Problem flashing a rom for vibrant - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So like the title states I'm having some difficulties flashing a rom. I just updated to froyo 2.2 with root and I'm trying to flash nero v5.0. The problem I'm having is when I boot into clockwork i keep getting an E:can't open /cache/update.zip. I've tried both method 1 and 2 from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=732458

Did you make sure to take step 2 on the tutorial? "Flash clockwork recovery"?
If so, I would try it again to see if it helps. Another step is to uninstall ROM manager, then re-install it taking all the steps again. It sounds like you may have accidentally deleted the update.zip file that should be on the root of your SD card.

yea, i tried it. I flashed it. I even clear the data and uninstalled rom manager and reinstalled. I also never touched update.zip as well. This was the first time I've actually mounted my phone to my computer and opened up my internal/external sdcard.

OP, here is a thread I made for issues in the past.
Try this and let me know how it goes:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=875890

still no luck, i boot into recovery and get the same message still

Well, Hmm... You could try the steps in the noob guide and use ODIN to install froyo+root. This is the ALT METHOD in the guide. This is what I personally use.
Not really certain what's going on man, but doing this can't hurt.

I recently followed your guide, I could try again it wouldn't hurt my phone right?

No, you are not going to hurt your phone...
lets troubleshoot.
List to me step by step what you have done... If need be I will ODIN to JFD tonight and we can go through it together. I'm certain it's something silly though. No reason it should not work. You have a a Vibrant on T-Mobile right?

yea i have a tmobile vibrant so this is what i just did right now.
1) Flashed froyo+root from your noob guide followed all the steps (i.e. wipe data etc)
2) downloaded rom manager and flashed clockwork recovery.
3) placed nero v5.0 into the root of the phones internal sdcard.
4) went to rom manager and roboot. E: Can't open /cache/update.zip
(Bad)
Installation Aborted

nvm i think i got it to work

Do i need to do anything special for the longer battery life for nero v5.0

^^ what was the issue?
^ nothing special... you may want to recalibrate your battery. Drain it down to it powers off on its own (or really close)... charge it full... leave it on maybe an hour longer after fully charged... you can bump charge it (DO NOT do this a lot)... all this means is once full, unplug and then plug back in... your "full" battery will accept more charge....
dont boot up, but go straight to CWR and then Advanced > Wipe Battery Stats
reboot with the power cord still connected. Once its booted unplug and use like normal.
I repeat, do not bump charge often, this will hurt your battery.

I just flashed froyo again and used the update zip on the fix thread

[Q&A][FIXED][GUIDE] USB Displays It's Connected No Matter What?

UPDATED: FOUND A FIX! IF THIS WONT WORK I HAVE ANOTHER METHOD BUT ITS QUITE RISKY.
Please rate my thread if it helped
{Disregard my posts asking for help}
This guide is exactly what I did and it was very successful. Please don't blame me if it doesn't work. Keep in mind I did attempt every other option I could think of and this worked. I am not at fault if something goes wrong.
Begin by flashing to stock 2.1 through ODIN and make sure you repartition. Root the stock ROM so you can flash. Then install the latest Froyo by eugene373(you can try a JI6 ROM if you prefer). Now make sure to use a one click root method to re-root (or method of choice).
Download ROM Manager then install clockwork and reboot into it. Do a simple reboot back into your phone from clockwork. Now reboot your phone normally from Froyo ROM. Yes, it is a lot of rebooting, I know!
From here on, the USB saying its on while not plugged in should be fixed - hopefully! The new ROM seems to fix it because the USB settings are a little different..
After is where I think solved the USB problem when the phone isnt booted. Ok, now this is easy. Get back into clockwork, do the following: "Advanced-> Wipe Battery Stats" choose Yes of course. Then just reboot while plugged into USB so phone starts.
It "SHOULD" be fixed at this point!
Unplug from USB and shutdown completely. Now try to start phone without getting the boot looping battery icon. Reboot again to assure this worked for you. If it boots, jump up and down and hope it never happens again. Pull battery a couple times if necessary. This may help if the above failed.
When all is fixed you can install any ROM you wish granted you flash a 2.1 kernel if your not installing another Froyo ROM. Please make sure you understand this.
I only wrote this to help those who have encountered this nasty issue. I really hope it works for you. It is really worth a shot!
If anything was misunderstood, feel free to ask and I will do what I can to help. Ill respond as soon as I get the time.
I think I will make the guide a new thread if its successful. I need feedback. I will also add all download links and fix it up.

