[Q] Fascinate recognized as CD Drive not Mass Storage Drive ?? - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Samsung fascinate
rooted
windows 7 with Samsung 64 bit drivers installed
back to stock DL01 and then OTA DL09 about five times today.
Here is the problem, when i mount my phone, intermittantly Windows 7 doesnt give me the pop up window that lets me view my sd card files. It gives me a pop up window with 2 choices:
Option # 1. View your files - this really doesnt let me view anything except 4 files one of them being a " Bootloader file "
Option # 2. Install Bootstrap Loader exe.
I have had my phone since september and rooted, rom"ed OTA"ed all of it and today this started happening.
When i look in Drives and Printers my phone is listed as a CD Drive and not a Mass Storage Drive.
Just curious if any one else has had this issue and what might have caused it to start happening.
I installed Samsung Kies earlier this afternoon but uninstalled it since it was pretty much worthless to fascinate owners and the U.S. isnt supported.
Any input would be appreciated. Thanks in advanced for any info.

have you tried re downloading the drivers from samsung.com? it worked for me.

This has been talked about in several places already. It is a common bug with DL09. The best solution is to flash one of adrynalyne's 1/18 test kernels found here. I hope this helps!
BTW: make sure it is one of the kernels with the cd fix

when im on 2.1 aosp, i have that same issue, to fix reboot with debugging enabled

Seems to be related to some new 'Media sync' option.
I did some playing around and the following seemed to let me 'mount'
the phones as before. ( But I dont like it. )
Hoping for some direction from Verizon tech on
a) what is media sync ?
b) how do I turn off permanently If I dont need or want to use it?
Unplug phone from usb cable.
Then on Phone... Menu...Settings..USB settings
Change to ' Ask on connection'.
then press home button.
Plug in USB cable.
When prompted...Press 'Mass storage'.
Now wait...wait..wait. Took about 30 to 45 seconds.
Annunciator bar should have usb symbol. Drag it open.
Press usb connected....Press Mount..
My laptop now recognized the SD card on E drive.
Copy files as usual.
When done...Open Anunciator bar and 'Turn Off' USB storage.

Media Sync is a mode that allows programs such as Windows Media Player and Rhapsody to access your SD card and copy over DRM protected music.

Thanks for this, it worked

not sure if it helps with the problems with 2.2 but whenever i had this issue on 2.1 this is what i did, turn off your phone with the usb cable in and turn it back on with the phone still plugged in. It always seemed to work for me

From your homescreen when you hit menu go to usb settings then make sure the little radio button for mass storage device is selected. That was my problem after the latest OTA from verizon. Also it takes like 15 seconds for it to all sync up.

i have searched these forums hi and low, googled, etc. still cant find an answer....
on djo5,dl09 i was able to plug my phone into the usb port in my car, then mount my sd card, and it would automatically connect and find my music and start playing it.
on either dl30, or eb01, i cannot get it to work.
it is very frustrating. everytime i try, (all different combinations debugging on/off mass storage/ ask on connect, etc.)
i get a "device connect failed" message.
does anyone else have this issue?
has anyone been able to get this to work?

Another fix when it shows up as a CD-ROM drive is to right click and eject. Seems to work every time for me.

Thanks your idea of reboot while still plugged in saved me. Tried every other idea with no cure.
Thanks for the post.

Just installed Superclean 2.6 and had issues. I tried ejecting the CD Rom device in Windows, but that didn't work. I changed the usb settings from Mass Storage to Ask On Connection and then tried it again. This time I received the Android guy asking to mount the drive. Yay! It worked! It does however show both a CD rom drive and the mass storage drive in Windows XP.
On another note, I found that if I plug in my phone without unlocking the password first it locks up the phone until I unplug the usb cable attached to the pc.

Make sure you are using a USB cable that has a good connection (like the original one). I bought some aftermarket cables, and while they are good enough for charging, I really think they fit too loose to keep a secure connection.

Thanks guys, this combination worked perfectly for me.

Just fyi, this is due to Verizon bloatware that has been inserted I to the kernel. Adrynalyne and company managed to flush it out of the Eclair kernel, but since we don't have kernel source code for the Froyo kernel yet, there's nothing that can be done at this time. When source is available, this will be fixed by our devs.

Touch Pro will not sync via USB...

