tango does a swell job on video chatting over 3g. as well as yahoo IM.
I meant to say notmal video calls just selectine a contact from phonebok and making a video call. Not through any IM.
I am currently on AXURA 2.2.7.
Even on network bar screen I cant see any 3G or H symbol at all. my subscription is 3G and am to make this call on other OS fones. Please help.
Tango or Yahoo IM both work very well you need to have the other party you are calling signed up to those accounts. So what happens is you have a separate contacts list in tango or yahoo.............. then you can call them.

currently there is no 1st party video calling for android phone. probably the only 3rd party app that is lightweight and only requires both users to have the app and a quick sign up is TANGO. its cross platform between iOS and android as well. other apps include qik, fringo, yahoo im, cracked skype , and oovoo
actually no one understood me correctly.
I am not asking about video calling through IM. I am asking about video calling to a mobile or landline no. through my network. If anyone of u hav used Symbian or WinMo u ll understand this. where we can directly make a video call to any no. through network.
Could you please also let me know where I can activate deactivate CELL INFO DISPLAY

and im telling you your options. android does not have a 1st party video chat option...only 3rd parties...and so far the best lightweight vid chat app is tango...when you call them,it'll be just like a voice call thru data and there's a button on the screen to activate video chat.
You have a inbuilt option for making a video call directly over the network instead of IM networks. Have used it on my Galaxy S. Again the service has to be enabled by the operator.
i did not know this. more info please.
I second that.

Just curious but have any of you that own it overseas able to use Google voice or the like to make calls? Very interested if its possible
Sent from my HERO200 using XDA App
I'm pretty sure the only way you would be able to do that is if you used Skype to make and recieve all your calls. You would have to get a Skype number, then pay the $2.99 for unlimited U.S. calling. More conveniently you could port your cell number to Google Voice and then have that number ring your Skype number. Whenever you left the house you would just have to make sure 3G was on (so you would have to get it from Sprint). Also the mic on it is pretty bad from what reviewers are saying, so you would need a bluetooth headset.
Edit: Forgot to point out Google voice won't make calls over 3G, hence why you would need Skype.
Edit 2: And of course the battery is very good so it makes this setup very possible.
Please help
Very imp. for me; just to make sure, i own a samsung galaxy tab and i want to switch to the flyer, does it work as a cell phone like the galaxy? or not?
I don't have a Flyer, but it was mentioned multiple times that there is no such gsm voice functionality: you can only talk via Skype. Also, the leaked manual didn't mention voice via gsm, but sms/mms connectivity is available. Now's the question: can somebody patch voice into a Rom?

I have a Google Voice number local to my area code that forward to my pbxes.org account, which in turn takes the call and sends it to my phone via the SipDroid app. I can make incoming/outgoing calls all day long for free, but have a problem with call quality.
I have linked two voicemail files. I placed a call from SipDroid out to the same number in both cases, but one was done over WiFi and the other over 3G (2-3 bars, average signal). The WiFi one is acceptable, but the 3G one is not. Listen for yourself (For the message, I read one of the opening paragraphs from the US Declaration of Independence, same on both so you can compare accurately.)
Setup: Google Voice number -> pbxes.org -> SipDroid app
Wifi VOIP Voicemail: http://www.corusa.com/public/voip-wifi.wav
3G VOIP Voicemail: http://www.corusa.com/public/voip-3g.wav
Now, with that said you need to understand my intent. I am wanting to use my Google Voice number for work, as my off-hours support phone, so I do not accrue charges on my personal cell plan (not covered by employer, and they do not provide work mobile phones). So, since I am usually on the go, I will not be connected to WiFi, thus I need a reliable VOIP option that will get acceptable call quality over 3G. There are multiple options out there, and I do not have a problem with a monthly fee, but they all come with caveats. For example, if I got an "Online Number" from Skype, and just forwarded my Google Voice number to that, it would work through the Skype app, no SIP app needed; however, the Skype voicemail cannot be disabled, so I can no longer use the Google Voice app to easily see my support calls/messages from my home screen. I have use the Skype app (or website) to listen to voicemails. Skype would solve my quality problem (based on reviews of other users that use it over 3G), but introduce the new voicemail issue. The setup I have now (GV->pbxes->SipDroid) allows me to use the GV voicemail, but quality is lacking...catch 22. Is there a better more reliable solution out there for VOIP on Android? I am fine with paying
There's also the Google Callback app, that I have been trying to avoid at all costs, since it is kind of hokey, and I tried the GrooVe IP app, but it has a lot of echo for the person I am calling, and no setting change could fix it.
p.s. - I will be updating my phone from the DroidX (3G only) to the Bionic (4G). If you think that will make a difference, and make all my concerns moot, then just say so, and that's what I'll do
Thanks!!
Since you mentioned GrooVe IP, figured I'd respond. Did you try the echo canceler setting in the GrooVe IP audio/echo settings? Enabling that should get rid of echo heard by the person you're talking to. And/Or reducing the mic gain & speaker volume.

