[Q] Help Official Dell Streak ROM - Streak 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, i can´t install Official Dell Streak ROM (file extension .pkg) i reboot in recovery mode (Hold VolUp+VolDown while power on) second i select install update.pkg from sdcard but not install, only enter in Recovery Mode clockworkmod (I get message on screen when load recovery E:can`t find MISC:
Actual rom StreakDroid 1.7.0 ( aka HD7 Edition )
Thanxs for help.

Put the Stock Streak Rom in root of your SD Card. Rename it to "Update.pkg"
Install first the stock Dell Recovery attached here (unzip it first) via Fastboot "fastboot -i 0x413c flash recovery dellstock_recovery.img"
then reboot "fastboot -i 0x413c reboot"
When the screen turns off, press vol up & vol down for entering recovery
then press the camera button to confirm update (second option from the top)
after few seconds the stock recovery will ask you if you want to proceed the update - > press the camera button and voila, you´ve done!
Info: Your clockwork recovery will be gone, since you have flashed the stock one. To get the clockwork recovery install it after you successfully installed the stock streak rom

I appreciate the help, perfect and fast, follow these same steps above but still black screen (I guess dellstock_recovery was not valid).
Thanks for the valuable help and quick response.

When exactly you get stuck on black screen? after you confirm the second option from the top in recovery?
What is your Build-Nr. (Stock Rom) 318? 319? The recovery.img attached here works flawless with 318, i din´t tried it with other builds... maybe you should search for the stock recovery which fits your build of stock rom...

Moving to General

I have exactly the same problem. I'm a newbie with android rom flashing. I can enter fastboot mode by pressing the camera key while powering on. I then connect it to the computer and the phone says "fastboot mode". After that, this is what I do:
Open command prompt
type adb devices (i've added the path of adb in the system variables so i can access it from everywhere)
it tries to look for devices but cant find my streak
I type the fastboot command that you talked about (i have unzipped the image file etc), but it cannot find the command.
What am I missing here?
The reason I want to go back to stock rom is because StreakDroid doesn't work on my mobile and Cyanogen's GingerStreak mod 7 works only for a few hours and then restarts my mobile every 10-15 minutes and doesn't detect the headphone connection either. All I wanted was superuser access in stock rom but installing superuser bricked my phone and now I've tried using custom roms but want my stock rom back.
@Moderators: If you move the thread to some place else, can you please post a link to that thread? It's very difficult to find the continuation of the tread without a link. Thanks anyway.

peaple.. tks for all

Going back to the Stock ROM
I've resolved my problem. I think there needs to be more clarity on how to go back to Dell Stock ROM
Dunno if it's required but I had ADB path set in my system.
To Download:
Dell Stock ROM (find the rom. I found it somewhere and now i've got so many roms on my computer, i don't know which one's the correct one. You can find Eclair floating around somewhere) Found the package, it's 1.6. You can update it to the latest version through DELL later. http://www.MegaShare.com/3295716
Dell Stock Recovery (for fast boot stuff) http://www.MegaShare.com/3295642
Process:
Rename the Dell Stock Rom to update.pkg
Copy it to the root of the sd card. You might need a micro-sd card reader if your mobile is bricked. Any other mobile with a micro-sd card reader will work too.
Turn off your bricked mobile, if it's on. If you can't, then just take out the battery.
Press and hold down the camera button and then click the power button. Don't release the camera button until you see a white screen
Select Fast boot mode on the top right on your mobile
Now connect your mobile to the computer
You will notice that it says Fast boot mode on your mobile
Now on the computer, unzip the stock recovery into a folder.
open command prompt (XP=Start\run\cmd, Win7=type cmd in the text box and hit enter)
Navigate to the path where you unzipped the recovery file (cd is the basic command you need. If you don't know dos commands, then you shouldn't be rooting in the first place)
type 'fastboot -i 0x413c flash recovery dellstock_recovery.img' without the quotes and hit enter
type 'fastboot -i 0x413c reboot' without the quotes and hit enter.
unplug the mobile from the computer, grab a beer, sit back and relax while your mobile get's unrooted.

