Killing Throttling? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok, so I of course went over my 5gb again.like every month. Was using the APN Settings to kill throttling and deleted the throttled folder with root explorer.was working great but now its not working only getting 0.05mg download speeds. And everything seems to time out.I really hate fcking throttling from T-Mobile.wouldn't be a problem but when I can't even load a web page or the market without it timing out half the time. Man WTF! Why do I pay over $120 a month. Wish I could really stop them from throttling me.

You should tell them you can't navigate the web anymore cause they throttled your web browsing , that is a service you pay for monthly so them taking it away from you is breach of contact if it takes those speeds to browse the internet that's not your fault and being rejected from the net due to time out means your paying for a service you can no longer use they either need to make the internet not require those speeds or not throttle people remember you don't pay for unlimited downloads but you do pay for unlimited web so now your paying them for something you can't even use I would complain till my head blew up I mean they sent me this phone for free cause I complained I'm sure they can hook you up just be prepared to ***** a lot for long periods of time be persistent and make sure they know this is unacceptable and the next time it happens you'll terminate service with them and front line a boycott I'm sure thee will be plenty of pissed off people to join you or just roll over and let them service you from behind

Dam T-Mobile fixed it already.dam it! Guess I'm SOL!

The very first time I get throttled I will cancel my service, sell my phone to cover the cancellation and take my number and 120 a month elsewhere. Throttling the vibrant is dumb on so many levels. They should think that these devices are going to reach those levels often and so wait until the phones are closer to the end of their contract. Especially since the phones resale value will cover the ETF. Dumb. Id cancel and go elsewhere. If you don't, enjoy being pimped. Most my use is on wifi. Just once, thats all that is needed.

So i used mine my tethering with the hd2 for 6 months straight and never had a problem. I often called to even check. They told me many times they do not check.
and btw the response after your question just isnt right.
I don't think they can tell if you're sucking all the bandwidth with your phone or a tethered computer, probably why they set a hard limit on the monthly bandwidth.

+1 yes pointless op commentary
TMO can tell when you exceed 5gigs........ that is all they look for. Remember now phones have the ability to download pretty fast so whether they are used for tethering or not is of no matter to TMO just the total download of data per month
5gb cap.
If you read the terms and service it says once you have past the 5gb cap you will get slower dl speeds which is nice of them as all other carriers charge you for the extra data used. That would be the only reason they would check it and I can say this after 5gb has been reached which I have noticed it does show in the dl speed after you reached your cap but hey at least they dont charge you like i said.
there is some sort of fingerprint associated to a desktop site vs a mobile site. if they wanted to be assholes, they probably could tell. but we're on tmobile, not ATT remember?
Mobile browsers can set their user agent to desktop browsers
The myth that other carriers charge you for going over the cap is false. Verizon and Sprint are truly unlimited while AT&T is the only company that will charge for overages. Now when Verizon drops LTE that might change things. Personally I have never gone over 5gb even though tried this last DEC. while on vacation. I only managed to accumulate 2.5gb.
I have known a couple of people recently who were using mobile ap or tethering on rooted devices, tmobile detected it and shut down their net until the next billing cycle. Not sure how tmo knew, but they did and the text these two recieved stated just that, tmo has detected unauthorized data usage/tethering and is shutting off services until so and so. Just a word to the wise.

They won't shut you down if you pay for the service, however if you don't pay for it and are using the service on a rooted device, technically they could cancel your account entirely for breaking their tos. Think about it before you call bs next time.

What was your normal data usage?
Gee where have you been??? There is no unlimited data roaming. You need to read the fine print or even listen to the commercials they state it very clearly in the commercials that unlimited data on smart phones is on Sprint towers only. People have been getting their accounts terminated by Sprint for excessive data roaming for the last couple of years. Do a search of all forums and you will probably see a lot of threads. In fact if you want to get out of your contract that is one of the easiest ways. Install a Verizon PRL and go crazy on the data. Careful though, it also states in your contract that Sprint can bill you for the overage.

They billed me 146 biggens in May when I joined for voice overages. Didn't realize it was only on the Sprint towers. Litterly I saw a month later them saying it on commericals.

