I am on my 4th replacement Eris (trackball issues, and charging port issues). It's mint, and I take good care of it, so it's not that I am abusing it by any means, but my charging/usb port is on its way out. I've had to exchange 2 others because of the well known trackball issues.
So, Verizon has offered me early upgrade pricing on any phone of my choice! Question is, which one is closest to my Eris (size) and feel. When the Eris came out, I admit, I liked the way it looked, and felt compare to the Droid 1.
Of course, I rooted it, since there is no way I could stand being stuck on 2.1, with Sense. I really want the Nexus S, but I'm on Verizon, and not able to move (company phone). I would prefer the most "google" experience, but if it's an HTC phone with Sense, I can live. I'll probably just root it anyway. So, here are my requirements:
* FAST!! (After having an Eris for so long, I yearn for speed!!)
* Most Vanilla Google like
* "smaller" form factor like the Eris
* Good dev community for rooting (like the Eris)
Actually, now that I think of it, my requirement for being Vanilla, is not really a requirement, since I can always root it
Here are some of the phones I have thought about:
* DINC (but, should I go for something even faster, or wait?)
* Samsung Facinate
* Droid 2 Global (don't really like the form factor, but 1.2Ghz is nice!!)
I don't really think there is much choice. Although I am a diehard Mac OS X guy (Mostly because it's Unix), the iPhone just doesn't do it for me anymore. I like Android widgets, and the notifications too much, and the iPhone sucks at those (or doesn't have it)
Any chance of the Nexus S coming to Verizon? I like that the Nexus phones are always on the bleeding edge of Android releases, which is what I really want the most
So, what does everyone recommend? Wait? Get a new phone now? Replace the Eris for the 5th time?
Can you wait out for the vzw Thunderbolt?
Personally I would get another Eris and wait for the new phones to come out. BTW next time, post questions like this in the Q&A or General sections.

J/K...I'd wait for the new LTE phones to come out before getting one. They just leaked that the LTE pricing will be the same 29.99 for unlimited.
dinc is too old now. almost at the end of its life and so is the droid x. Samsung has horrible support as you can see by kaos having to go over to their forums to help them get froyo and its near the end of its life. Most of the fast phones that verizon has have a EOL in march. The d2g is the same processor as the x and d2 but overclocked. i had a x for 29 days and hated it. and that thing ran all day at 1.35. If you can handle the 4.3" screen wait for the thunderbolt. My experience with the x and looking at the rest of verizons going ons has made me realize i am leaving them. I have determined that its time to move to a mobile carrier that has similar views that i do in how handsets should be ran. That is why i am switching to tmobile and getting the G2. Tmobile is owned by a german company and for some reason the Europeans seem to be more accepting of all things unix. They have a good relationship with google and they have released 4 vanilla pure android phones. no one else has released any that i can think of.
I would get the DINC but only if you can without having to use your upgrade.
Currently on my 7th one, nd verizon has yet to offer me this. Just get the iphone, much more reliable

track ball going out, screen unresponsive, phone restarting randomly... i'm about to be on my third.
The build quality was very uneven on the Eris. Most of the ones people are getting now have already failed in the past and will fail again. If you're on your first one like I am (over 12 months now) count yourself lucky and just ride it out. Unless things change I'll be changing carriers after this contract is up as it is anyway.
Do the verizon trade in credit thing. Eris is worth 132 to verizon. Then buy some used phone online (I recently got a mint droid for 130, I'm pleasantly surprised by how much faster it is over the eris and has a great dev community and super easy to root and is still supported by verizon. For now) and wait till the thunderbolt, bionic, x 2, droid 3, or the Inc 2 comes out and get that and use your promo pricing

Dangg. Whew I'm glad I did it last week haha.
Replace it with another Eris; then wait for the Thunderbolt (SVDO) or the Droid Bonic - or jump ship like me and just get an iPhone. *shrug* /2c
I only read your first post and haven't read anyone else's answers. IMHO, Either go for the Incredible or wait for the next HTC Android phone on Verizon, the Incredible's successor, whatever it will be. Shouldn't be too much longer, but I understand it's hard to be patient.