Viber is not a true VOIP solution, as you can only call other people using the Viber app. Here's an excerpt from the Viber FAQ...
Q: Can I call people who don't have Viber?
A: Yes, if the person you're calling doesn't have Viber, the call will be placed like *regular call, but don't forget to invite your friends to Viber so your next call is free . *Regular calls are calls placed through your cell phone service provider, using your cell phone rate plan.
That's pointless...I need to call any phone number (land line, mobile, cell, work, etc) in the USA from my Google voice number using only a 3G/4G connection. I really need to find that one or two providers that use a low enough bitrate for voice that can work fine on 3G without being echoey or choppy (this is why I posted the 3G sample voice-mail above). I would just install the Google Voice callback app, but I do not have a 'Friends & Family' option for my cell plan to add my GV number to, which is essential for that to be feasible.
Is this really not something a lot of people have dealt with? I know I am not the first person in the world who has tried to call via VOIP over 3G - the technology has been around forever. Anyway, still need an answer if anyone has one

I'm also an early adapter of GV voip service.
I'm using Dell streak 7 (dual core 512 mb ram, horrible software config, honeycomb 3.2)
I manage to have stable voip quality with clear portable 4g hotspot connected through wifi. Unlimited calls and data, pretty cool. However, talking through a bluetooth device and 3GHSPA+ have been horrible. My friends keep complaining about bad call quality until I find this issues. If calling through wifi (I use groove ip) with internal mic and speaker, everything is fine. I guess it's either due to bad hardware coding of the streak 7 or due to the narrow bandwith of the bluetooth 2.1 or 3G. I'm not familiar with the tech details of streak 7.
I'm gonna try the new nexus 7 and sony xperia z ultra to see if any issues above can be solved.
i don know if anybody know this or this, if anybody already do please dont trash talk because there r a lot who dont, also the old sipdroid stuff that we cant get anymore... atleast for free... there is a app called viber on the market that lets u call over wifi.... u will need to install viber first then install another app called viber addon which is also free..... i have been able to make calls from the basement at my school where there is no signal at all... also i put my fone on airplane mode then turned wifi on without sprint's voice or data n was able to make calls.... im not taking any credit or trying to trash the forum here just thought some of u might get some use out of it.... enjoy...

Calls to non-viber through the addon are free for the first few calls but eventually you have to buy credits... just like you would with skype. The call quality isnt that great either.
I bought a program called grooveip I kicks ass. It works with your google voice account.

Actually I think GrooveIP uses your Google voice account and makes calls via Data (wifi/3G/4G etc..). I'm not sure as I use Gvoice dial and it works many wonders for me in call quality and free calls to friends in the U.S.A.

I have used grooveip its okay. Better then nothing.
GrooveIP actually works quite well, so long as you leave the setting alone. I tried tinkering with it just to play around, and I ****ed it up so bad I had to uninstall it completely and then reinstall. I use it strictly on WIFI and I make it a point to ask people how the call quality is, and they have never had an issue, unless of course the wifi sucks...then you are assed out.
I went so far as to completely cancel my voicedata connection, if Optimum WIFI in enough locations and almost every retail shop having wifi now...no reason so pay anymore
obihai free andriod voip
plus you can use it at home and get free phone through google voice.
Is there Any app that let's you make Unlimited calls over WiFi to Non users of whatever the app?

samsung galaXy S can ... refer this link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0i5q-UMfug8&feature=related
so why can't other..xperias, nexus..etc
may be we can make samsung Glxy s (video calling).apk modified to//
and the final
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=2664#c182
and finally all we are requesting to develop a app for native video calling over 3g(no data )
No offense, but did you really read all those links you just posted??
1) Android by itself doesn't have native video calling
2) Only Samsung added native video calling to THEIR version of Android
3) Even if you had native video calling your carrier has to support it and give you access to that service, it isn't just an automagical thing
4) According to what I've read (but I may be wrong), video calls over data network are much better and cheaper than 3g video calls
So, there's no way to make a "native video call apk", because it's a much deeper issue, you would need to modify the phone framework and add A LOT of things (which is no easy task).
Even if you had that, that won't work for squat if your carrier doesn't support video calling, I know for a fact that no carrier in the U.S. (and probably no carrier in America, the continent, not the self-absorved country does).
You can read more from a technical standpoint here (there's a whitepaper and all).

Agree 100%,here native 3g calls are lot cheaper than data charges. Besides how am I supposed to give a video call to someone who own a phone like SE C510 ? non-smartphones don't have apps like skype to video call via data :/
I really hope SE will add native 3g calls in ICS,cos without this front cam is useless for me :/
paying 290$'s for phone with front cam and there is no way to give a 3g call to my gf and family is kinda pointless

I have gone through all the links out of interest. Surely many are not aware of 3G video calling (non data).
Google is purposely not using native 3G video(non-data) calling because it wants to promote Gtalk, third party companies apps, and use of internet plans. Same with Sony etc. Extra revenue is their main aim.
But what's the use ? All other chat-apps offer video calling via data. People will slowly notice this cheating business.
So google should introduce it by themselves in their new and old versions by default, or people will move on to other phones.
I also request the XDA friends to create a customised app/Rom which can be easily modded and inserted in any rooted android phone.
We dont want cheap or costly simply we are askinh about can we make a video call like a audio call through service provider without any help of wifi or internet.
We want call like nokia n73 or samsung grand prime u can make a video call trough dailer and its cost like audio call per socond.

erm, maybe you can try viber? It has this feature though(although I've never used it)
Google Voice is free for calls in the US and possibly Canada IIRC. If you set up your Google voice number to not forward calls, and use the GrooveIP app. The Lite version will work fine for wifi only, but if you want to use 3G or find the app useful and want to support the dev while getting extra features, get the paid version.
Can you call numbers too or do you have to have the contacts themselves like skype?
Google voice is NOT a VOIP service, just a call forwarding service. You might want to give this thread a look.
:Edit: I didn't read spunker88's reply thoroughly enough. The thread I mentioned has a lot of information about setting up VOIP as he recommends.

Yes, you can call any US number, landlines or cell phones using GrooveIP which uses your Google Voice account. The app itself is done pretty well, it acts as a dialer and allows you to dial your phone's contacts through it.
Just be aware that this with this setup you'll have a separate phone number and you'll have to leave GrooveIP running while connected to wifi in order to receive calls.