Okay all. Usually I don't post and just lurk around here to find the answers to my issue. This time after reading 300 posts about Activesync and the TP my problem is still not resolved.
Up until last Friday I have been able to sync the TP with my computer running WinXP via the USB connection. I sync with my exchange server OTA but use the USB connection for file transfers. My computer won't recognize that the TP is even plugged into the USB now. It still charges, but doesn't do anything else. I've rebooted the machine and TP, reinstalled Activesync on computer, unchecked the "enable advanced network functionality" box, changed USB cords, verified that I have the correct three repllog.exe values in my notification queue, and even hard reset the TP. Still no luck. I would think that it's something to do with the computer except that I plugged my Mogul in to check and it synced instantly.
Does anyone have any more ideas why the TP would not be registering as connected? You all are amazing when it comes to stuff like this, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
uninstall the Windows Mobile-based Device from the
network adapters section of Device manager on the PC.
control panel -> system -> hardware tab -> device manager button
restart pc and plug in the phone via usb and select active sync.
also the reason this may work in your case is i have had to do this for a friend.
windows installed the general rdnis driver however each device has a different
instance installed and thus the one device can have a corrupted driver yet the
other works perfect.
i see that u used another usb cable, cuz once it happened to me that the cable would charge but vista wouldn't recognize my TP "unrecognized USB device" , until i changed my usb cable!
Well I finally just went to a friend at the Sprint store and he swapped me for another TP. The new one works perfectly with the same setup that the other wouldn't. I can only guess that somehow the USB connection on my phone failed somehow. Just wanted to post this in case anyone else may have this issue in the future. Thanks for the responses.
This problem has happened on a friends, as well as just happening to mine (about 20 minutes ago). The usual fix which seems to clear it up:
1 - Hook up phone to computer
2 - On phone, start ICS (Internet Sharing in Start -> Programs)
3 - Select PC Connection "USB" and Network Connection of any type (if Sprint stock ROM, I recommend using "Sprint")
4 - Hit the "Connect" soft-key (bottom left)
If you've never used Internet Sharing on the phone, your computer should install some drivers... Once that is completed, click the Disconnect left soft-key on the phone. Now disconnect the cable from the computer.
Close out ICS or soft-reset the phone.
Once the phone is back up, plug it in - it should work.
I don't know what is getting reset in the phone, but unless I connect with ICS, then ActiveSync will not connect whether I soft-reset or not.
The same thing happened with my phone.... I took it to the Sprint store and they even tried a hard reset. It worked once after that then again it wouldn't sync. So they just replaced mine.... It was like you said.... some malfunction in the phone itself.
Hope HTC can figure out why this is happening.
Touch pro not sync
I can sync with my Vista Laptop and my friends xp machine but not to my xp desktop. I have tried many different cables. Each time I try something new, I toggle the "enable faster data synchronation box on USB to PC on try to sync then off then try to sync.
I have tried to delete all the usb drivers and rebooted to let the computer put in a new set.
I have tried to delete all the non running programs in my device manager using view hidden files.....
I have uninstalled active sync and then reinstalled it.
I have hard reset my phone a few times to no avail.
I went and bought a blue tooth adapter so I could sync using blue tooth and this computer does not do a good job of recognizing the adapter, but it did recognize it the first time but, could not pair the two. my blue tooth adapter is now coming up as a an unknown device
when i hook up the phone this is the message i get:
USB not Recognized,
One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message....
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Kent
MCW junior member THANKS....
thanks so much, this worked for me I could not sync my tasks or calendar, once I did what you said here I did get and Error Code 67..then cannot connect saying remote party has ended this connection...whatever that means...but anyway it proceeded to start automatically resynching and walla..all of sudden my tasks and calendar were on my computer ....first time I was ever on this forum ....I shall continue reading and learning here...so appreciate your help...I love my HTC Touch Pro and have just figured out how to connect to my big screen tv with only an MP3 or the like cable...works beautifully...except picture on tv is not the clearest...I will work on perfecting that next if it is possible...
Then I want to figure out how to get the phone connected to my computer screen, just like I did to my TV...then your phone acts as a controller...it's so cool!!

Ok I just found a solution for this, at least under Vista.
Click Start > Settings > Connections (tab)
Choose USB to PC
Once I removed the check mark next to "Enable advanced Network functionality" and clicked OK, my PC immediately saw my TP.
Hope this helps someone.
so what does the faster syc option do?
Ok so I searched the internet and found the advice to turn off the faster sync option on the phone.
After trying everything else I figured what the heck..
So it worked.
(btw windows adds a dif driver rather then the window-mobile baised device driver... )
So what does this option do? What does it point to being the problem on the computer?
Thanks,
HA>!

yeah i was having the same problem...my cpu would just recognize my phone as a mass storage device... Read your solution. And it worked... Damn i feel like a moron should have checked. Thanks!
I am having the same problem except the enable advanced network functionality option is checked and grayed out so it can't be unchecked.
I am running a 6.5 rom...
Any suggestions?
Solution solved
If you go to Settings->Connections->USB to PC and uncheck Enable faster data synchronization.
You will notice below that it will say "(Clear this check box if ActiveSync does not recognize the device)"
Once I did this it worked perfect.

