[Q] i need the devs help - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

im having a problem that i dont know how to fix
this what im working with nero 5 with the ka5 baseband
i know that this forum is for dev stuff but i wanted the pros to walk me through this
i have to teather internet through my phone but after a few mins of surfing nothing will work i tried to change to ka7 but to no avail not even my phones browser will not work. i end up having to either reboot my phone or use the turn off data connection so tell me how to fix plz

Having the same internet issues as well, did you check to see if you're throttled?

how do i do that? i do notice that when im downloading somthing i see that it slows down

Either get the speedtest app or go to your phone account to find out how much data you have used
Also, try reflashing the ROM. Don't restore system data from titanium backup
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App

Yeah I used to get download speeds between 4-6 mbps, but now I'm lucky to even download a single app from the android market. Just call t mobile and ask them if your line has been throttled. (i ended up calling and they couldn't fix my issue so they are sending me a new vibrant)

is it tmo thats doing this ive done the reflash and it still happens how do i convince tmo to unthrotthel my connection

You can't remove it, its their new policy. You could use root explorer and delete the data/system/throttle. You might have to wait until your new billing cycle starts.

cant you switch the APN to internet2.voicestream.com and be unthrottled???

Only you know how much data you've used and it does get throttled after 2GB. There's a thread in this forum about dealing with throttled data.

I thought they only begin to throttle at 5gb? Its weird though how everyones been posting non stop about being throttled, maybe t mobile is finally enforcing their policy as far as data of concerned...

After 5GB. And removing the throttle is a federal computer crime. It just bottlenecks the rest of us.

Bypassing tmobile tethering monthly charge?

Would this be possible once its implemented through a dev mod of froyo? I was bummed out to hear that tmobile its planning on charging us for something that should be standard when froyo his our phones. Anyone have any thoughts or direct me to a response if this was previously asked?

Sorry for thr 2x post. From what I read they monitor usage upto 5gs. Then they throttle your speed down. Now question is will this be the same after Froyo? Will they just remove mobile ap like they did in eclair?

It's all about options, you can rely on OTA update, and keep your phone pristine stock condition (software-wise) and pay the provider, or you can root, forget about OTA, load a custom ROM and make the most out of your hardware and software and do not pay the provider (just support your devs!) - just be a man enough to admit you fessed up when the things go south.
It's up to you, but remember you have a choice unlike other guys using other mobile phone system(s).
I actually work at T-Mo, as far as I know they only way to honestly "Stop" the tethering is to throttle you at 5GB(not really stop, just slow you to below dial-up speed)... I know that we aren't supposed to tell people they can still tether without the feature, but it is possible from what I have seen... I'm looking for a way to bypass it as well.
As soon as the Vibrant gets support Officially for the Netflix app everyone should start flooding T-mobile or whoever ur SP is and complain, complain, complain about hitting the cap. Thats my story and I'm sticking to it
*EDIT* I think I misunderstood the OP so my post may not be relevant to this thread, sorry. But I'm not deleting it I believe its important none the less.

(Q) should I be worried about T-Mobile seeing that I'm rooted.

I'm worried because I recently flashed to obsidian and I've been using wifi calling. I'm worried that tmobile can see that I've been using wifi calling, and wifi calling is only available for 2.2 and hasn't been released to the vibrant yet. So if they see that I've been using wifi calling they will know that I have 2.2 on my phone. So what I'm trying to find out is if T-Mobile can see if i use wifi calling and if I have anything to worry about when calling T-Mobile because of wifi calling??
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
How will they know your rooted? Is it not an app that can be sideloaded? As for me I don't really care, I voided my warranty long ago and if I had to take my phone back how would I explain that hole where my ffc is? I figure if my phone is really that screwed up I will pay just pay the deductible for the insurance. I guess that's the price you pay for heavily Modding your device.

Well the way they would see I'm rooted is because wifi calling is only available for android 2.2. Android 2.2 hasn't been released for the vibrant yet.

no, you don't.
1. put update.zip on sdcard root
2. boot into recovery and reinstall packages
3. ??????????
4. PROFIT!
I do this all the time when flashing back to JFD stock. i leave the clockwork update.zip on my sdcard, and before it can even boot into the stock JFD rom, i load clockwork.
Short answer: no. you are paranoid.
Long answer: no.
Why would it even matter if T-Mobile knows you are rooted? It isn't like they are going to charge you for WiFi calling. You use your minutes when you make a WiFi call anyways...
I have to agree with the above poster. Even if for some wild reason an employee of T-Mobile did find out you were rooted, so what? They're never going to, but I fail to see the logic behind this thread. Even if they did, what does it matter? The beauty of open source is that it's open, and you can do whatever you want with your phone. Has anyone specifically told you that you weren't allowed to mod your phone and/or use wifi calling? If not, then what are you worried about?

And to help the OP, It ceased be illegal to root your phone a while back.
Forgive the link to an outside source but here is the engadget coverage
http://www.engadget.com/2010/07/26/library-of-congress-adds-dmca-exception-for-jailbreaking-or-root/
So as long as you obtain a legal source to do it ( and since open source is largely a free market ) you are well within your rights to root your phone...
As for WIFI calling, IMHO this treads a grey zone... the app while not intended for your phone currently is planned for the vibrant, and the app works as intended... IE you use your own minutes to place a wifi call, so T-MO isnt losing on the revenue. It may be a grey zone but I think you are safely on the light side of it.