That seems a bit short. I'm still happy with my purchase and hope this doesn't stop HTC from supporting it later on (I know it won't be soon) and that the devs may lose interest... Oh well. Maybe i'll scrap some cash together and just grab a desire when it comes out... who knows.
**Sorry for the poor title. I didn't catch it til it was too late.**
it's really all verizon's fault, they NEVER promoted the eris, and if you went in there wanting to buy one they would push the droid on you like no tomorrow.
hopefully this doesnt stop them from releasing the 2.1 OTA update to the general public, it will really help development along for us. Someday, when my eris dies I will upgrade (damn that incredible looks so good...) but until that day, I dont regret a single thing about it. except for installing leak, good thing a got a replacement though
It always seemed to me like the Eris has been advertised as Verizon's cheaper (even free for a lot of us) alternative to the Droid, and it did it's job well.
With the Incredible and Nexus One and all of the other phones (probably) coming out soon I'd expect the Droid to take the Eris' place in the lineup, like a "Buy a new HTC Incredible and get a Motorola Droid FREE" kind of deal.
ah.... oh well...
Looks like I will be upgrading soon... and paying the full price too lol, since I JUST started my contract on November 2009... oh well technology comes and goes.. and I'll have a new testing device!

Why would you upgrade that quick? The eris still has quite a few miles left in her. Early adopters can be very annoying sometimes. I have a friend (kind of) that buys a new macbook everytime there is a refresh. Drives me bat**** crazy to pay several hundred dollars more for something that does only a little more than the old one...

We all know technology changes daily be it hardware or software or whatever...
Cell phones, pda's ect are particularly susceptible as they are market driven and manufacturers are always trying to come out with the "Next Big Thing".
Hell the moto droid is now available on several websites for 20 bucks on a new 2 year...Letstalk.com etc...
Being a former 8 year blackberry user I can say this for Android at least theyre not just putting a new facade over a dated os\ui . So long as my eris doesnt melt down at the end of life date I'm good. Also so long as you're a VZW customer you'll get support for your device even if it is minimal.
I always felt the Eris was kind of an afterthought, the way they marketed it.

It's just a thought for now... I haven't totally decided but I will wait and see what the HTC incredible or whatever VZW comes out with, has to offer... if its something like an amazingly fast phone I'll probably get it.. if not I will stay with the Eris.. I don't hate the Eris, I think it is one amazing phone
plus I'd still be on here [XDA] using the Eris for testing stuff, helping out as much as I can..
looking at the incredible's spec sheet though, it's really worth the upgrade, i mean... it literally DOUBLES most of the specs, the re resolution of the screen is 480x800... the eris' screen is 480 in LENGTH, that's pretty impressive. Will i get the incredible? if i had the money, which i dont, so i will stay with my eris for as long as I deem fit, because honestly, it's a damn good phone for what it's worth.
and what about in six more months after that and they double the specs on the incredible

exactly... I will see when i comes out what people are saying first.. and the eris is an amazing phone for the price. I really dont think you can beat the value.
After rocking an HTC Touch for 1.5 years, I bought a brand new Eris from someone and avoided a contract reset just a week ago. I think it's a great phone, and I have no regrets. I can upgrade anytime but I'm still on a very good Alltel contract so I want to hold out as long as I can before switching to a VZW plan. It does everything I need it to do.
Has anyone heard anything more about this? I'd like to know if it's actually going to happen or not. Although I'm sure if it is we'll find out soon.. I'd also like to know if they'd offer us an upgrade for free or at least half price. If they stop doing the phone completely I think they should at least offer us something. I'd love to upgrade to the Incredible if it was free or half price..
why would they give us a new phone simply because they've stopped selling it?
If you have to do a warranty replacement or anything like that, I'm sure there is a large multitude of backup units, and once those run out/they stop carrying those, verizon will simply replace it with a phone of equal value and hardware features like they always have done for discontinued phones.

