Did you flash ClockworkMod Recovery first??
Either download an update.zip with cwm recovery in the development section or use ROM manager to install cwm.
Then use install from zip in cwm and choose your ROM file from your sd card.
Did install the recovery but the update just wont install when I try to install it from the Tom manager.
Sounds like you're trying to flash the wrong thing. You shouldn't be flashing an update.zip, that sounds like the root file. Make sure you are flashing the correct .zip
Sent from my Vibrant running GingerCloneR2
the update.zip file is the root file. Whatever rom your flashing will have that name in on the zip file. Follow these steps:go to clockwork recovery mode, install zip from sd, choose zip from sd, then look for rom name on the zip file(example Bionix v5.zip), click on file, click yes, when it's done installing reboot.

which update.zip are you talking about?
The one that roots you?
or a rom/addon renamed to update.zip?
the short answer is usually no.
if you flash a rom with root (which is most of them) then you wont have to re-root with the update.zip
if you flash back to stock firmware with no root, then you'll have to re-root with the update.zip
I down loaded the rom to my phone. When I went to CWM to flash there were to files. The rom to flash and the other was update.zip. Didn't know if I should reboot to recovery and apply update.zip.

as long as your already rooted you should be fine, the update.zip is probably left over from when you rooted, I've been through quite a few roms and I still have mine on there
as long as you can get to Clockworkmod Recovery you should be good to go with just flashing the rom.
i open clockworkmod in recovery mode->install .zip from sd card->choose .zip from sd card-> click yes and then start to install but immidiatelly says "installation aborted"...what should i check????????
If you reboot does your phone still boot back in to the existing rom? If so I would would start again and re-do CF-root. not sure if you followed this guide but here is a link anyway - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1103399

i've tried villainrom and cognition....currently i'm running on lightinrom but that was flashed through odin....:/
it boots normally back to lightinrom...when i flash the cf root kernel thorough odin it would not boot rather than stay on the samsung galaxy s logo...it's drivin me nuts...don't know what to try.....
have you tried downloading a different rom and tried that?
As sicopat said, it may be worth downloading again and trying that.
What rom you trying to flash?
i've tried sensation rom, villainrom and cognition rom...all do the same...when i press ok to install the rom cwm reads data, says update installation and then immidiatelly installation aborted....someone experienced gs2 user please help....
I would try going back to stock and start from scratch dude. I'm not overly experienced as I've only had my SGS2 a week, but I followed all the guides and didnt get any issues. Seems like its a problem with CWM if its not letting you do anyy roms at all?
You are getting the orange CWM 4.0.0.2 screen right?
Also I would try posting in the Q & A section.

It sounds like you are using the Rom Manager from the Market when you should be using the CWM app.
If you don't have the CWM app and you are using a kernel that has CWM, you need to boot into Recovery using Power, Volume Up and Home buttons then install your zip from the sd card.
Just use the flash update mode.
i tried both rom manager and cwm app separetly...even when i tried rom manager it would sent me to the cwm recovry........do you think it has anything to do with my pc unziping the roms the moment the're downloded????because that happend and i compressed them back to zip files.....:/

Yes of course, you should not be unzipping the files because it corrupts them. Do yourself a favour and become more familiar with flashing instructions, it will save you a lot of panic and anxiety, like what you have just been through.
Ok so I used dos program to unlock bootloader then selected to flash recovery and root through dos then downloaded rom manager flashed Cwm and when I go to recovery it shows an exclamation point but if I flash it and reboot in rec through rom manager works do I need to flash the recoveries.img that have the many different colors to choose from and flash that then rom manger and flash Cwm im not really sure where to go I've looked and looked im trying to install cyanogen mod and the recovery debacle is holding me up

The recovery with all the colors is romracer's, which can be downloaded here. It's generally the one most people recommend using. It sounds like you need to delete your install-recovery.sh file to get rid of that exclamation point. Try the following from romracer's thread:
Thanks to mrinehart93 for pointing this out.
The system runs /system/etc/install-recovery.sh on boot with its stock rom. On boot it checks the recovery partition for some update and with CWM installed decides to reflash the stock recovery over it. Rename or delete the file and the CWM should stick.

I had the same problem before I installed romracer's CWM. It's the only one I've used since. If you decide to install his, Rom Manager should recognize it and allow you to use it instead of its stock one. Just don't flash CWM from within the app after that, or I think it will overwrite romracer's with the stock Rom Manager one.
I made a stock recovery on CWM...then later I got TWRP and I like it, but if I want my old recoveries I can't get to them. How can I create an option to boot one or the other when booting into recovery?
You will have to install CWM recovery back on the phone to install the CWM backups. Just keep the install file handy.
Can he get to CWM Recovery install from his new TWRP that comes up now when he boots into recovery??
I ask this, because I have(had) CWM and used it.. Then I went and installed TWRP.... and now it works.....
BUT my backup(nandroid) is CWM.....
and while using TWRP..I want to goto CWM and press install... and cannot find the CWM.zip (within TWRP)....
Do I have to goback to Odin and reinstall the CWM??? Where would it go??
Put the CWM install zip the same place you would place any *.zip files to install. TWRP should have no issue installing CWM.
thanks Ray... I did do this.. but TWRP doesn't recognize it.. Could it be because there is only the .tar inside the zip?? it's the zip I used for Odin... maybe I should use a different CWM zip.. I know there's quite a few.. thanks....
Yes... Odin files are not usable in recovery.
You need a zip made to use in recovery.
You will find a zip recovery here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1526431

thanks! now im back to cwm touch
Hello,
is there any easy way to backup my original factory firmware so after I flash a new ROM and I won't like it I can revert back to what factory gave me?
Best you can do is root your phone, and do a nandroid backup in CWRecovery before doing anything else to the phone (flashing a custom rom/kernel/etc). This will give you a 'snapshot' of your stock setup only with root, and all you'd need to do to unroot is flash a stock kernel.
Or you can simply flash a stock rom with Odin over whatever you have at the time.
There's no way to do what you're asking with a stock/unrooted phone.
As mentioned above u can't do it with out rooting. First root your phone without flashing any custom rom or kernel by pasting the zip file in ext sd and apply update using stock recovery. Then download recovery tools from play store and get your temporary cwm touch recovery. After this go to stock recovery and apply this zip. Then do a nandroid backup and reboot after it finishes. You'll have the exact stock rom, kernel and recovery. :good:

I know you guys here don't like such questions, but can I ask for links to that tools? I got S2 Root file but it has to be flashed via Odin. What recovery tools from Play Store? You mean this?: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=de.mkrtchyan.recoverytools&hl=pl
How can I get "my temporary CWM touch recovery"? What ZIP to apply then? Geez! Am I that stupid or it is just language issue? Hahaha

Dont worry dude. i'll try and explain as much as i can.
1. Go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746794 and choose the Root_SuperSU.0.96.Only-signed.zip or Root_SuperSU.0.98.Only-signed.zip from the attachments.
2. Paste it in your ext sd card and power off.
3. Reboot into recovery mode and choose apply update from sdcard and select the SuperSU file.
4. Now reboot your device and it will be successfully rooted and SuperSU will be installed.
5. Download temporary cwm recovery from their website or get it via recovery tools in play store. (link provided by you is correct except for different language i think )
6. Paste cwm.zip it in ext sd and reboot into recovery mode. apply update and you will get temporary cwm recovery.
7. Now you can take backup from it. it will backup all your data and both rom, kernel and even recovery will be stock.
Be careful while flashing roms or kernels though. :good:
