right now, no, do not buy a Gtablet. They have not released any real updates since January. It's currently selling for about $260 on Woot and Tiger Direct sales.
My Stepfather just got an Acer Iconia at Staples with a $100 coupon. It's far superior to the Gtablet. It comes packaged with Android 3.0 (Honeycomb), is relatively young, meaning that you'll get at least a few more months of updates, the screen is better...blah, blah, blah.
All in all, the Gtablet is good, but not becuase of Viewsonic, but becuase of devs on forums like this one. The hardware is nice, nad the potential is there. But without help from Viewsonic, we will not have fully functional gingerbread or honeycomb.
Your best bet is to get somethign else.

TJ is telling you the straight truth. There are many other options out there for you other than spending your money on a tablet that Viewsonic has simply walked away from after 6 months. You will be left with an orphaned tablet. If you could get it for $100.00 or so it would be a different story. I'm so upset with Viewsonic, I won't ever spend $.01 with them again.
might be worth it if its dirt cheap, cause there's lots of better tablets coming out. Still, this tablet can hold its own, has good specs and im running Honeycomb smoothly on it. Its not perfect yet, but its still a pretty good ROM. my only real gripe right now is the screen, check out some of the other tablets before jumping on this one. The Archos G9 80 and 101 will be out soon if you want a cheap tablet, they look really interesting and much better than their last tablets: 1.5 Ghz Dual Core CPU, 250gb hdd as an option, they will have the market, so no work arounds needed, unlike their last tablets and also the Gtablet.

If you can get a used one for less than $200, then it will still be a good buy.
I wouldn't count on an upgrade from Android 2.2 . But there may soon be the Linux MeeGo distro available for nVidia Tegra devices. If that happens this tablet will really be useful.
I just broke my G-Tab & was contemplating as to whether I should buy a replacement screen (if possible), a new one, or a different android tab altogether. In the end though after much debating & thinking about the android os in terms of out the box usage & functionality I decided to go with a Windows 7 based tablet. What drew me away from the G-Tab was not so much its hardware (screen excluded) but more-so its support from Viewsonic & androids ability to just "get it & go".
I'm not knocking the android o/s but it still has a long way to come to reach that level. All I can say is keep your mind open, look around, weigh the price vs specs vs features & don't dismiss other options in regards to the o/s.
I purchased my EXOPC off ebay for $475 & cannot be happier with the specs it lists (to name a few):
11.6 inch screen @ 1366 x 768 Resolution, 16:9 Wide-screen Ratio
Intel Atom Pineview-M N450, 1.66 GHz (supports 64-bit)
Storage Capacity 32 Gigabyte or 64 Gigabyte Solid State Drive (SSD)
2 Gigabytes DDR2 SDRAM
Intel GMA 3150 & Broadcom Crystal HD 1080p (supports up to 1080p high-definition video)
The biggest point though is the ability to run ALL windows apps on this bad boy as well as install Linux, MeeGo, Splashtop etc. etc.
I have owned my G Tablet basically since it first came out. It has been a great little tablet, especially with all the custom roms available for it.
While the G Tab has it's cons like screen viewing angles, the positives definitely out weigh the negatives in my opinion.
I was thinking of getting another tablet. But, every time I compare what's out there now like the Xoom, Playbook, Samsung Galaxy to the G Tablet, I just cannot justify getting a new tablet.
The G Tab has an excellent processor, great battery life and wonderful community support. The only thing I can think of that the G Tab doesn't have is a HD rear cam for video recording. Which, in reality doesn't worry me to much because I have other devices, such as my phone for video.
What's your opinion? Is there any tablet out there you are considering as a replacement for the G Tablet? Or is it a better idea to see what the next generation of tablet brings?
I think I'm going to wait for the quad core Tegra's. The chip is supposed to have 5x the performance of a Tegra2.

I see you found your answer. NVidia started shipping tech samples back in Feb with planned release this summer. I'm sure others will jump on the boat after the current crop of tab are out for a while...they do want to recoup some of their investment on the newest tablets, but I'll be waiting.
If you check NVidia, they have a whole line of Tegra processors planned through 2013, utlimately reaching 75x the performance of Tegra2.

Today I would not buy a gTablet, but I don't think it's the right time to buy another tablet either. It's not just because 'the next generation will be better'. It's also because, 'the next generation lowers prices on the current generation'.
We are seeing more new tablets approach the $300 mark, either due to $100-off coupons or tablets just being priced low (i.e. Acer Iconia A100, 7-inch Tegra 2 Honeycomb tablet will be coming out at a rumored $300 price). Soon the choice may be between a $300 transformer, brand-new $300 Acer, and a $200 (if not totally discontinued) gTablet.
Tablets are rapidly evolving so I understand the upgrade cycle will be faster than, say, TVs or desktop computers. Even so, personally I will not upgrade more often than once a year; I'm not made of money. Late winter/spring 2012 we will have new tablets with 4.0/Ice cream, Tegra 3, and post-Christmas pricing might be more attractive. That's just me.

