[Q] Status of Wifi tethering - Gen8, Gen9, Gen10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm on the verge of buying an archos 70 8GB IT, but I need a critical question answered first.
I'm planning on using this on my car, and would need to grab internet from my phone. I have an ATT captivate running a custom froyo rom. Now, there is an function on my phone to start a mobile AP through wifi (I believe it is the standard froyo feature and not some third party add-on).
Does this wifi hotspot not work with the archos? This would be a major dealbreaker as bluetooth is out of the question due to having to use a GPS to bluetooth adapter.
I've read a couple of forums up and down and no one seems to have answered this question completely. It seems that everyone has come to the conclusion that android does not have support for ad-hoc networks. I guess my questions lies more along the lines of whether the froyo mobile ap is an adhoc network.
Thanks.

You may remove your connection.
Re-connect it with power save disabled
it may OK

I am using a ZTE Blade/San Francisco with a custom Froyo rom and I can wireless tether my Archos 70IT to my wireless hotspot.

I have a rooted HTC Incredible with stock froyo, and tether my A70 using Wireless Tether from the market. Works great. So does my bluetooth gps, by the way.

Not that this should change your plans, but the fact that you need Bluetooth for GPS doesn't necessarily eliminate using Bluetooth for tethering simultaneously.
I've done exactly that with a Blackberry Tour (for tethering) and a cheap-when-I-bought-it TomTom Bluetooth external GPS unit. I used this configuration to get Google Navigation working. FWIW, doing this actually drove me to get CoPilot, as I didn't want to be tethered all the time to do GPS navigation.

That's interesting, I was under the impression that you could only have one device paired at one time. This is good news as I was hoping to perhaps write a program that would allow me to use the archos as a bluetooth headset (to receive calls while in the car), but since I would already have been using it for GPS, I didn't think I could do that.
Regarding my original question, it appears the the froyo mobile AP feature does work in infrastructure mode, I made a hotspot and my friend's nexus one connected to it fine.
Thanks.

I tried to tether to my HTC HD2 with WM 6.5.3, but no success. WiFi hotspot is ad-hoc, Bluetooth and USB tethering simply doesn't work. I'm at a deadlock... Any ideas?

Doesn't the HD2 run android as well? You could switch to that.

Hi,
I´m also in trouble with mobile 6.5 on Omnia i8000 and archos 101. No tethering via BT or USB. Seems to be a mobile 6.5 problem.
I tethered my archos via BT to an SE t630 without any problem.
But I need it for my maindevice Omnia ...

Could you link to an .APK file for download? On my rooted myTouch Slide with CM6, it just doesn't show up in the market.

I just got my A70 IT 250 gb, I am not able to use Wifi Tether from my Epic 4G. Rooted with Froyo.
any help will be greatly appreciated..

Using the Mobile AP option is the settings menu? Or using some custom Sprint functionality. The Mobile AP one should work.
By the way, where did you buy your A70, I've been trying to buy one but its sold out everywhere.

Just wondering how did you root your A70? was it easy? I saw a post on XDA on how to root Archos Gen8, using SDE. I read thru it and got chicken out.

Wireless Tether is an app you run on your rooted android phone. It shares the phone's 3G/4G connection, which will show up as an available connection in your A70's wireless settings and allow you to access the internet with your tablet.
An adhoc network is used to allow the devices to communicate and share files with each other. I don't believe the A70 will connect using adhoc wifi.

Once you have Wireless Tether installed and opened on your rooted android phone, open up the settings. Change the SSID to something you will recognize. I would leave the encryption and access control off until you have it working. Then go back to the main screen and press to start tethering. Once it starts, open the wifi settings on your A70 and scan for devices. You should see your phone and be able to connect to it.
Once working, I recommend going back and setting the access control and encryption. You will have to set a passphrase in the phone for the encryption, then edit the connection on you tablet (long press) and add it to the settings. With access control enabled, you have to accept the connection on you phone the first time. Once you start tethering and your tablet tries to connect, hit menu->access control on the phone and accept the connection.

I've red that Android devices could connect to ad-hoc networks if you are able to make changes in config files via adb. Alas I can't do this on my 101

Application similar to Verizon Hot Spot

Is it possible to create an application similar to Verizon Hot Spot, then Archos can connected and work fine?
Its not an app issue that you can solve on your phone, its a hardware issue. Verizon hotspot app works in "Infrastructure mode" (ie Routers, real accesspoints) because the phone wifi hardware allows it. Most phones and laptops with wifi don't have that, and will only work in Peer to peer mode known as Ad-Hoc mode. Unfortunately the wifi scanner on Android was coded to ignore Ad-Hoc signals.
If you can't use Wireless Tether for Root Users, try tethering over Bluetooth by changing its options.
I have tried Barnacle and Rooter for LG Ally(SUperOneClick) from this forum. But as I uderstood right Adroid Archos 70 would not see it becuase didn't have capability to see Ad-hoc.
So I was thinking here a lot a very talant programmers, so if Verizon creat Hot Spot, that works as wifi rooter, so someone be able create similar to it for rooted users.
Thanks
Not true. If you have the hotspot app it will work. Depending on the phone you have you can download ROMs that have this app built in/hacked in that will work to tether.

Wireless Tether for root doesn't provide "infrastructure mode" on the Fascinate. Also, Bluetooth tether does not work on the Fascinate. (keep getting "unknown state")...
Obviously the phone is capable of infrastructure, because of the "hot spot" app, which does work with the Archos....
Gotta get the Wireless Tether for Root guys to fix it for the Fascinate.....

