i really, really, really want this to happen so i can flash android thru nand and run wm6.5 from sd coz i still need my garmin xt from time to time.
Thanks for the post, and the replies. I was wondering the same thing. I've got a really smooth nand of android gingerbread and have only one reason that i need wm 6.5 back. The video recording. Unless someone can fix the instability of the 720p recording for android....

You realize that winmo6.5 can't do 720p recording either, right? The only OS that can do 720p recording right now on the HD2 is WP7... not sure if there's any issues with it... I haven't tried or tested yet.

Well, I feel pretty uneducated right now with the phone I've had for almost a year. Thanks for the correction. This of course creates a new set of questions. What is the HD2 w/ Windows Mobile 6.5's recording resolution? All I know is, and maybe it's the android rom i'm using, but the recording on my hd2 when it was stock is way better than the recording from the android rom. Now I'm curious if there is a way to fix my issue. I don't need 720p recording. Just the quality that a stock hd2 is capable of. Thanks again!

That´s exactly the reason i am hoping for a SD-WinMo build
I have switched over to Nand Android and do not want to miss it, but i do miss my TomTom with rather new maps for WinMo 6.5.
i too am interested on having the ginger 2.3 nand and on sd the wm 6.5 ( igo and camera quality better)
some new info about this ?
regards
I love to see WM6.5 run on SD card, I missied Tomtom on Window mobile. I have Navigon on HD2 android but TomTom still my favorites of all navigiation.
Patience is the key... running WM from a card poses many more problems and requires a lot more time/effort than getting android to run from a card....
IF, that's an if not a when, the DFT get this working then you wont be able to miss it don't worry

Yea, that's the reason I kept my WM6.5 as well
Is there a way to install WM6.5 and Android on the same internal NAND? and use a boot loader to choose? My Rafdroid SD build is soooo veeery slow and apparently the speed settings are already built in fast. takes about 5-10 seconds to respond to anything.

I got the same notice here in the US. They are shutting it all down. I realize they are trying to push WM7, but it angers me that they don't maintain WM6 support for several years, like they did with XP.

Some reason for me, Garmin is best for me and I like to keep it. I am hoping one day Garmin will support Android.
I just tried Papago for Android, it is not as good as Garmin. Far behind!

Hi Fellow XDA'ers!
I have a touch dual (with WM6.5).
I like the look of the Hero but have a few reservations.
Firstly, I read posts that it struggles to sync with Outlook!!?? - can this be sorted? - ActivSync (by BTooth) is very handy and does the job well.
Secondly, I like having the apps such as IGO8 or TOMTOM to hand on my phone, should I need it.
Can I install these apps (or similar) on the Hero?....In other words - can WM apps work on Android?
thanks

I think syncing with Outlook over Bluetooth is out of the question. It can sync Contacts and Calendar (only those two) over the USB cable with the use of the 'HTC Sync' software. That software is not available _yet_ on the HTC site, but apparently it IS included on the memorycard included with the Orange bundle that is now shipping.

Those two applications are not (yet?) available for Android. There are a few other navigation solutions available, but I'm under the impression they are not the level of iGO or TomTom. Also, I have no idea on which countries they support or what price they are available at.

No. There are a whole bunch of Android apps, but software made for Windows Mobile will simply not work (and never will) on Android. They will have to make a special Android version for it, and for utilities and tweaks that is simply not easily done.

ALKs CoPilot Live 8 is available on the market and is quite competitively priced at £22.60 for a one region version (e.g. UK maps).
I've not played with it extensively, as I bought it as a backup for my regular Garmin satnav unit, but it is definitely much slicker than some of the other alternatives for Android that I've tried (e.g. AndNav).

Dave

Seems to be a good TomTom alternative! Thanks for the Tip! And they even have 'whole of western europe' or only 'benelux'. That makes it much more affordable if you never leave The Netherlands for example .
Since I'm an Android newbie myself (well, not even an Android newbie, still waiting for my Hero): On the CoPilot site, on 'where to buy' to say to go to the Android market. But they also have three picture, some sort of square barcode. I've seen those more around Android oriented pages. How do they work?
It's a QR code (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/QR_Code) which is essentially a 2-dimensional barcode that can hold a variety of data. In this case, it is holding a URL.
If you download a barcode reader from the market (e.g. Barcode Scanner by ZXing team, which is the one I use) you can use the phones camera to "read" the barcode and it will then allow you to jump to the URL in the browser.