I just read an article about the nexus one being scrapped. Thought you just another person complaining because they were impatient. I'll eat my words and apologize now.
yeah, the nexus one is pretty dead.
plagued by 3g problems, and low sales, the only thing to really look forward to in picking one up over another phone like the incredible is that it it's wireless N chipset miiiiiiiiiiight (big might) get support soon.
honestly, for the price you'd be better off getting an incredible and waiting for root to get vanilla-android.
and man, why do people hate sense ui so much? the only ONLY problem it has is how laggy it can get. and on the eris? honestly, I expected it when I bought it looking at the specs. but upgrading to 2.1 got rid of ALL the lag for me. I love the look and extra screens of sense.
and jebus... the incredible is rocking DOUBLE the cpu and ram hardware, using nearly the same rosie build as the eris. it will be faster then us on 2.1 out of the freaking box, and with root... you'll be blazing through apps like crazy.
Where should I go from here? I'm not finding anything that I'm enjoying about the Eris anymore. It's naturally slow and outdated, and my favorite ROM has been discontinued.
I've researched a few phones on the market (Incredible, Droid 2, etc) but I know there are others out there. Are there any that are just completely phenomenal?
My contract isn't up for quite a while, so I won't be getting an upgrade anytime soon unless someone knows of a contract loophole. Any advice for a (relatively cheap/free) upgrade?
Also, any good way to breathe some new life into my Eris? I've tried every major ROM, not totally enjoying any other than Evil Eris (again, discontinued..). Throw out any ideas short of bricking it

My girlfriend had an eris, I too flashed every rom I could to speed it up, no luck, so i called customer service and bugged the hell outta them telling then how horrible it was until they agreed to give me an early upgrade. Just bought her an incredible last week for 300 minus 100 mail in rebate. I went onto vzw/trade_in website and they appraised her eris for 132. So it really is only costing me 70 outta pocket for her upgrade. And ps, she says the incredible is everything she always wished her eris could be lol
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
I have a question about this too, I bought my eris around the time it just came out, (not quite sure anywhere from Nov-Jan) Is their a way where I can get an early upgrade for 20$ or something? I heard their was an early upgrade you could get.
I'd suggest one of the froyo roms. Evil Eris was my first and favorite ROM for a long time and I wasn't satisfied with any other until Tazz Froyo.
The fact is... our phone is pretty weak. Software tweaks at this point will not really help us all that much unless they're absolutely major. Basically, until Android 3.0 comes out we really won't be seeing much change.
That being said, I don't suggest you upgrade. Smart phones are still in their early stages, especially android phones. In a year they'll have been taken to a whole new level. It'll be like comparing a modern PC to one 5 years ago (like an i7 to a P4) the way that things are going.
I suggest you wait it out because the longer you wait the more incredible your phone will be when you get it.
Wow, I appreciate all of the feedback.
I didn't even consider Hungry Man's idea of toughing it out for a better phone in the long run, that's a good one. High on the priority list.
@jiggaman508 -- I was wondering if complaining would actually do any good. haha.
@Stonent, Hungry man -- I grabbed KaosFroyo and have to say that it is WAY better than any other ROM I've tried. Gonna try Tazz out later tonight probably.
Thanks for the feedback! Keep the ideas rolling
As a former Eris owner, I just wanted to stop by and say hi. This was my first Android and I loved it.
I'd also like to advise you guys when you do update your phones, HTC has the best rom communities in most cases. HTC phones typically get the most rom development. If you love the Eris community (which is one of the best in my opinion) , you may want to consider sticking with HTC. With some Androids, they have a very limited selection of roms. coming from an Eris, that may leave you disappointed.

I went to the rezound, they have like 5 droid incredible devs and counting lol its great!
I think the LG Revolution only has 5 roms total if that and it's been out since last May. That's why I came back to let people know so they dont get something like that and regret it.

I am thinking about replacing my Eris after I cracked the screen when it fell out of my pocket during a traffic stop (no one got a ticket). I hate contracts and don't want to to pay big money (over 150) on a phone. So that leaves me in the used phone arena.
I would want a phone with lots of support from this type of group and one with 4g speed. So my question is what would yall recommend? Or do I just bite the bullet and be locked in with Verizon for another two years?

Go to Craigslist and look for an Android. I.see the thunderbolt always sselling for around $200 used on there (little more than the 150 you want, but no 2 year contract). That will also give you a phone with a good rom development community. Trust me, it has one of the best rom.development communities of the 4g phones on Verizon.

Don't get.the LG.revolution. it only has one real rom. While it has an unlocked bootloader, there are phones out there.with locked bootloaders that have more roms developed for them.

