I'm a new Galaxy S II (and new Android) user, and am a bit disappointed in the battery life of my new phone. It was running down extremely quickly yesterday, only lasting about 12 hours with relatively normal use (sending half a dozen texts, downloading 2 apps, checking Facebook and Twitter once an hour or so for a couple of minutes throughout the day). I allowed the phone to discharge completely and charged it fully last night, but this morning nothing seems to have improved. I burned up 10% of the battery in half an hour sending 2 texts, checking my emails, Facebook and Twitter and downloading and trying out a couple of apps.
I'm anxious to know if there's a bit of a burn-in time with the battery on this thing - does it get better after a few charges? I see a lot of people saying they can have the phone on for a few days in some cases, but that's definitely not my experience thus far.
I've installed JuiceDefender (balanced profile), AutoKiller Memory and Advanced Task Killer to try to sort things out but none of them seem to having too much effect and to be quite honest I'd rather not have to compromise my experience by running a number of apps like this to try to extend my battery life at all (nor do I want to have to turn the brightness right down to an unusable level, or set black wallpapers for example).
Does anyone have any real advice on this? I'm starting to think that switching ROMs might be worthwhile? I see that the leaked 2.3.4 ROM seems to have better battery life - is this correct? I'm a bit reluctant to switch to any other unofficial ROMs as there are so many I wouldn't know where to start. It seems they all make a lot of changes but I'd want to keep as close to the stock feel as possible, just with better battery life.
no one uses stock roms/kernels nowadays. u should flash a custom rom or kernel since they provided optimizations to batt life.

It is argued that task killers and memory killers will only make the problem worse. Juice Defender might be useful if you are using it for scheduling sync and turning WI-FI off when the screen is off, but this feature is only present in the Ultimate edition and you can turn off sync and WI-FI manually if you want. Also beware of rogue apps which are syncing all the time. It is normally the main reason of poor battery life.
Other reason, is that whereas powerful tech specs for phones were rapidly developed, battery technology didn't followed the pace. Our simply batteries cannot cope with our beasts.
Also, there is a thing that it's called "new phone battery blues" which is described as poor battery life due to excessive use of a new powerful toy. After you use your phone normally, for the purposes that normally people use a phone, your battery life will became better.
That said, personally I have a spare battery and a spare charger, and when the battery being used is low, I replace it with the charged one. Sometimes it is necessary, sometimes not.

They also have a tendency to look very tacky I think though. I think Samsung's skin and widgets are pretty nice and don't care too much for the mods I see in the screens of most ROMs. I'm really looking for something very similar to stock, except with better battery life if there are any suggestions? That's why I was thinking of just jumping to the leaked 2.3.4 if it had any noticeable impact on battery life...
Try using better battery stats, link in my sig, to see if you have any wakelocks, the thread has a good howto on using it.
The biggest thing that uses the battery on this phone is the screen, you will get between 4 and 6 hours of screen on time depending on usage and screen brightness.

Fair point - not all of the roms are everyone's cup of tea. My advice, as a starting point is to flash the stock XXKH3 variant for your area, and then flash a custom kernel, such as Ninphetamine's or Hardcore's Speedmod. This will greatly help with battery life, and also give you the ability (via root access) to use Titanium Backup to freeze apps and services you're not using, which is often the major cause of battery drain through 'wakelocks'; apps that prevent your phone from entering Deep Sleep, or continuously wake it up.
Update to the latest version in your area, uninstall those task killers and whatnot or do a factory reset, install the apps that you are going to use normally like facebook twitter and install better battery stats, decrease brightness to your most tolerable level.
use the phone normally and when the battery is low, use the tool provided in android to check if your phone is sleeping when the screen is OFF, if you are having wakelocks, then use better battery stats to find which apps are causing the wake locks.
No need to install battery management apps, or task killers or memory optimization apps (or as custom rom as yet), that would only compound you problem which may be a very small one to begin with
Thanks for the help so far guys. I've installed XXKH3 and flashed hardcore's Speedmod kernel, and am just getting things set back up the way I like them again. I'm going to uninstall the battery saving apps for now and see how the battery lasts the next couple days.
I'll install Better Battery Stats and keep an eye on any wakelocks too.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction - it was all very simple and quick to get set up; the sheer number of kernels, ROMs, etc. is all a little overwhelming to me right now, being new to Android!

there are other tweaks with custom roms that aren't found in the stock rom (which provides better functionality).
btw, i also suggest u use setcpu to underclock your device to save more batt.