Dave
Winmo apps on Android
You never know what could happen guys!
I currently dual boot windows 7 ultimate and Linux Ubuntu.
And as all linux users are aware, there is a nice little app called wine, Wine allows us to run and use many windows apps in a Linux enviroment...
Cant be that much different with Android (linux) and windows mobile.. can it?
Would be a fantastic step and i think possibly the final push for many winmo users!
Im still struggling to choose my self....From HD to Hero?? mmmm
There are few things you need to know about the young android:
1. You cannot save apps to memory card unless rooted.
2. You cannot receive files via bluetooth unless rooted.
overall, Android is a lot better than Winmob
Sorry if this is a stupid question :-(
I run a number of Java applets under WINMO via an applet manager (ESmertec for example). Will these run on Android?
CoPilot is working brilliantly on my Magic and I'll be putting it on my Hero when I get it at weekend.
Here's a great thing - any apps that I've purchased from the Android Market are tied to my google checkout account - When I sign in on my Hero and go to market, those apps will show as purchased and downloadable for me. Also my calendar and contacts will automatically sync to my Hero.
As far as WM apps are concerned, I've used both WM6 and android devices - Not missing anything on my Magic that I had on WM now that Turn By Turn Nav is there. Some apps are already ported over - Docs To go, and recently Touchpal Keyboards.
The ability to search for, find, pay for (if needed) and download software on the fly is just priceless. The fact that most apps are free or very cheap is even better. I'd not go back to WinMo now for anything...
However, you're just gonna have to get one in your hand and see for yourself - its all personal preference amongst the top handsets really.
well my upgrade is being delivered in the morning! yey! HTC Hero on orange..
Wonder if tomtom will port any time soon? should be an easy job considering the tom tom units are linux driven!

I've been a TomTom user (on my HTC Trinity and HTC Touch Pro) for almost 3 years now. My HTC Hero will be arriving on Monday morning and I'm actually pretty excited about the change I'll be making to CoPilot.
Not that there's anything wrong with TomTom, but the newer version of CoPilot looks very cool, and it might be nice to try something different.

I have heard a lot of people complaining about the version of CoPilot crashing on the Hero, not sure why this is. TomTom are releasing an iPhone version so who knows, might make its way over to Android in about 3 years?
For me, Copilot certainly crashed. It was not a patch on the stability of Garmin XT. The application felt unfinished with a lot of times when not a full crash, lack of keyboard reponse. Tbh, this failure was the straw that broke the Hero's back
I've not had a single problem with copilot on my magic. Fully tested with postcodes etc and long journeys. Its VERY cheap compared to most satnavs, can be used without any data assistance at all, and very quick to reroute etc.
I have heard about some probs but they have mostly seemed to be related to people trying to hack it or get the maps running without paying, and I know that copilot has added a few layers of security since I bought mine for magic - initially it just installed and needed your google checkout number.
Then it needed that, and you then got a license code and device ID thingy.
I had an update early on from version .303 to .327 which made mine stop loading - One email to support, told me to uninstall ALL, including the maps folder, and it was back working perfectly... I personally think the voices of folks having probs trying to get it running without paying are clouding the issue a bit - I've only heard from one (cbailey) who I know paid, but still got crashes.
Daisy - Was happy with my G1 (since Jan) Happy with my Magic(since beginning of June), and gonna be happy with my Hero I think...

You're in the UK right? I have been looking into copilot as a replacement for my old TomTom once I get my Hero. And although copilot said on their website they have european versions, if I browse the store (though Cyrket for example) I only see their USA map pack / application. Is this location / localization dependant somehow? Why can't I see the european maps in the market?

I think we got a big android fan here
In the Market, you get the option for a One Region map - Uk and Ireland comes under that - for £25.99 (Market shows 22 something but then checkout adds VAT for UK)
I think these options are only seen/available on market for android phones. I think they are not offered as products for other platforms, and you only get details once you have bought CoPilot 8 for android.
I personally downloaded CoPilot Central and got my maps via PC through that. You get a Membership name and password when you checkout at google Checkout - I was sent an email with details of that. The actual copilot programe for android downloads to your fone OTA like other apps, but the map fetcher is on PC. I think you CAN get the maps OTA to your fone, but I thougyht that seemed silly and would take ages and be heavy on your data allowance etc.
CoPilot central is free I think - You can get it here

No problems at all with CoPilot APART from TouchFlo seems to lock up when I exit. Not sure if anyone else has this problem.
Other than that, it has no lag what-so-ever, which I used to always have with TomTom. Big thumbs up for me, even more so when I sort out the locking issue when exit, but thats no biggie.
WM6.5 for HTC Surround
I know it is a little too early to ask this question but here it goes:
Is there a way to flash a WM6.5 custom ROM into the HTC Surround?
WP7 limit the full potential of the HTC Surround's excellent hardware.
No, there is not and I doubt there ever will be.
Not sure if you have even played with WP7, but if you haven't, go give it a shot. I thought it's restrictions would affect me, but I haven't had any problems.

