[Q] Flashing Rom and still being able to receive update tomorrow? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey, ive been flashing roms for a while now and now i'm on KA6, i'm pretty sure it's going to be the same rom that tmobile pushes over the air tomorrow and throughout the week. I just wanted to know if i'll still be able to receive the update if it does end up being a different rom? and if its the same then what...?

I don't think you'll be able to, you need to be on an official firmware to get it, I believe.
I'm sure someone will make a flashable version once it's out, though.
I'm running Nero v5, and I was thinking of going back to an original firmware, but meh.
We'll just have to wait and see.

yeah so if thats the case then we can just go to the forums and pick up the original firmware for the vibrant right

No, if you are on an unofficial you won't receive update.
And yes, once this is out it will def be made flashable and be here on XDA, you can be sure of that

krylon already has a flashable froyo official rom.
He found it on tmobile website, but isn't home so he said he'll do it later

Speaking from experience... .
Most likely you will not be prompted to apply the update. '
But if you do.... And Ive seen this happen to me, several things may happen,
1 - You will get a notification that an update is available but nothing happens.
2- You will get a notification that the update is available, you can apply it and you are on the official 2.2 FROYO TMO rom.
3- You get a notification you apply the update and you BRICK the device.. (use odin to restore)
4- You get a notification, you apply it but once your device reboots it reverts back to your custom rom.
All 4 circumstances have happened to me on a Stock Rooted Rom only, not on a custom rom such as Nero or any other great one out there..... Good luck.

Firmwire question.

Hey everyone I just flash the new T595UVJ14 firmwire from the developers forums, and I just wanted to know if I would still be able to get froyo update over the air when it become available, or do I have to flash it back to the stock rom?

Most likely the devs in this forum will have froyo ready for you before the ota comes out anyway. If they dont someone should have a flashable version within a day or so of the ota anyway.

Well an OTA of Froyo isn't coming anytime soon from the looks of it.
Regardless of that you have to keep in mind HOW these OTA updates are pushed. They're done in batches, so when an OTA goes live it could take anywhere from HOURS to WEEKS before your particular phone would be one of the ones in a given batch push.
In all likelihood you'd be able to get the OTA update here as a flashable recovery or Odin3 image long before you'd get it from the carrier.
Thanx for the response. I hope that when 2.2 froyo's out I should be able to flash it.
eugene has the froyo 2.2. check out his work on the development section..

When Froyo Arives... Will I be ok for the OTA update

Right now I am running stock vibrant software with the kingklick oc kernel, oncl, and stock 2.1 unlock screen.
My question is when froyo comes out (hopefully soon) will I be ok to install the ota update. Our do I need to uninstall the lag fix and other mods.
Thanks in advance.

You would have to change your kernel, and it's best if you do a wipe when installing any new rom, especially a new firmware.
Does a froyo update not replace the kernel?
I had a similar question. Stock, unrooted Vibrant.... I got the JI5 update last week over Kies. Then I read that T-Mo had said not to install it. Are the odds good that I will have to jump through hoops to get the OTA when it finally comes?

The odds are you will need to Odin back to JFD to get the update via OTA.
However the odds are also that you will find it packaged here ready to Odin before you get it via OTA. OTA's are pushed out in batches, not to every single phone at once, so it can takes days or weeks for an OTA to complete for every device.
If you're already here (and it appears you are), you will know what to do when everyone else here does.

I'm in the same spot as you. I've got a vanilla Vibe and jumped on that Kies update =)
It's a great update and fixed the GPS issue but regarding the OTA, I'm sure we'll find out what's going on once the T-Mobile updates start rolling. Fear not, you're in the right spot.

