I know many have gone on saying, oh I hard bricked my phone, etc, but turns out it was soft bricked. So let me say, I've soft bricked my phone many times and recovered it using Odin trying out different ROMs.
So what happened tonight is I was using my phone, browsing the internet when it locked up, screen stayed on, no response. - Sure, no prob, just restart, it's happened before. I held down the power button and shut it off. But now it won't turn on again. Battery is fine, I tried it in another phone and swapped the other phone's battery into this one.
Plugging in a charger doesn't do anything. I can't check Odin, cause it there is absolutely no response from plugging it in, removing battery, plugging it in again, holding down power buttons while plugging in and inserting battery, etc. I've tried many ways of getting it to power up, nothing seems to be happening.
I was running Bionix 1.1, with no problems for a couple months, so I really don't think the ROM did anything to it. Think my hardware just took a dive? It's really strange, and I'm sad. This phone is just about to hit 6 months old.
Do you guys have any other ideas of something I could try? Maybe I'll even open it up and take a multimeter to it to see if power is at least going through the phone.
Help!
Thanks.
Hmmm... Maybe Try the jig and see if it responds (check the sticky on that)
If not, Then check with a multi-meter and check continuity check the usb, check if there is voltage passing through battery contact (continuity). this all fails, then i would dis-assemble and check components,
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=908211
here is a link on how to do that. The nice thing is you can check easier when all assembled. Also, If you do figure it is a component then Globaldirect.com does sell the pieces so you can replace.
Not much help but without really seeing the phone it is just guess work (and even seeing the phone it usually is guesswork as well )
Thanks Oka1.
I don't think the Jig is going to help in my situation. I'm not having an issue getting into Download mode. The phone won't power on at all. If I saw an image on the screen at all, I'll feel alot more confident. But nothing at all is showing.
I'll figure something out. I'll probably call up Samsung when I get to work tomorrow and pull the phone apart.
Thanks.

I've been in this spot before. Try, pull the battery, plug in the phone, hold the three buttons and at the same time push the battery back in. Should do the trick. It's been a long time since i've had to do it but I think those are the steps.
pull the battery and only hold down the volume keys, plug the usb in and put the battery back in...download mode..
Well... it's working again.
I did nothing other than pulled battery, sim, memory card and left it all apart overnight. I don't know what this causes, but after 8 hours, I put it back together again and it started working.
I had tried this over a 3 hour period before going to sleep and it hadn't worked, but somehow overnight worked..... sooooooooooo strange!
But thanks so much for the suggestion guys!

Alright so a friend of mine wanted me to upgrade his phone for him to the new radio and all that stuff.
I tried run the official installer but I got an error that the battery wasn't at least 50 percent.
I left it charging overnight, came this morning to see a red light on the device. It won't power on at all. If it's plugged into the USB on my XP system, windows finds a new "Data Interface" device.
Tried doin the resets with holding the camera and power button and all that with no luck.
I've flashed both my phone and my girlfriend's in the past without anything like this going on.. obviously since I didn't get any kind of flash actualy going, I don't think that had anything to do with it.
Anyone know what do with a phone in this condition?
Also, my friend hadn't activated his sprint phone yet, he got the phone brand new from ebay, and had it for about a month or so, but had an overdue sprint bill he had to pay before he could activate it.. so if he took it to the store would they replace it there for him even if it was never activated?
Thanks for any help.

Is that just hitting the reset button? If so, I've tried that but it does nothing.. also tried that while holding the camera and power buttons but that does nothing as well.
If you're talking about something else, then please let me know.
Thanks.
Sorry for the double post, but I should also add that I put his battery into my phone and it works fine and shows 100% charge.
couple things here for debugging purposes.
Check your battery against your friend's for signs of abnormality. (especially leaks/contacts).
If all looks fine and it still doesnt work with your battery, you can try flashing with his battery (though that doesnt make much sense, but try it anyway just in case).
Since you say your phone works with his battery and not yours, it would lead one to assume you have a bad battery, though, you know what they say about assume, it makes an ass of u and me. ha. Anyway, try that and post results.
EDIT: See what happens when you put your battery in his phone, post results.