Wow. EXACTLY the same thing just happened to me today. Said it was for excessive data roaming which is bull**** because my sister had more roaming data and she still has service. My only guess is that it is a blanket excuse if you use a lot of regular data because they can't cancel you for that. Extremely bummed out and pissed about this right now.
EDIT: this last pay period was the only time I have roamed on data for this phone. They said they sent out 3 warning but we didn't receive any. Sorry if this sounds ranting or anything, I am just really frustrated with the whole situation.

Pretty good way to get your accounts terminated. Sprint has zero tolerance for using their network for torrent downloads.... if they catch you, no warning. Just toast.

ROFL at this thread.
It's just funny how there are people on both ends of the spectrum:
One side is using too much data, not reading the contract, and getting booted for it.
The other side is using too much data, has read the contract, and is trying to get booted for it.
Nobody is talking about the fact that both sides are hogging the network and slowing down data for everyone else out there (whether Verizon's or Sprint's network). But hey, at least your going away.

He is violating 2 terms of conditions, not only one doing this. Chances are you were also warned before hand. If you weren't warned before hand then I believe the OP violating the ToS on two conditions is grounds enough.
I also don't understand why the OP put "usage on an unlimited plan" in the thread title. What does that have to do with his termination? Surely it is for empathy but I don't think he knew exactly he signed onto in regards to his excessive roaming use.
I think he was talking about me running the client
if it was an option i would gladly turn in my phone if they would let me out of my contract but its not. I have been lied to over and over about 4g coming to phoenix and i stuck with them because i knew it would get better. in the 18 months i have been with sprint not only have i been lied to about 4g coming but the 3g service has gotten to the point where its unusable. now sprint is changing over to lte that means my phone is pretty much useless its not a moral issue for me i refuse to pay for something im not getting.

UPDATED AFTER CALL Anyone received a call from ATT regarding FCC ONLINE Complaint?

I received a call today from ATT (missed the call and it went to voicemail) about the online FCC COMPLAINT about the UNLIMITED data plan and throttling issues. If anyone else has received a call would you mind sharing your interactions with ATT on the matter? I will update further any information once I call them back tomorrow morning/afternoon. I ha e to say I am surprised on getting the call so soon since I made the complaint just over a week or two ago. So any info for those that also received the call back please let me know. Thanks

I already have the grandfathered unlimited data plan. I have had it for many years and now they start throttling me. Plus ATT Office of tbe President contacted me about the fcc filing, I did not contact them.
It would be one thing to throttle me at anything above 4Gb per month since they still have a plan with 2Gb data and 2Gb tethering combined for the total of 4Gb per month. I pay and have paid the $30 month to keep my unlimited.I also have two other lines that have the 2Gb per month plans which is $25 month for those two other lines.. If those 2Gb plans go over it automatically starts charging overage charges up to another Gb of Data. But Unlimited really should be unlimited per definition.
But being throttled at 2Gb to the point of .14Mb/s is basically turning OFF the data usage. If it was throttled down to lower speeds than the 8-10Mb/s I get when i am not throttled down to maybe the 1-2Mbs that my captivate gets when it is on 3G speeds may be acceptable, just not .14Mb/s. TOTALLY UNACCEPTABLE.
I usually only used 2-4Gb Data per month and do not tether. So i as others have done said enougb is enough and filed the complaint as others too have.
Sent From My KickAss ATT SGS2 SPORTING CM7
There is definitely a point where at&t could rationalize throttling us 'unlimited' users, but in my opinion, 2GB is a rediculous limit. The 'unlimited' plan always had a soft cap of 5GB(ish), and I think that should be the point at which throttling occurs. We pay more than the majority of smartphone users, and while I can't speak for others, the majority of the time I come in well below 2GB. What about the 5 years of unlimited data i've been paying for?
All that money I threw away by not using all my data, and now they're gonna throttle people at some arbitrary number between 2-4GB?? It's insane. It didn't really bother me to find out that people averaging 10GB per month were getting throttled, but under 5GB?? NO WAY! When I signed up for unlimited data I understood that after 5GB I would start getting into trouble, but to think that i've been paying $30/month per line for five years, and now i'm gonna get throttled at 2-3GB. UNACCEPTABLE. As soon as some info is released i'm gonna be all over this.
OCCUPY AT&T!!!
I was looking for that link just the other day. Another form has been submitted by myself over this throttling business. And yeah, I don't use over 200MB or so per month so this is just for those that have been dealing with this ****. It needs to be looked into by them as it's becoming quite ridiculous...
I do not use a lot of data either but I did keep my unlimited plan. I do not like the stance that AT&T has taken. I get that it costs a lot of money to provide the capacity and bandwidth that we want but the fact that no criteria for getting lumped in the top 5% have been provided is ridiculous.
I don't have unlimited but would love it but not with all of AT&Ts crap. I mean the simple term Unlimited implies "no limits"

