mp3... again noone cares about the other ones
Inside the MP4 you can have the following:
Video: xvid/divx/h263/h264 (in BASELINE or HIGHLY MODIFIED MAIN profiles only) at any res 1080p and lower resized to MOD16
Audio: AAC (LC or HC; avoid multichannel as it creates an annoying echo) /AMR
*.3gp is the format that a lot of current handheld devices can capture in. They have their own specific codecs depending on the device, but video that I captured with my old sony ericsson s710a plays flawlessly on all my newer devices.
As for MKV... I wish it supported it. I started using QQplayer for MKV with very low bitrate xvid/mp3 combos for subtitles and they play OK, just not well. Settings I have found that work well with QQplayer and xvid for MKV is any flavor of 480p mod16 resized @~1500kb/s, and mp3 of an ABR of 112 downsampled to 44.1khz. h264 inside mkv though... not happening.
Care to explian where's the "mux" option in the program you linked?
I know a lot of you are thinking this has been addressed before but my problem isn't getting the video to play in entertainment center mode but the audio.....
But the thing is that it will only play sound in video's i recorded with my camera.
What im trying to do is play videos that i have taken from my computer and put them onto my ext sd card.
So like i say the video is just fine but it will not play back with audio.
Oh and they are avi and mpeg formats
Any ideas guys and gals?
The Tegra 2 seems to have crappy video/audio codec support. The samsung processor in the captivate I had previously played everything I could throw at it.
Thankfully, the T2 is powerful enough to do some software decoding. Try using various video players. I find that MoboPlayer can run all my HD videos so far.
Also, just because a file is .Divx, .AVI, .mkv.... doesn't mean that it will play. As far as I know, there are different encoding formats and levels for each codec. The T2 seems to be okay with any basic file, but none of the highly processed files such as movie mkv's.
If you try download another programe in market you would can see
But we can't do the dane for media center....so the better you can do for now is convert your vídeo tio an old codec

I've been using Handbrake and the settings from here:

The only difference is that I like to click the "keep aspect ratio" button in handbrake for the resolution. Tweak as you like, but I've found that if you use the constant quality setting, A/V gets out of sync. Biggest bummer is that I have to encode specifically for the Atrix...can't seem to use my "advanced encoded" videos from my media server. I have taken previously encoded 1080p HD movies back though handbrake with the referenced settings to the Atrix and they play beautifully both in MoboPlayer and the Entertainment Center.