Thanks for the reply.
Both batteries will work in my phone just fine and both show a full charge. Neither battery will work in his phone, and neither will power up the device.
Both show only the red light when plugged in.
Any ideas?
Ah, i read it slightly backwards. Sorry.
Ok, so when you put a battery in his phone a red light comes on and a blank screen? No noises or any type of error message? Check the contacts on the back of his phone and make sure they're nice and clean, Check the back of yours against his, I think these phones have that open port on them (i dont feel like actually taking mine apart to be sure), and make sure those aren't "shorted" out by anything. If everything looks perfect compared to yours, I'd say your best bet is the phone is broken. (assuming you've tried getting it into bootloader with no luck, softresting and hard resetting with no luck). Let me know what you find under the batteries.
When I have the battery only inside the device, it does nothing, no red light, no screen, nothing whatsoever no matter what I press.
When i plug it in, it does nothing as well, but if I hit the reset button, the red light comes on and stays on until I unplug it. If it's plugged into a USB port, windows detects "Data Interface" but finds no drivers.
I checked the contacts, they look pretty much the same as mine, no signs of corrosion or anything.
that's very odd.
We've ruled out the battery at least. (send me the spare, just kiddin).
When looking under the battery there isn't a little hole for a factory reset is there? (i havent looked under my battery since i got the thing).
If not, that sucks. If there is, push it and see if anything happens.
Otherwise, I can't think of much else aside from a broken phone. Defect of some sort perhaps. I'm going to browse my manual real fast to see if it says anything about a red light, i'll edit this post if i find anything.
Try installing different bootloaders on there to see if anything happens. Also, try the exit-bootloader program to see if that helps. I'm not sure but when my phone has a redlight, it usually means that something is wrong. If all else fails, make that dreadful call to Sprint's technical support. Their customer service is a joke but their technical support can be very helpful.
i cant find anything in my book about a red light. I would probably give Tech Support a call (and tell them to send me their book) and see if they know what it is.
But as the guy above said, try different bootloaders see if you can get anything at all.
have u tired your battery onto his phone or try to see if your computer picks up anything expect data device
I had this happen once, Try this...
1. Remove the battery.
2. Plug in wall charger.
3. Power the device. (this may not do anything)
4. Install battery and wait for yellow light.
5. Press reset button on bottom of phone.
If you still get a red light and no power after that, I would guess that the phone is defective.
X2K
Sorry to say, but the phone is bricked...good luck having sprint replace a phone that was bought on ebay.

hi, im having the same exact problem.. was there ever a fix for it?
thanks in advance
anyone? please helppp!! i just got this phone :[
ive had this happen twice since i got the phone. it happens right when i plug it into the charger, screen goes black and red light comes on. i found that taking out the battery for a little over 10 minutes while off the charger and it will come back on. havent had this happen since i got a replacement though.
Three days after I bought mine, this happened. Had done nothing with it (no third party software, nor rom changes). The tech said to let it sit on the charger over night, which did nothing. They replaced it for being DEFECTIVE.
Slack in my duties but not forgotten
Greetings all,
The symptoms described here are the classic where the bootloader has become corrupt. I am still working on it and have not given up, just had lots on the plate.
Well back again with new problem.
Have just had my phone back after it was repaired only a week ago by samsung; they repaired the software, replaced screen, battery and USB port. Now my unrooted phone, with only usual apps, has again failed on me. Was on the home screen, nothing else running, and it turned itself of. After a minute turned itself back on, held at the Logo, and then turned of again. Now it wont turn on what so ever. Its not got hot, its not got cold, its not been in a room with steam, its been sat in a decent zenus case, in a house with radiators etc on.
I seem rather unlucky with phones, my old Nokia 5800 went into repair 6 times, until I gave up and brought a £10 phone, that I'm having to use again now.
I have tried charging, despite the fact it was still 62% full when the phone went of. I don't do extreme sports with the thing, I barely use the phone, yet it still keeps breaking. Disappointed, because the phones pretty decent, but starting to feel like I don't do well with them.
Rant over.
Update: Just tried after 30 minutes to turn it on. It turned on for about 15 seconds, got into the unlock screen, unlocked, went to the menu screen and it turned itself of. I put the charger straight in, was charged up to 59% anyway, but thought maybe might be battery... But doesn't seem to be.
Wont turn on/Charge again. The phone is fine temp.
What you're describing could be a phone with a drained battery.
So check the battery with a voltmeter and check the charger. One (or both if you're really unlucky) of them could be busted.
Edit: You can check the charger by plugging your phone to your PC and charging it from there. If it works then it's the charger if it doesn't then check the battery.
Is all else fails return the phone to a service center.
Try this-
Take out the battery, then press and hold the ON button for 7-10 seconds (the longer the better). Reinsert the battery, then press ON button to start it. This is a soft reset, and wipes the temporary memory and empties all remaining power in the circuits. This helps on many phones and even laptops that won't start properly or show anything on screen.
If this does not work, try the next step. Again, do as above. But after inserting the battery, do not turn the phone on, but press and hold the ON button and the HOME button at the same time for 7-10 seconds. This is a hard reset, and works best if done after a soft reset. Just be sure the battery has at least some juice in it and isn't empty. If possible, try with another battery if this does not work.
I read earlier about a similar problem and it turned out to be a loose fitting battery. They put some foam or something at the bottom of the battery so that it would stay tight and retain contact.
You could probably test for this by removing the back cover and pushing the battery upwards while powering on.