Thanks for the info!
Just sold my two Erises on CL, coudln't have made it this long without gingershedbread from workshed. I went with Evo, another family member went with Optimus. I must say I have a hard time recommending any LG phone. The optimus is speedy but almost no support for it at all though there is a CM7 version that has been ported, thank goodness for that. But I agree with what has been said about htc phones and forums, lots of support. Good luck!
I decided to go with the HTC Thunderbolt. Now to figure out which Rom to flash it with. The even bigger question is do I give my Eris to my daughter or do I keep it to play with?
It was really tough replacing my Eris! : )
Again thanks to all who have contributated to the development of the roms. It is greatly appreciated.
The thunderbolt has plenty of roms to play with. Let your daughter experience the wonders of android.
I hope I helped you choose a phone that you will love and not one you will kick yourself in the ass everyday over (like I did with the LG revolution). While I like Motorola because of the battery life and the quality of production, HTC is where it's at for roms. My love for Android began with the Eris and I hope I can help anyone who still has it, pick an upgrade that they will also love.

Sent from my ERIS using xda premium
It has good roms but small selection. I don't recommend it if you want to play with several different roms. If you want to stick to 1 or 2, its a good phone.
Many of the developers have moved on to the nexus. I suspect that development will pick up some when Motorola releases ICS. We have an alpha version coming along.
While it's a very good phone, it didn't live up to it's hype. It was released with some problems that it shouldn't have had after being delayed for as long as it was.

The touchscreen was going bad in my Eris back in April. I guess it was losing it's sensitivity. I dealt with it for a few weeks but I was stuck in my contract until Nov. So I found a new digitizer online for $37 and a phone tear down and digitizer install video on youtube. For the tech savvy people like myself (I'm an engineer) it was the easiest and best way to get more life out of my Eris when I wasn't eligible for a phone upgrade and didn't want to pay full price for a new one.
Just another option for you.

I got the ReZound, also and I love it but not as much as my Eris which recently kicked the bucket I must return to fixing that Eris now!
Ta-ta for now my friends!
Got my Eris launch weekend in Nov 09. and had it rooted and running smooth which kept me from using my upgrade until I cracked my screen last month...so it was either a 99 asuriun deductible or a Rezound on sale for 99 online.. guess which choice I made?
Hey guys, as always i first would like to offer my praise and sincere admiration to everyone who has and continues to work on the Dx2. You are ALL amazing and the work you do has had me enjoying this phone ever since i have gotten it..
That being said, my dx2 is a company phone.. they pay for it and all its accessories and monthly cost etc.. So my big boss wanted to upgrade from his blackberry so he got a Razr Maxx. He can't get use to it and (to LOL) its incompatible with the bluetooth in his Mercedes (don't u WISH u had that problem)..
So anyway, he is offering me to take the Maxx (for Free).. Now i have to say, I have CM7 on my X2, and honestly i LOVE it.. Its Fast, It works, it never crashes.. I ask it to do something, and it does it.
Now yes, the Maxx is 4G, with supposedly insane battery life. I have read i think there is ics for it now too.. I dunno..
Question is.. Do i take the upgrade and lose MY upgrade (January 2013), to which a quad core or the s3 will be out then, or do i take the Maxx now?
Ill admit I'm leaning on keeping my x2.. I really have no issues with it (and I'm on Long Island with is excellent 4G)..
Well. I'd go razr cuz they just did a bootloader workaround. Forget quad core. They can hardly utilize the second core on our x2 and you want 2 more? But you could wait and boycott Motorola ...
Sent from my MB870 using Xparent Cyan Tapatalk 2
I'd probably jump on the razr, its a known winner.
Its the success story that we had hoped the X2 and/or Bionic would have been
if you wait and bet on a new model before its proven you have the potential to pick a phone with less dev support.
Razr Maxx. That phone is looking better and better to me every day. Why? My dad has it and his 4g, kexec'ed phone whoops the **** out of my X2
Sent from my DROID X2 using Tapatalk 2
January is a long way away or I would say to wait it out. Why would your upgrade change if the phone is already purchased? Anyway, the maxx has great battery life, 4g, kexec, and an ics leak, that sounds like a nice combo to me. On the negative side its moto and by 2013 the phones will dwarf the razr. You have a tough decision on your hands. I just hope you get away from this phone eventually. Im starting to hate it more and more. (Not trying to be negative just speaking my mind)

I'm also curious as to why your upgrade would be lost if you're getting the phone from a non-Verizon source.