I have an HTC Surround since the last couple of days. I'm "upgrading" from an HTC Touch PRO with an Energy WM6.5 Custom ROM.
I'm having a difficult time managing email file attachments, contacts and applications. WM6.5 allowed me to receive and store files in the SD card for future use.
How I store a received email attached file for later use? I don't want to keep the whole email in the inbox just to have the attached file available.
WM6.5 allowed me that, in addition I was able to connect the phone via USB and transfer that same file to any PC. WP7 can't be reconized by PCs.
That is in my opinion a major drawback gattech. I have not found a way to make the phone be reconized by my PC and found alot of people complaining becasue you can't use outlook to back up you contact and such. I would guess this is to stop people from hacking the phone but them trying to keep people from as the android boys would say rooting or the iphone guys jailbreaking is causeing the phone to be lacking a bit. I hope someone can figure out how to do it I like using outlok to keep calander and contacts backedup.
I think you have to use the Zune software for synchronization with PCs
You do use ZUNE and you can only sync with it so music pics and apps I want to put files on my phone and use them when I get to another comp or sync to outlook. When I plug my phone in it does not show up under computer it only tells me in ZUNE that a device is connected. This is a great example of Microsoft wanting to be like apple.
There is a registry hack that you can do that will allow you to throw files on to it. You still need the Zune software I believe, but it should work.
http://www.engadget.com/2010/11/18/registry-hack-allows-for-direct-loading-of-media-on-windows-phon/
I think if we give this phone/OS a little bit of time the developers will make this an AMAZING device.still pretty much in its infancy.

still can not violate the rom the phone? I have it in another language ... I hope you will be able to flash .. Not to mention if it is a Windows 6.5, would be very happy
So here's what I'm thinking...
Two days ago I got my nearly free HTC Surround up at AT&T... And so far, I'm so unimpressed that I've gone back to my Topaz.
Stepping up to WP7 from WM6.5 is in reality stepping down for me, because of the complete control that MSFT has kept thus far over the operations of the phone. True, several cracks and unlocking routines have emerged already, but I truely miss the root customization and the ability to do almost anything you want that came with WM6.5. So here's my question:
Is it possible now, or might it be possible, to port WM6.5 over to WP7 devices? I ask this because IMHO, this device has the hardware specs that could only have been dreamed of in WM6.5 phones and unless I'm mistaken, this phone could run WM6.5 flawlessly (In terms of the video, processor, internal storage, etc.)
Is this a possibility? Is there a chance my Surround can find some redemption in my eyes? Thanks in advance, and I hope that Surround users will start/continue to work to unlock the many hinderences of this phone (Donations! )
I'm in the same boat as you. I would love to go back to WM6.5 right now. My wife got me the SUrround when it 1st came out. I have to admit it's been incredibly stable but I can't help but wonder if the hardware will run WM6.5. I would imagine the UI would have to tweaked due to the absence of some hard keys. I really just want internet sharing and voice guided GPS Bing Maps back and I would be happy enough for now.

I'm with you Wingnutt54 . Not being able to transfer files and documents from phone to PC and vice versa via direct USB connection is one of the biggest drawbacks of WP7. I "upgraded" from and HTC Fuze (Touch Pro) to the HTC Surround and really miss its flexibilty.
I am an IT Specialist and I like to carry all my files, documents and software handy at all times. What better place to have them than your phone? USB drives get lost all the time but you never lose your phone, do you?

wm 6.5 ( wince 5.2 ) does not compatible with WP7 (wince 6). at ANY part . os booted different way .. os working different way . in the end ..
1. no kernel
2. no drivers
3. no bootloader
also surround and half of surround ( mozart ) have NEW EXTERNAL TOUCH ( Cypress ) AND EXTERNAL SOUND CODEC ( TEXAS INSTRUMENTS ) hardware. so thats part will require drivers written from a ZERO . which is dead way if you does not have sources or chip papers .

