Screen/LCD Possible 2 different types of displays/qualities?

Hello, I just got a Thunderbolt through my work and I noticed the screen tends to wash out at angles. I had this same problem with my T-Mobile HTC Glacier or MT4G. It turned out to be 2 different vendors Sharp and Sony displays being used in this model. Once I got the good display it was a noticeable difference in the quality of the better display vs the bad one. Direct viewing from straight on is ok just as it was on the HTC Glacier. So I just wonder if anyone might have a good one and could post some pics to show.
Here is my original thread for the HTC Glacier with the Screen issues. There are some pictures and videos to compare the differences. I'm seeing some washing out at angles, especially around the clock digits where this problem is easily seen.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=863679
Here are some pictures of mine with the Sharp screen. The noticeable areas are the clock widget black areas where they flip.
I'd say it's possible. I'm sure they have more than one place that manufactures the devices. There's been some variability in the build quality of the devices, so it's not too far fetched.
I don't have a camera other than my phone to take pictures, though. It looks like a really good display to me and doesn't "wash out"
You're right there are two displays. I went to the store last week to compare my phone with the display. Because I used to have the mytouch 4g and it took three tries to get one with a nice display. So I was surprise, when I saw the display model and colors were not as vibrant as mine. Man did I get Lucky, first try and it's a winner.
This is interesting. I ran a "dmesg |grep panel" and it returned sharp. I wonder if anyone would get Sony.
Mine is noticeably worse than my MT4G that had the good screen.

If you ask me, there is no doubt that there are two panels for this device. My first TBolt (which had several problems) had a really bad screen and I complained about it in another thread like this one. I had it exchanged and the new one is VERY much better. The first one was not crisp, colors were bad, looked blown out next to my DInc OLED. The replacement is crisp and the colors are beautiful.
I didn't get a chance to compare side-by-side, but everyone who had seen my first one, even my wife who is pretty oblivious about these things, would say that the new one is dramatically better.

Thanks, could some of you with good screens do a dmesg in terminal and report if you have a sharp or Sony panel. Make sure you restart then immediately run the terminal and dmesg command. Mine is a sharp so I'm thinking it is the bad display. Also if you can post some pictures of the screen from the side at extreme angles.
I will try to take some pictures of mine and post them tomorrow.
Before some of you start stating your opinions about looking at the screen at angles, yes there are situations where you are viewing at angles. Also it has been proven at least in the MT4G with the bad sharp display that the colors are not as vivid as with the sony screen even when looking straight on.
Mine is made in Taiwan. If you have a good one post where it was made please.
Mine returned Sharp.. and the screen is much better than my OG droid and my wife's fasicnate. I can read this post at ~160ish degrees, sooo.. no idea

Reading this board may not be enough to tell. I will be interested to see if anyone has a Sony screen to compare.
The point is, everything I do on this phone can be done at that angle, in relation to using the screen. Colors do not change, only the brightness, as to be expected from a gloss screen (and gloss screen protector).
I personally think that shows a quality screen.
Definitely not something to worry about.
FYI : I have my dpi set to 200 if that matters

Here are some more pictures which stand out more with green colors. You can really tell the difference as you tilt to angles and the deep green contrast is lost and it is hard to define the icons. The middle picture is taken from straight on and you can see the difference. I think on the Good Sony displays there will be no difference when looking from angles. I really suspect that the same display problems are following from HTC and the MT4G.
Is there any way to tell my looking at the hardware number what screen we have?