What a NICE boss! Btw, why did he pick u over and above so many employees? Are u the ONLY employee under him? Btw,you could wait for the S3 or some other phone. But since it is a company phone will ur company allow u to buy any phone or they decide what phone u'll get?
Yes the S3 is probably a quad core phone (rumor has it that in US it will be dual core just like the HTC One XL thingy) or you can get the next nexus, but Jan is a long way. There are ALWAYS better phones round the corner. You have to just pick your poison and stick with it... And the Maxx is one of the best. Of course, I will NOT go for it purely on principle, NO MOTOROLA for me anymore! But you should decide if the Maxx will do ALL you want from a phone for the next 2 years or so. I believe it will...
Well, I'm one that went from the DX2 to the Razr Maxx. I'm also one that said no more Moto phones for me again. I guess I lied. When I first upgraded, I tried the other side and found out that the old saying "the grass is greener on the other side" doesn't hold true with these phones. The phone I bought (HTC Rezound) missed probably 4 out of 5 calls I received. It just didn't ring. Needless to say I can't have that. It is after all, first and foremost a phone. If it doesn't ring when you get a call, all the unlocked bootloaders in the world aren't worth having. Moto hardware is tough to beat.
So, with that said, yeah, I like the phone. There's lots of roms available for it. Yes, ICS roms are there too. They do have their quirks though. Much like CM7 for the DX2. I'm running Eclipse on it right now but from what I remember, the problems with it that were most noticeable were things like the camcorder not working (no Moto drivers available) and a Bluetooth issue. Bluetooth works fine but if you turn off the Bluetooth device you're using off and forget to turn Bluetooth off on the phone, and then make a call or somebody calls you, you won't hear them and they can't hear you. Seems to me that mine wouldn't even ring but it's been a while so I don't remember for sure. The easy fix is to turn off Bluetooth when you aren't using it. Also, and this was kind of the one issue that made me leave it, data can be iffy at times. I tried several of them (Gummy and Black Widow being the best for me) and had problems with data being dropped. Only time I had troubles with it was when I was in a weak area but a lot of my work is in areas like that and it would get quite frustrating. However, it seems to be a hit and miss thing. Some people have absolutely no problems with data on those two roms, others have the problems I have. I suspect it depends on the signal but others say they don't have problems even with a weak signal so; who knows?
I have no doubt though that when the ICS upgrade comes, those issues will be fixed with the new kernal that comes with it. The phone is free. You'd be a fool not to jump on it. It shouldn't change your upgrade path since you didn't buy it so you really have nothing to lose. If you don't like it, activate your X2 again, unless of course, you have to give that up to get this one. If that's the case, well, I'd still go for the Maxx.
One more thought. For the Razr and Razr Maxx, if it's a CDMA phone, XDA isn't the best place to find roms, mods or what have you, for it. Most of the stuff here is for the GSM version of the phone. There's a website out there that's pretty much totally devoted to the Razr. They have far more stuff there for the CDMA phone than you can get here. Don't know what the policies are here for posting links to other forums so I guess I'll leave it out. If you get it and want a link, PM me.

I really have no issues with it (and I'm on Long Island with is excellent 4G)..

are you sure youd lose your upgrade? if hes giving it to you, you wont lose it.
Yeah, your upgrade is based on your contract, not your phone. If you get a phone from a third party and you have it lit on your line, you won't lose the upgrade. This is coming from a former tier 2 billing support rep. ;-) enjoy your new phones.

Hey sorry for my delay in response, been busy..
Ok the Reason i would "Lose" my upgrade is because we here are all on a corporate verizon contract. We have lets say 10-12 employees under this contract, and the owners and higher ups also have their wives and kids under the contract as well.. so that now becomes like 30 people.. They upgrade phones so often that they "Take" an upgrade for one line and use it for another etc..
So if I take the Maxx, my boss will "Take" my upgrade to use for HIS next phone, in effect taking away my upgrade.. Now that being said, i (not trying to toot my horn) am a very valueable employee here (I'm the CIO/Network Admin, in an IT Department of 1, aka ME) so I get treated Very well, for example my boss who is the owner of the company and the only person i report too 3 weeks ago just Gave me his 64G 3G Ipad2 because he got an Ipad3, and i didnt even ask nor want one.. I wont even mention the Corporate Gas card. x 10000
But now you know my conumdrum. He has the Razer Maxx now, and he LOATHES it. He is a very simplistic user, and he is staying on his blackberry (if you can believe that), so he said he is waiting for some friend to give him a new blackberry and he is supposedly gonna pass the Maxx off to me.. So i will have the Maxx, and the X2 at my disposal.
To the nice dude who said about the roms and such on other sites, i thank you, you can pm me any info you have, i would have googled and found them anyway, but if you know where the goods are it can save me some time.
I think part of my trepedation on the Maxx is honestly CM7 on the X2 is faster i will say that. The UI and snappiness of the phone over the Motoblurred Crapola on the Maxx just is a breeze and to me Much faster... Now obviouslyi would blitz the hell out of the maxx and insall some ICS variant on it, and i know the Maxx is getting the ICS upgrade, but is the ICS roms for it TRUE ICS? Or Emulated ICS?
I swore my next phone would have complete UI Hardware Acceleration, as smooth as the iphone, and i know ICS brings that, but only in its True form.
Thanks for all the replies tho, you guys/gals are the best.