I've tried dorothy and Uzard..
Generally Netfront isn't bad. The problem is it suffers from some strange out of memory error on certain pages. It's strange because in earlier versions (back in 2007/2008) this wasn't the case. But I think its worth a try nonetheless.
anyone know of any more? this can't be it
Hm I think that's it. I mean if you count them you will realise that you have the choice out of 6 different browsers. That's not really bad for a platform like Windows Mobile which isn't supported anymore.
Oh wait, we forgot opera mini. That would mean 7.

For Windows Mobile probably never. Development has more or less stopped since it's a dead os. Maybe for Windows Phone 7.
i wish they would put out an update for wm 6.5 -> 7
And I wish they would dispose of WP7 and restart to develop Windows Mobile.

Microsoft won't ever go back
Windows mobile was very open as far as what you could run on it, making it difficult to lock it down like android, wp7 or ios.
These companies are interested in making people have to buy all software to run on the device from their store
That's why I wont get WP7. I mean I hate google but in the end android is the only os for smartphones that is at least open to some extent.
Q: New Problem with Opera 9.7 Accessing m.facebook.com
Opera 9.7 was included in the ROM that I'm currently using and has worked fine with everything, except for the mobile Facebook site (m.facebook.com) within the last 2 weeks (FB must be changing things again ).
It will not allow me to access anything except to update my own status. Clicking on any link to view comments, photos, etc. (whether they're friends or my own) results in an error message saying that the page is not accessible at the moment or I do not have the proper permissions. Is there another version of Opera that will work?
Internet Explorer works OK, but the font in the already small comments box is so freakin' tiny, it makes having to use it a total PITA. I've been using FIM v2.8 for mostly everything, but viewing photos on it is difficult (since the photo size is un-scalable) and I can't copy/paste with FIM.
Any help with a browser replacement (Opera upgrade?), that will make the mobile FB site usable for me again, will be greatly appreciated! [I despise the official FB application and avoid it like the plague. There's no chance they will ever improve it for Windows Mobile, anyway.]
EDIT: Downloaded Opera Mini 5 and Opera 10; decided to try Mini 1st... What an improvement! The FB mobile site now works as it should.
Haven't tried 10 yet, but didn't I read something somewhere that people found that the zoom bar no longer works in that version? I may give it a go at some point, but for right now, I'm happy with Mini 5!
Thanks everyone!
Debbie
Why don't you try the final release of Opera 10? Opera 9.7 is really outdated. OK, 10 is old too but it's as recent as it gets on WM.

Hello,
Those who have purchased applications Marketplace, we continue to be able to download them again from the mobile device if you have any problems with them?. We paid for these applications, and can not obtain otherwise than by means of Marketplace ...
Greetings and thanks
i got an email about it today, very very disappointing that m$ are killing off wm6.x like this so soon.
im wondering what happens now with apps that have been paid for and updates to apps i use, it says its still going to be availiable on our phones but will there ever be any updates to apps or new ones anymore ?
its just far too soon to do this, in 2 or 3 years from now maybe.
time for a new phone i guess

Hello,
I find it unfortunate position of Microsoft to kill Windows Mobile without considering that we are still many users who are happy with this operating system. This position makes me think that never migraré the new Microsoft operating system, when I will have to switch to another platform other than Microsoft.
Regards,
You guys did not read carefully enough. They are going to shut down the Market Place website. If you read the notification again you will find out that access from your device will still be possible after the closing date.
Concerning My Phone this is no biggie for me. I was never really happy to deliberately give MS my personal data. I prefer a classic backup solution like SPB Backup.
According to recent market data from Gartner,Windows Mobile 6.x phones sales outpaced Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 sales in the first calendar quarter of 2011. That must be driving Microsoft crazy.
Oh my God
So sad
Let's go Adr

I don't know if this is really true but it does not matter. WP7 is simply useless to me. From a device of the year 2011 I expect:
- full multitasking (not some sort of multitasking like thing)
- all the other basic things like adding ringtones etc that even the dumbest phones could do years ago (I know MS will maybe introduce that with Mango but come on)
- full featured office solutions and not some functionality reduced Word, Excel and Powerpoint apps that MS thinks are sufficient for us
- let's not even talk about copy & paste
...
The list could go on forever. WP7 is simply a bad IOS copy and not worth one $. I will stick with my Xperia X1 and as soon as it dies I will get an Android device. MS just committed suicide with the introduction of WP7.

yep...DEF MOVE to Android. Thanks Microsoft!
That's... wrong. If I bought last big WM device like HD or HD Mini in late 2009 or early 2010, I wouldn't even have 2 years of fully functional phone . Shutting down MyPhone is a bad move. It' like they officially killed WM. A very good OS, still better then WP7. I think MS chose a wrong way with their OS, but... that doesn't matter to me now. I jumped off the WM ship and now I'm rocking Android, thanks to HD2 versatility.