Upgrade from o2 2.1 to StreakDroid FroYo v1.5.3
I have tried to make things simple as possible, however you will need to assess if YOU are comfortable running these commands, if not please don't bother.
Whilst I have black screened and froze my device may times and that it "looks" bricked / dead, a restore to the original baseband/rom/recovery image has always solve it for me, but I'm not saying it will for you!

What your doing.
**************************************
I will try explain the best I can what it actually is that you will be doing.
You will be updating the recovery image to a custom one (it does the firmware upgrading), updating your
baseband (a 2.2 gsm/gprs driver) and then installing the new firmware.
Once you have flashed to DJ_Steve's StreakDroid firmware updating it is very, very simple (copy the update to the SD and load it from recovery) it is literally a 5 minute job.
**************************************
Warnings
**************************************
Whilst I have had black screens and recovered very easily from them it has taken me literally HOURS to do so.
Upgrading via this method whilst quite fool proof should only be attempted if you are confident, however bare in mind that the reward is well worth it.
This is the usual "it's YOUR phone, if you break it you break it and I will not be held responsible" blurb.
**************************************
On to the upgrade
**************************************
So your on V2.1 (the o2 **** up) and you want to get to StreakDroid 1.5 because o2 are dragging their collective asses? and
you have already downloaded all the tools above of course? Good! Lets begin!
Extract "The Fastboot tool" to c:\fastboot
Rename "fastboot-windows.exe" to "fastboot.exe"
Extract "The Clockwork Recovery Image" to c:\fastboot
Extract "The new Baseband" to c:\fastboot
Extract "The 720p HD video patch" to c:\fastboot
Install "Dell PC Suite" "R290208.exe" then "Updated Dell Streak PC Sync Tool (eclair 2.1).zip"
Turn phone off
Make sure your USB cable is unplugged
Press Camera and Power until you see a white screen
Press the touch screen on the top right (Fastboot), the screen will change.
Count to 10 (honestly, just do it as it saves a whole load of headache)
Plug the cable in.
Go to device manager (Control Panel>System>Device Manager).
View "Other devices" should be a "Android 1.0" device with a yellow warning symbol
Right click -> Update Driver Software -> Browse for the driver -> Let me pick -> Show all -> Google, Inc -> Android Bootloader Interface.
Ok, Next, Next, Yes I'm sure, etc. Until the drivers have loaded.
Now when you check (Control Panel>System>Device Manager) you should see an "Android Phone" section with the "Android Bootloader Interface"
*********************Point of hard return********************
*****Past this point you will actually flash the updates*****
*************************************************************
Open a command prompt (Start -> Run -> cmd)
goto c:\fastboot
***flash custom recovery***
in command prompt:
fastboot -i 0x413c flash recovery recovery.alt.img
wait until your device displays "Download RECOVERY Done!"
fastboot -i 0x413c reboot
hold camera + power.
unplug the USB cable
enter fastboot again (top right)
count to 10, connect the cable
***flash new baseband***
in command prompt:
fastboot -i 0x413c flash amss amss.mbn
wait until your device displays "Download AMSS Done!"
fastboot -i 0x413c reboot
unplug the USB cable
Let the device load into the android os (one loaded you should notice the phone won't connect to o2, this is normal)
After booting connect the phone up as a usb device
Copy "The StreakDroid FroYo v1.5.3 firmware" to you sd card
Rename "update-1.5.3.zip" to "Update.zip" (it's case SeNsItIvE)
Power down the device
***Loading the Update***
If you choose you can leave the USB cable connected for power (although I would recommend you have 40-60% battery life and leave the cable unplugged).
Boot the device holding vol up + vol down + power
You will see a black screen with white writing (vol buttons are up/down, camera button is enter/ok)
Enter "Software upgrade via Update.pkg on SD Card" (This takes you into the "The Clockwork Recovery Image" used to update via a unsigned zip file)
You will now be on a black screen with green writing
Enter "apply sdcard:update.zip"
Go down to "Yes - Install /sdcard/update.zip)
This will load the update
***Factory resets and wiping data***
(I am not sure if the clockwork factory reset and dell factory reset do the same so I run both to make sure.)
Enter "Wipe data/factory reset"
Enter "Wipe cache partition"
Enter "Reboot system now" (after entering "Reboot system now" quickly hold vol up + vol down)
Enter "1. Factory Reset"
Enter "4. Power off"
Power you device back on (Power button on its own)
You will find that the first boot it will seem to hang on the Dell logo for upto 20 minutes, leave it hanging for 20 minutes.
Congrats you should have v1.5.3 loaded with the Android 2.2 goodness.
***Optional HD video Fix***
Turn off you device
hold camera + power.
disconnect the cable
enter fastboot (top right)
count to 10, connect the cable
in command prompt:
fastboot -i 0x413c flash dsp1 dsp1.mbn
wait until your device displays "Download DSP1 Done!"
fastboot -i 0x413c reboot
***Updating StreakDroid***
Now that you are on StreakDroid upgrading to a new version is very simple.
Download the latest version as listed:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8509320&postcount=1
**READ THE FIRST POST!** to make sure that it isn't going to require a factory reset or any other special instructions.
Copy the new .zip file to your sdcard
Rename the .zip file to "Update.zip" (it's case SeNsItIvE)
Power down the device
Boot the device holding vol up + vol down + power
You will see a black screen with white writing (vol buttons are up/down, camera button is enter/ok)
Enter "Software upgrade via Update.pkg on SD Card" (This takes you into the "The Clockwork Recovery Image" used to update via a unsigned zip file)
You will now be on a black screen with green writing
Enter "apply sdcard:update.zip"
Go down to "Yes - Install /sdcard/update.zip)
This will load the update
Enter "Wipe cache partition"
Enter "Reboot system now"
You will find that the first boot it will seem to hang on the Dell logo for upto 20 minutes, leave it hanging for 20 minutes.