Good to know why your upgrade will be gone! It makes sense and clarifies a mystery. The Razr Maxx will get ICS and it will be proper ICS (hopefully with the 3.0 kernel and even if not, the kernel it will use WILL have all drivers for hardware). Of course, this version of ICS will have Motorola's trademark crapware on top, but still it is ICS. I dunno what you mean by "emulated ICS".. Did you mean something like Samsung Galaxy S's "ICS-like value pack" (which is Gingerbread with some of ICS's features, kinda like CM 7.2)? If so, then rest assured that Razr Maxx WILL get ICS. Period. And it is rootable + it has great ROMs and a lot of devs. I must say I do admire the build quality of Motorola. The phones are sturdy and rock solid. My X2 was a rock. It could handle falls and the body felt premium and it doesn't make squeaks when you press it. My Dinc2's plastic back panel makes some squeaks and noises when I hold the phone, and it feels cheaper in quality.
So, the Razr Maxx is a pretty good phone. It has its caveats, it is locked down and Moto may stop supporting it once their next flagship phone arrives, ditching it like it did with the X2... Keep this in mind, when weighing the phone's pros and cons. I say wait till tomorrow when Samsung is gonna unveil the Galaxy S3. If it comes on Verizon and it is a beast (which it should) then hold out for that. Else go for this!!
Cheers! \m/
hehe, personally now I'd take a WM7 phone by any maker (as long as it is reasonable) over anything Motorola produces.
But honestly, to me, it's Verizon, I have absolutely no expectations of any of the other impressive phones. their top 3, (maxx ~ evil moto, nexus, iphone ~ evil apple)
No one X for us, no samsung note, no good sony phones, no galaxy SII, no Titan II with a super impressive camera, etc.
Anyways, might as well just take the Maxx for now, they get development love, and you don't have to worry about battery life, also your next upgrade after it would be promised quad core and most likely software that could utilize it better than dual core currently is XD

Its an actual official ics leak, kernel and all. Aparrently motorola got ics right according to some, but it hardly makes up for their business practices.

Just looked for this device on Verizons website and it said "Available Online Only" meaning two things to me. One, they are selling through their stock. Two, something is coming around the corner, soon. Any speculation? I don't see a One in our future. Maybe another DNA variant?
There have been rumors of a "DNA 2," that's about all anyone knows.

With the moonshine S-OFF coming out, I see the DNA having a pretty long life in the "hardcore" smartphone user scene. It is a top of the line device, with fantastic hardware, and will be competitive for a while still, even with the ONE and speculated "DNA 2" coming out. At least, that is my guess.
EoL of the DNA at this point in time would be a bit weird.... it was release 11/2012 so idk how that would work out. There is already talks about the butterfly 2 and its said to be coming out in third qtr. As soon as that hits the market, we should see our next htc phone on verizon a month after or so.
Verizon may stop selling the device or whatever they choose. But after all the time I've referenced xda and came here I can pretty much guarantee that it is far from the eol on this and many other communities. And I highly doubt HTC will just drop it, I'm sure they saw what happened with Samsung and the s1s when they took forever to update anything.