Think of this step as telling your tp to quick boot/sync if nothing between the device and the reciving pc has changed (ie: hardware, software etc.
Enables faster syncing and quicker connection and authentication between pc and WM device. Reason for unchecking this to make it work?, by hard-reseting or changing specfic phone information you've reset specfic settings that are registerd with your pc.
i was having this problem with my sprint tp2 and tried it and worked. wish i would of learned if before reseting my computer and losing some windows i had open and the hard reset on my phone and losing all my contacts now i gotta go back to sprint store to get them again.
Works on the Touch2
I had this problem, which was driving me nuts especially as it was intermittent. I found Dashrender's advice and followed it except for turning off "Enable faster data synchronisation". Brilliant, works perfectly, thanks.
But what are HTC doing putting something in the software that fouls things up?
I knew i wasnt loosing my mind!
I have been workn on phones for a while. And have just been freakn about these same Issues Sony vio with 64bit vista. Thanks for all the tips. only took 6 hrs of pain to figure it out myself.
I have a similar problem now with my USB to PC . i have used this usb cable for many flashes but now when I plug it in, my computer doesnt recognize the usb device. also TV-Out pops up on my phone too. what is that all about? i dunno what to do
just found this thread searching for why my tp2 wouldn't sync. somehow under usb to pc i had it set to disk drive instead of active sync. checked it and works like a charm, can even see it in my computer now.

[Q] HTC HD2 HELP! Phone does not recognize USB

Today i plugged my phone to the usb cable and instead of getting the usual connection option screen... nothing... The phone charges but no Data transfer. Did hard reset, still nothing.. now im stuck with the old firmware... any help plz?
might be the cable that you're using. i used before a cable that is not the original and the same thing happened to me, i.e. pc cannot recognize device.
Try Settings-->Other-->USB To Pc-->UNCHECK (enable faster data sync) this should help...
cable : original came with the phone (used to work up until b4 yesterday) also tried another micro usb cable that came with me N900 but still nothing.
I did the un-check "enable faster sync" still nothing
Did soft reset, hard reset using volume keys, and factory reset from phone setting itself. still nothing.. the phone charges.. but no data transfer.. its something to do with the phone because i tried multiple PC's the phone doesn't bring up the connection type option page

No harm in checking.Infact i faced similar issue once and the USB2 was disabled. It took me an entire week to diagnose the problem. These PCs have got a mind of their own and do mischievous things on their own without our knowledge.
But since its not working on multiple PCs,i am not sure. We'll hav 2 wait 4 a solution i guess...
hmmmm.. would a full system format and re-install be possible? and would it fix it? (talking bout on the phone)

SAME PROBLEM WITH HTC2 T0MOBILE
even on the boot loader screen, it charges but no USB stuck on serial.

PLEASE HELP
i can do nothing, HSPL or rom upgrade
the cable and the USB drivers are tested more than 100 times
Most horror problems I had with the USB sync have been down to not having the latest version fo Activesync from microsoft. Uninstall the old version thwen reboot - now download the 4.5 version which I think is the newest and last version they made (unless im out of date) and then reboot the machine, then connect up the phone - but not immediately after the machine has booted wait a couple on mins, Windows takes longer than it often appears to be ready to go. One your hard drive led flashing light has settled down it is probably time to try. Then see if it finds all the devices in your phone.
If it doesnt go into the control panel and double click system, hardware tab, then select device manager and see if there are any devices with a yellow sign with a "!" in them. If there are delete them and then unplug the phone and plug it back in again. It might get past some stuck things. If it doesnt see anything new on device manager theres a menu at the top and look for "scan for hardware changes" this gives teh device manager another look at what its got connected.
If that fails open up the USB section under in device manager - its got a little plus next to it, press that plus and it open up all the names of chips you have for your USB control on the pc's motherboard. Write down the numbers and go and get the correct up to date drivers for that type of USB and install them. Then try the process again. Sometimes deleting the USB drivers and just doing a "scan for hardware changes" again, will reset the USB drivers and start things working, however it can get tricky if your using USB mouse and Keyboard to select anything if you delete the USB, because thats what the KM/mouse relies on to control teh machine, so have a PS2 mouse plugged in if you can. If that fails I would suggest reinstalling windows as its probably knackered. It amazing how things start to work wonderfully on a fresh copy of windows.
I have been where you are! And tried every suggestion that was given here. It all came down to the cord. I actually went through 3 different cords before I found one that worked and found that by accident. I bought an external drive and that cord works. For whatever reason, that is the only cord that now works for me. I only use it for data transfers. i use the other cords for charging.