Please let me know any feedback, corrections, and so forth.
If it seems no one is interested in it then I'll just let to wander into the cyber graveyard.

fastboot -i 0x413c reboot

***flash new baseband***
in command prompt:

I would put something like "wait until you get the message on your Streak FINISHED UPDATING" before rebooting, or you know someone is going to say "you didn't say to wait!"
Also, on this part:

No problems, sounds like a good idea to state to wait. However you cannot type fastboot -i 0x412c reboot untill it's finished anyway.

First post updated - see notes
sucess! finally!!!! I am been strugling going from 02 2.1 to streakdroid. Everyone keeps pointing to the upgrading and downloading post instructions which doesnt work if you follow the o2 upgrade step. I kept having to revert back to o2.
This worked perfect first time.
One thing I noticed was "Extract "The StreakDroid FroYo v1.5.0 firmware" to you sd card"
You dont actually extract the zip or its not a zip anymore. just download and move to the root of your sd card and rename.
It took me a second to realize but someone else may miss that.
Thank you!!!
Thanks this instruction works on my ATT with unlock 2.2

Of course, I would be more than happy to help you.
When you select "Software upgrade via Update.pkg" what do you get? typically if you have flashed the Clockwork Recovery Mod you will get one of two results:
1) Nothing i.e. a blank screen.
or
2) A black screen with green writing.
If for some reason you don't get either of these results please reflash the clockwork recovery mod.
***flash custom recovery***
in command prompt:
fastboot -i 0x413c flash recovery recovery.alt.img
wait until your device displays "Download RECOVERY Done!"
fastboot -i 0x413c reboot

If however you get a blank screen then please download:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=379947&d=1281798362
extract recovery.zip to c:\fastboot
***flash custom recovery***

Then try continuing from where you left off.
Please try the above and let me know how you get on.
Hi, I am all new to this android thing, and since I'm plug & play kind of user, all these data only confuses me.
So i'm beging for help...
My dell streak was bought in Croatia (europe), T mobile, but device is unlocked and I'm using "tele2" network.
Firmware on streak is 1.6. build No. 6267
I don't know what guide to use for upgrade to 2.2.
I've got a notiffication for upgrade, but as I'm using limited mobile internet, I cannot connect to my home wifi, (Iskon + Carnet) it is somehow protected and you can only connect to it through windows on computer; and I don't know how MB will it take.
So please, help this ignorante woman to figure out this thingy
Did I mentioned I was blond?
Dr.Dellka,
If you are getting an update notice on your device then based on your "plug and play" description of yourself I think you would be better leaving these unofficial updates and using the official one that you device is showing you.
typically an update is between 100-200MB.
Without connecting your device to a internet connection for the update the only other way would be to download the .pkg file and transfer it to the root of your sdcard, reboot holding power+vol up & vol down and then select "Software upgrade via Update.pkg on SD Card".
Unfortunately because I haven't looked into this method of official update I do not currently know where to source the official Update.pkg file. Hopefully someone else on the forum will be able to help with this.