Jaycard, I'm in the same position, for the same reasons.
I don't need a newer operating system right now and my gtab runs any app my phone does.
Also every time I look at the newer tabs, I have to think, gee my Viewsonic can already do that.
For now it has been a good buy and and meets my needs.
So I'm going to wait till next year before I upgrade.
Maybe that Staples coupon was a real temptation.

Just watched presentation of upcoming Toshiba Tab and Iahve to say I fell in love again (as with GT 10.1 which dissapointed me with itd SoC).
AT200 will be equipped with Ti OMAP4 4430 (1,2 Ghz) chip - the one with Netflix HD certificate. Has microSD slot, micro USB and HDMI. It is just 7,7 mm thick and very light.
What do you think....if you thinking of getting GT10.1 in few days would that make you wait?
And one more thing... Video transcoding - is it coming to an end???

Specs is one thing. What's important is real life performance and if there's any other possible flaw. Gtab actually looks not bad, but the software performance bogged it down. I'd by the time the Toshiba tablet is released, icecream sandwich may be released or close to be released. So unless the performance of the Toshiba tab is another class higher than grab, I see no point thinking too much about it.

I looked at the Engadget review and the tablet looked pretty slow to me, I might be wrong. I'm very happy with my P7510 running on a vanilla 3.1 Honeycomb (soon to run on PhantomHacker's 3.2 vanilla ROM) and I'm looking forward to see Ice Cream on it.
The thing is, we will never purchase a tablet if we wait for the next "big one" to come out. Technology changes so fast that is not worth to trouble yourself. Just enjoy the tablet and use it to death, I personally think that my Tab 10.1 is an excellent product.
Well, I am not waiting for the next big one but just for one that does not have Tegra2 inside, looks OK, has I/O's I want and 3G connectivity.
So, just to have something for now I bought iPad 1 3G few weeks ago. As it is very limited device I was waiting for it to get right price. $350 for new one on warranty is OK. Now I can wait till end of the year to get Excite or Holiday or TF2 or Xoom2.... Will see.
If you want to wait, an alternative would be the HP Touchpad for $99 (fire sale instead of $499). It runs on WebOS which is awesome and I'm pretty sure someone will make an Android ROM for it eventually. Don't expect a great quality build, though.
The Tosh looks very nice, another weapon in the Android armoury. I'm still very happy with my Samsung 16Gb Wifi.

It would be all true if folks like me could actually get it.
IMHO if you want (especially 3G) tablet now, good one, for reasonable price, just to keep you going till the one you really want is out iPad1 seems like a great deal.
Does most of the stuff Tegra 2 tablets do, has 3G and new one can still be found pretty cheap (half of the zoom price for example). And form me video capabilities all almost the same.
There will be always something new and better than what's available currently in the market. By the time Toshiba excite gets released to the market, even more better tablet with awesome specs will be shown at a new tech show taking place anywhere on this planet Earth.

I'm feeling exactly the same as you. The size and weight of the GT 10.1 was perfect but the poor video decoding performance of the Tegra 2 and lack of MicroSD card slot was a real let down. The AT200 seems like it will be perfect for me (assuming the OMAP proc is a lot better for video decoding). I just hope it comes out real soon to the UK market. If they delay it too long then I may be put off with official specs of ICS tablets.
It is the same SOC as in new Archos G9 series (like them but they look "cheap") and they say it will "Play" anything and everything. ;-)
Dont even think about getting the tab 10.
The Ti OMAP4 4430 in the toshiba is far superior to Tegra 2.
Ti OMAP4 4430 has A9 cores with Neon processing. Tergra 2 does not have the Neon processing and will be much slower when running apps which use Neon code and alot of apps are starting to use it.
Ti OMAP4 4430 has DUAL channel memory controller. Tegra 2 only has a single channel. Since video memory is shared, dual channel will give double the memory bandwidth which is highly needed since video memory is shared from system memory.
Ti OMAP4 4430 has SUPERIOR video decoding hardware compared to tegra 2. You can finally play real HD 1080p video. Tegra 2 decoder is so slow it cant decode main and high HD profiles which is what everyone uses.