PDANet works on mine. I think wifi tether will work if you're rooted. I am not rooted, so cannot say for sure.
I just rooted. I installed wifi tether. The phone makes it look like its working but if it does not show up in the network list of any of my devices like my laptop and my tablet. Anyone have wifi tether working after root?
I used the 3.2 beta of WiFi tether on my rooted photon and it worked great for me.
Which WiFi tether are you using? Who is the author? Did you get it from the market?
Nevermind, I picked up Barnacle Wifi from the market and it appears to work fine. I am posting this message from my Macbook over the barnacle wifi on my photon

Scratch this! The Barnacle program does work but when you turn it off and I did this twice to repeat it, I had to reboot my Macbook, my phone and for whatever reason why my home router in order to get my Macbook and Photon to connect to my home network again. So I guess back to square 1, anyone know a program that works properly? I have tried many now including different versions of WiFi tether and my Photon will not show up on any of my device networks.

i had to change the power settings then it worked fone 10+mbps when retrieving media
I used pdanet to USB tether and ir0t worked great. It was almost too easy!
I can confirm that WiFi Tether if you go to there website the 3.1 Beta 2 appears to work perfectly on a rooted Photon. My phone now shows up as a network and with security on and everything my tablet and laptop surfed the net no problem.
I disagree 3.2 doesnt work , the best you can get is adhoc and it tells you that access control can not be enabled
I can confirm that my paid-for copy of PDAnet 3.02 works on my Windows laptop w/ my non-rooted Photon over USB. However, PDAnet does not do wifi tethering.

Just a heads-up for anyone trying to connect to WiFi Tether with some/most Android tablets (like my Xoom). You might need to modify your device to be able to join ad-hoc networks. For the Xoom, it was as easy as replacing the wpa_supplicant binary.
Before I changed that file, my Xoom couldn't see the wireless network that my MoPho was broadcasting.

[INFO] Wi-Fi Tether Touchpad to Rooted Andoid Device (Hotspot)

Hey everyone, just wanted to let you rooted android users out there know that you can tether to your touchpad pretty easily.
Go download the newest version of wifi tether 3.1beta5

Install it
Run it
Menu-Settings
Change Device-Profile
Select Samsung Fascinate
Change Setup-Method
Select Softap for Samsung (Master)

And now you are good to go. I have used this on my fascinate running the community rom, also read that someone had it running on their charge as well.
Have fun tethering.
Post back if this does or doesn't work for you, what device, and what rom/kernal you are running.

maybe reboot? Mine works flawlessly on my android and touchpad

Some android phones can only broadcast wifi via adhoc mode which is incompatible with the touchpad. Its not a matter of what program you choose, if your phone can only do ad-hoc wifi then it wont work. Try using bluetooth (Wireless Tether 2.0.7)

BT tether !!

Ok maybe its just me not finding this out till right now but you can Pair your Phone to your Tablet, then in Settings hit Internet access via tether and Bam !!
Internet Access !! Not rooted
Figure I pass this along to those that dont know.. Free interwebs !!
Yup. 10char
Paired my galaxy s II to my tablet through bluetooth. I enabled bluetooth tethering but still can't get an internet connection. Under bluetooth settings it says next to the galaxy s II - Paired but not connected
you have to hit the little wrench next to it and go to enable internet access
hmm the wrench gives me -

Rename Device
Unpair
Pofiles
xxxxx being the name of my phone and nothing underneath profiles
if able to, use wifi tethering instead. BT slowestof tethering methods. but if wifi won't work, BT is better than no connection at all. Barnacle or Wifi Tether are good apps to use. phone with internet connection needs root for it to work. so o guess if your phone not rooted and BT tether works, its better than nothing. lol

easy solution then. if u rooted already, just Google the wireless tethering apk and Barnacle apk. and you should be able to tether over wifi without having to pay for the plan. as long as you have a data connection and don't go overboard on the tethering like doing huge downloads n such.
Yeah I know I can install the apk's and make it work but I am a little afraid of getting caught and losing my grandfathered unlimited data plan. I read once where they can see that you are tethering since the MAC address of the device using the data is embedded in the transmission or something like that.
Any Verizon phones successfully connected?
If you have a Verizon phone and can bluetooth tether please say which model you have. I unfortunately bricked my HTC Incredible trying to follow some convoluted process for downgrading and then rooting.
So, yeah, I have to get a new phone and would like to know which one I should get that will allow me to bluetooth tether without rooting.
BTW, I am getting really frustrated with Android and the tweaking, hacking, and manipulating just to get functions to work. I don't have an Apple bone in my body, but I envy them for ease of use.

I used wireless tether without any problem on my old droid X, but now I'm having connection issues. My Asus transformer can see my Rezound just fine and connect, but my in dashoard Galaxy Tab doesn't see it at all.
I've tried the current beta of Wireless Tether, 2.0.7, Barnacle, and Open Garden, all with the same results.
We need to nail down what specific settings those successfully tethering are using.
Please list the following.
1. What app you are using.
2. What settings you are using (device presets, clamping, ect.).
3. What you are successful in tethering wirelessly to.
I'm going to run a few more tests, and post mine.
I don't mean to ask a dumb question but these apps just allow you to use your phones 4g on a laptop, etc. ? Are they free if you have unlimited data?

According to wiki ad hoc needs the same channels to work. For the people that do have it working what channels are you using in ad hoc mode.
Definition
To set up an ad-hoc wireless network, each wireless adapter must be configured for ad-hoc mode versus the alternative infrastructure mode. In addition, all wireless adapters on the ad-hoc network must use the same SSID and the same channel number.

The problem is what devices you try to use to connect to your phone's mobile connection. I tried connecting with my Asus laptop (Windows 7) and it wouldn't connect correctly. I tried connecting with my gf's windows xp laptop and it works perfectly fine!