need your help qisback, i have being trying to update from o2 2.1 to to dj steve's 1.5.1 now for a few days and still no luck . im having problems with the fast boot.i get up to fastboot-mode and then open command promt and type goto c:\fastboot.enter and then.fastboot -i 0x413c flash recovery recovery.alt.img. and thi is what i get .fastboot is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.i don't anderstand why i have done step by step as you have described on post 1 . i really need your advice. thanks in advance
Check in the c:\fastboot folder there will be a file called fastboot-windows.exe rename that to fastboot.exe and you should be good to go
yes i have done all that. i feel like pulling my hair out.
Hello The Monster,
I'm sorry to hear that. Typically if you are getting "not recognized as an internal or external command" style responses from the command prompt it's because either:
a) The file isn't in the right place/called the right thing.
b) Your not in the right place/calling the right thing.
So long as you have done the following
Extract "The Fastboot tool" to c:\fastboot
Rename "fastboot-windows.exe" to "fastboot.exe"
Click to collapse
You should then be able to do the following in the command prompt
cd c:\fastboot
fastboot -i 0x413c flash recovery recovery.alt.img
Click to collapse
**wait until your device displays "Download RECOVERY Done!"**
fastboot -i 0x413c reboot
Click to collapse
Please try the above, if it doesn't work then please take a screenshot of the following:
**make sure the error has just occurred**
Select the "Command Prompt" window
type "dir" and press enter.
Press Alt + Print Screen (this will capture just the "Command Prompt" window.
Open MS Paint (either via start or run -> mspaint.exe)
Paste the clipboard (either edit -> paste or ctrl + v)
Save as a jpeg and attach to your next post.

thanks for the guide, helped out well. My baseband changed from 21 to 00 which is what I wanted having my O2 Streak unlocked already, so thats good.

If however you get a blank screen then please download:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=379947&d=1281798362
Then try continuing from where you left off.
Please try the above and let me know how you get on.

If I'm reading this right, I see two problems: 1) the fastboot file has no extension. it should be "fastboot.exe", not "fastboot"; 2) the file size is 0 bytes.
Try deleting the 0 byte "fastboot" file, re-extracting the "fastboot-windows.exe", and renaming to "fastboot.exe"
And to qisback: nice work! I appreciate your effort in explaining what you're actually doing. When I joined the unofficial android upgrade bandwagon a few months ago, I had a heck of a time, largely cause I didn't have a clue what i was trying to do, nor if i had completed each step successfully.
@The Monster I have to agree with Gtg203a the file doesn't seem to be correctly named it should have an "exe" extension and it's file size is 0k. As suggested a fresh download of the fastboot archive and extracting it as per my guide should sort the issue.
@gtg203a I'm glad you found the guide clear and informative, we've all been in a situation where a nice simple guide would be really handy which was the idea of this tutorial. I certainly know that I was in exactly the same place as you a few months ago.
I would normally try give more details and quote posts but as I'm away for a few days I'm using the XDA App and it seems to lack these quick functions or I can't find them and I don't fancy copying, pasting and writting quote tags on an android device (even if my phone does have a 5 foot screen and resembles a house brick).

[Q] Am I being a retard?