That went out the window in the 1900's. These days, its only a marketing term. Like, "new and improved" 30 years ago, and "previously loved" 20 years ago. Oh, and how my cable modem (from comcast) is "always on".
pfft
Gary
The thing that bothers me is that when I signed up for AT&T, I was pressured into getting the unlimited plan, which at the time meant that you could use up to 5GB. I realize that bandwidth is scarce in this day and age, but if they were planning on limiting us to 2 or 3 GB they should never had told us we were 'grandfathered' into our plans. At the very least they need to set a specific range for this 'top 5 percent' BS
I am probably not going to be liked for posting this, but I think that throttling should be based on how much network traffic they currently have, so for example in New York City, you will be throttled like crazy most of the time which is unfortunate but necessary, but in a rural area, throttling will most likely never happen, also at night, throttling would be rare too. I know this is an impractical idea, but if they're going to throttle, then this would make the MOST sense, because why would they need to throttle you if you're not slowing their network down, it just doesn't make any sense to me.

so for someone who has tiered plan can run max speed up to however many GB every month (just gotta pay for the overage but you dont get throttled) while unlimited data user gets throttled to almost a halt after 2gb?
does that make sense?
a 4gb tiered user runs max speed up to 4gb every month, not considered top 5%
unlimited users runs up to 4gb a month, is considered top 5%, gets throttled after 2gb
I received the call back from The Office of The President and spoke to him about my fcc complaint. We spoke about how low the throttling is (.14Mb/s) and he said it shouldnt be that low from what he understands. It is only suppose to throttle low enough that streaming video and other streaming wont work properly. I let hom know that i hadn't streamed anything during the last month like netflix or any other streaming. I let him know that the BIGGEST things i have done data wise was i have to download files that are usually 100-300Mb occasionally for work. He said he couldnt remove the throttle for this month but is gonna dig deeper into things to make sure there wasnt any outages in my area and such which would explain the LOW .14Mb/s download speeds. I told him I usually( when not throttled) get at minimum 2-4Mb/s and near my work get 6-10Mb/s download speeds, so dropping down to .14 is plain unacceptable. He is going to look into these tjings and get back with me either by the end of this week or early next week. He also made sure i had his phone number to reach him back. So i will again update once I have more information.
ALSO if you aren"t on a UNLIMITED grandfathered plan and think THIS WONT HAPPEN TO ME. look at how ATT is now going to change rates for their plans now. It says you cn keep your plans or upgrade if you want. That is EXACTLY how it was for us with UNLIMITED data plans. So one day/someday ATT will make some changes that WILL effect you also and MAKE you pay the higher prices. Yeah, the current system of throttling is simply unusable. It's essentially the equivalent to completely disabling data.
How did you actually fill out that form? I want to file a complaint too. The fact that my data usage is continually falling and I'm getting put in this mythical 5% of users category. I wish there was some weirdo hippie way to occupy att by getting everyone to stream media for a weeks time.

Yeah I'm not that stupid. The forms don't really deal with exactly what our complaints are since att no longer advertises nor offers unlimited plans but that's the only choice that makes sense according to the form which is why I asked.