No I doubt it, we could never tell with the MT4G. The only one thing that seemed to hold true in the beginning was the ones made in China had a higher percentage of the good screens and more of the ones made in Taiwan had the more of the bad ones.
i have a sharp panel as well. i'm no connoisseur apparently because i think my screen looks just as good as my old incredible.
I have one made in taiwan and it is essentially flawless, only thing wrong with it is 2 very tiny dots of light leak which can only be seen in pitch black

Odd, mine is made in Taiwan, are all bolts produced there now?
dmesg says sharp panel, but I have no complaints about viewing angle or contrast after quite a bit of fiddling with it and trying to find something to whine about.
I have a sharp panel and it's better than the display model at my local store. I used to own a mytouch 4g, it took three tries to get a good display. And the good display was made in china. My TB is made in Taiwan.
This would explain why some claim to have gorilla glass style display that can't be scratched and others are getting scratches from car keys.
My first phone the digitizer went out after a drop out of the car (no glass broken or cosmetic issues just said touch panel- fail) and the second phone has light leakage not just at the bottom but at the corners too. There is a gap at the right corner for whatever to get into my phone.
I want to know if there is a different 'nicer' panel. It seems quite a few people are popping up with broken digitizers...
The phone I have is a Sharp lq043y1dx04
How do I know? Because I busted mine open to try and fix my broken digitizer. You can see pics and read the story in my post "Anyone want to see the inside of a thunderbolt?"
Still no replacements out there :-(
Digitizer or LCD
I have not taken this phone apart. But I did replace the digitizer on the HTC INC. The Digitizer is separate from the LCD in that phone. Does anyone know if the Digitizer is separate in the Thunderbolt? If so, it does not matter who the manufacturer of the LCD is.
I to agree with this thread that the digitizer on the Thunderrbolt is very easily scratched especially compared to the HTC INC.

[Q] Blue tint problem?

I was in the o2 shop today playing about with the Galaxy S2 and I noticed that if I angled the screen slightly, everything would get a blue tint to it. This was most noticeable when there is a lot on white on the screen.
Is this a common problem with the new handset, as I remember reading a similar thing with the older super amoled panels?
I loved the phone, but was put off by the blue tint.
Thanks.
I've actually noticed this myself with a phone I bought from phones4u (avoid them at all costs). It's very odd I thought for SAMOLED since I thought they're not meant to have viewing angle issues like LCD and my old, original Galaxy S certainly doesn't have this issue. Also noticed slightly yellow whites. I got another SGSII from o2 (with bad GPS issues) that had a better screen but I must say - the evenness was a bit off and that was a big surprise given the SGSII is meant to have SAMOLED+ which is technically "better".
I'm beginning to think a bad first batch - i.e. rushed manufacturing.

Even though its supposed to have good viewing angles, its not supposed to be extreme like the iphone 4, there still will be a point with samoled that you will start to see a little distortion.. The blue tinge is on the first galaxy phones too, its something that is inherent with samoleds... You want to worry when you have the screen on full brightness and you see any yellow... But you will see the whites go a bit yellow when the brightness is low. samoleds have their own DNA and everyone is made differently. I do not think this batch was rushed at all, i actually think this is a better first batch than the first Nexus S batch, there was returns flying back from everywhere. I had 4 different NS myself..
I have also gone through 3 SGS2's but rightly so, two had a low hepatic feedback and press area on the back button and one had the piss yellow screen of death
But it worked out better for me because I returned the P4U one for 530 and bought an O2 one for 399. So faulty phones really do save you money;P
JD
Very strange. I have ordered one from o2 online to be delivered in 30 days time as I have already got a contract with Orange that doesn't run out for 2 months and I wanted to take up the discounted line rental offer thats running at mo.
Hopefully most of the problems will be sorted by the time I get mine
P.S. I wouldn't use Phones4U either. Heard quite a few horror stories about them.
Anyone else noticed a blue or yellow tint ?
Thanks

The one I played with today had quite severe blue tint with minimal movement of the handset.
Have yet to see what the yellow tint is like.
I'm sure I read in a review that Samsung have put in an option to change the colour balance on the Galaxy S2 ?
I hadn't noticed this until you stated it in this thread, and to be honest I can only see it when there's a white background. Personally, I don't think there are issues that detract from the user experience, and that's all that matters!
The Samsung Galaxy S II is still by far the best phone in the market right now.

