Hello everyone.
I was wondering if anyone had found a way to mount the SD card via a third party USB cable, and not with the OEM data cable. Is there any way to bypass this restriction? It's frustrating to have to lug around the bulky OEM cable, when transferring data over the retractable cable I have would be much simpler. I'm referring to something similar to the "Resupported" app on jailbroken iPhones (which allows you to use third-party TV out and other cables with the iPhone, against the wishes of Apple).
Any help you can shed on this topic would be greatly appreciated.
Bump
I'm still trying to find an answer to this issue, and have searched these boards extensively for a solution, but none has been presented. Is there no one who can shed some light on this for me?

Actually, I use ES File explorer on my phone and connect to shares on my PC's via wifi to transfer files back and forth between them.
Edit: You could also use SwiFTP to setup a ftp server on your phone and then connect to it from your pc via wifi.
Hi, since it is micro usb(correct me if im wrong), I could use anything that have same wiring position(eg, ground, data,+5v etc.).. I use LG USB cable at the office and lug around couple USB(OEM) cables at home. I don't have any problem, but haven't yet tested the retractable one.
I use Nokia Micro USB Cable in my office and its work fine as OEM ...
but Now, i found another method "Android Manager Wifi" which is free in the market, its really better then USB method .. no wire needed anymore !
Mine works fine with any old cable ... never had a problem.
u could use wifi file explorer, it`s a paid app , and u can see all files in the phone in your browser, it`s very easy to use!
I've never had a problem using a non-stock usb cable. I've used several different cables for different phones (hell my friends BB Torch, i think it was, worked just fine), digital camera, I even bought a 6" micro usb cable from ebay for 1.99 shipped and it worked just fine (truth be told the transfer + charging speeds are slower, but otherwise works just fine)
When I"m too lazy to go dig out one of my cables, I also use ES File Explorer to transfer files back and forth on my network. No issues there either, provided you set up your network right and are only trying to access shared folders
edit
if you're using astro file manager already, there's an SMB module you can add to it for Samba support (networking), although i still prefer ES File manager myself. Both are free though!

I know the Titan doesn't support USB Host mode, but I've heard there were alternatives like using CF Cards or something. Can anyone give me more details or point me in the direction of how to achieve this? Instead of buying a microSD card, I wouldn't mind just using one of my external HD to hold my stuff. It would be cool to read data off of flashdrives too.
I've never heard mention of any possibilities of USB host on the mogul. If someone does make a USB host CF card (never heard of one), I don't think you're going to find any way to interface it with the mogul. And the mogul probably wouldn't be able to power an external hdd, so you'd have to have a power supply and be tethered to the wall. At that point, you might as well carry a laptop around and store things on it, and just forget about USB host on the mogul.
If I had to guess I think you would see a Bluetooth harddrive before you saw anything like that.

That is already on the way...
http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/products/consumer_electronics/DAVE/
theoretically it could be done with MicroSDIO, but i dont know if the mogul supports SDIO
plus i doubt anyone will make a USB controller in an MicroSDIO card, lol
wow that bluetooth harddrive looks promising, but the speed must suck :/. yea using a laptop would work, but its still too big and uses a lot more power. i had this idea, run mobiletorrent on the phone attached to a harddrive. it would use less power and its still smaller than a laptop.
How much storeage do you need?
I looked at the bluetooth drive also and it looks cool, and probably slow since i think bluetooth is ~700kbps, sort of like the speed you get beaming from one to another with bluetooth, which I do to and from my laptop now and it is kind of creepy slow. If you need more than the 8gigs that a microSD can do for now then that might be the way,,,,,,wait,,,,I remember seeing a shared WiFi drive some place, that would be lots faster i bet.
Im installing my tablet in my cars dash,
Im trying to find a Micro sd card extension cable so that I can easily connect a memory card to the tablet without taking the whole dash apart.
The dash kit I bought came with a couple regular SD extension cables which do me no good. I have no luck searching for these cables online. All I can find are wholesalers and I dont need 1,000 of them.
Anyone know where to find one? Maybe they are called something different than micro sd extension cable or something.
Wow
the only SD extension cables I've seen have been really pricy. I've never seen micro SD extension cables.
I know this isn't what you're looking for, but the app Wifi filetransfer / wifi file explorer pro will at least let you transfer files to the card/tablet while it's installed.
Not perfect, but better then nothing.
Hi,
I'm currently looking for the same thing as I installed my old HTC HD2 in my car and need to access easily the microsd...
I'll keep you updated if I find anything.
As said above, Wifi File Explorer Pro works great. I use it on my phone often.
Sent from my HTC Flyer using XDA Premium App.
Or sugarsync or dropbox , etc. much easier than a cable.............
I ended up trying the "software data cable" app and it worked really well.
I had been using drop box for ebooks, apk's, music etc.. but larger files took way to long to upload, I had no idea there was better ways.
Thanks
That app is far more clunky than ES File Explorer for Android, but it gets the job done.
Hi, I'm looking also this extension card cable and I've seen this:
http://www.befr.ebay.be/itm/Micro-S...aphy_MemoryCardReaders_RL&hash=item19d0051fdf
Do you think it can help?
it's not for a table, it's too avoid disassemble the device.
Thnks.
wow good find. Im also going to install my view in my card. I dont need this for that though because I am going to make it removable, though that thing is pretty cool.
You can get better and cheaper here....... if you are willing to buy 1000 at a whack...
http://www.alibaba.com/showroom/micro-sd-card-extension-cable.html
I finally found mine here:
http://www.jqsabers.com/parts/
You have to scroll down to find it.
Yes don't know how I went here as it is a Star Wars fan site
Ordered one extension cable, works great on my HD2!
Thanks for the link...gonna dashmount my old Sensation 4G as a media player (otherwise useless since T-Mobile changed their roaming policies). I'm ordering two...because I'll probably destroy the first one while trying to adapt it to let me use full-size SD cards as the media.
I did a search and found that no one has posted this problem on this forum - I'm the only one ??
My prime use to hooked up with my PC with no problems. At some point recently (I'm thinking the recent ICS update) my PC & Prime had a parting of ways. Now I plug in the Prime and get 'USB device not recognized'.
Downloaded and ran Asus Sync hoping that a driver vanished but no luck.
I'm running Windows 7 (64 bit). Has anyone else noticed the same problem and if so - how did you fix it ?
Thanks
I have three computers, and none of them even recognize my prime anymore, not even in Device Manager. This started after I got it back from RMA.
I, myself, am not particularly concerned about it, since I'm just waiting for the Infinity to come out; the Prime I will just pass on to a family member. If the Infinity was going to be released in the far flung future, I'd send it back.

