Hey All,
I've been looking for an answer for over a day now, but can't seem to find anything about my specific problem. Here's what happened:
I had flashed to ICS 4.0.3 on my Samsung Vibrant about a month ago and everything was working great until yesterday when I woke up to find the "Encryption Unsuccessful" screen on my phone. I did a little research to find out that there is a fix to this and to NOT reset the phone. So, I took the steps to ODIN the phone back to Stock Eclair in hopes that starting from the beginning again would be easiest way to fix the problem. The ODIN process finished completely fine (PASSED), but now when it reboots, I only get to the first "Vibrant" screen, then it shows the battery and spinning circle icon. Apparently it won't fully reboot. I've tried to ODIN it back to stock several times, and I keep getting the same results. I can get it into download mode and plugged into my computer, but that's about it.
From the posts I've read, it sounds like my phone might still be okay to recover since it does power up, but I can't seem to find a solution to get it fully back up and running.
Any help/recommendations would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance!
Maybe your JFD file is corruption. Check with your MD5 sum if there any error or mismatch.. Just give you an idea.BTW what Odin are u using. I recommend Odin 1.7 I stay away the older Odin or the newer Odin
You are screwed.
Sorry to tell you this but i had the exact same problem and found no solution whatsoever to fix the phone. I finally gave up and bought a Galaxy Nexus. You can try flashing Eugene's Unbrickable Froyo Rom which is flashable through odin as a .tar package along with the pit file. You might be able to fix it but i highly doubt it. I flashed Eugene's rom and got the same results as you described. By any chance did you click "Reset Phone" when the "Encryption Unsuccessful" showed up? If so well yeah your phone is pretty much paperweight as of now...until someone finds a solution. Like you i am also able to access download mode. So i guess there may be a way to fix your phone. Not saying it's impossible...hopefully someone finds a solution soon.
Here is the link to Euguene's rom: http://eb-productions.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=samsungsgs&action=display&thread=8
Good luck.
OP, what ROM were you running (specifically. Not just ICS 4.0.3-what is the name of the ROM)? Also what kernel?
Since you are not the only one this happened to, I would like to know the above and see if it correlates to the others that this happened to in the Vibrant section. I'll post the same in their threads too.
Check here out for a possible solution/workaround.
Replacement Vibrant Coming
Thanks for your recommendations/help guys.
I decided to go to T-Mobile and complain and they are sending me a replacement phone. Apparently it's still under warranty, so it won't cost me anything, and if my data is lost, then so be it...at least all my contacts will still be in tact through my Google account.
Merio - I did NOT hit the Reset Button when I saw the Encryption Unsuccessful screen. Before doing anything I did a little research and I found a forum here on xda that said to not hit that button, and tried to explain a way to fix it using the Heimdall One-Click. Basically it sounded like I'd be flashing back to a Gingerbread ROM. So, instead I just went ahead and tried to flash back to stock Eclair. The results of that were obviously not good.
Woodrube - I was running the Passion 13 ROM (ICS 4.0.3). Was really enjoying it until I got the Encryption "Screen of Death"
I don't know what Kernel it was, actually, I don't really know what a Kernel is...
Thanks again guys. Hopefully I'll be up and running on my replacement phone soon!
Last night I went to reboot into recovery and my phone now sits at the Galaxy S2 splash screen and won't boot up. Tried plugging it in powered off and it won't even go into charging mode. The battery picture just comes up and the little spinning wheel keeps going.
So Ive been trying for the last hour to reflash the phone back to stock using both Entropys return to stock guide as well as the 'How to return your phone to the store' guide too and no luck.
Heimdall of course as always just flat out doesn't work so I hooked it up to my laptop and ran Odin. Odin connects to the phone fine and the box turns yellow, but the minute I hit start, it just gives me this:
<ID:0/008> SetupConnection..
<ID:0/008>
<OSM> All threads completed. (succeed 0 / failed 1)
I even tried the one click ICS leak from Rootzwiki and the same thing.
I can get the phone into Download mode no problem but man I cannot get it to flash ANY of these rome!!
Any advice or should I just take it to an ATT store on the way home from work??
I got it around the second week of February so hopefully worst case scenario I can still exchange it..
Im at my wits end here, can't do anything with it!!
I had same problem with my sprint Gs2, I took it into the store they told me since I rooted they couldnt help me. But the guy said go into download mode and root it again, it will remove anything and everything off it. Idk if that's what you want though. It got my phone back up and running