*****FIXED*****
Hi.. I have the same problem. Can you please tell me how you made the USB mode off when the phone is on?
I turned off USB debugging and changed the settings to "Ask on connection" then restart the phone when plugged into your computer.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
I also have the same problem... For me going to "Ask on connection" also helped - but USB does not work at all, the connections sign disappears when I plug in USB.
Additionally, I (mostly) could not boot the phone without having USB plugged in.
Yea its horrible having to boot while charging.

Try either flashing a rom with the JI6 update built in or using odin to flash the JI6 update. I talked with tech support and they said the "fix" was supposed to come in the update but if you are like me you didn't get teh update because you are on a third party rom. I found bionix 1.9.1 had the JI6 update in it and flashed it on a list ditch effort before i crushed the phone in frustration and since then i have been free of the USB annoyance. If that doesn't work though, it is a "known defect" and TMO wil replace the phone. You can also just go that route too if you don't want to try flashing all the rom's.
In my case this issue appeared at first after updating... actually thus I am trying to get completely back to stock, trying to fix it that way.
Sending the phone to T-Mobile is difficult since I bought it used on Ebay, isn't it? Or is it realistic to get some help from them?

First post now contains my fix. Just another edit to remove my old question.
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
I finally fixed the issue. After installing Eugenes Froyo port it fixed the USB from staying mounted when the phone is running. Then to fix the problem when the phone is off I booted into clockwork and wiped battery stats. After a reboot or two it was fixed. Dont know if this will work for everyone...post results if you try this. Thanks!

Hi,
Does the Eugene froyo have the JI6 update?
Thanks
B
It uses the JI6 modem but thats about it. You could flash it but in order to restore your JI6 ROM you must also reflash the 2.1 kernel. Read up on it. Its worth it to get rid of the USB problem. Perhaps you could flash Stock through ODIN then update back to JI6 through Kies Mini instead. That way I think would get you back to where you want to be without kernel issues? It may be worth a shot cause the USB problem makes the phone so horrible. Make sure to do a backup of everything you want with Titanium and save any files you want to external SD. Make sure you wipe everything if you do install Froyo cause that is how I did the process. I hope it works for you if you try. Post any questions...

Thanks for the advice!
I will flash the Bionix-Mod, that also has another kernel I think. Yeah and I gonna take care with Voodoo
Updated w/ Solution and hopefully a working fix for others.
It happened to me, but after I flash back to tmobile stock via odin, root, rom manager and flash to bionix final via clockwork(read instalation guide) it's gone.

Yea I suppose any JI6 ROM would work instead of froyo but it wasnt that easy for me. This guide is for who cant make anything else work.

@deez1234
so can you share with us now your vibrant running smothly, power on off without connect usb cable and charger ?
i've same problem, when i turn on phone not powering just show rounds (cercles) turn of (like blinking)
but when i connect usb cable phone show charging so now i press power button, phone turn on,
if i remove usb cable from phone, but when phone fully loaded on desktop show USB IS CONNECTED,
i've spend 3 days for searching solution of my problem but still not luck,
i've follow all your posted procedure, i've flashed successfully froyo also have install rom manager and clockwork but when i try to rebot my phone by rom manager its not work at all, just ask to me wana restart in recovery, but phone not restart, i think rom manager and clockwork not working on 2.2
please suggest me what is need to do next ?
NOTE: my vibrant is brand new just received before 5-6 days, i'm out side of usa that way not able to ask warranty or something
This guide worked perfectly for me. I tried it without partitioning in Odin first (just for a test) and it did not fix it. I then re-Odin'd the phone (following directions with a partition) and it has worked perfectly. I did not reflash a Froyo ROM, I just reflashed Bionox 1.9 and all is well.
Thanks for the fix
I'm glad I could help. And @Ja, are you making sure your rooted cause both ROM manager and clockwork works perfect on 2.2. You can try a JI6 ROM in place of froyo and see if it helps. And yes my Vibrant is as good as new.