Thanks
I Have the problem as well...thought it was the cable but half happy to see it probably isnt
hey everyone, and I'm so happy to see this thread, but have you guys had similar issues to Mines?
Hello Everyone, I'll try to short and to the point. I've been searching xda/google/androidcentral on and off since maybe early Februrary and still nothing, maybe someone has some awesome insight.
So my computer won't detect my TP anymore for file transfer. It did maybe the first month or so though.
Here's what I've tried so far, with no luck.
- Different Computers - Different Cables - New Asus Brand OEM USB Cable - Aftermarket USB Cable - Different USB Ports (Front and Back of Computer) - USB Debugging Mode - Uninstalled Drivers on my PC to try and get table to re-install it. - Factory Reset (multiple times with and without auto-backup) - Connecting From KeyboardDock to Computer
I convinced my cousin to buy a TP and Dock the other week so I also got to try some extra stuff.
- I plugged His TP with His USB cable to His PC and it connected fine.
- I plugged His TP with His USB cable to MY PC and it connected fine.
- I plugged MY TP with His USB cable to His PC and it wouldn't detect.
- I plugged MY TP with His USB cable to MY PC and it wouldn't detect.
I also tried his TP with my USB cables (both oem and aftermarket) on my PC and it connected fine.
Here's Some additional Info, that may be helpful.
I was previously able to connect to my HDMI ports on my TV via micro HDMI, but that does not work anymore either.
I've seen a few people mention serial numbers, so here's some Info, not sure if it's the correct info.
My TP - TF201-B1-CG - S/N starts with a "B" His TP - TF201-B1-GR - S/N starts with a "C"
I thank you all for your time and any insight is much appreciated.
Called ASUS support - I'm the first that they have ever heard that problem. They suggested a factory reset but first I must back the data up. Never done a factory reset, I hope Voodoo will keep the root.
When I finally try it - I'll let you know what happens.
Cool thanks NewbieKeepItSimple, I hope we get this sorted ou!
Hey everyone, I have some more interesting info regarding the USB issue. I didn't want to suspect this as a problem, but yea it looks like it may be an actual bad port on the TFP itself.
My reasoning is that I got my free GPS dongle in the mail today and it won't work. Anyone else test this yet?
Another Question, as far as RMAs go, do we HAVE to call in? Anyone know for sure? I know there's forums, but trying to kill 2 birds with 1 stone.

But you guys are charging fine? Just not connecting to the PC's? Have you had a good look at the connectors both on the cable and the Prime, nothing obvious? You all have uninstalled and re-installed the drivers right? Or maybe tried the universal naked driver utility?

Yep, charges fine. I couldn't see anything obviously wrong with cables and connectors.
As far as trying universal naked driver, I'm pretty sure drivers aren't the issue since I tried a whole different TFP with the same computers and cables (stated above) and it connected and installed the drivers correctly.