Ahh forgot to add I can't get into Recovery anymore.
No clue what happened. I can get it into Download mode but not Recovery.
If I could've gotten into Recovery I could've just flashed my Nandroid last night and fixed it hehe..
ODIN requires Download mode, not recovery mode. If your phone can indeed go into download mode as you claimed, you should be able to flash any ODIN flashable ROMs.
Try flashing just a kernel with recovery

You didn't say what you were running before the problem occured. Or if you did anything just before. Need more information to be able to troubleshoot the problem.
You might try flashing Entropy's DD kernel only with odin. He has at least one tar in his DD thread OP.
It may be that one of the components, such as param.lfs is screwed, but it would be better to have more information first before just randomly trying to flash things.
You can find most everything you might need in the Download Repository.

Yeah sorry about the lack of info hehe! I made the thread about 20 minutes before I had to go to work and spent the hour before that trying to fix it hehe.
Anyways, I WAS running the ATT ICS leak that Task and Fenny packaged up with CWM. I WAS going to get everything backed up and attempt to move over to CM9 when it went to crap.
So far what Ive attempted to flash with Odin was the following with no luck:
Entropys 'Return to Stock' PDA.tar (the UCKH7_stock_odin with root)
ATTGalaxyS2Unroot_SGH-i777.tar
The leaked ATT Odin one click flasher from Rootzwiki (same results as using regular Odin with any of the above)
I did in fact also download the I777UCKH7-CL503881-Parts-NoBL.7z from creepys 'How to prepare your phone for return to the store' thread BUT..
The instructions tell you to unpack the 7z and then run the one click .exe inside but there is no .exe in the archive. Just the modem.bin, cache.img, image, factoryfs.img, and hidden.img. This would've been fine to try but of course Heimdall is every Mac OS users enemy and anytime I try to use the front end I get a 'missing firmware.xml' error and running it via command line just never connects to the phone.
Since Entropys return to stock package only has the factoryfs.img and zimage, sounds like I need to find a complete tar file that has all the other parts that creepy's has in it..
Last thing I did before going to work was updating the USB drivers on my Win 7 laptop to see if that would help, but since I can only use my laptop via Remote Desktop Connection from my Mac (display is dead) I had to do a Windows Update so I could get the laptop to restart (which I don't think you can do through RDC unless I missed it), and I had to run to work before it finished..
And I was STILL 10 minutes late hahaha!
So the laptop JUST got rebooted now that Im home, Im going to go see if theres also a newer version of Odin, and Im gonna go dig through the Download Repository and also check that Samsung Firmwares site to see if I can find myself a complete tar ball of the stock 2.3.4 firmware..
Ive got Saturday off finally so if I can't get it flashed and fixed by then I think Im going to bite the bullet and just take it to an ATT store and see if they'll swap it. Hopefully theres no 30 day policy, because Im pretty sure my Blackberry crapped out on me about 2 months in and they had no problem sending me another in the mail.. I REALLY wish I had my MyBackup done on my external SD card and not the internal one.. Gotta put another 40 hours into grinding in all my Zenonias to get back to where I was hehe..

