Hey everyone-
I believe this question has been posed before, although not for the specific update arriving tomorrow. I was wondering if I should flash back to stock to receive the new update? For some inexplicable reason I really want to receive this puppy directly from Magenta itself, perhaps because its been such a long time coming and I want to see that sweet update option in the settings menu actually work for something. Thanks for your help in advance.

To be 100% sure to that your going to get the ota update you should not have flashed a custum rom. But to have any chance of getting an ota yes you should return to stock. I would just wait and grab a flashable or tar version off here when it comes out.
Fear the beard...
How would returning back to stock give me any less chance of recieving the OTA than someone who hadn't rooted and flashed a custom rom on their phone? Unless t-mobile can somehow tell the difference wirelessly between a rooted and non-rooted phone. Just curious, thanks.
Are you currently running a ROM? Yes? Then you're not missing anything. Trust me, wait for the devs. If they get source then you'll be flashing updates by tomorrow night. Pretty sure the stock release will be behind the curve anyway; that or it's KA6... Imo.
Yeah, tbh the nero v5.something ROM I'm running now is probably miles better than the new stock update anyway, lol. If only samsung would actually partner with these devs unofficially to help spur along development. Sighhhhhh....
Patience bobo.... Patience.
U guys r idiots. Sorry for saying that I'm tired of people saying neros better than official.
No its not.
Neros based on a ecalir base, with froyo leaks from samsung.
If there was a official these roms would go from fast to HOLY ****!
Samsung is needed.
Devs modify.
Samsung creates.
To be sure to receive the update, Odin back to stock JDF or JI6. However if you already flashed, probably you will get it faster if you wait for the download link tomorrow, I bet you it will be up before night.....
It is probably the KA6 release anyway, that was posted here Yesterday

Chill the fudge out mayn, You cant even say that yet. Yeah Nero is based off of eclair and what? TW did more with eclair than samsung has. Besides, for all we know samsung is still implementing their RFS file system. Samsung creates source. that is all.

I have done root, clock mod, AP mod, and changed the boot animation. The reason I was asking is I was just curious so I would know if I will get the OTA updates.

What you asked previously was "STOCK" firmware. If you haven't flashed a ROM then you're on "STOCK" firmware but you did modify some parts of it with MobileAP so I don't know how that would play about.
Simple Solution.. its on the stickied post
IF I ROOT, WILL I GET OTA UPDATES?
Yes. Rooting will not prevent this, unless you flash a custom ROM that will block receiving the OTA update. If you do receive and download the OTA update, you will lose root. Typically within hours of the OTA becoming available, thanks to some fine XDA folks you can get the update WITH root. You would simply need to download and flash the update like a normal ROM.

Even if you dont get OTA, you wouldn't want it anyway because OTA gives the update to people in GROUPS and not every single person gets the update at the same time. So you can get yours two weeks after the first batch got the update. When a OTA is released, somebody will post the link for rooted and non-rooted users to manually push the update. So there isn't a need for OTA. Just look around the forum for it when its actually out.

Yeah it just seemed weird asking if you have stock or not. It honestly doesn't really matter because in the end, you're still going to get the update even if it isn't OTA.. you'll just end up manually pushing it which is better than OTAing.

That's because for them its a chore but to justify it they get paid. Here, we do it because its something we actually ENJOY doing (well.. not all of us like to help people) and we're more enthusiastic.
I never deal with customer support unless its something out of my hands.
When you flash simple mods like MobileAP or a new Battery icon, will it pose problems when you update, say to Froyo in the future?

I can see how he can get confused. I was a little when I 1st started paying attention to the whole Android scene.
Stock could mean a few different things to different people.
1. Stock = NOTHING CHANGED period at all. not even mods.
2. Stock = Rom that shipped with the phone with a few mods
3. Stock = A flashed "true stock" rom
4. Stock = an Google Android STOCK rom aka AOSP
I still go by the saying that their is no stupid questions just stupid answers.
another thing, thanks for at least posting this in the correct forum haha. A lot of the other members get really PEEVED when they see postings in the wrong area.

I wouldn't think that it would cause any issues updating to 2.2 with mods like the battery icon. I'm unsure of the MobileAP though cause 2.2 has it built in. I would prob remove that to be safe before you update. I'm still learning too so lets wait till a more seasoned member could give ya a better answer.

2.1 has it built in too.. its just the U.S. versions of the Galaxy S has it removed because of the carrier.
Just think of "STOCK ROM" as the default ROM without any modifications. That's the best explanation of it.
Right now I am running stock vibrant software with the kingklick oc kernel, oncl, and stock 2.1 unlock screen.
My question is when froyo comes out (hopefully soon) will I be ok to install the ota update. Our do I need to uninstall the lag fix and other mods.
Thanks in advance.

You would have to change your kernel, and it's best if you do a wipe when installing any new rom, especially a new firmware.
Does a froyo update not replace the kernel?
I had a similar question. Stock, unrooted Vibrant.... I got the JI5 update last week over Kies. Then I read that T-Mo had said not to install it. Are the odds good that I will have to jump through hoops to get the OTA when it finally comes?

The odds are you will need to Odin back to JFD to get the update via OTA.
However the odds are also that you will find it packaged here ready to Odin before you get it via OTA. OTA's are pushed out in batches, not to every single phone at once, so it can takes days or weeks for an OTA to complete for every device.
If you're already here (and it appears you are), you will know what to do when everyone else here does.