I've searched everywhere and I can't find conclusive information on how to "fastboot a recovery image"
I'm sure i could do it if there was a how to, but I can't seem to find any?
please help!
P.s I know how to get into fastboot on my streak but I dont know what all the numbers mean on the screen or where I go from there to install the recovery from the sd card.
i was!!
hehe...we all were at first....worried bout bricking our lovely toys and trying to filter all the posts n posts n post..
have you seen this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000455
seems to be a fully automated process
So if I am correct, this will let me flash a recovery so that I can install Streakdroid yes?
to install a streakdroid rom you will have to ignore my previous comment as the are for stock recovery. you will need to flash over clockwork or, the more streak compatible streakmod.
1. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=840326
^^^ the post on flashing streakmod to enable flashing zip packages
2. To stop the stock recovery overwritting the recovery you should do:
Rename --- "etc/install-recovery.sh" . (just add ".bak" to stop the system using install-recovery.sh"
Im still slightly retarded but hope this clarifies things
oh....btw... i struggled with the fastboot command.. but found out the full proper command is "fastboot -i 0x413c flash recovery recovery.img
"
i.e. 0.x413c must be added so the fastboot command knows what device its talking to..
(Hope this has been useful....had so much fun learning in these forums at XDA would be nice if i could help people in return - IM A RETARD TOO!)
Ok, The thing is, I read through all of that but something is missing.
At what stage do I type things? whats the process for that?
and where exactly do I rename this file?
I know the steps before and after - I'm missing the bit in between here.
k...let me see if i can clarify..
reread the instructions....to make is easier and automated for u, i would suggest the following..(although i did it the manual way this should be painless!!)
1. ensure you have the latest dell drivers installed and that in the device manger you have your Android Composite ADB device up n running.
2. from this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1000455 download the MultiRecoveryFlasher v.0.3 and the bat file too.
extract to say C:\
(copy the extracted bat file into the same directory.
3. with power off, turn on streak hold the camera button and then the power button together until you get to the white screen, then select fastboot...
4. now double click that bat file in your directory and option 7, and wait 10 secs
5. now connect your streak usb cable to the pc
it should install the latest streakmod automatically for you....
6. when successful run, using the bat file select option 9 to reboot the phone (takes a few seconds for it to happen)
7. exit the bat file.....finished with pc
8. when streak has booted to normal...using root explorer navigate to the folder "system/etc/" and locate file "install-recovery.sh" long press on that file and rename.....rename to install-recovery.sh.bak (by just adding .bak)
9. power off phone and once again boot into fastboot as per 3. to ensure you still have streakmod.....if all is well you can then go ahead and flash your zip from sd card roms.
10. if you get the stock recovery option already overwritten the streakmod just repeat steps above 3-7..
as i said i did it the manual way...but im sure that following these steps using the uksheep's programme you will find it painless........
let me know if it worked or if im still a superdelux, mark1, grade A duffer (was hoping to be grade B by now lololo)
edit...you are rooted??? download root explorer pro...its on the net....tap the R/W button to enable renaming of system files first...be careful!!...also you boot into recovery by holding both volume buttons AND th epower button until you get the four options menu. You have to select option 2 whic will take you to the streakmod (you will see dell symbols..press power button again when you do to access streakmod functions..
megacamz....have you read the pdf here....

No Market on my streak! :o(

Hi I have no Market to install any applications,it won't install anything through a PC connection and it's in a factory reset state. I did a lot of research and tried to re-install the vending.apk file which controls it through an adb command prompt but it then fails on the permissions. I have rooted the phone but at the moment is useless because I cant get it to install any other rooted applications! Can anyone help me solve my dilemma. I'm not very good when it comes to programming and coding and have learned all I know from forums. So at the moment all my Dell Streak is an oversized mobile phone! Regards, Tris.
You rooted the phone. Did you delete the Market.apk by accident?
In any event, you should be able to get the Market.apk file here. Save it to your MicroSD card and then run it using a file explorer. That should fix your Market problem in the interim, although you would probably do better restoring your ROM.
Tried to install that used 'Astro' all was well but when I run the market it says it stopped unexpectedly and asks me to force close.
Been trying to Restore Rom using this method, only problem is I cant find the fastboot-windows.exe to continue the flash:-
HOW TO RESTORE YOUR STREAK BACK TO FACTORY CONDITION:
1. Download the stock recovery ROM here and the stock official Dell ROM here.
2. Rename the stock official Dell ROM 'Update.pkg' and put it in the root directory on your SD card.
3. Boot Streak in fastboot mode (hold camera button when turning on), press 'Fastboot Mode' button, wait 10 seconds then connect to your PC (must have Dell PC suite installed).
4. Open a command prompt, navigate to the folder where your 'fastboot-windows.exe' is stored.
5. Type 'fastboot-windows.exe -i 0x413c flash recovery c:\recovery.stock.img' . Make sure the .img file is in c:\ directory. The program will now update the recovery image on your Streak.
6. Once the phone reads 'Recovery Done', remove the battery and insert it again.
7. Boot Streak in Recovery mode (hold down vol up and vol down when turning on) and select option 2.
5. Wait till it installs and it'll boot into Android....DONE!
Any ideas why it now force closes and where that fastboot file should come from?
Thanks again.
Questions:
1. You've rooted your streak. What recovery image did you use?
2. Did you go to /system/etc and change "install-recovery.sh" to "install-recovery.sh.bak"?
While the first question is mainly for curiosity, the second question is very important. It tells me whether the recovery image in question 1 actually stuck around or was replaced by the default recovery image.
For best results, look for multi-recovery flasher in the development forum and use that to restore a default recovery image to the Streak instead of doing it manually. It includes all the files you need, including the fastboot file. After that, go to the wiki and download an official ROM image from there.
I have no idea what is causing the force closes, and that is why I'm recommending starting fresh from a stock ROM in the first place.
Thanks for your help, managed to get the job done. All that stuff wasn't necessary but appreciate the quick reply.
First I managed to download a Stock Dell o2-UK 2.2 Rom form the Dell website Here:- http: //cot.ag/fKoFRX
Then I followed another guide I found by changing the filename to 'update.pkg', putting it on the SD cards Root directory and booting into recovery Mode (Hold down both Volume buttons while powering on) selected the install form SD option and just let it do its work! Buzzing!!!
At least I can do this again in the future if things go wrong once more(I HOPE NOT)!! I can't help myself you see,i'm one of those people where the last thing I did just isn't enough!
Once again thanks for the help and maybe I hope this could help someone else who needs a jargon free solution to a fresh stock install.Tris.
In simpler language, your recovery image was a stock one, so you only had to follow the Dell standard procedure for replacing the ROM.
P. S. Use the thanks button if I was of help.

You will have to become familiar with using fastboot.
If you are stuck on dell logo, you will have no options but to flash stock recovery and then flash the correct stock rom.
Apart from below method, if you cannot get to fastboot screen, then download QDLTool as that is said to work also.
Here are listed some facts, tools and links to roms and recovery images.
Download Dell Streak drivers, fastboot driver and exe, Dell Streak PC Suite.
Download the recovery img and the corresponding choice of rom image, put the rom image on your sd card and rename it update.pkg.
cc
Place fastboot.exe and recovery.img in the root of your C drive, C:\
Now using fastboot, assuming you have installed fastboot driver and dell streak driver.
Get your device into fastboot mode, hold down power and camera shutter button at the same time.
At the white screen choose fastboot, wait abotu 10 seconds while it tries to detect usb then connect your cable from pc into your phone.
Now open a command prompt in windows.
In command prompt box type:
fastboot -i 0x413c flash recovery recovery.img
Your chosen roms recovery.img should be flashed to the phone. Now reboot the phone using command at prompt: fastboot -i 0x413c reboot
Now hold down volume up and volume down at dell logo, get into recovery mode, and then press the camera shutter button, and your stock rom of choice should be flashed to your phone.
You should now have a working phone, once flashed do a factory reset to make sure all is good.