Request for KA7 wifi calling

Hey guys (and gals) I've looked all over but can't find a flashable wifi calling zip for ka7. Currently running the newest axura as of today (2.x.x.x.2) I noticed there are other ka7 based roms with wifi calling installed out the gate. Can someone please put a link in this thread or perhaps a new thread in apps/themes? I would really appreciate it and am very sure others would also thanks in advance. Yall are the reason I still own a vibrant!

I think I read somewhere that some roms don't include it because it uses the battery resources, so it is up to the user to choose between shorter battery life with wi-fi apk. Can someone please confirm this, if true how much use do you lose from installing it?

I can confirm it. I can also confirm that freezing the application with Titanium will NOT stop the process from running in the background, draining battery all the while. The battery drain is noticeable, but varies depending on the ROM. If you're interested I wrote two simple scripts. One to temporarily remove WiFi-Calling, and another reapply it. That way you can restore when you need it, and save bettery when you don't. If you do download this please be sure to read the note I left above the scripts in my repo.
ka7 wificalling
I grabbed the version from theexel's post in post 3, and it worked like a champ. Thanks allot theexel! Also in regards to the battery consumption: on the earlier builds, I did notice a horrible battery life but post KA5, The batter life doesn't seem to be an issue whatsoever. I have it installed currently and my battery life is the same, or at least its not a noticeable difference. If people are holding back on using wifi calling because of the battery consumption, then maybe you should give it another chance. I did, and am very impressed. Just wanted to share!

I used the suite to install your script, both the sgs tools, and the reqular 2 scripts. Im a bit confused, the wifi app has a on and off switch. Doesnt that disable wifi calling and take it out of memory to save battery? Do I only need the sgs tools scripts? I used the sgs script after opening the app (wifi) and turning it back off through the app itself. When I used script disable I got a force close from a process I didnt recognize.
I did notice the t mobile app for wifi says it uses my minutes, how do people seem to say they can talk for free with wifi calling, am I missing something? Does the app allow free calling (doesnt use any minutes) because we use a rom?

Just to clarify the misconception everyone has on wifi calling; it is not free, never was. The only way to get free calls is thru UMA which is the same concept of wifi calling using your router as signal, but you only get UMA on blackberrys.
So for example, if u had a blackberry and made a UMA call from Starbucks tmo hotspot and drove for 8hrs without hanging up, that whole call will not eat your mins because the call originated from a UMA hotspot, therefore free.
If you used your droid in the same scenario and used wifi calling, you will automatically switch to your network. The whole call would count against your minutes.
Hope this helps

[Q] ICS build 6 data bugs

I am using ICS build 6 by teamhacksung, and my data counter doesn't work. It always says I haven't used any data.
I've had to use 3rd party apps like 3G Watchdog. But that doesn't tell you which apps use how much data, and can't block apps from mobile data..
anyone else having this problem?

"my Verizon". is the only app that i know of that gives server side data usage. Anything else is inaccurate. As for which apps. Idk

Yeah user my Verizon for accurate data usage, and then maybe a different data monitor from the app store to block different apps from using data.

cant you still dial #data and verizon will text you your data usage?
If you really need accurate data usage info, then use the verizon app or look at your usage online. That said, my data counter works fine with glitch v14, I don't remember it working with the stock kernel.

well I'm on a per-MB data plan and am NOT a verizon subscriber [MVNO PagePlus Cellular]. So the verizon app won't work.. But the problem isn't that I don't have a data counter, I have 3G Watchdog. The problem is the stock data app isn't working.
And I want to be able to block FB from auto-updating on 3G, it sometimes uses up to 1/2 MB after I enable 3g [that is 10c, because I am paying 20c/MB]
So is this the glitch v14 kernel I can flash to teamhacksung's build 6 [not 6.1] ICS?

I experienced the same thing on THS Build 6 with stock kernel. The range of date cannot even be correctly set. It always shows March 8 to March 16, and 0 data is counted. Interestingly the wifi counter seems working, but I doubt its accuracy.
I'm using THS 6.1 with the Glitch kernel. My data counter works fine, and pretty much matches what "My Verizon" is showing.
If you want the Glitch kernel, it is in Droidstyles thread , in Section-8

upsell tethering on the Amaze

I have a rooted amaze. Last month I was able to tether fine and now I get the upsell page . I've tried freezing apps . No luck . I've tried at least 12 tethering apps no luck . So what's the fix to tether besides paying 14.99 a month for my data I already payed for.
There's a thread regarding this issue. But I'll answer your concern.
You need to make a new APN same as the Tmobile one but a new one. Set it as Default. Then delete the Tmobile one or remove the default flag from it. Then you can use your hot spot without those problems popping up.
Edit...didn't even have to use the search engine..

Ive read that already,
Ive done allot of reading. My phone came with that APN setting. For **** n giggle I tried it any ways and it didnt work.
If the Samsung Galaxy 2 can Freeze it , there has to be something similar for our phone I would think .

All you have to do is clear the "apn type" field of the "t mobile data" apn settings. Why bother creating a whole new apn if this much easier method works? Just curious if there's any particular advantage... Mines been working just to e using this method, as have the amazes my two co workers use. Mines rooted (worked with the new ICS Rom and gingerbread alike), and my two co workers' amazes are completely stock. This method I've used seems pretty fool proof.

If you have the 5gb data plan or higher, you can get free tethering. Just go into a tmobile store and tell them you want the free tethering. Thats what I did at least.