At this point I don't know if anything will help heh.
All it will do is either sit on the GS2 boot screen, or it will go into Download mode.
Download mode though, no luck so far. Odin just won't flash it for some reason. It sees it, the COM port box lights up yellow, but the minute you hit Start, it just goes right to that error message I posted above. After this, I have to close both Odin and disconnect the phone and reboot it into Download mode.
I went through the Download Repo. Tried I777UCKH7-CL503881-Full.7z, and even the param.ifs by itself but everything just gives the same result. I didn't try Entropys DD though since I was running the stock ICS and didn't want to really mess anything up. Only thing I can think of left to try is flashing Task/Fennys CWM modded stock ICS kernel but after all this I doubt its going to work. I tried the stock rooted GB kernel earlier and it didn't bother flashing either.
Am I maybe connecting it wrong? I have the battery pulled and am going into Download mode by holding the vol buttons and connecting the usb cable to the laptop. I don't want to kill the battery power I have left as it won't charge now either. Basically I just fire up Odin, connect the phone and put it in Download mode, select my tar file and put it in the PDA slot, hit Start and go.. Should I be doing anything differently??
Whenever I've had a problem with Odin like that, it has always been that some partition got flashed wrong/partially/corrupted, and the only fix was to reflash the damaged partition. As long as Odin is seeing the phone, then it must be either a software/firmware problem or a hardware problem. I'm still thinking it is firmware, but it seems to be outside my experience.
I havn't been playing with ICS yet, but I have noticed that there have been a number of reports similar to yours, where people have flashed some flavor of ICS. This supports the idea that it is firmware. I have always understood that if the problem is firmware, and if the phone can boot into download mode, it can be recovered.
Yeah Im wondering if I should try flashing the PIT file I have for the phone, but I don't know crap about partitioning these things and didn't want to really mess it up.
Guess at this point its worth a shot. I was about to go sit and chat with the warranty folks at ATT (mines a refurb so Ive only got til the end of the month before warranty s up). Maybe Ill try the pit file and let Odin repartition the thing. I can't flash a firmware back onto it anyways.
EDIT: Holy crap progress.. I flashed the stock secondary boot loader with Odin (in the Bootloader slot) and that actually flashed. Now I just reconnected it and decided to try the ATT ICS leak one click from Rootzwiki and it appears my phone is now flashing!!!!! As long as my crap is still on the internal usb storage today is gonna be a good day hehe! Yep all is well so far! Phone just rebooted and its now at the ICS setup screen! WOOHOO!!! Crisis averted!! Thanks guys for the comments and help! Creepy thank you for reminding me we have that repository!!
Hi guys
I was using ICS LP7 3uk stock, rooted, basically i found it a bit laggy compared to gingerbread i was using and decided to revert back, but completely stock, and start again with gingerbread.
So away i went, flashed gingerbread, everything fine in odin, no problems, flashed, THIS IS WHEN ALL MY PROBLEMS STARTED,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Upon trying to use the phone, no problem, apps work, phone calls, messages etc, no probs, but when i go on android market, i started getting connection timed out, so i tethered up to check my speeds, and my what a suprise i got,
My speedtests on 4 different testing sites came back at between 4k to 6k a second, basically i am on 3uk and used to have speeds of 7mbps average and download at around 800kbps average, my oh my, what a drop.....
So i figured i did something wrong, when i flashed the gb i flashed with the .pit file.
Ive since flashed back to 3 different versions of ics, with and without pit, and nothing has changed, no matter what i do, i cant get a download at any faster than 5k a second, even the market is now unuseable, arrrgggghhhhhh.
What did i do wrong.
I wondered if anyone else has had this problem, or maybe knows a way to try and fix this, id preferably like to go bk to GB, completely stock, even if it means flashing a boot file which i havent done yet.
PLEASE help, this is terrible and my beloved s2 is choking to death on its own vomit..............pretty please.....
Try a different modem.

