Ok, we know that Fring and Qik are the two that we can use the front facing camera for any video call per say, but that is only between two phones. How about phone to computer or vice versa? Fring used to offer the skype video call add-on but it is blocked now.
Thanks in advance
Sorry to highjack thread, but I can't get Qik to even recognize the front camera on my 1.6 Streak.. will Fring?

Yes, Fring uses the front facing camera but sadly QIK doesn not recognize the front camera.
Google voice has skype-like functionality, doesn't it? I haven't really tried it myself yet (waiting for my data plan to upgrade the beginning of next month), but considering how ubiquitous gmail is becoming it might be a possibility.
I'm pretty new here but have been a google voice user for a while now amd it is not like skype basically it just gives you a new number and makes you have to go through them to make calls and send texts.

Same on 2.1, the option to switch camera in settings is greyed out. Gonna email qik tomorrow and see if they plan an update to support our devices.

Let us know if you hear back. Thanks.
Finally got a reply from qik, heres what the email says:
Hi,
Sorry to keep you waiting.
We are expanding on the range of phones that Qik will support. There are already some Dell Streak users who have written to us, and we are developing the features now. It would be helpful if you could offer us your feedback on how to make Qik work better for you on the Dell Streak.
Thank you for writing to us, have a great day

Gonna reply and tell them that the option to use front camera needs to be enabled and also maybe to adjust the front camera's brightness?
I noticed when i video call using fring with my friend that has an iPhone 4, his is much brighter than mine which is almost black in a dark room...
Anyone with an ffc try this out and see if it works? Not sure if you need 2.2 as a starting point for it.

Hey Everyone, this is my first Thread and first post . I'm disappointed that no one has actually helped upload the DELL PC SUITE, I tried getting it so many times, and was only able to get it after using Opera, anyway here is the link I uploaded:
hotfile_.com/dl/82048490/70efa28/Updated_Dell_Streak_PC_Sync_Tool_(clair_2.1).zip.html (Not letting me upload external links so just copy the link and remove the _ after 'hotfile')
To members with high ranks and posts, please comment and confirm (after you try it first) that it works and that it's not infected or anything like that, so Other members can trust this link...
or in here:
ftp://ftp.us.dell.com/Handheld/
Your link will only work if you use Opera Browser ...
Just navigate to Dells support site using any browser you choose and download it from there. Not rocket science.
Thanks zarbo...
I'm trying with Filezilla ftp://ftp.us.dell.com/Handheld/ so far downloaded 5% and counting. Let you know if it is successful.
Yehh
edit... 65%
I'm using the FTP link in FireFox and Konqueror and it works in both
that's the one for 2.1... they have one on the support page that says it was uploaded on 10/28 and has a different version # but the ftp link is dead. guess it will be up after 2.2 rolls out.
Success thanks to Zarbo, and many others
Thanks for this, downloaded completed and after plugging the Streak in, its syncing
Its also syncing Contacts, Calendar, Tasks and Notes. I thought Android couldnt sync Tasks and Notes. I'm grinning now hee.
Thanks again for all your help.
Hope the update to 2.2 will not kill the sync... strange why Dell would do such a thing
You're welcome everybody.
BTW if you go to the update option on the dell streak you'll notice that the page has changed, yeah they have updated their servers, probably preparing for big bandwidth suggesting the official 2.2 update for the streak will be out soon
Mine is also an O2 but using in Singapore...
I saw the new page this morning, but its gone now.
I'm using LXdroid 0.2 is there one we can use with custom rom's? I got Dell PC Suite but nothing shows up, tried downloading the eclair version and it said only dell devices were supported then stopped installation, my rom version is 2.3.7

There is no version for custom ROMs and never will be. Not to mention the software is totally unnecessary, even if you were still on a stock ROM.

He's done so little research and reading he has no idea the difference between Eclaire Android 1.6 and the LX DROID. 2 ROM... WHERE do you begin trying to help someone that hasn't even done that much?

I know the difference dude, far from a newb here man. So excuse me if me I jump in head first and learn better that way than from reading a multitude of documents!
Or did ya just ever so kindly ignore my post saying I tried it cause it was the closest BUILD MATCH? Gotta love that SELECTIVE READING!

But anyways I just hoping to play around with the PC Suite some...
Remembered using it when I had the Steak 7.

Well, I have the Froyo version of the suite. I think I still have it for download from mediafire, but you'd have to hack the software to bypass the official version check. Even then it may not work. But for a thought exercise it sounds intriguing.
Going to chime in: cdzo, you really should should phrase your responses better.
Even if he does in fact not really know what he's doing, that tone isnt what xda is about (my opinion, i am not a mod as far as the forums are concerned)
But he is correct: build-wise eclair and froyo are entirely different beasts with regards to the sync software. They're completely incompatable.
Only the 3xx (froyo) roms support sync as far as recent roms are concerned. GB roms are not supported, and only stock 3xx roms are supported. Dont expect it to work on any custom froyo based roms either.
Desktop syncing isnt standardized at all for android, so dell wrote their own desktop syncer and modified the stock apps to be able to sync.
You must use the matching rom and syncer, dell made versions available for 1.6/2.1/2.2 and that's it.
To repeat: as dell made changes to the rom to support it, it will never work outside a stock rom that hasnt had it's stock apps modified.
You can (possibly) hack it back into a newer rom, but it's a lot of work for a no-longer supported tool

even if it is supported.. i just seem cant find when to use it... mostly because of the android application used had that covered pretty much every aspect ... and usually in a better way...
All I can say is that there was a version designed for 3xx, and that's about it.
I've never tried it, I do have copies of it if dell doesnt have a copy anymore.
Hi to all!
nice to write from Italy to all of you!
I just bought a Dell Streak 5 and I've upgraded to 2.2 version that I found more better and complete compared to the 2.1
I switched from HTC because lately, I was bored because of the lees of the ront facing camera (I use to work a lot on Skype)
the thing thatI noticed that when I receive call, the profile picture is small and very low defined.
Is there a trick to make the definition of that image as the original?
Thanks advanced
Best regards

Try the Full Screen Caller ID app in the market. It will give you a high res big picture. I cant get it to work on my crappy 1.6 os. Good luck

I use it with 1.6.1 and works fine
Works good on 2.2 as well!
Make sure you get the correct one as one is very hit and miss - Fullscreencallerpro is very stable and works very well.
Excellent picture quality.
Dearest Guys,
I've followed your suggestions and both of your program work with the 2.2
I have to say that they show excellent pictures quality.
Thank you very much for your help
Best regards

How about GIF?
How come the GIF does not work in the incoming call?
Many thanks.
Nobody uses GIF as the contact icon?
I really am pleased with the work you have done so far Steve and have donated already. I wanted to make a request for yahoo messenger video chat to get the front facing camera option like you did for oovoo if its an easy fix. Also if Skype can recognize video chat. 1.7 Runs very smooth and I had to do a factory reset whithin 1.7 to get it working fully. I kept getting stuck in wifi or 3g and could not go to the other. In case someone is experiencing the same issue. always willing to support and will donate again in the future.

I Also am having difficulty pulling up my work contacts when sending a e-mail with the new keyboard. It just freezes when trying to retrieve the contact from the server.

I would be eternally grateful if Master Steve could provide us with a dialer (Gingerbread/GalaxyTab/dontknowwhatelse...) that supports native video calls.
I do not know if this is possible without Dell's help, but i would really really love this feature that even 50 euro cellphones have nowadays.
I think it would be awesome to get a rip of the new "Facebook phone" apk and build it in. Or hell, just the rip would be fine!