[Q] NERO v3 Install

So i rooted my phone and installed clockwork rom manager and downloaded nero v3_voodoo.zip and put it on my phone..boot into recovery mode and now i get
--Installing: SDCARD:/Nero_3_voodoo.zip
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Installing update...
and it stays like this for hours.
Thank You
Which rom/ version are you coming from? Can you boot up normally, not in recovery?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
you rebooted into ClockWorkMod Recovery, right?
@Fearless yes.
@jrod from stock and yes i can boot up phone and it works normally it just doesn't flash the new rom
Weird
I want to say that I had this problem @ one point. I think I downloaded a new copy of the ROM. Sometimes the download get corrupted at one point or another. Have you hit boards.teamwhiskey.com? or head to the IRC chat channel? they have a GREAT support community.
I really hope you ran a titanium backup, or else you will loose all apps. I really suggest springing for the paid version, because the restore is only one click.
ok...try re-downloading the ROM again and see if that works
@led Thank You!
@fearless
Downloaded update.zip to root phone did that blah installed clockwork mod app granted superuser always, clicked flash clockwork did that, copied nerov3 onto sd card opened clockwork selected reboot into clockwork recovery once in recovery i selected the zip i wanted to update to which was nerov3voodo.zip clicked yes and it finds and opens it fine just soon as it hits installing it gets hung up for a long time hours so i just pull out the battery and boot back up to normal android with root
Im not 100% positive if this is required or not but when I flash a rom I always start from stock rom, then use samsung mini kies to update to Ji6, then flash the rom of ur choice. I did nero v3 that way too.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I did the same as jrod after a soft brick recently....
mac
is there kies mini for osx?
Ur gonna have to research a lil cuz it wasn't easy to find, at least for me it wasn't lol and im not sure if there is kies for osx. Again im not sure if this routine will fix ur problem I just know it never fails for me. The one time I did flash straight from stock rom, it was a different rom (not nero) and it worked but it seemed real buggy. I say this cuz I flashed the same rom twice, once from stock JFD and once from JI6. Coming from JI6 seemed much smoother

Wait a minute, the way I'm reading this Nerov3 was on the SD card and not the root of the phone?
If that's the case both update.zip and nerov3.zip have to be on the 16g root memory of the phone, not the SD card.

Haha aite. Ima fill u in. But it might be a difficult to follow, lol:
1) I began by installing the custom ROM "[ROM] Vibrant AOSP ish JK2 1.1 Official FROYO". I had done the back-ups with Clockwork Mod and whatnot. And I also installed the BusyBox.
2) So I successfully installed the custom ROM. However, I read that there was an issue with SD Card's not working??? So I found the .zip file that fixes it and I put it on my SD Card. I then launch into Clockwork Mod, but it freezes on the Vibrant screen. It just boot loops. So I guessed I bricked it.
3) I try numerous times to ODIN it back to stock. It somewhat worked. However, after the Galaxy S screen, it just turns black and nothing loads. Like the interface doesn't show up.
4) I then restore it to a previous state through Recovery. But now, the SD card issue is still present. Like, I can't update/download any apps.
5) I find NERO v3 and I put it on my SD Card. I boot into recovery, and try to install it through there.
6) As I try to install it I get that,
"E: Failure at line 12:
copy_dir PACKAGE:data DATA:
Installation aborted." message.
IF ANYONE CAN PLEASE HELP ME, IT WOULD BE GREAT!!!! Lol.
Hi guys so i planned to upgrade my samsung galaxy to custom rom 2.2. i will appreciate if someone can please tell me that which is the best and stable custom rom for Tmobile Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant (US) Version. i heard that Nero v3 with voodoo lagfix is the best so far. Please correct me if i am wrong. Thanks