Full specs have been released.
Does it have an amazing screen like the Samsung SPLS? Screen quality along with weight is what made my decision. However im disappointed in the current state of honeycomb/tablet apps. I would expect apps like Google+ to have the hangout video support. Lack of skype video is also a huge downer. My older samsung galaxy 7 also had way better video playing support.

No, but don't worry, I do not think Europe has one either .
And two facts:
1. OMAP is a definitely better SOC than Tegra 2 - no arguing here. The only thing at which Tegra 2 might be better (we will have to wait and see, but I doubt it myself) is energy management.
I am worried about battery life of a tablet with 1,2 - 1,5 Ghz clock.
2. It will be cheaper in US than in EU - fact.
Now, one more "issue" we might encounter by the time it is in the shops. What will be a better choice - tablet with Omap4 or Tegra3/Kal-El with 4 cores and new architecture? (unless nvidia made an intel trick or the one they do with graphic cards - Tegra 3 is two Tegra 2 cpu's on a single chip - this would suck I think)

Its just your question is more of a personal choice thing. I have the Asus Tf. To me its a good tablet at a decent price, but to another person it might not be. If you're able go to a place that carry a few different brand and play with them.
baseballfanz is right its a personally opinion. Me personally I like the HTC Flyer. I have and EVO 4G and I am a sense junkie so it fits me. Price isn't too bad either. like $599.99 plus tax for one without a contract. Its not very big only 8" i think but thats big enough for me.

if you must have a sd slot, get the motorola xoom, it's been rated as one of the best tablet, but if you dont need the sd slot, go for the galaxy tab 10.1.
i'm considering either the galaxy tab 10.1 or 8.9, both out at the moment, or wait for the galaxy tab 7.7, i have till end of december to decide.
the chances is, it should be the galaxy tab 7.7, because of the super amoled plus screen and built in sd slot that i want.
I have been looking at Tablets for literally a month and I havent made up my mind yet. I was originally looking at the Thrive, but changed my mind since it is really flimsy. Then I thought about getting the transformer but realized its really only huge sell point(to me) was the keyboard, which I wouldnt be getting. Then I was completely sold on the Xoom, and I almost bought it but decided to wait.. 2 days after waiting I starting looking at the 10.1 galaxy tab. So now Im torn between the Xoom and galaxy tab. Any advice would be real nice. I like that google bought moto, means the xoom will get updates sooner than any, but I like touchwiz(aside from the noticeable tag when changes pages). samsung has THE best screen out there and its thin and light. But the xoom is build more solidly and is more sturdy. They are like opposites while still being the same product so I am just stuck... lol
I've also have been looking for a while now and yesterday i ordered the motorola xoom , i've read a lot of reviews about a lot of tablets , and the xoom is still the best i think (will post if testing is done).I know motorla is working on a second xoom , but couldn't wait anymore

I seriously hope this isn't the so called Lenovo tablet I've been hearing so much about that's reason to pass Prime up. Cuz if it is, its been seriously dumbed down in specs from what people been barking. Its gonna have same resolution as prime but lower quality or not as good.

I will have to thank E.mote on this thread. In one thread, the 3 most talked about tablets to pass up Prime for has been killed in one thread. The Acer700 isn't even coming out for consumers. The Lenovo tablet had its specs seriously dumbed down and is not having super high resolution screen, has only 1Gb of ram, and an inferior dual core Processor. Same with the new Toshiba tablet coming out. Dumbed down specs and basically inferior all around the board. the later 2 will have same resolution but lower quality being only IPS. Prime has Super IPS+.
That only leaves the Ipad3 left. I'm sure that will be the most interesting out of mentioned tablets that are upcoming. Looks like Prime might be king of Android tablets for majority of 2012 if not the whole year. lol.
Acer said "1st half" for A700, which most took to be Q2. My guess would be May/June, allowing for ramp-up of screen yields. Tegra 2 tabs (excl Xoom) came out in April last year. More interesting would be the price. I'm expecting $500, especially if iPad 3 comes out with QXGA res at same price.
Would have been nice for Sasha bud to comment on screen quality. Guess we'll get that soon enough as CES rolls along.

