Samsung vibrant getting froyo tomorrow - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Okay so I am running a rom on my samsung vibrant and I heard that froyo is being pushed out OTA tomorrow. What do I have to do to get back to stock so I can receive the update. Or will I even be able to receive the update.

I would assume odin to stock jfd then to ji6 should be enough to receive the update. I wouldn't try and update from a custom rom (that would almost assuredly result in a softbrick). Also I wouldn't hold your breath. Wait till tomorrow to find out the truth and worst case scenario I'm sure the update will be packaged into a cwm flashable zip or odin tar file soon after release.

I asked the same question in the General section, got a few very good answers.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=922008
Bottom line, it is not safe to try to DL the OTA if our phone's somehow even are able to receive them. Some people have said if you are rooted, but have no custom ROM then you might be ok.

Samsung sent its base 2.2 upgrade to T-Mobile in late November after stating "SOON" back in JULY (4 months is not soon folks, 4 days is SOON) and now T-mobile after being forced to speak-up that they have had it for over 7 weeks. Guess CUSTOMER angry postings got their attention to lie some more, wifi calling has been out for a very LONG time at XDA (keeping with their model not to say the specific amount of time). FIRE THIS GUY and maybe Management will wake-up, if it does not hurt, put fear in the folks deciding, they will not do anything until it effects them. If we keep protesting MAYBE heads will roll and they will stop treating customers so poorly.
Definition of "soon" (adverb) = not long after the present time; quickly. BTW, adverbs often tell when, where, why, or under what conditions something happens or happened.

I really hope they will improve the signal strength!

So if i only rooted (was about to try other roms) will i need to un-root for the update?
I read somewhere that you only need to delete a file or two on / directory to unroot, but cant find that thread... anyone know what im referring to?

Meh, I'm happy with the update. I'll flash the new one when it comes out too, but this is running smoothly for me.

Of course, it's better. However, you'll likely have to flash back to stock 2.1 JFD as I'd expect to you won't be able to update directly from JI5. Even the JI5 update forced people to do that (for example those that were on JI2 / JI4), I'd expect more of the same. There are those who have no problem doing this and that's fine. I'm just warning those who aren't / might not be.

Fine there are Odin official tmobile images over in bible sticky and take a min to flash
Yea you lose programs settings ...ect but IMO its better to start from scratch when using new updates. And not run into intermittent and compatibility issues like what seems to be going on now with allot of people
but yea this update works great no problems whats so ever for me

Thanx, but I sorta needed that working GPS last week, not soon. Besides, "soon" is such an evasive term.
This makes me recollect the June 8th outing of a policy statement by Cole Brodman, Chief Technology Officer @ T-Mobile titled "No Phone Left Behind". It was in regards to assuring owners of the HTC Mytouch3G that they'd be receiving a Froyo update.
Nearly four months later and zip for the MT3G from Tmobile or HTC.
Maybe I'm wrong as my knowledge of timelines is from the inside of my addled head, but I do not believe T-Mobile has had a successful OTA of *ANY* Android phone in their stable this year at all. It's not the most encouraging development. (I do recall the Behold II 1.6 OTA, but it was eventually pulled for bricking phones....and led to me getting my Vibrant for free from T-Mobile before the official Vibrant launch...long story).
Granted, T-Mobile does not develop firmware, so they are at the mercy of the phone manufacturers. Still, if there's any issue that is at the core of Android angst, it is this one.
Just so I don't come across as a troll, I love my Vibrant. Compared to the Behold II I had and every other smartphone I've had it's leaps and bounds ahead of them all. I just get irritated when P.R. and "spin" get out of control...
Of course, this thread was a warning to the people who hadn't yet flashed JI5 / Kies and were still uncomfortable with doing it. Obviously, it's not people who are (already) comfortable. Knowledgeable people are certainly free to ignore and flash away.
This is BS. T-Mobile... how soon is soon? How long have we heard there would be an update to the MyTouch? I cannot and will not wait around for them to OTA anything. I will be very shocked if I get an update in the next month. I know i sound a little pessimistic but who wouldn't?
This is nonsense, installing this update does not prevent me from ODIN to any other firmware. I went directly from JI4 to JI5, so whoever said that I cannot do that is very confused.