Hey chaps just to update you, ive fixed it, 3 hours of research lead me to believe something was sadly wrong with the structure of the files on my phone after flashing the .pit file, morale of the story, LISTEN TO WHAT YA TOLD ON HERE AND STAY THE FU** AWAY FROM THE PIT FILE....
JEEZ man, ive been around long enough to know better, and frankly these people making posts telling ya to flash their firmware with the pit file shouldnt be doing this, oh well.
That was the problem, basically, flashing the pit somehow managed to erase some files from my efs folder, very odd, but the research lead me down that path, thankfully, i did listen like a good boy when i was told to backup my efs folder, so, i restored the folder, rebooted and factory wiped and now all is well, totally bizarre, so i guess it was a soft brick, boy was i panicking, my new shiny pebble blue S3 doesnt arrive till saturday, screwed if im flashing that, ill root it and leave it as is.
Anyway those that replied or took the time to contemplate my issue, many thanks, and yer, i am a **** and i dont mind you telling me so, it is my own fault for flashing that pit, and i ended up in a deep pit, so Noobs, DONT do what i did.
Hi Guys,
I have been scouring the boards and the internet on a solution to this problem.
GF had the phone and put it to charge.
Picked it up sometime later and it was off.
Turned it back on and it was stuck in a bootloop.
Phone was using Stock Firmware and was unrooted. It was running Jelly Bean 4.1.2. The EXACT firmware eludes me.
Phone is able to go into Download mode and recovery mode.
I have included a picture of what recovery mode looks like. [pic]
I tried flashing via ODIN. I tried different firmwares. All of them stopped at Boot.bin
I tried Kernel flash via PDA and it stopped at "NAND Write Start!" and just stayed there.
I tried flashing a bootloader and the progress bar appeared (only time it ever appeared) but it stopped after a little budge and did not move again. Not even after 30 mins. [pic]
Is there anything else I can do? I followed all the tips from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1449771 and I'm still here. Any insight would be appreciated. Thank you.
Hopper8's "Odin troubleshooting' thread. Find it, try the stuff in it. All of it. Not just try a few things & then post here saying 'I tried everything' when you didn't. The only thing that will happen if you do that is you'll still have a busted phone. And you need to try the stuff in that thread repeatedly. Over and over. As many times as you need to.
That's the only way you're fixing it (the alternative involves paying a Samsung service centre a considerable amount of money to fix it). There are no easy/simple fixes in these situations.
Im pretty sure I was in exactly the same situation a while back.Youll need to look back at my posts as Ive forgotten exactly how I fixed it.
It did involve GB and pit files via odin as nothing would flash by recovery.
Im on 2.3.5 as that was about the only thing that would flash properly and make the phone boot.I initially thought I had a bootloader problem as ICS/JB wouldnt load.
I spent 5 hours on that, and cant recall if it was the pit or the special 2.3.5 rom/or both that fixed it.

Thanks. I'll search your posts.
I think I posted a pic with similar errors to yours,so look and compare them.Theres not much info floating around about our/your problem.Pit files are only meant to be a last resort option, and I was in that category.
I also think that most/all things I flashed with odin passed, but phone would not boot, which led me to flash 2.3.5 combined with pit file.
I can't find your posts.....
Im only commenting because Im pretty sure its nothing to do with odin,I feel my phone and maybe yours has a hardware problem.I done a search before and only saw 1 situation like mines on another website.
For me,there was something major wrong for my phone not to accept ics/jb stock firmwares.
I have posted a pic before with the errors, and commented what I done to get the phone working.
I also dont think anyone on here can help,as it was the worst thing to fix Ive ever came across, and its not been mentioned on here.
Its up to you what you want to flash, but my moneys on a frankenstein GB rom c/w pit.Only try it at your own risk,or wait until someone else has alternative advice.

So I flashed the pit file.... and nothing happened. It just stopped there at "DO NOT TURN OFF TARGET!!!" I eventually closed ODIN but the phone still behaves the same way. If the EPROM is damaged, it won't have a partition to partition right? Any other suggestions?
I tried to flash CF root. Just to try anything. If hung up after kernel flash. Not it says I have a custom binary. Count 1. I don't know if that is relevant but... it shows something.

Youll need to ignore half of my previous advice(about odin),and follow Mistahbungles advice.......as my memory is playing tricks on me.Also,it was the other way around in my case.....ICS/JB flashed ok,it was GB that wouldnt(but doesnt matter here).
You have a damaged partition table,so that hopefully will be fixed by flashing .pit using Odin.If you cant get Odin to work, you could try a friends pc,or see if a local shop has Odin working.
Apologies to you both for my memory.........lol

I did try his advice and with 6 different versions of odins on two different laptops with 6 usb ports between them. I don't think ODIN is the problem. I think the problem is a corrupted NAND. It is so corrupt that it did not accept a .PIT flash. It didn't hard brick the phone. It did nothing to it. I am unsure what else to do.
Well maybe I was right all along about odin, but that doesnt help anything.
I cant remember if I could do anything via recovery, but I do remember that several things I tried just kept giving that page of errors.
Youll just need to google each error and see what it throws up.Stuff thats said ranges from removing sd card to replace recovery(but by odin which you cant do).