Verizon strikes again, big time, trying to control Internet traffic!

http://news.yahoo.com/appeals-court-strikes-down-fcc-internet-rules-162158164--finance.html
Please go to the freepress.net petition link and sign the petition to help FCC restore Internet neutrality.
In the press conference Verizon states that they remain committed to open Internet. If that's the case, why did they fight to win the battle to control Internet access and what goes through their networks?
I think Verizon has really done it now. First they want to control how much data people use, next what people do with their phones, now they want to control what websites people can visit or who gets access to the Internet. If they get away with this, it will be the end of free Internet access. I think that's too far for any company to go. I urge people to terminate their lines or service with Verizon if this doesn't get reversed. I am prepared to do the same thing. Without their customers they're nobody, Verizon cannot be allowed to go this far, someone, hopefully the FCC, will put Verizon back in its place!
Oh I will be done with Verizon for sure. Tired of all the bs.

It is disgusting that being cash flush allows major corporations to pervert the Constitution. I don't actually need a cellphone anyway. I have a home phone and a CB with a 700 watt Midnight special linear amp in my truck with a 102" steel whip. It does shut my truck down on occasion though and Jack in The Box hates when I key up.... maybe I need a bigger ground strap?
I guess what I'm saying is the idea of getting people together and boycotting for a purpose is a great idea but it will never happen. Take any given Sunday and 2 million or more people can get together and watch Football but you can even get 2000 together in an effort to preserve their civil rights or freedoms. Just my .02
F U Verizon!!
Our judicial system is completely f'd... once this starts I'm out... Verizon can keep their locked phones and kiss my a$$...
That is such BS. If that were to happen I might have to abandon ship.
I'm on Verizon Unlimited and use about 20gig a month on average and yet to see slowdown - run speed test app often.
If this happens I'm definitely leaving them. Right now I have unlimited data also I can upgrade my line. But with this news going around, I'll just wait and see what happens. Either way I'll be ready for you Verizon!

The trouble is that it isn't just Verizon, this mess has been several years in the making and just about every big internet provider is on the same side as big V. If Verizon gets away with it, it will become standard practice and you won't be able to escape by crossing the street.
The truth is, legally the judge made the correct choice: the FCC doesn't have the authority to regulate broadband internet unless they classify it as a communications service. It was the FCC who dropped the ball on this one and they are the ones who need to fix it.
I've been noticing something strange for the past few days. Maybe it is related to this, maybe not.
If you are an Xfinity TV customer, you might know they offer an app called Xfinity TV Go for mobile streaming. I've called it a scam before because it is only available to Verizon only and it eats about 1.5-2GB/hour without even being high quality. I use it because I have UL data, so that doesn't worry me.
In Philly, I get a whopping 3 Mbps down on Speedtests. Its been like that for more than a year. Up until a few days ago I could stream Youtube HD videos no problem, but now I can't even stream on 4G at low quality (not HD). I installed a traffic meter and it is only using 80-100KB/s, nowhere near saturating 3Mbps. However, on Xfinity TV Go I can pull down 400-500KB/s consistently with spikes to 1MB/s. I only bring this up because Comcast and Verizon are affiliated in markets without FIOS, and it wouldn't surprise me if they were doing something to it.

Verizon to Disconnect Heavy Unlimited Data Users

well this isn't going to be good for some of us....

I don't really feel sorry for those who use 100+ GB/month. Those are the users that prompted the removal of the unlimited plans to start with. You can scream "unlimited is unlimited" if you want but its Verizon's sandbox and they make the rules.