Ok ur right that was alot to follow lol. Ur gonna have to start all over and odin back to stock. Make sure you have both the right ....512.pit file that goes next to the PIT selection in odin , obviously. And the ....jfd.tar file that goes in the pda selection. Check the repartition box also. Let odin and the phone do its thing. It usually will sit on the galaxy s screen for a couple minutes. Did you have any lag fixes installed? If so I hope you disabled them first

Depends what ur looking for. The newest and reputable ones are nero v3 and axura 2.2.5.7. Nero is a lil more stable but not by much. Axura is a lil more snappier/faster but also not by much. Both are themed specifically to the makers choice so its ur call which to go with. Without customizing anything I like neros theme better but after I flashed blackfroyo to axura I loved it. Also it seems that nero is more customizable but that could be cuz axura just came out a few days ago. So its ur call. Try em both out. I did. Give one a couple days then the other so you can really wee the positives and negatives. DONT forget to disable voodoo if you try multiple roms

Yeah, I have the *True Stock* files for ODIN. I can get ODIN to do its job, but it doesn't load anything after the Galaxy S screen. Hmmm....perhaps it is the lag switch. How do I disable it?

[Q] Did I brick my phone while flashing Minimal Green Theme ?

hi,
I have a rooted eris with the tazz v28 rom installed and followed the 1 click guide [http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=742228] to root my phone a few months back [this uses adb, I belive].
Today, I was following the instructions on http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=913839 to install the minimal green theme on my eris.
I downloaded the minimal-green-updated.zip file theme [posted in the OP of the minimal green theme thread], put it in my sd card's root folder, rebooted my eris into recovery, then flashed that zip in recovery and rebooted.
[In retrospect, I didn't do a full wipe or davlik cache wipe, because I thought it wasn't necessary because this was a theme, not a rom].
Upon rebooting, my phone comes to a screen with the HTC logo and the little guy dancing around [no skateboard]. This dancing sequence continually repeats itself.
I'm really hoping I did not brick my eris. How can I revert back to my nand backup that I made yesterday or fix this situation ?

how to go back to your nand.
1. pull battery
2. place battery back in
3. hold vol down
4. while holding vol down, press and hold power button
5. should see white screen
6. press vol up for recovery
7. should see recovery menu
8. go to the restore option on the menu
9. restore from your nand (i believe the exact menu selections from this point vary based on which recovery you have)
this should get you back to where you were prior to flash. good job with the nandroid prior to flash. other should be able to help with where the flash went wrong. if it doesnt work, post back here.
edit: was the theme designed for froyo? does the md5sum of your file match the original file posted? either could lead to a bad flash. although it may have to do with not wiping. not really my specialty though. oh yeah that's right, i don't have any specialty...lol. hope it helps.

Thanks for the quick help !
I'm relatively sure the theme was designed for froyo. After reading the replies in that thread, [after I flashed the theme] I think I may have needed to first use another application to make the .zip flashable.
I followed your instructions and when I tried to restore the nand backup, I received the following:
Code:
error: run 'nandroid mobile.sh restore' via adb!
Also, my battery was relatively low [20%] when I flashed the theme... is it ok if I charge it right now ?
yes. you need to turn charge it now. note: it will not charge while in recovery, but should charge when powered off. this is why it is a good habit to only flash on a full charge. let me know right away if the charge light does not come on when it is powered off.
edit: do you still have the flashable tazz v28 on your sd card. if so, you can wipe data and cache and reflash it. if it is not on your card, you should be able to mount your card via usb in recovery and add the tazz v28 to the root of the sd and then flash from there.

i believe the minimum for some things such as running an ruu is 30%. it might be the same for nandroid, but it is best to do on a full charge, that way if something more serious does happen, you have some time to try to fix it. there are some ways to "jumper" your battery if it dies during a flash, but they arent fun.
just making sure, the charge light is on now correct? also, are you using amon ra recovery or clockwork? if you don't know, don't turn on you phone to check, i am just checking because once your phone is back up and running, you may want to get amon if you have clockwork, it does a better job of checking the integrity before flashing.