Hello,
What Microsoft has made with these dirty tricks is that when you have to change my device (while work will continue with é, I love the WM 6.1) I switch to another operating system, but Windows never Phone 7.

It all depends on how you use the phone. Android, from the limited exposure to it that I had, is great for some things and sucks in others.
I use my phone for both home and work. I have many excel spreadsheets and word documents with tons of data in them that I use weekly. With Android, I would have to either migrate them to Google Docs, or buy applications that somehow work with Office. I couldn't even find a decent free RTF editor for my wife's Android phone, and RTF is an open format that's been a standard for ages.
With my WM phone I can create and send meeting minutes, action lists, and excel spreadsheets to my coworkers, when needed. No such thing with Android unless I buy 3rd party. (I can not use Google Docs for sharing work files).
I can use my phone offline with Wifi or Bluetooth for pretty much anything, including GPS (with a bluetooth receiver). With Android, who knows. I have a feeling that if I ever was without cell signal, the Android phone functionality would be severely limited. My WM phone can still be used as a full-blown PDA.
The biggest thing is, though, the Android phone is just too intergrated into Google services. If anyone stole an Android phone they could get immediate access to all of your email, Docs etc. With a Windows phone, they only access a dozen or so emails dowloaded since last time, and if you're smart all sensitive docs are hidden inside an encrypted container. The thief wouldn't be able to break into your Google accounts and read online documents. (Of course you would have to enter the password in browser each time you want to access Google from your phone but that's a small price to pay). I don't know if Android phone could be set up that way, but this would take away a huge part of what makes Android a unique experience.
Not saying that WM >>>> Android, just that it's not a platform to write off just yet. Personally I will strongly consider the both the WM7 and Android when it is time to upgrade my phone the next year.
Looks like WM has lost against ANdroid and iPhone
But to be honest, i never really used the Microsoft MyPhone Service and the Marketplace as there are lots of (also free) alternatives when you search the web.
Yeah i know...it has always been a little bit more tricky to find good software on the web, but i was always satified.
I only used the MyPhone for backing up my SMS. Therefor i now use Cloud SMS backup which is very useful.
well that is so bad from microsoft. they realy have a micro brain. cant thinks abt us who are with ms from so many years . they spoiled the os . then committed sucide in frnt of android. that too is thier mistake only. they paid the developers. then why would any one go for ms.
now **** even they cant see us living with dead os.
i will never buy a ms again

That's quite a point you're making there. I went to Austria in winter with my HD2 and Android installed on it. Of course I had to switch off data because of ridiculous prices of traffic in roaming. And then my phone simply became... useless. I couldn't even open up few what you can think offline apps, cause they wanted to check license (of course by using internet connection)! Android is really data-needing.
I ended up by flashing WM (I had my laptop) ASAP. And guess what. It was more functional than Android.
That's why I have never been very fond of those Android devices. It starts with the activation of the device after you bought it. It's just ridiculous, a device that costs several 100 $ does not work decently without a google account. My WM device belongs to me without MS telling me what I can do and what I don't. Sad they have chosen the same way as google and Apple with WP7.
Hi
My father got a bunch of Lumia 800s as some sort of gift when he switched ISP contract but basically don't use them and asked me whether they might be able to run Android.
The only thing substantial that came up while searching was this youtube clip:
youtu.be/f4b_5i2u_HM
but no instructions or links to further resources. It is relatively recent, so I guess it should mean that there are some data on it somewhere?
That's only an app that makes it look like You use Android on it. A skin. Got nothing to do with Android. I was trying few of these apps. Just to check their look. Check the Marketplace. It's full of these apps. Not a big thing and they are good for nothing.
Fake video!

The App is called FunDroid. Just met it today again after I got a second Lumia 800 and checked the MarketPlace on it.

I know Haret. It was made to run Android on Windows Mobile. Not Windows Phone. I was using it on several WM devices I had.
The app that is shown in the mentioned video is the FunFroid app, that can be found in MarketPlace and got nothing to do with the Android OS itself. Just an app that looks like an Android homescreen and can launch some apps. Not Android apps, only the WP system apps like Phone, Browser, Messages. It only contains shortcuts to them.