Yes they have,
There is 3 presets,
One is like a nexus s pre 2.3.3 colour, and one is a post nexus 2.3.3 and one is somewhere in the middle But what your seeing is something not linked to the colour balance, your seeing what is a screen defect. But a blue hue is quite normal and not so off putting as a piss yellow hue The blue hue was desirable on the galaxy S. The iPhone 4 will have better white replication than the samoleds due to that its a LCD screen, But the blacks will always be better on the samoled

Check my topic " different screens??? or what is this???" here in de Q&a. You see 2 different sgs2 next to eachother, one with blue tint, other not.
Mine has the blue ish thing too, but to me it seems more like a coating?
Last night I lifted my Phone from my desk on low battery and the screen went very strange and turned to a completely washed out green/blue colour. I hit the lock button and then unlocked again and it all went back to normal. Very strange.

I have noticed this on the Galaxy s2 I was looking at in the store yesterday.
If I tilted the screen only about 15-20 degrees whites would appear blue. It realy put me off.
That was the only model they had there though, so I could not check if it was a defect specific to that one piece.

Just a suggestion: it could be due to the gorilla glass. Could be a refractive property when viewed at an angle.

I have just purchased this handset on o2. Much better in the hand. I have a slight blue tint, but no other defects that I have noticed yet.
Am loving it so far.
I only have KE2 on my handset. Kies says its the latest version, but I have been reading about KE7?
Can someone point me to the correct thread please. Am very new to Android so haven't a clue really lol.
Thanks.

Stick to KE2 man. I had KE7 loaded at one point and battery life was poor.

Any updates on this?
My replacement screen exhibits the same issue. Except mine becomes apparent while only tilting the phone 3 degrees or more off centre.
[edit] I can't post video links yet, but if you search "Galaxy s2 screen tint comparison" on YouTube, the first 20 seconds of the video highlights the issue.

[Q] Blurry screen while scrolling?

hello community,
does anyone beside me notice the screen going blurry while scrolling? best seen at websites with white background and dark letters. it really gives me headaches.
also noticeable while on websites is, that it's not only blurry but also graphics get pixelated everytime I scroll and resharp everytime when scrolling stops.
is this something special about the samoled+? bad refreshrate? maybe fixable? I'm using the phone rooted with normal ke2 firmware and kernel.
thx for your opinions.
I've gone through 4 (FOUR) Samsung Galaxy S2's with replacements due to various issues (overheating, restarting, corrupted screen) And on ALL of them, they blur with fast movement on the screen, especially noticeable, as you said, when it's dark text against a white background. This is purely becuause of the slow response time on the screen. It's a hardware issue, nothing you can do it about it.
Also graphics get pixellated when scrolling as the android OS lowers the quality of graphics while scrolling to make scrolling smoother.
These aren't really problems. Everyone is experiencing the same things as you and I. If anyone says otherwise it's purely because they can't notice it due to bad eyes or whatever but I assure you, it's perfectly normal.
thx for your quick response.
I feared that it's disappointing for such an expensive device. to me, it's kinda like looking at a bade configured screen or something like that.
so no weapon against a low response time, but graphics getting pixelated on a dual-core-monster ... i can go with that on weaker devices, but on this phone ... do you think it's worth asking if somebody knows how to disable that android "feature"?
and let me guess that other phone-screens (like LG optimus speed, which would be the nearest to an alternative) have that blurry problem too ... ?
thx again and feeling sorry for your 4 phones. but you still stick with samsung!
Noticed it too... However it is better here than on the incredible s I had for a couple of days.
With the graphical issue you mean the pictures getting bigger pixels when touching the screen huh?
Are you also having alot of these chess-like patterns while scrolling? Like on the iphone. Is this the browser that does it?
Yeah I was disappointed when I noticed the slow response time myself, especially considering this is a top end device.
I can't say if other comparable devices would have the slow response/blurry screen aswell as manufacturers always exaggerate the specs of screens to 'best case scenario' results, which is completely unrealistic. For example, Samsung states that the screen on the Galaxy S2 has a response time of 0.001ms, which if true, there would be absolutely no hint of blurring at all, however, as I said, they'd of measured it in a best case scenario, they were most likely giving the response time for GTG (or grey to grey, the time it takes for a pixel to turn from grey, to white then back to grey) and with the brightness set to max, I'd imagine 0.001ms wouldn't be far off the true result. However, they should really test BTB, or black to black, which is the time it takes for a pixel to turn from black, to white to black again, and this is the figure that Samsung did not quote, as it's a lot slower than 0.001ms (hence why black text on a white background shows noticeable amounts of blurring). But by my testing, I'd put the screen realistically, closer to 6ms.
And about the graphics turning to lower quality when scrolling, technically yes, this could be 'fixed' as its a software issue.
And yeah I'm sticking with Samsung, after I went through all those replacements, I finally got a decent one that has no issues (touch wood).
correct, as soon as the screen notices your finger it pixels the graphics ... argh! someone should disable that. it's 2011 and powerful enough!
and yes, chess patterns here too. even on less complex sites. never noticed that before in any preview-videos though. so again