Charge light is on and I'm 99% sure it's amon_ra . I specifically recall that, before rooting my phone reading that one of those two recoveries was buggy with eris and I purposefully avoided using that one.

alright, good stuff. when your phone charges, go back into recovery, go to backup restore, nand restore and see if you can. if not, if you have the tazz rom on your phone, go to the main menu, wipe, wipe data and dalvik, back to main menu, flash zip from sd card, flash it. if it is not on your card, plug phone into your computer, from main menu of recovery select usb-ms toggle, this will allow you to access your sd from your computer, place the flashable zip on the sd, then follow the above instructions. just post back if you end up needing any more help.
I just tried to restore my nand backup and it worked. Looks like it's all smooth sailing here. =)

not a problem. we all have our little speedbumps...lol

Is rooting really this easy?

I was sick of having a stock phone, and after tons of flashing on WM, I decided to take a dive into rooting my new fascinate..
I found some good roms, but it seems as though Evil Fascination is the one I want.
Is this all I have to do? (my phone is completely stock, and 2 days brand new)
Download Odin onto my computer.
Download Recovery onto my computer.
Install Samsung Drivers for your pc onto my phone after enabling debugging.
Remove battery from the phone
Connect the phone up through USB and hold volume down during the connection
Your phone will be in download mode
Open up Odin and click on the pda button and select the recovery file
Click Start on Odin - phone will reset when flashed
Hold volume up and down and insert battery back into the phone and boot it up. Hold volume up and down while it boots up and it will boot into CWM recovery. If it has boot up to the startup animation you will need to start over and reflash recovery through odin
Boot into CWM recovery
Select Wipe data/factory reset
Select Install zip from sdcard and select where you stored the rom
Screen will flash during install
Reboot phone after installation
Is that all? Do I just download odin / recovery onto my computer and go from there? And also. Once I have done this, if I want to flash a new rom, do I just repeat the entire process above but open the new rom I want from my SD card? Is there anything else I have to do once I've followed these steps on my phone? Just download / install a theme and I'm good to go!?
Also, this process is 100% reversible, correct?
sorry if this sounds so stupid, but I always thought flashing roms was crazy difficult, but it doesn't seem that bad at all. Most of the responses I see overcomplicate things and make it so that I can't understand, and this guide seems very straight forward so please let me know if I forgot anything or if I'm missing any steps since I'll be doing this on a mac. I just really don't want to mess anything up.
Thanks so much in advance!
Thatd basically it. Ibwould add one thing though, and thats to always use the PDA button in Odin, never anything else. Other than that, your all set.

Looks like you've got everything correct. Zip file on sd card, download ODIN and recovery to computer, open ODIN, flash recovery in PDA section. pull usb cord, put battery in, boot directly to CWM (you can take a few extra seconds to make sure you do this by holding volume up, volume down, and power button at the same time until samsung logo flashes for the second time then let go of all three buttons the instant you see samsung flash for the second time), install zip from sd card, choose zip from sd card, find zip file, install (volume buttons scroll in CWM, power button makes selections), reboot phone, done. Then when you want to flash new ROM or theme or patches or mods or kernels, boot to recovery, install from sd card. Most ROMs also include the long press power button menu, hold the power button for like two seconds and a long menu will appear with options for powering off, rebooting, and recovery.
thanks so much for the replies, I'm about to try this now!!!! Im excited.
A few last questions, If I want to change the theme, do I have to download the theme as though it is a rom, and redo all of my steps,
or can I just transfer the theme onto my SD and then install it from there?
ps; any programs you guys recommend aside from the usual? (pandora, google maps, backup assistant, facebook)
There seem to be a few differences in WM and Android, thanks again for the help and being so nice to a rookie

Just put the theme on sd card and flash through CWM.
Tapatalk is a good one. That's how you can check on the forums and post from your phone. That is if you want to be able to do that for more than one forum. XDA has a premium app that works just the same. I'm a big fan of Jorte calendar rather than the stock calendar. Jorte is formatted to look just like a day planner.
Just gonna throw out that K-9 mail is a nifty email program and a bit more useful than the stock

The Gmail app isn't to be overlooked IMO. I suggest forwarding all mail to your Gmail. Everything ends up perfectly in-sync on your phone and on your computer. I used to deal with setting up all kinds of POP servers, but I haven't looked back.
Also for a file browser you should get Root Explorer. As for everything else it's really what you want to use your phone for. I like be minimalist, but there are so many useful apps on the market. Just do some looking around.