It would be a shame if Verizon does this but I would think they would start those corney commercials showing the phone as 99.00 down with 2year agreement or something like that - today is my last day to return I think, so I have a lot to consider

Signed with the blood of my DNA
I absolutely love the device. I was with Sprint for nine years and finally broke down and switched. We, up until about 3-5 years ago didn't even have a Verizon presence in our state. They still even now only have about 10% of the market here so the LTE here is outstanding. Normally running 15-30 down and the same up. Enough of the history of Verizon in our state. I just picked this phone up several weeks ago when it had that Free coupon on the net. As I said I love the hardware and the software is meh, I would rather be running sense 5 on it, but for now, it is what it is, and with a custom launcher and a few miner tweaks it good for now. I had the very first Evo on Sprint and loved it for the short time I had it. After joining the rooting community though I purchased a Nexus S, followed by a Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 7, Nexus 10, and a GS3 that was given to me. So I am very familiar with rooting devices and running custom everything on them. With my life story here now, my main concern is if they do end of life this phone there will not be any more devices going out so Verizon, HTC, and just the dev community will move on. Its a shame. This is a great phone. I have used the One extensively and there is little difference in the phones in the way that they run and I found it strange that everyone, or many people, in the community were pushing to see the One on Verizon. This is the One in many ways, and in several ways better. I think at this point Verizon is looking to ditch this device because of all the whoopla the One is causing and its sad. I don't plan on ditching this phone anytime in the near future either. Its just sad that this phone is so understated. Is it better than the One, no but awfully close. Is it better than the S4, in my personal opinion after spending a week with it, yes. Its definitely better than a good crop of the phones out now even with its age. I think until we hear of a new device to take its place Verizon would be smart to dump a smidge more money and re-advertise for this device dropping the price point to $150-99 on contract and breathe some life back into this device. When I went to switch over to Verizon, and I knew what I was there to get, the sales person mentioned at least three other devices that were no where near the quality of this device. So not only at the corporate level but the floor level this phone needs some love. I'm thinking its to late at this point but i am still glad I picked it up. I'm still happy with it as it is, although I am excited to get it rooted at some point, as this phone has huge potential. I'm not wanting to be the "glass is half empty" guy its just not looking promising at this point for our beloved DNA :'(
The HTC Thunderbolt got a full Android upgrade (2.3 to 4.0) over a year after Verizon stopped selling it, and the Droid Incredible got a maintainance update a few months back I believe. So even when Verizon stops selling it, it won't stop getting support for a while.
Look at what the rezound has pulled off, and in my opinion it was a great device, but nowhere near as nice as the DNA. EOL is as much a frame of mind as anything else in the development community and userbase. I still help out with rezound development and have some close friends and dev partners active so we spend a lot of sleepless nights working on software for users and tools for developers so they're able to offer more. I moved up to the DNA because I wanted too, but didn't leave the rezound behind. There's a lot of guys like me who tend to do that to help drive the spirit of android, and there's also guys who unlike me are true developers making things happen. The DNA is a really nice device and if the development and custom software minded community wants a device to thrive, it will thrive.

The first sign they wanted to phase out the DNA was the Free-with-2year promotion.
With the HTC One still completely unannounced on verizon (and all reps denying it vehemently), I'd have to guess that either HTC doesn't like how vzw handled their marketing or verizon made a yet-unannounced sweetheart deal with someone else. My money'd be on Samsung since verizon is really pimping their products.

Wow. I wonder if that means LATER this summer like August or sooner....?
I see a lot of DNA's coming up for sale soon.. Mine included !! Depends on the retail cost though..
Definitely got to voice my opinion on this. Had the rezound for a year and a half. For how much I used it, I needed an extended battery but overall. Great device and first really high resolution phone. I just got my DNA and love it. The rezound was lagging since the last update.
I think Verizon dropped the ball on the one. They are putting it out almost 5-6 months after its initial release. That's atrocious. As phone connoisseurs we all know something new will be out soon after that anyway.
I'm sticking with my DNA. I don't see the development dying down after moonshine is released. The one has some small upgrades (most are portable thanks to the people here). And screen size downgrade.
I'll wait for the next nice HTC device to upgrade.

Releasing so late after the other carriers is kind of a stupid move, but honestly if you have vzw and want the one, you're stuck waiting anyways. Or get the gs7 or whatever that Sammy brings out a month after that.

I only say its stupid, which is probably not the right word, but its because they're placing a phone out months after its alternate carrier releases, meaning it'll be an older device releasing against newer devices, seems to counter what is normally done, release newer devices against newer devices. I thought I made that point clear, but maybe not, the joke with the gs7 or whatever must not have been clear enough.
