The official skype client freezes on the welcome screen. I don't need microphone or camera, but all of my friends are on skype.
Are there any other apps that could possibly give me access?

Are you sure it's freezing?
I think the buttons are mostly hidden by the status bar....press here and you can get it to continue

You can chat via skype using using it

The poster above ia correct however, you just haveto take your time pressing all the buttons...
I installed IMO Instant Messenger this morning, and used it for skype chat an hour later. Worked like a charm, very fluid and easy to use. You can also input all your other chats like: yahoo, msn, facebook, gtalk ect....worked great!

During a conversation with someone in Google Talk, just tap the camera icon to the right.

if with video chat you intend the same as videocall,I use gtalk.. have also tried tango and fring, but gtalk is just perfect.. The a/v quality is just awesome. Also, the fact of being able to videocall everyone with a laptop (as gtalk is integrated on gmail web interface) is really nice.. For mobile cross platform a/v calls, I prefer using Tango.
How do I video chat on the Tab?
Pixelatedly!
I tried Google Talk once and now everytime I want to sign in it shows me as being offline. Have you experienced that as well?

no its the TALK application in your tab, if the list is empty when you open the app, you need to add some contacts and wait for them to be online.

Other them Display brightness, Thumb Keyboard, Google Services and Gallery, why are the others running? I imagine that secphone and Samsung Push Service are required to make the phone work and have my mail pushed. Gps Navigator shows restarting all the time until I turn in on then goes in process. What of those should be frozed as I dont use them at leased for now unless other app are using them.
Those are system apps which are meant to be run by default. If you close most of them, your phone might not function properly like lets say when you get an email or a message, the notification will not be shown if they are force stopped.
Yes, I agree, some apps like Samsung Apps, Maps...etc keep running when you hardly use them.
If its still a pain for u to have these apps running, Use Root Explorer to freeze/Uninstall those apps or just add ".bak" extension to the apk incase if you will ever need these apps.

Emoji's are intercepted somewhere in the process and obliterated by gv and will come out and be recieved as little question mark boxes every time. I spent all night figuring out my lack of emoji ability. Just a heads up to everyone . So you must disable gv integration if you want to send/recieve emojis. But note that emojis can still be seen with gv on like a website, just not sent through sms
Are you rooted, if so. Its a non issue.

Emoji font updater (might be buried in Themes & apps) & the keyboard I posted in Themes & apps section will have you set system wide.

Do we still have to use a different keyboard to insert emojis?

Yes.
Okay I will try to explain what I am looking for very simply and very clearly so that I am not misunderstood.
There are many apps for messaging out there, but all there focus seems on is quick replying and halo type windows.
My requirement is however different, I get messages mostly from promotion companies and stuff alike, I use web-based tools to do quick messaging, but I have other reasons that I cannot disable promotional messages (DND) on my phone.
Generally I just ignore the notification, But When I was looking for a previous text sent from a friend regarding his address, I got lost in the **** pile of messages in my phone, So I thought that I should look for an app that can Delete a message straight from notification and I don't get a clutter in my inbox.
The feature I am talking about is present in AquaMail but it is only for e-mails, I want similar feature in normal SMSs.
I am attaching a ScreenShot to give you an idea of what I am looking for (look for the second notification)

No One? Really? Help me out Please.....
I used this app for years and it was perfect. Easy to use, always worked, and I loved it. I went to get it after a phone issue and I cannot find it.
SMS Scheduler could scheduled texts when ever i needed. It could also have certain texts on schedules like every monday at 2:00. It was perfect.
I believe it was called SMS Scheduler and it looked like the photos below. If anyone has it or can show me where to get it. Thank You!

Alternative good app for SMS, containing the desired feature:
Yaata
Yaata messaging app does that very well
You can use Textra SMS app
I actually found it but thanks guys!
Here it is in case anyone would like to try it.
you could simply use apps like MACRODROID to schedule everything, even sms...... and it's more powerful because it's not time related, but triggers that can send sms are almost infinite
thanks guys!
I just made a post about a similar app at https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/very-smart-text-message-automation-app.4304855/.