As for apps there's a ton of them, I have about 100 or so on my phone but only use maybe a third of them regularly. It's all personal preference. Also you may want a different look for your home screens so a third party home screen app from the market like launcher pro or go launcher are pretty nice and very customizable. Main thing is to get it working and looking the way you want it while having fun with it at the same time

If all you are trying to do is root SuperOneClick v1.8 works great. ED03 just run it, if it fails, Happens sometimes, re run. It may ask if if you are running a 2.0+ OS, really easy Instructions, basically just follow what pops up on the screen asking, after it finishes, reboot your phone.
If anyone wants to try it or use it, here's a link
So, another newb question, what ask do hI have to do if all I want is to be de-binged and able to under clock cpu? Can I root with only a couple of changes and not a while new kernel? Thanks

Sorry, bad job of proof reading before posting. BTW, I am running ed04 now.

I'll second launcher pro. Love it way more than t-wiz. And Audiogalaxy!! It shares all music from your pc to your phone anywhere you go. Only downside is you computer has to be on to use it (mine stay on anyway). I have 25000 songs on my phone. They are added as soon as I download them, I never have to transfer files or use up sd card space. Have burned a cd since I got my fassy.
And comrom is where its at. Until cm7 is finished.

I'm honestly surprised no one has flamed the poor guy for asking a question in the general section lol...
could that actually be....wait a minute...YES! tolerance and patience on xda. Nice to see for once.

I personally would recomment ADW Ex over launcher pro. As launcher pro isn't really getting any updates nowadays and I find ADWEx to run more smothly and the theming engine to be better. Both are good launchers though and I've bought both.

Can't boot into CWM to save my life.

Hi there. Today, I set out to install a new rom. My old one was the NinjaAtrix, but lately the GPS lock has been very, very slow.
So, I wiped everything, and used Tenfar's CWM to flash the Aura rom and Faux's overclock kernel, remembering to wipe cache.
Upon boot, my wifi didn't work and my data/calls/text didn't work, AND I couldn't boot into CWM!
I encountered this before, and simply started over from installing a new SBF, and re-rooting it. It had already been unlocked, but I tried to unlock it again anywyas, with a message "Phone has already been unlocked."
Well, I looked and saw RomRacer's CWM was the preferred, and promptly ran the Fastboot commands. All seemed successful, but I can't boot into CWM. It acts as if it isn't there, and simply boots into the phone when I reboot with a USB cable plugged into a wall charger.
I read elsewhere to try installing the CWM via Rom Manager, which brings similar results.
I just tried flashing the rom with Rom Manager, to exhaust all my options, but it led me to an infinite boot animation. I'm going to re-flash the SBF and get back to the stock rooted rom, and see what solutions you guys can come up with.
I've spent the better portion of the past 6 hours tinkering with this darn'd thing.
Though, I didn't get introduced to the world of fastboot.
why do people not listen to me....
Try deleting "install-recovery.sh" @ /system/etc, then reinstall ROM Racers CWM and boot into Recovery.

Erm, you need to hold volume down + power when powering on, than use volume down to pick recovery and start it with volume up. There's no wall charger in booting to romracers recovery. And ye delete the script that was already suggested.

I meant to mention that. There was no install-recovery.sh in /system/etc.
I used File Expert, with R/W permissions. I read that, don't worry. I also read another one of your posts where you mention this.
Now, I used Root Explorer, and couldn't find it. I'm running a search on the entire phone now.