Agreed...there comes a point (about 100 GB a month) where it becomes an "unjust enrichment" for the end user....and this is why we cannot have nice things lol
I'm surprised Verizon didn't go the route of...well the unlimited data plan started in the days of 2G/3G only...so that's the only unlimited data you get...when you are on 2G/3G.
Maybe I shouldn't give them any ideas... :/
agreed. I live out in the boonies, I am on 1x and sometimes 3g. my internet is only dsl at 2.5Mbps (3g speeds) ... so whenever I hit 4g on my phone, I do everything with it. so i sometimes rack up 70gb+ a month. especially when im at work ..teamviewer, netflix, streaming cameras setup at various locations, music is always going, showbox, kodi (tends to use a lot more data than other streaming apps)... the data rack up quick.
Has anyone actually reported receiving a letter yet ?
I use it as primary internet. Been paying for it for so long. Screw paying $60+ a month for cable that is the same speed but doesn't offer the same capabilities that cellular data does. I rack up over 100gb a month but it's a business account so i doubt they will cut me off.
The fcc does nothing about the internet monopoly in my area because it's not considered a monopoly because wireless internet is considered an option. When verizon charges what they do for internet it clearly isn't an option. We all know verizon can afford to give you more GB's at a lower price.
Most of the infrastructure is already in place and they are paying purely for maintenance at this point. And when they are talking about faster speeds with xlte and lte-a they are expecting you to use more data but have no plans on reducing the cost per gb. Faster speeds means a larger resource pool to tap into. The excuse that heavy udp users are decreasing the speeds for others is basically a thing of the past at this point.
Honestly it's all bs marketing and political manipulation. Tell me why countries in the EU can offer unlimited lte data for 35 euoros a month, which people use as their primary internet source, if this isn't the case?

And why R u saying at 100 gigs a month? Why this amount? Unjust? U r an idiot in perspective. Unjust =Hilary Clinton's Fuk'n National security (knowingly) and walking free. Unjust= people like me or in my "group" pay more in taxes than the "wealthy." UNJUST=VERIZON lying about the effects people such as myself have on "their" network I pay for by using what U stated over "100 gigs" monthly. OPEN UR EYE'S FRIENDS, $$MONEY$$ $$MILLIONS IN BONUSES$$ U should have Verizon show you this "negative" effect. Lol, in words and writing sure but 100% accurate proof including data analysis by 3rd party/partys not Affiliated whatsoever with Verizon does not/will never exhist cause its a story kinda like the Easter Bunny. Do you people not understand the technology that we are using and the capabilities at our hands? The 1% of customers with unlimited data is not something that would be an issue unless it was about money my friend. Do your research think about it come on, look what they're doing in Switzerland.

You should send Verizon Customer Service this coherent, well thought out argument...I'm sure they will reconnect your UDP in no time....lol
Wait a second, I am currently experience a minor heart attack! They are CANCELING your UDP?!
I have not received a letter regarding this, is anyone else receiving this letter?
http://www.droid-life.com/2017/01/09/verizon-unlimited-data-200gb-limit/
I average 12GB/month (which is NOT heavy use at all) and received my letter informing my UDP is being terminated as of Feb 16. I have complained to both of my local stores and the customer service call center to no avail. I was told that once the letter was sent my fate was sealed.

I read online last night T-Mobile has been gaining twice as many new customers as Verizon since Verizon's been pulling their $*it.

They will regret it, T-Mobiles service, at least here is so spotty its not even worth paying for. When my wife had it she had to use my wifi tethering just to use her phone half the time we went anywhere.
200gb a month is plenty, but the problem is the price of the new plans they want you on. Id never pay those rediculous prices.
But unlimited should be unlimited, i understand that too, but 500gb people... Come on now, that is a little excessive. I don't even come close to that downloading movies all day on my home cable network. So i can see where verizon is coming from. Fair usage.
I am sticking with my Verizon UDP for now, but i have also bought my wife a new phone on at&t's DirecTV unlimited plan that's up to 4 devices just incase verizon pulls out more bs. Figured id jump on that and get grandfathered on that also, since in my area at&t is second best if not identical to Verizon's coverage.
Sprint and T-Mobile are out if the question for me, been there done that.

I agree with you on that one, 200GB/month is a bit excessive and almost abusive to the network load. But for those of us that use 12GB and end up getting our plans yanked from us is insulting. I know I purposefully sought out wifi wherever I could to keep unnecessary use of network resources to a minimum. This is the thanks I was given for my consideration.
To say I feel insulted is putting it lightly.

Oh I feel insulted for you as well. 12GB is not that bad at all. I average 45gb and have not received a letter yet. This whole ordeal is ridiculous. I would rather they implement a cap on the unlimited, like say 100GB or even 40GB and then slow us way down instead of just straight up removing us.