wow, good for you
I used HTC Desire before this device, and the roms on there actually hindered battery life, even with all the fancy underclocking, so I am betting, without even attempting to brick my phone, that they are just as overhyped on this phone too.
I get two to three days out of my phone, using it as a PHONE. I can send and receive emails and texts all day, along with phone calls and the occasional browsing and still get at least two days before it dies. I turn off data when I dont want it and stick it in 2G mode and it dares me to kill the battery.
Just let usage settle down and it's fine

That is wrong. I used to have a UGKG2 ROM and since I upgraded to XXKH3, the battery is MUCH better while the GPS pinpoints in less than 3 seconds with a 5meters accuracy.
which rom is better in terms of speed, performance, stability and battery life between the two !!
those who have experienced both the roms pls reply ??
thanks !! !
I don't do benchmarks. That said, both roms are stable and good on battery life (which varies wildly, of course, depending on how you use your phone!). I charge my phone every 1.5 days on average, with light/moderate usage. If I'm using it to mirror Netflix and watch movies, I'll plug it in.
Between the two, I went with Nottachtrix simply because it's based on the latest 4.5.141 update; Darkside is based on 4.5.91 I do believe.
nott the latest versions are pure garbage, there is a new version every day correcting their own mistakes by not doing enough testing before launching a new version, ahy to be every day installing all equipment from 0
I like nottachatrix over darkside. It's a better and more up to date ROM and it has updates.

Im using nottachtrix 1.2.9b and my ATRIX goes to sleep and does not wake up at random times, I have to do a battery pull to bring it back. I originally installed 1.2.3 and it did the same. I wiped before installing, so I don't understand what the problem is... but I might be installing a different ROM due to this problem. Can someone point me in the right direction with recommending something good (with toggles in status bar)
I haven't tried neither of them but I'm thinking of going with NOTTACHTRIX since it's basically the original rom/kernel that's been tweaked. I find the original kernel a lot better because it doesn't overheat as much as other kernels.
I'm trying to get opinions on rooms in terms of battery life and performance for my evo 3d. I've been reading mostly about MeanROM, Venom, and of course cyanogenmod. The biggest problem that I have is that all of the reviews I've read are pre-ICS so I'm not one hundred prevent certain that the information I'm reading is up to date and I'm not misinformed or doing myself a disservice.
I do appreciate any help that people can provide and thank you in advance.

I've found that using KingCobra3D-ICS 1.6 | 3.28.631.1 | 4.0.3 | SENSE 3.6/AOSP | AROMA has been the best.
I currently have it set to AOSP and even have Google Now and the JB Keyboard (including dictionary) installed on the device and I get about 10 hours out of 1 charge.
In my experience, battery life is more dependent on what apps you run and how you use the phone (Internet browsing, email sync, etc.) than the ROM itself. Turning GPS on/off can also affect battery life, and nothing draws power more than trying to get a radio connection with a weak or non-existent signal (as in basements of buildings). Being aware of what draws battery power and avoiding those apps, settings and situations will affect battery life more than the choice of which custom ROM you use.
If you really want to compare battery life between different ROM's, I would suggest flashing then as vanilla as possible and and install/use only the apps you really need to be functional such as phone dialer, text messaging, email and Internet, at least for a day or two.
Battery life isn't my number one priiority when choosing a ROM since I have an extended battery, but it's still a consideration.

Ramjet, what is your priority when choosing a ROM? I mean I already do all of the recommended stuff for battery life, however I am constantly on my phone for either work or school now (returning for my masters). The biggest problem I have is that I can tell I'm going to have is that I will be pretty much active from 6am to about 10pm every day. During work hours it is difficult for me to be near a charger and during some of the classes charging my phone is not an option.
My biggest problem has been with ICS since the update. Due to the fact that my phone was encrypted, the ICS update from Sprint killed my 4g. At that point I kind of gave up with the basic build rom and figured I would try another ROM out there.

Captain, thank you for your suggestion; I will read up on it later today/tonight to see if it is what I am looking for. One more question for you if you don't mind. How is the JB Keyboard? I have yet to play with it and am curious to how it works/feels. Is it as good or better than Swype? I'm a huge fan of that keyboard so if have compared both I would be interested in hearing your opinion.
Thank you again
I'd steer clear of any ROM claiming to enable the second core all the time. They talk about battery life when the screen is off, but when it's on it blows.
CM9 is pretty good, but for HTC Cool ICS probably runs things the best.

My priorities are:
1. Things that I need work and work correctly (camera, 4G, texting, email, browser)
2. Stabilty (no crashes when I am using the phone)
3. Performance (I like a responsive phone)
4. Battery life (not a big one for me with an extended battery)
5. Features not included in stock ROM
6. Customization options (themes, icon packs, etc.)
I've had pretty good luck with MeanROM GB and MeanROM ICS, but still need to be careful about what apps and mods get added. If the built-in battery stats don't give you enough information, you can get BetterBatteryStats for free here on XDA, and the paid version of SystemPanel keeps pretty good history about battery usage by app. You might also want to consider an extended or spare battery.