That's because you ODIN flashed it.
Kies looked for the JFD product code, then gave you the option to update.
Lol how ironic that they don't want you to flash the firmware because it has 'known' issues. But the firmware on it has bigger issues so hmmm

OTA could brick it just as well. Would it be Samsungs first OTA update for Android or the first OTA ever?

True. I'd like to think the probability of bricking over OTA would be lower. Since it would be an official update they'd also likely be / feel more obligated to provide whatever support they wanted to.

Flash back to 2.1

Can someone lead me to the files I need to flash my Fascinate back to 2.1 from the Froyo update. I'm not sure what files or Odin i need to do this. I'm having an issue with my 3G disappearing and dropping since going to the OTA froyo and never had problems with it on 2.1 so i'm trying to go back to stock 2.1, maybe even try to goto Froyo again [maybe something got corrupted or something]. Before i got about getting a new one, i'd like to see if I can flash back to 2.1 and get it working again.
There's a stock package that you can use to Odin back to DL09 (eclair) here. That same thread gives an easy way to get back to froyo if you want to try again.
Alternatively, if you're just having connectivity issues, you could simply try another radio. Some people have a better time with DL09 modem, at least compared to EB01 and EC01 (not sure whether anyone finds it better than the current one), and you can Odin just the modem here. You might want to try this first and see if it does the trick. DL09 modem works fine with leaked froyo releases, so it should be okay with the official one.

Which should I try, im kinda new to this, so far its lookin like i'm going to have to get a new phone. It makes me angry cuz it worked perfectly fine on 2.1 then when i updated, now the 3G just disappears randomly

Do you think changing the radio version or whatever will fix my problem here. I mean in my search to find out if anyone else has been having their 3G randomly disappear i havent see to much report. I just dont get how it was working fine with 2.1, once i installed froyo it started this problem, now im flashed back on 2.1 and it seems still "broken." Even the Verizon techs had no idea what was going on with it when i took it in. I mean can software screw up the hardware?
I was told by a Verizon rep that they knew that this OTA update would cause this problem in a certain percentage of devices and they just sent me a new one. The second in 2 weeks. When I went in and complained they just went straight to the computer and ordered me a new 1 both times, no ?'s asked really. Just hope you're still under warranty.

[Q] Verizon Fascinate Gingerbread Release -- When?

So I have the Samsung Fascinate on Verizon using radio ED04 on Froyo.
I get calls that come in with no indication. I don't get all my text messages. I once got a voicemail 2 days after it was left (this may be an actual rare fluke and not linked to the main issues with the phone). Sometimes I get no indication of text messages until I un-sleep my phone (maybe a random coincidence in timing).
It's getting annoying, BUT it's not annoying enough yet to take the time to learn about flashing and ROM's and radio changes and the like.
My current questions are...
1) Do you think Gingerbread is going to fix these issues?
2) When do you think Gingerbread is going to be officially released on Verizon for the Fascinate?
2a) Do you think it's going to run into the same issue the Froyo release had for the US?
Hm, I have ED04 and I don't have that problem...

Well lets see, we got a bunch of froyo leaks and it took about 3-4 months for vzw to finnaly release Froyo. We just got a gingerbread leak, I say another 3-4 months.
Hey, there's the unofficial EC09 leak, and a couple of De-B'd (de-binged, de-bloated) ROMs based on it. You could try those if you don't mind potentially frying your SD card, not being able to play video or auto-rotate your screen, and generally having more force closes than Darth Vader
Another Fascinating post by my XDA app...
You could try following the instructions here (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1132236) to flash the EC09 modem by itself (since modems are independent of the ROMs, you shouldn't run into the problems with the EC09 ROMs).

It does turd. Day 4 here and I'm currently RSDing right back to stock then onward to .173
Couldn't take the following anymore:
Pull down curtain becomes TOTALLY unresponsive at random times. Hot reboot required to fix.
After dialing a phone number, talking, hanging up and the going to make another call, the previous phone number I dialed is there causing me to dial a 20 digit number
Google Voice notifications do not stay in the curtain. They notify then automatically get deleted.
WiFi connectivity drops out random, dconn and reconn to fix.
Prepare for De-Turding!
...and now you know, folks, why we're apparently getting another Gingerbread update prior to ICS. Development can be fun, but be certain--Motorola knows what they're doing.