My Prime was sync'd at work with my contacts and I put movies on from my home PC. Now neither PC can communicate with the Prime.
There is somethings with the Prime and USB ports that seem a little goofy. I have a USB memory on my keychain that I use for my work files. One of the things I wanted to do with the Prime is access and work on my files during business trips. The work USB memory is 4GB Fat 32 but the Prime can't see it even though all other computers can see it. Plug in an older 2GB memory - the Prime can see it. Plug in my Apple iPhone - the Prime can see it. Plug in some other USB memories no problem but my work USB is invisible.
I really can't see any reason for the Prime to suddenly become invisible to computers but I will try the factory reset once I get my memory 64GB SDcard next week.

that's so frustrating. factors reset didn't work for me but I'm wishing luck to you.
Ok.. something to try before going directly to wiping your Prime...
First, try plugging it into a different USB port. This will cause the PC to try and load a new driver.
If that fails, click Start, right click on Computer and select Manage. Look for an entry called "Portable Devices" and under that "Transformer Prime TF201".
If you don't have that at all, then the system has failed to identify the device entirely.. try it with another PC (take it to a Best Buy and plug it in.. ). If it fails there, then something has changed in your Prime. If you've flashed the ROM, it's possible that's the problem.
If you DO see the entry, but the PC isn't recognising it - right click on the entry for the Prime and select 'Uninstall'. On the dialogue box that pops up, check "Delete the driver software for this device" and let it do its thing.
Unplug the Prime, then plug it back in. It should download a new driver for the Prime. Hopefully this will fix the problem.
I've never heard of an Android device's ADB USB port failing - it's entirely possible of course - but we have five here.. which is pretty amazing.

I'm not holding out much hope either but who knows. The ASUS is rooted but I haven't flashed anything. Another tack I tried is using the just the tablet then keyboard connection but both give the same results.
If I'm connecting to two different spots that on the Prime (dock/Tablet) and there are two different interfacing chip sets involved. Maybe it is a software bug that is screwing up how the Prime addresses the USB (protocol).

hmm even if it was 2 different chip sets it'd still have to go through the main one. it'd be great if it was software based issue

Hi, anyone know how to make USB OTG work on stock ROM ? Thanks
anyone know ?
I don't know if it's possible even if rooted. If you want to connect a flash drive, have you considered a wireless reader? The Kingston MobileLite works great with both my HD8.9 and HDX7. The RavPower reader sounds good too...
CC
This is also useful if you need additional storage: http://www.sandisk.com/products/wireless/flash-drive/
Oh, and I think Amazon disabled USB OTG in the kernel, for whatever reason.
I just got a Kindle hdx 7 and very disappointed that no usb host ability. Is possibly anyone working on a kernel that will support it? I am rooted.
Very interested to know if any progress has been made. Anyone? Is it possible to create some sort of work-around?
You guys are looking for something that is a long way out at best. Device is going to need a custom kernel to have any hope of usb OTG. The problem with that is, nobody is going to even look at custom kernels till maybe when we can adb in fastboot or the bootloader gets unlocked.
I use a backup battery / wireless router / wifi SD reader / travel router device for extra storage. Turn it on, browse to it from ES Explorer. Voila, just move the files over.
There's also WiFi Explorer Pro, if you want to do it to a PC.

I keep a 32 GB MicroSD (class 6, my old card for my phone) with an SD adapter in this device semi-permanently for quick transfers.
Thanks, im going on a long trip so extra storage would be cool, but as it would be the only time i would use it i dont think i can justify 20 bucks on it. shame about otg cuz a big jumpdrive filled with content would be awesome .

The SanDisk Ultra Dual USB Drive comes with a regular USB port on one hand, and a microUSB one – on the other. So when you want to move some files from your mobile device, simply connect the SanDisk’s device to a microUSB port and copy all the photos and videos you want. Then, connect the same device using a regular USB port to a computer and make a local copy of those files.
I disagree. I don't think it's purpose is to move files between PC and phone. I think it's about having a pendrive that's also accessible via phone. Plus connecting the phone to YOUR computer is easy enough, but it's not that simple in libraries, airports, other people's houses etc. If I was using a pendrive I'd buy it. But I don't.

I would its like the same as using a USB OTG cable but not having to have the cable
for the price, I'd rather just get a normal flash drive thats cheaper and use the otg cable. I already have one, and it's not really inconvenient.
If you have proper cables and don't mind carrying them, then this is kind of redundant, if you don't have cables, then this is as simple as it gets, albeit little more expensive. But frankly, I would never use it just to copy files to computer, the cable comes with phone for free and nothing beats dragging files with mouse from one drive to another on the computer. But if you want to backup your files or make room for new on the go, then I could see this as being useful.
I ask because you could use something like airdroid or something.
Sent from my SM-N900T using Tapatalk
Yeah, but that will only work if you have:
1. good signal
2. really unlimited data plan.
Personally I don't see reason to backup few small files, since you can get SD card for cheap and store it on the phone memory and SD card as backup. I'm talking for example about being on vacation and actually running out of memory due to picture and video taking, where you need to offload gigabytes of data, where good signal and unlimited data could be completely out of question. Actually I may be taking trip to China this summer and could be facing this particular issue for real and any cloud type solution is not going to work at all. On my home turf I have access to computers daily, so again cloud services are pretty much useless, even if I had unlimited data, which I don't. I know Google and others are trying to sell us on cloud storage solutions, instead of physical storage, but in certain situations above limitations can not be overcome.

I use airdroid about 4-5 times/day. I log in using the web interface and transfer files from my laptop to my device. If the device is sitting next to my laptop, how bad can the signal be?