Awesome Advice
Thanks MichaelAmrs
I have had some serious trouble with my GS2 not working and the latest has been it not turning on. I stuck my battery in the freezer and then did what you suggested and it worked like a charm. Instead of getting it to boot I tried putting it in Download mode and was able to install the Stock ROM on it and hopefully now it will last. But if nothing else at least it is turning on again.
Good luck.
Hey everyone,
So I finally got my new (used eBay special) Rezound working with Amon Ra installed and CM9 unofficial. I was up til around 5 AM this morning futzing with it until I finally got it going with help from lolatvincent and others. Now I have another problem - though this problem existed before, too, but I am as yet unable to resolve it. (I've tried searching this forum using plenty of terms as well as Google to no avail.)
Here's my other thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2151474
When I try to turn the phone on with the battery cover on, it won't power on. If I plug my phone into my USB port before I attempt to power it on, then press the power button, Windows makes its "device detected" sound, so clearly SOMETHING happens, but it goes away immediately and it won't happen again until I pull the cover off. Fastboot and ADB commands simply don't work with the cover on, so it seems that it does shut itself off again right after that power on attempt.
Further, if I have the phone booted and powered on, when I put the cover on, it just turns the phone right off as if you pulled out the battery.
This happens regardless of whether or not the SIM card (unactivated as yet - the phone hasn't been activated on my account) is in, and I've checked the typical CDMA/LTE settings and set them correctly, so it's not that issue.
I am waiting on a new battery for it, and I think I might try to order a new battery cover, but I want to know if this issue is going to go away or not before I spring the money for it. Any advice is appreciated. Thank you!
Tonight I was coming out of the casino, I didnt win so I cant buy a new phone... Anyway, I noticed my 3g wasnt on, so I decided to power off then on, bc thats what I would normally do to get the 3g to work. So I hold the power button and the power options come up, normally I would hit power off, however, here I decided to press reboot. The phone made its normal power off sounds and then it was off, However, I noticed the led light on the left of the earpiece speaker lite up light blue. So I held the power button and the device never booted back up. I then did a battery pull, 1min later put it back in and still nothing. No recovery mode, download mode, connection to the pc, NOTHING...Does anyone have any advice,
It did not get wet, or dropped, or anything else thats device threatening... Im stumped, Its a I545 flashed to cricket, running 4.2.2 me7 bootstrapped 3.62, running cleanrom 1.6 incase the info will help... THANX IN ADVANCE TO ANY HELP...
please help me
Im really lost for words here. Everything checks out, and the battery is good, I ran a volt test on it, besides I have a second battery and problem is still current. Im trying to find out what besides the battery would cause the s4 not to power up, Circuit board wise, I have it apart and I dont see any problems. I could really use a hand, I have to run to work, be down at 9pm... I hope someone can lend a halping hand... Thanx
I have no insight as to why this happened to you but unfortunately you may just have to use your insurance and get another one, or have a service center check into it. It seems like you're pretty good with troubleshooting this... Not sure what else to say

So I have a STOCK (no nothing) Verizon Galaxy S4 that is/was up to date as of 6/23/14. I think the last OTA push was a month or so ago.
A few days ago the device rebooted on its own a few times and I had no clue what was going on, but it stabilized for a day or so. Then yesterday it shut off and would not turn back on - the battery level was at least 80%. I removed the battery and reinserted it. I did not press the power button, but the device vibrates and displays the initial boot screen for about 3 seconds before it powers back off. At least I assume it is powered off - the screen goes black and there is no sign of life. The buttons do nothing to stir its slumber. I can remove and reinsert the battery for the same results.
I've tried POWER+HOME+VOLUME UP once inserting the battery - the blue text appears at the top but again the device shuts off after about 3 seconds.
Charger plugged in shows no light. However, when plugged in, the top part of the device does becomes warm on the screen and on the back with the cover off. - It actually becomes quite warm so I removed the battery but kept it plugged in just to test and it remained very warm. Unplugged now. Also it appears that inserting the battery does nothing now - maybe it's drained.
I'm pretty certain it's a hardware problem at this point, but I have no clue where to start. Has anyone ever had this issue or come across someone that has? I can take the device apart - does anyone know where and what I should be looking for as far as a loose connection or damaged component goes? Is there an electrical component diagram out there somewhere?
Any help is much appreciated!!
Have you tried getting into download mode at all?! I know you say that it won't go into stock recovery... But if somehow it got bricked then recovery corrupt be borked as well. Least if you can get into download mode you could try a no wipe image....
Also could just be hardware related in such case I don't have experience with that so much..

Yes. Same deal - it comes up for about 3 seconds... Must be a hardware issue.

It is and I agree. Just hoping someone on here might've seen this before and know how to fix it. I may try replacing the charging port hardware to see if that solves it.

To boot into recovery you only need to hold the VOL UP+POWER. Once the phone vibrates let go of power but keep holding the up button. I let go once the blue text appears for about 2 seconds.

If you can't get into download mode only option left is jtag
If you don't have a warranty there are places that will jtag it. I would recommend using someone that has done it before but I would be happy to try if you want to send it to me. I have the equipment but have yet to use it. I had a hard brick and thought I was going to have to try and Jtag mine but the warranty company decided they would go ahead and replace it. Like any place else, there would be no guarantee it will work. Of course if it is a hardware issue, jtag wouldn't work.
Some repair places will test it for free. I took one in for a sound problem and wanted to check out the loud speaker. The loud speaker was fine and they didn't charge me anything.

Okay thanks! Yea, I'll see if I can figure out if it's a hardware problem or not. If not, then I may take you up on your offer.