Good points, I actually think that you pretty much laid out what my priorities are that I am looking for. I ordered an extended battery the other day, but I honestly use my phone from everything from an extended USB to GPS to calculator to everything else. I think the only thing I don't try to do is start fires and cook dinner with it. I've written down your suggestions and will look at it when I get home later.
Thank you again for taking time out the help me with this.
For my two cents I would suggest common butter its ics no issues really stable and a very laid back community. Also the dev is only 15 but his work is really good and stable I've had no issues so far really good battery life I also use my phone for everything. Plus the mods u want to add are pre included
commonsense butter hboot1.58 soff
My favorite Sense roms have been Viper Rom IC3D (The OC Daemon is pretty sweet) and Common Sense. If you want an AOSP build, I'd suggest Unicorn Porn AOKP. I've ran that rom for several months and had no issues with it.

To be fair instead of providing that useless response you could actually attempt to help him by telling him what he could do.
To the Op I would advise you to look up all of the different kernels and decide which one you would like to use, I would also advise that you look up over clocking and see what you could do with that if you want more performance at the expense of battery. Also I would advise you search for the cross breeder entropy mod which can greatly reduce your leg and increase performance of app and Internet loading times.
That's about all I can help you with for now I would advise you search the forums and look at all the different rom and kernel combos to decide which is best for you.
Finally I would also advise you download the app greenify and intelligently use that on any apps that are sucking your ram this will greatly improve your battery and performance.

I have already directed you to the only alternate kernel that is going to work with Padawan. I am definitely no developer, but it would take a lot of effort just to extract those little options, not to mention the permission of the developer, and it would then most likely have to be installed into another kernel that could be compatible with Padawan.
I am not sure what it is that you are so intent on having those options for, I am sure you have your reasons. not sure that anything else is going to give you better battery life on a 4.1.2 rom. it seems with the progression from 4.0 through 4.4, the battery life is going to diminish a bit with every evolvement.
can I suggest maybe you try Black Jelly. the different rom may provide you that option. if not, Blownfuse has an alternate kernel list in that OP which was designed specifically for that rom.
good luck

Various roms are going to provide various results. And no 2 devices are going to react the same. I know, folks have said this before, so sorry to repeat.
For what is may be worth, here is my rundown
4.O ICS ... most stable but may be lacking in some features
4.1.2 JB ... touchwiz based, the most stable JB your going to get
4.2.1 JB ... more features evolving into, but most unstable. Some able to control with alternate kernel. Battery life dwindling.
4.3 JB ... increased smoothness and improved stability. Still able to control with an alternate kernel to a certain extent. To me it started to become like medication. The phone seemed to build up a tolerance and stability would decrease. Decreased battery life.
4.4 KK .... did not have a problem with stability, but battery life has really suffered as is the complaint of many.
No rom is going to be 100% perfect. It is more of what can you tolerate for an inadequacy.
I love my music, I FB quite often, I'm on XDA several time a day and I have been catching a few minutes of Youtube.
My phone ran ORGASMIC on Padawan and I did enjoy Hellybean also. To me, battery is like gasoline, nobody is getting any better than me. Everybody pays the same at the pump. You can always get a Ravpower battery 2700 from Amazon for $8 and many swear it increase battery life immensely.

I would just take a few for a test drive then. if you had a problem with Padawan and random reboots, then my guess is you either had a bad download or your not flashing clean. a dirty flash is going to leave some straggling files from previous rom which are most likely going to conflict.
but try some different roms and let them settle. give them a couple days. if its not going to work for you, try the next.
one rom just wouldn't run on my phone and that was Carbon Rom. I tried several different versions, with and without alternate kernels. always clean. many swear by it and love it, that's why I kept trying it, but it just did not like my phone. no biggie, plenty to choose from.
don't take this the wrong way, but if you the only one suffering from a side effect, than it is most likely user error. there are many glitches throughout all roms and they are usually well documented in that thread.
refer back to my last post in Padawan. again, my flashing process may be overkill, but you cant get much cleaner than that
if a battery gets me through the day, I am good

I would just take a few for a test drive then. if you had a problem with Padawan and random reboots, then my guess is you either had a bad download or your not flashing clean. a dirty flash is going to leave some straggling files from previous rom which are most likely going to conflict.

Hey man. Just giving you an update. It turns out I had a bad battery. The middle of the battery was enlarging, I have no idea why. I got a new one and everything's working much better now. Have you heard of anything like that before?

Very common at about the 10 to 12 month mark. Battery starts to swell. You can get stronger battery for $8 on amazon.
Glad everything is working better, still want to stay clean though.