thx for that explanation. for the pixel-thing I'll try to ask the developers here. at least it's android, so most things could possibly be done

Got a new S2 is everyone's screen like this ?

Picked up a Galaxy S2 on the weekend so been playing around with it as you do when you have a new toy.
Come from a Desire HD..
Just wanted to ask i used Miui on the Desire with a black and grey theme...
So set this phone up the same, love the vibrant colours etc but mine's really struggling with Grey's so much so the theme i loved on my Desire HD lookes really naff on this Galaxy..
I've downloaded some black and white photo's this morning and the phone just doesn't seem to display them very well, colours are stunning the blue's greens really vibrant but the only way i can describe the grey's is they almost have a blue hue like looking at a photo negative..
My question is are all S2's like this and is it a price to pay for the vibrancy in other colours, or is there something wrong with my one...
Thanks
First of all welcome to the S2 forum. There seem to be a few problems regarding the S2 screen different users complaining of different faults. I know what you mean with yours mine seems to have a yellow tinge on greys. I downloaded the voodoo screen tuning app off the market (root needed), and i must say that it is superb. Download it and give it a try.
Ricey
Using the SM2 A2 Line setting massively improved the black/white/grey contrast...
Thanks...
Just thought i would add that if someone thinks there screen doesn't look right compare it to another S2..
I did and then went back into Carphone Warehouse and they agreed it wasn't right and have given me another S2 and this one is much much better...
Second samsung i've purchased and im not having much luck, always had HTC's for years trouble free, bought my Daughter an S2 for xmas and thats currently away being repaired (you can't hear her without the loud speaker on during a call)
And mine defo had a dodgy screen...
So 1 good S2 out of 3 supplied so far what odds on that...
Happy with this one though the screen is awesome...
mine isn't like this...

Black spots/ink marks

Hi!
Got my S3 few days ago, and already in first evening noticed annoying black spots in bottom of screen. At first thought that I broken it, but searching found many threads about this issue.
As i understand practically everyone has them, there's just difference in quantity.
I took picture of my screen displaying black screen in dark:
i.imgur.com/QYZEI.jpg (add http, as i cant submit links, i'm new here
What do you think? Guy at shop said that this is normal amoled issue.
I wouldn't mind about little spots, as i cant really see them, but those lines on right are really visible when watching videos in dark, even in not complete darkness, and is really annoying.

I would say exchange it. I have this issue too but only visible when I'm in very dark environment lighting. And it only visible when im running gray background too. I have 2 ink mark visible to eyes and 3 very small one which have to squint my eyes.

I think you'd be lucky if they changed it. I've seen much worse - mine, for example. Unless you always use your phone in the dark I wouldn't worry IIWY.
Saw some pictures with muck less spots, so i thought that mine has lot.
I guess the I'll have to live with it.
Although this doesn't seem normal if you take into account price tag of this phone.
This seems to be common issue with phones using the amoled display. As long as it doesnt cause problems during normal usage of the phone, it will most likely not get replaced. There is a very high possibility that the replacement will also have the same issue.
Yours are fine, I've seen worse from my friends S3.
I would rather having this problem over black crush/pixelation. Driving me crazy. Hopefully it'll be fixed by software update since screen filter app's able to solve it.