Unable to mount as Disk Drive

When I plug in my USB cable, it brings up the window to choose a connection type, Charge Only or Disk Drive, Charge only is selected as default, but it will not allow me to select Disk Drive and after a few seconds, the screen closes and the status bar show "charge only" ALSO the phone locks up, it won't let me do anything, except put it in sleep mode. It won't allow me to unlock it or anything. It still receives messages and notifications, but I can't do anything. I have to unplug the USB cable to be able to use the phone
Only have it rooted, no rom's installed yet.
Any assist would be greatly appreciated
You say it's rooted. If you flashed recovery, go into recovery mode and scroll down to USB Storage Toggle.
At least you can mount it from there temporarily.

Maybe it could possibly be an issue with your SD card, and it won't mount properly? As the other poster said, have you tried mounting as USB storage from within recovery? That's usually a sure fire way to get the sd card mounted. If that also fails, then try taking your card out of the phone and put it in your computer (need a card adapter), and check it for errors. I would probably also format the card to FAT32 and then try again. I've had sd card issues in the past, and formatting the card always seems to get rid of the issues.
Problem Solved. MUST READ!
Well when I got home, I plugged in my phone to my laptop with a retractable usb cable and it mounted fine.
So I grabbed the cable that came with the Phone in the box and it again didn't allow me to select Disk Drive.
So I am taking from this that the cable that was sent with the Evo can only be used to charge the phone. Strange....

Can't get transfer files to/from pc

Ok so here's the problem, when I plug in the USB cable I don't get any drives mounted on my Windows 7 PC. It worked when I got it on release day, I have no idea what the issue is now. I'm running stock everything.
When I go to USB Mass Storage in the settings and hit Connect to storage PC it says "USB is connected remove the cable." When I remove the cable it does nothing obviously.
When I hit the button without a USB cable it says "Connect USB cable to use mass storage." Plug in the cable, does nothing.
Any idea?

You can can also use Kies or another wifi file transfer app to remove the need for cables if you have a wifi set up.
I had to read the thread twice because i couldn't figure out why you didn't lay into the jerk that called you an idiot. Then I saw that you were the jerk. Very funny.
Another option is Airdroid in the Market. Lets you connect without cables.
Glad you got it sorted out. Reboot the phone and\or the PC usually fixes a lot of issues.
What you have to do is press connect as usb storage then plug the phone in. You can't have the phone plugged in and press the button to enable it.

Hey it's my old thread! Anyway I did it that way and any other way you could think of trying to get it to work. Then I remembered the second rule of troubleshooting (first being make sure its plugged in) reboot! And it worked fine after that.
Then for a chuckle I had to go mock myself.

USB connection doesn't work

Settings > Wireless and Networks > USB utilities > "Connect storage to PC" button > plug in USB cable
This used to work perfectly up until today, now it just doesn't work anymore and the "Connect USB cable to use mass storage" popup keeps showing even after I plug it in. I've tried on multiple computers and I tried restarting my phone, but nothing works.

Thats one wierd proccess for getting USB storage man. most would just plug it in and pull the notification bar down to click the mass storage mode icon thing.
but if your not getting a connection, USB port could be toast.
Simple search would've showed that.

If you really have a fried USB port, send the phone back for a warranty replacement. If you don't have stock firmware on it, there are guides to return to stock - haven't specifically checked, but I believe it's possible to do this entirely without plugging in if you are already rooted.

I bought the phone on ebay though, would it still have warranty?
Is there a part I can buy to replace it myself? It's definitely a problem with just the USB port, because if I fiddle with the charger it starts charging if I hold it at a funny angle.
Some people have had success cleaning the usb port with alcohol. That might help but not if a wire or solder joint is broken. If you do try alcohol, don't use regular rubbing alcohol (70%), too much water (30%), get the better (90%) or even better (99%).
If you don't feel like fixing it yourself, you can settle for finding a battery charging dock and get an extra battery. Also, if you need to place files on your phone, use dropbox, Kies wirelessly, or take out your SD card and use an adapter.
I bought a new USB connector and it's working now.

In Android 4.0x systems (Ice Cream Sandwich) and above, Google introduced a new file transfer protocol called Media Transfer Protocol (MTP), which may be set by default. The problem with MTP is that, while Windows explorer can see it, there is no drive letter assigned, so programs like Pimlical can not see the phone's sdcard. The Android operating system still has the capability of USB Mass Storage protocol, which does assign drive letters, as has been the norm in all previous operating systems. It may be possible to set the phone to USB Mass Storage through phone settings. If it is not possible to set the phone to USB Mass Storage through phone settings, then it is possible to force USB Mass Storage.
This behavior is governed by the system property /data/property/persist.sys.usb.config. This is a text file containing a single string. The settings are "mass_storage,adb" or "mtp, adb". Since this is a system file, it is necessary for the phone to be rooted, and then this file can be edited using a root file explorer. Change the text in the file to mass_storage,adb (without spaces), save the file, and reboot the phone.
