if that doesn't work...
From here.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=848737
1. Get into Download Mode (WITH THE PHONE PLUGGED IN) by following the steps below
*Turn off the phone until you get to the charging battery screen (keep in mind, your phone is currently PLUGGED IN)
*Press volume up and down, and power all at once.
*As soon as the screen turns black, release your power button.
2. Unplug phone from USB
3. Open Odin (in Administrator if you're running W7 or Vista), try one of the ones I attached to this post, at least one of them is bound to work, some don't work for me, but works for others, some doesn't work for others, but works for me, whatever floats your boat
4. Load in the files into Odin that you have downloaded from above Just load in the files corresponding to the text field.
DO NOT CHECK REPARTITION.
5. Plug in your phone with the DL mode
6. Click start and wait for the magic

Try my how-to...
Also, try pulling the battery, and then holding the Vol up+Vol dn keys, plug the usb cable in, then plug the battery back in..., make sure the usb cable is plugged into your computer...
Or.., if your phone is partially booting, then:
Code:
adb reboot download
i cant "power off" phone cause i cant boot android

Wait for the Vibrant screen to reboot again...

i think i have a hardware locked phone, i just got it today.
But i can get into recovery mode via hardware, so maybe i dont have hardware locked? and it IS possible to get to download mode on my phone via the buttons right?

If you follow the steps your phone will enter download mode, In order for your PC to recognize what kind of device is plugged into it you need the samsung drivers. Which are here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=728929
But im stuck on vibrant screen no OS is loaded

yes, so is that fixable?
Yeah definitely fixable, You just need to install the Samsung drivers onto your PC. Use Odin to flash a stock ROM onto your device and things should be better for you. I would suggest doing some research here on XDAand getting familiar with flashing a phone. Ive recovered from where you are now(a long time ago) this phone is very resilient. I have a thread over in the Q&A section with links to a video tutorial that I made for flashing a phone from stock, rooting, then all the way up to nero. Do a search on it, Good luck!
i just need to get into need to get into download mode and get odin to recongnize my phone and i should be good, it's such a pain! ;(. But THANKS for your help! I wish theres just ONE way to get into download mode.

Well, after spending almost 11 hours trying to boot into recovery or download, I know for sure that there is something going on with my phone re: hardware locked. The date on my box is 7-16. It is an early Vibrant. But no matter what I do, I cannot get into download or recovery which means my ****ing phone is literally worthless.
I have tried all possible thousands of combination's of buttons, batteries, and cords while booting and nothing happens.
The Vibrant logo shows, then it shows the pink, annoying as hell T-mobile logo, than goes to the Galaxy S logo which loads for a little bit and then just leads me to a black screen. Eventually the 4 buttons on the front of the phone turn on and then nothing else happens. It will just sit like this forever.
I know all I need to do is get a working ROM loaded but it is literally impossible to do so.
Can anyone offer any suggestions? Or are anyone else having the same problem?
I guess the only way I can get a working phone is to get in touch with T-mobile and do a Warranty exchange. That's a damn shame too, because I will be without a working phone for a week.
What about using adb?
adb reboot recovery -or- adb reboot download ?
I had a hw locked vibrant, never tried the adb reboot download, recovery did work.. I added another line on my account last night for somone, who got a vibrant, theirs wasn't hw locked, so I traded 'em ;P
Agree with the above poster I have been stuck on the vibrant screen or dark screen and adb still worked to save me
when i try to use adb, it just tells me that it cant find the device. i'm not able to boot into android OS at all.... screen just hangs. so my computer is never getting a chance to see my phone hence why i cant use adb to reboot it into recovery or download.
I believe your device has to go into recovery mode then check with and devices and if you see a device I THINK it is and reboot download, I am 90% certain

i do believe i have the correct drivers installed. i was able to use adb to run lagfixes before i was having this problem. when i boot my phone, i get a sound from my computer saying that it recognizes a usb device. the two drives in the vibrant show up in My Computer but i cannot access them as windows says they are not accessable at the moment.
at what point will adb be able to recognize my phone when booting? no matter what i do when i try adb shell i get error: device not found
It could be the phone not bring in debugging mode, either because it's been turned off or the os isn't getting far enough to turn it on. I think I've been able to get adb to recognize my phone even while it was booting up (at the white vibrant screen). Maybe you can try adb then?
Same problem here. I probably just have to sell it fast on ebay or something. Hopefully some kind of fix starts by the end of the week. First phone in my smartphone life to brick from a simple Voodoo lag fix. Please XDA gods find a solution.

nope, no go. adb will not recognize my device no matter what. and the device isnt loading the OS so i cannot turn debugging on. i guess this is a real "brick" then.

I just fixed this on my phone. Your phone will go into download mode. Plug the phone in and wait for the battery symbol to fully load. Hold Vol + and _ and PWR until it goes black, then release the PWR button only. It will go into DL mode. Fire up Odin, and flash the "Froyo that does not brick" ROM. It will boot into the i9000 recovery mode and give you an error. Hold the Vol + and - and PWR again and release PWR when the phone goes black. It will go into DL mode again. Now with Odin, flash the factory firmware, making sure to click re-partition this time. After the phone reboots, it will fire right up into the factory ROM.

this is exactly the method i want to try. but unfortunately i cannot get the phone into recovery or download mode. i have tried at least 100 times now with many different combination's of plugging the usb cord in and pressing the volume and power buttons.
two ideas: one, is it possible that i wiped recovery and download mode from my phone on accident? the reason why i ask is that i was super tired and flashing roms and kernels to my phone. i flashed back to my original stock rom and then i flashed the kernel. for some reason, i selected wipe date/cache in Rom Manager before flashing the kernel. i have no idea why i did this. seriously. totally noob move. so im assuming i have a kernel flashed but now there is no ROM installed for the phone to boot into.
two, if above is not the issue, than im going to assume that the phone is not recognizing any button presses while its off, so when i turn it on it just recognizes that the power was pressed and ignores the volume presses, thus not booting the phone into recovery or download.
edit: i should mention again that at no time does adb recognize my device. so i cannot use adb to reboot the phone into the mode i need.
just a comment for the OP - the vibrant isnt worthless, it is something that YOU did to get the phone into its current state. So dont blame the phone for something that it didnt do on its own.

I understand what you mean. I appreciate your criticism of my original post. Let me say that I wrote it while frustrated. But I know that isn't an excuse.
The device is fantastic. I know that I did this to it myself. It's unfortunate.
Anyways, I received a replacement phone. I will be more careful this time.

Can you get adb to work?
I had the same thing happen earlier, I was flashing back a stock ROM in Odin, which I have done before, and this time it was doing the cache files and the phone went black and removed from Odin, now this PC-Computer icon is up. Holding down the power-button just blanks for a second then puts back to the phone-pc screen, my phone was hardware locked so the power+volumes does nothing, and the computer won't recognize the phone in adb.

Download Mode trick.. it worked for me.
Ok guys! here you go.... If you feel like you semi-bricked your phone and cannot boot into download mode.. there is a trick that might work for some or it might not doesn't hurt to try, but damn sure worked for me... Make sure phone is connected to computer with ODIN Opened,..
1. Unplug your phone from usb
2. Take out battery (and mini sd and sim)
3. Plug usb back into phone.
4. Hold down up and down volume keys while putting battery back into the phone. IT SHOULD BOOT INTO DOWNLOAD MODE. if not sorry. Sometimes when people flash back and forth the up and down volume keys get reversed... so try volume down and power.. or volume up and power. GOOD LUCK!!!

No luck, currently going through a relentless trial-error process of different usb-battery-sim/sd-volume-power buttons. Just found out insurance which I thought was covered on my phone via Asurion through T-Mobile is only covering one of the phones on my line, yet I bought them both with warranties at the same time... Pretty bummed, Only is looking like paying the deductable fee for a new phone as if lost/stolen.. Hope something pulls through.
Just a small deviation
1. Take out the battery
2. Plug the USB into the phone
3. Plug USB into the PC
4. Hold down the Volume up/down + Power button with one hand
5. Put the battery back in with the other hand
6. Wait for the phone2pc icon to flash 2 times and on the second time when the screen goes black release only the POWER BUTTON
7. When you see the digging Android you can let go of the Volume buttons
That is the only way I could get it to work
I tried to upgrade to the 2.2 operating system using a guide on android forums.
I originally had a rooted 2.1 OS, I don't know if I unplugged it before the process was complete or if I had to return to a stock OS prior to upgrading; however now I cannot get to download mode to use Odin again.
I have read through some threads and I have a different case, I am not stuck at the Vibrant screen, I get past it. Upon boot up I get the Galaxy S screen followed by an Android System Recovery <3e> screen with some other texts. If I hold the power button, I will get the "Power Reset or Unknown Upload Mode" screen. If I continue to hold the power button, the phone will cycle between those three modes, the Galaxy S screen, the Android System Recovery screen, and the unknown upload mode screen.
I have and am still trying different key combinations to get back to recovery mode in attempts to reload the stock OS and then continue with the 2.2 upgrade.
I have made a video that I will post when I get home later today; any help will be appreciated.
Thanks.

I am no expert by any means but perhaps the following might be of help:
try selecting reinstall packages when the stock recovery screen comes up, this may allow you to access CWM Recovery.
also try-- set up odin on Pc and plug in usb cable to Pc ONLY. Then with power off and phone not connected to Pc hold down both volume up and volume down and plug the usb in FROM computer this should take you to Download mode.
Try to reboot your phone with adb.
To get into download mode do this:
remove battery
replace battery
Hold both volume keys.
plug in USB
at no time touch the power button.
Takes me into download mode every time!

Holy crap... I'm so glad I found these instructions. Worked like a charm. Key instruction was to hold down both volume keys and THEN plugging it in. BEAUTIFUL!
I know many different threads are already available on this topic, but I think mine is severe. Obviously my Vibrant is bricked, and yes, I have done many different things to attempt to fix it.
If I am missing anything, please let me know.
=====================================================
-The phone is not recognized whatsoever by USB on an apple computer or any variety of windows computers, rendering any advice using Odin and ADB useless.
-The phone will not go past the vibrant screen, but makes the sound like it is attempting to the Galaxy S animation. However, it never displays this animation.
-The phone can enter recovery mode, but not download mode.
-I have tried clearing all data and I have also tried "Reinstalling packages", but it does not do anything.
-The phone will not go into download mode by connecting it to the PC (XP 32 bit) while holding vol. up and down at the same time.
-When the phone is plugged into the wall, the battery charge image displays on the screen, but any combination of buttons do not work.
-I have all current Samsung drivers, as well as the Kies software on my computer.
=====================================================
I think I should make or purchase the "USB Dongle" which allows the phone to go into download mode via Hardware.
Is there anything else I can do?
Thank you for any and all help.
You are still ok
1) power phone down
2) pull battery out
3) hold volume up + down
4) while holding Volume up + down , put battery back in
5) still holding volume up + down plug usb cable into the phone
Option2:
Power off, hold vol+ and vol-, plug in USB.

Ok, So i'm having a heaping pile of rooting problems. Brand new phone. Installed and updated Kies on my computer.
First problem: can't enter download mode without having usb plugged in. Volume down+power and volume up+ power just turns the phone on again. volume up+ volume down+ power enters 3e recovery. If I hold both volume buttons and plug the usb in, then it goes to the "press volume up to enter download mode" screen and that's the only way i can do it.
Second Problem: perhaps due to the fact that i have to plug in my usb in order to get to usb mode, superone click and odin don't recognize my phone. When i open those programs it doesn't show "[0:COM8]" (or something similar) like it should.
Third Problem: many methods for rooting I have found want me to use Odin 1.x (usually odin3 v1.85) I have windows 7 prompt me for permission to use that program. Then, I get a small dialogue box that says "Odin3" followed by several characters in what appears to be japanese. The only option on that box is "ok" and when you press that the box goes away and odin never opens...
I have not found a root method that doesn't run headlong into one or more of those issues. Any help would be great, I have no idea why this is so difficult.

The only option on that box is "ok" and when you press that the box goes away and odin never opens...

for one. you have to plug usb in to get into download mode.
for two. you have to hold volume up and volume down, then plug the usb in to get into download mode.
exactly, but then my phone isn't recognized in odin or anything else for that matter. And i have seen numerous instructions for this phone that tell you to enter download mode with Volume down+ power alone...

That should take care of the driver issue, but it's still possible (an outside chance) you will have to uninstall and reinstall the usb driver.

You are trying to use the I9100 key combinations. The one that works for you is the only one that works on the I777.

Could be a driver problem or is could be a faulty connection of your usb port or cable. Try a different usb port, try a different cable.

Odin3 v1.85 work fine on Windows 7. But you don't need Odin3 v1.85 if you are using the One-click Downloader executable, which is also an Odin. If you want to use Odin3 v1.85, delete the one you have and redownload it.

Once you get Odin to recognize your phone, you will be fine.

Not familiar with it, but those may be for I9100. Download mode on I777 is, as previously mentioned, hold both volume buttons, not power, while powered off, and then plug in. If your device isn't recognized in odin, try going to the samsung site and download the newest drivers there
Edit: ninja'd

Holding power to enter download mode is not valid for I9100 either.

I have an I777 for sure. so not my problem boils down to odin not recognizing my phone when in download mode. Or, when i try to use DooMLorD V3 root... i have seen that highly recommended but it doesn't recognize that my device either.
You need to update your driver. get it from the Samsung site

That's what I'm working on, but even that can't be easy. The .exe file to update the drivers has a problem opening and windows shuts it down...ugh.
Are you opening Odin with your phone already plugged in on dl mode... Mine never works unless I open Odin first then plug my phone in...

^this. Odin must be open first then go into download mode on the phone. Doing it another order, Odin won't always recognize your device

+1. Have Odin already open before you even start putting your phone in download mode.
Or try another computer. You could always just use Odin 1.85 and flash a kernel tar file, such as entropy or siyah.