Personally, I've been very content with GB. When I started seeing all the ICS leak posts, I got curious and thought, "why not?"
I've tried it, and actually thought the leak was very nice. However, I felt better going back to stock for now as it looks like a new GB OTA will be released soon, and hopefully ICS not too far after.
Really liked what I saw in the ICS build.

Everyone on the leak will begin to experience what I did. It's unlikely, but possibly, that I have a defective phone, so it'll happen.
I did do a factory reset, full wipe etc. and everything was incredible for about 4 days. Then as someone else so eloquently put it, ICS started to "Turd" on me.
Once it does that 100 times or so, you start thinking about "DeTurding" which is you're only option.
sadly, ICS isn't ready, nor will it be if we wait on Motorola.
Devs, start your threads! I'm willing to pay you to finish ICS!
Any chance you have a link to the files?

the cool thing though, is that we have "the" ICS base including kernel to build off of.. granted, we can't make many kernel tweaks beyond what's 'allowed' w/ a locked bootloader, but I believe having an ICS kernel directly from Moto will help w/ the CM9 builds etc..
Lots less to go wrong w/ having proper drivers etc. to work off of.
(hopefully anyway)
EDIT:.. I just fastbooted back to .173 and all seems well
I just installed ICS today, and I haven't experienced any of these problems at all. I'm curious as to how many of you factory reset after the install? Everything I've read says factory reset after install does the trick.
I absolutely love ICS! (but I'm glad to hear RSD works if I DO run into any problems)

I was trying to fast boot back earlier today and it it would get to the 5th item of flashing and give me an unknown error and fail. Luckily Matt G was able to flash back the 4G radio for me. He mentioned deleting the OEM lines will clear the errors.
I am not the greatest when it comes to command lines and all that junk. I have only ever used his utility but 1.5 wasn't restoring the 4G either. Now I have 1.51...
Is RSD just simply download the file, select the "uncompress and flash" or is there some other modification needed to flash the file?
Just hoping someone with a bit more know how can chime in.
*UPDATE:I re downloaded everything and it worked. Must have just been a bad DL of the RSD File.

As some of you have already noted, an update is available for the Samsung Galaxy SII.
The update includes fixes for devices that may become unresponsive and/or power down while sitting idle on rare occasions. It also enhances security to protect against malware vulnerability. You will receive a notification on your phone to update.
NOTE - You must have updated to Android version 4.0 to receive notification of the new software update

There's at least as much cya and marketing motivation involved as anything else.
I previously rooted and flashed Siyah 4.3.3 which resolved my issue with the sleep of death. This seems to prevent this new update from installing as when the phone reboots it shows the Siyah boot image and then boots back into the OS, when I unlock the phone it tells me that the update failed to install. I'm not in a hurry to install an update that resolves something I've fixed through other means, but I thought I'd share for those interested.

This has been happening to me for the past few months, on more than "rare occassions" though. I never knew what to call it until I saw people on here refer to it as Sleep of Death. Yep, sounds about right. And it would rapidly drain my battery when it happened.
I've successfully updated, so hopefully this will take care of it. It gets VERY annoying! And all the much worse since I use my phone for my alarm, haha. I have my wife's as a backup though.
Anyone pull the modem yet?

I'm only a curious now, about whether this fixes the SOD. After hours on the phone with ATT and Samsung, and a few factory resets and a new phone, it was still doing it. And each time I called them about it, they'd say they were not aware of such a problem. Anyway, not an issue anymore for me, since going to Task's AOKP ROM, which got me so many better features than an ATT update ever would have - warranty or no.
The only reason why this OTA was pushed was because a ton of users were posting this issue on the ATT forums for 4 months straight. Even then ATT pushes an OTA for 4.0.4 instead of using one of the many 4.1.2 firmwares from Samsung.

My understanding is that it is up to Samsung to produce the firmware, and because it's a carrier-branded device, I have a hard time believing that they'd do that unless instructed to.
Really? You think Samsung is the one making the decision? Its really the carrier.
Can someone pull the modem from this update? Pm or post a download link once extracted please.