now this Lenovo one looks decent. Might follow the same fate as prime regarding GPS since back is metal also. He said metallic feel so material of backplate still needs confirming. its said to run tegra3 and higher resolution. if you read further down article into the comments, you will see alot of worries n doubt on it. Main one being that the higher resolution will eat up alot more processing power of tegra3, even of clocked slightly higher. That will make it less powerful on performance. That's why I think Prime n Tegra3 hit the sweet spot when it comes to great processing power and an excellent HD display also. Also they said this is aimed more for the business market. with that display, if specs hold to be true, it will make this device considerably more expensive than the Prime. most people I've seen here posted $500 being the Max they would pay for a tablet, regardless of specs. IF Lenovo could bring this tablet at same range as prime it would be a miracle but I doubt it though.
Something else I noticed, this tablet is thick like the original Toshiba Thrive. Definitely not slim like the Prime. If they going to make it thick like that might as well of added a full size USB port. But it doesn't have it. only looks to have full size SD card slot. That UI looked horrible also as it wasn't optimized yet. The guy also said release date hasn't even been "Officially" said or thought of yet. it will release in China first then internationally. So expect this around May/June earliest for China release. then a month or 2 later for international release. Looks like a very long wait. by then something better will be out or right around the corner..lol

From the (newly linked) vid, it's faux metal. Regardless, since it's for business, wireless performance will be reliable. Part of the higher cost.
Edit: The guy before the rep says that K2 will be for "$399 for 16GB version, available in Q2." Pretty sure that ain't true.

I don't pay much attention to Youtube comments as a rule. Whatever said at this point is merely speculation. We'll see when it (and the Acer) comes out. Since the Prime can do 1080p via HDMI no problem, I expect same perf for screen res. If UI lags persist with ICS, then it's an OS problem.

Yes, the Prime's thinness and metal back are strong appeals. I wouldn't say K2 is as fat as the Thrive--which is pretty dang fat--but more like the OG TF or Acer A500. However, for business segment, durability counts more than style.

For Android tabs, I think Asus will have exclusive bragging rights on this. Aside from Asus, I don't see much enthusiasm from vendors for Android tabs. For Win8 tabs, I expect many--if not most--setups to be hybrid w/ detachable screen.

the ideapsd s2 I linked does but its specs are not up to Prime Standards. Hold up, it makes no mention of its dock having a battery included so I guess its a fail.
Wait until you guys see the tablet that Razor is introducing at CES alongside their overpriced laptop. I am here at MGM in Vegas gambling my ass off with some tech freaks. The guy who I was talking to at the Craps table asked me what I was here to see and I told him a few things. After I told him I was a gamer and a Android freak, he then said, "wait until you see the tablet that Razor is introducing." I told him I was getting the prime and he said to come back and tell him if I still wanted the prime after seeing the Razor. Bottom Line. Its probably going to cost a arm and a leg.

I'm actually disappointed by Lenovo's quad core tablet. I won't even go into detail on why... Lenovo's dual core Krait tablet is good on CPU (won't know how well it does compared to tegra 3 til we see comparison benchmark) but Adreno GPU is horrendous. But overall, terrible showing by lenovo on tablet front...
Now, Acer's quad core is interesting. Except, it'll be on same 1.3ghz Tegra 3 (according to The Verge & Android Police.. although, i think it is speculation) with 1080p display and must likely, with 2 gig of ram. If it does get released in Q2, the price will most likely be at $500 (for 16g).. I doubt they'll go higher and compete with Apple and Samsung. I personally like the build quality (certainly an upgrade from the ugly Iconia A500).. but...
Is it worth the wait for 1080p resolution and 2 gig of Ram? Considering that android has dearth of dedicated tablet apps, the high resolution and ram will hardly be taken advantage of except GAMES and 1080p movies.
I'll wait and see what Samsung and Asus to offer...
Lenovo IdeaTab S2 10, 7, and 5-inchers
The IdeaPad S2 10 comes closest to the Asus Prime in configuration, with dock that houses an extra 10-hr batt (20-hr total). Would be interesting to see the 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon's bench numbers. Available Q2.

The so called "competition" to the Prime won't blow it away in any regard, won't be cheaper and won't come out before god knows when.
Maybe getting the Prime isn't such a bad idea after all.
Wow Im digging that Acer. Assuming Acer will have more game support? Well as far as gameloft games anyway. I do hope it does come out to consumers. I also like that it has micro USB for charging rather than proprietary one. Will be using my prime till then.

they aren't sure anymore if the USB can be used for charging.
personally, i'm not blown away by either of those tablets, is 1080p enticing? sure, but i'll take my cost effective, good dock having, in my hands now prime over something that may be out by the middle of this year.
being that toshiba wants to charge 500+ for the 16gb dual core a200, these tablets are going to be priced right out of the market.
I'm too sold on the keyboard dock to have considered either of these new devices. I'd like the 2GB DDR3 that appears to be an option on the Lenovo tablet, I admit... browser tabs are still unloaded more than I'd like on 1GB RAM. I don't value high-resolution screens above the keyboard dock, though; high-res screens are pretty, but the keyboard dock is transformative (no pun intended).