I'm in the same spot as you. I've got a vanilla Vibe and jumped on that Kies update =)
It's a great update and fixed the GPS issue but regarding the OTA, I'm sure we'll find out what's going on once the T-Mobile updates start rolling. Fear not, you're in the right spot.

I've been around a while just lurking & learning. I've been dieing to root this phone (first android) but didn't want to do it and turn around after and return to stock for 2.2. It does look like we will have a rom before it comes OTA anyway.
I'm sure someone will take the Froyo OTA and make a Clockwork Flashable Rom if you dont want to ODIN. So hang tight and check back because believe me that as soon as the OTA goes out, it will be on a download mirror for all us in less than 24 hours.
Its a game.
They come out with something
The Devs make it flashable
They leak something

When the official 2.2 froyo DOES come out, will we all need to revert back to stock before the update if we have custom roms for example bionix rom. Thanks
Sent from my samsung vibrant using xda app
Usually someone here on xda will have a .zip file of the OTA to flash over any rom. But to get the OTA then yes you need to go back to stco.
Stock meaning the official JI6 since that is the most recent firmware update.

If you actually want to receive the update over the air? Yes.
The reality though is a bit more complex. Updates are rolled out in batches, meaning every phone will not get the update simultaneously. Given this, you are far more likely to get the update from HERE than via an OTA in anything remotely resembling a timely fashion.
With the strong likelihood that the above ends up being true (as it almost always is) the answer would end up being no. You're here after all, so take advantage of that.
^ pretty much exactly what I was going to say. Enjoy the custom ROM till we can get our hands on the offical.. someone will upload a stock froyo with root that you can flash just like you did your custom rom. Also, I'v heard really good things about Eugenes froyo that's in the dev. section... I'm patiently waiting, but for those really wanting froyo, seems like Eugene has a pretty solid build now.
Ok, so a couple questions just to make sure my Vibrant is ready to recieve the OTA and install it with no problems.
I'm running KA5, I will use odin to go back to JFD.
However, do I need to be on JI6 to get the OTA, or will phones with JFD get Froyo OTA also?
If you reccomend I install JI6, I can just use kies correct? Basically, Odin back down to JFD, then use Kies to upgrade to JI6, and wait for my Froyo OTA?
I just want to avoid all and any possible bricks that may be caused by me having installed custom roms and leaked roms.
Next question. Once I get the OTA, and it downloads onto my phone, how can I extract the download from my phone and save a backup copy of the OTA?
I wouldnt even go to the trouble man. I'm sure whatever rom you are currently running will be better than samsungs ota froyo update. Wait until some developers get a hold of the source so they can better their roms. It will be worth the wait i know it.
Prepare to wait as it is probably going to take weeks of staggering releases to roll out the OTA to everyone.

just odin back to jfd and then to ji6 and wait. i'm sure it wouldnt take long to get a system dump of the official froyo update. maybe like a day or 2.

Exactly man! Super stoked. Besides, regardless if they say the updates roll out tomorrow....They go out across different geo-locations...It could take days or weeks to even get it pushed to ones device. Just my 2 cents tho!
Im sticking with Nero....Im sure someone who gets the stock rom will dump it and upload for people to check it out without waiting haha

Agreed. Probably many though most likely because of user error rather than lack of sufficient testing by TMO / Samsung. There may be some legitimate cases but these should very insignificant in number. I doubt they went to XDA, downloaded it all the roms, mods, kernels, etc and said "Let's test it all! We've got the time." I can only hope that all involved from the JFD to JI6 update era have learned what not to do.

Not necessarily. There are advantages to moving to a custom rom. Look over relevant stickies (at the top of subsections), review the OP of roms, read user feedback, then decide.
I rooted and expected to go to a custom ROM at some point, but as of yet there has been no compelling reason to do so. With some minor tweaks (removal of bloatware, mostly) and the right apps, stock is working just fine for me. I'll wait until we have ICS source and some new ROMs based on it before I go custom.
Only reason to keep a backup is for showing people the before and after.

Actually until the download site problem is completely resolved, it doesn't hurt to root, then make a backup of the stock ROM to keep just in case. If you do need it, then you've got it, and it doesn't take that much space.
Yeah, considering how often download sites go boom nowadays, keeping a local backup is probably a good idea.
Not sure if this question can even be answered yet, but I too am looking to root, but keep the stock ROM. I just got my i777 4 days ago and am wondering, if I root... will that, in any way, change the upgrading process to official ICS (I'm aware I may have to re-root once I update)?
Once you start removing things after root you will probably not be able to get any official updates. This is true of the current GB update available for the i777 (KH7). Removal of bloatware will cause the update to fail.

Going back to stock is a download and Odin away.
Then you can go to the magical Official ICS that will probably not come out anytime soon.
I'm going to wait until the end of march since that is officially when Samsung says they will have it for the galaxy series. Now I know that doesn't mean squat what with carrier delays and all that crap that slows the update process down,
For what it is worth(nothing) an ATT manager told me he heard the 3rd or 4th, but If it's not by the end of "late first quarter" i'll be rooting. Just doesn't feel necessary right now since I just got this phone...by the time I get bored with it hopefully official ICS and corresponding root directions will be out.