Thanks for the info.
I've been around a while just lurking & learning. I've been dieing to root this phone (first android) but didn't want to do it and turn around after and return to stock for 2.2. It does look like we will have a rom before it comes OTA anyway.
I'm sure someone will take the Froyo OTA and make a Clockwork Flashable Rom if you dont want to ODIN. So hang tight and check back because believe me that as soon as the OTA goes out, it will be on a download mirror for all us in less than 24 hours.
Its a game.
They come out with something
The Devs make it flashable
They leak something

Froyo 2.2 question

When the official 2.2 froyo DOES come out, will we all need to revert back to stock before the update if we have custom roms for example bionix rom. Thanks
Sent from my samsung vibrant using xda app
Usually someone here on xda will have a .zip file of the OTA to flash over any rom. But to get the OTA then yes you need to go back to stco.
Stock meaning the official JI6 since that is the most recent firmware update.

If you actually want to receive the update over the air? Yes.
The reality though is a bit more complex. Updates are rolled out in batches, meaning every phone will not get the update simultaneously. Given this, you are far more likely to get the update from HERE than via an OTA in anything remotely resembling a timely fashion.
With the strong likelihood that the above ends up being true (as it almost always is) the answer would end up being no. You're here after all, so take advantage of that.
^ pretty much exactly what I was going to say. Enjoy the custom ROM till we can get our hands on the offical.. someone will upload a stock froyo with root that you can flash just like you did your custom rom. Also, I'v heard really good things about Eugenes froyo that's in the dev. section... I'm patiently waiting, but for those really wanting froyo, seems like Eugene has a pretty solid build now.

[Q] Froyo Tomorrow! How to prepare the Vibrant?

Ok, so a couple questions just to make sure my Vibrant is ready to recieve the OTA and install it with no problems.
I'm running KA5, I will use odin to go back to JFD.
However, do I need to be on JI6 to get the OTA, or will phones with JFD get Froyo OTA also?
If you reccomend I install JI6, I can just use kies correct? Basically, Odin back down to JFD, then use Kies to upgrade to JI6, and wait for my Froyo OTA?
I just want to avoid all and any possible bricks that may be caused by me having installed custom roms and leaked roms.
Next question. Once I get the OTA, and it downloads onto my phone, how can I extract the download from my phone and save a backup copy of the OTA?
I wouldnt even go to the trouble man. I'm sure whatever rom you are currently running will be better than samsungs ota froyo update. Wait until some developers get a hold of the source so they can better their roms. It will be worth the wait i know it.
Prepare to wait as it is probably going to take weeks of staggering releases to roll out the OTA to everyone.

This! Wait for new kernels and ROM updates. I'm personally hoping for a voodoo/bln or bln/super I/O kernel... With source many more things are possible.

Exactly man! Super stoked. Besides, regardless if they say the updates roll out tomorrow....They go out across different geo-locations...It could take days or weeks to even get it pushed to ones device. Just my 2 cents tho!
Im sticking with Nero....Im sure someone who gets the stock rom will dump it and upload for people to check it out without waiting haha
Definitely do nothing. Wonder how many phones this will brick.

Agreed. Probably many though most likely because of user error rather than lack of sufficient testing by TMO / Samsung. There may be some legitimate cases but these should very insignificant in number. I doubt they went to XDA, downloaded it all the roms, mods, kernels, etc and said "Let's test it all! We've got the time." I can only hope that all involved from the JFD to JI6 update era have learned what not to do.

[Q] Flashing back to stock firmware [NottachTrix 1.3.1]

In anticipation of ICS coming out. as it was just released for the atrix 2. I was wondering how do i go about rolling my phone back to stock to get ICS or Can i just got straight on with an OTA?

1) wrong forum
2) no you cant get an OTA with nottach (use search feature to find a stock rom)
3) when an update is made available there is a 99% chance someone will post a CWM/TWRP flashable zip within hours/days.
4) use search feature to find things before making posts in the wrong forum.

Wait, what country is your phone from? There's different versions of the Atrix, but there's next to no visible differences. They can't take the same firmware without a fix.
Any blur based ROM can receive updates from Motorola. However, this is not a good idea if you have an unlocked bootloader since there is a high risk of hard bricking your device. This happened with the 4.5.141 update, and the same could happen again (assuming we ever get ICS).
The safest option is to wait until an ICS fruit cake is available.