So what is the score now, what do you want on your phone, or should we say, what can you get installed that works ok.
QDLTool latest should work fine. If you cannot get QDLTool or fastboot recovery.img and flash etc to work, then surely you have a big problem. I have flashed to custom roms and back to stock roms simply using fastboot recovery.img and rom .pkg for stock roms and streakmod to flash .zip packages with custom roms.
But others are better qualified to help to be honest, but the tools i have mentioned are the tools of emergency recovery, if that fails, its something more serious.
I'm pretty much in the same boat as Arif.
Your instructions are great, and they go very well until this part: "Now hold down volume up and volume down at dell logo, get into recovery mode, and then press the camera shutter button, and your stock rom of choice should be flashed to your phone."
I've always been able to get into recovery mode this way where there are options for factory reset, software upgrade, and screen calibration. (Software upgrade gives me "Cannot mount mnt/sdcard/update.pkg - no such file or directory")
Didn't you just have me flash a new recovery? How do I get to it?
Did you flash the recovery using fast boot and then go straight into recovery before the phpne boots up again? If it boots I think it automatically rewrites the recovery to stock if you are currently on a stock rom.
Sent from my Dell Streak using xda premium
It seems like it's successfully flashing recovery using fastboot, the command prompt says "writing/sending recovery .... okay .... finished" and the phone's fastboot screen says "fastboot mode .... download complete".
Then I reboot using the command prompt and as soon as the screen goes from fastboot to black I hold the volume buttons until it gets to recovery. ....but it still looks like stock recovery. and when I hit the camera button to apply the update, I get the "can't mount update.zip" error.
so far I've tried the 407 and 360 roms/recoveries from this page: http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/Dell_Streak_5#ROMs - should I just keep trying different roms & recoveries?
I found a post here on xda saying that the sd card might have to be formatted as ext3.
I tried that, and still it's the same error "E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk1p5"

[Tutorial] Root, Unlock, Recovery and flashing a Custom ROM

This is long, but it's nice for noobs because it's detailed. It's honestly kind of fun, I promise. I'm assuming you have WINDOWS. This is based off of the guide by torxx!. It's modified because some of the info is outdated (you don't have to flash the boot.mg separately, for example). If you are NOT a noob you can just look at the "overview" for each step. This will work with all versions of the HTC One, assuming the kernel works. I have only tested the kernel with the T-mobile variant because that's what I have.
UNLOCKING YOUR DEVICE WILL WIPE YOUR DEVICE. THIS IS A SECURITY FEATURE. BACKUP FIRST.
Part 1- gaining unlock token
Overview: go to htcdev.com and unlock bootloader
Be sure you've turned off fast boot option in power menu; usb debugging should be on (settings -> developer options).
Go to http://www.htc.com/www/software/htc-sync-manager/[1] and install HTC SYNC. Alternatively, if you know what you're doing, you can install these drivers:
x86 http://www.mediafire.com/?qabo1tue2v1ky75 x64 http://www.mediafire.com/?8dl8s3l9mr6ggr9
Go on http://www.htcdev.com[4] and create yourself an account on HTCDEV.
Download these adb/fastboot files: http://d-h.st/RvD
Make a new folder anywhere. We'll use C:/fastboot as an example.
Extract the zip downloaded to the new folder
Go Here http://www.htcdev.com/bootloader/[6] and select "All Other Supported Models" and "then begin unlock bootloader" (check the boxes, click proceed, all that good stuff). YOU CAN IGNORE THE DIRECTIONS THAT THEY TELL YOU (and follow this guide instead).
Power off your phone. Power your phone on by holding power and volume down.
Highlight 'Fastboot' the volume buttons then press power to "select".
Plug your phone into your PC and open a Command Prompt. (windows XP - Click Start > Run > type CMD in box then press OK; Windows 7 - Click Start > type CMD in search box then press Enter) Change directory to your folder where we put fastboot files by typing cd c:\fastboot for example.*
*Alternatively, you can just hold down shift and right click in the folder and select "open command window here". Neat huh?
Type this into your command prompt window: fastboot oem get_identifier_token
Select & copy the text as per step 9 on the HTCDev website
Paste your identifier token into the box at the bottom and submit
You Will Very Shortly Receive an email from HTCDev with a link to the second part of the instructions and your "Unlock_code.bin" attached
Download the "Unlock_code.bin" from the email and save it to the same folder that we extracted fastboot files
Type this into your command prompt window: fastboot flash unlocktoken Unlock_code.bin
The Display Will change on your phone, press Vol+ to accept and power to confirm.
Part 2
Overview: flash your recovery. Boot into recovery. Turn phone off if it boots into OS. Boot into back into recovery. You're done!
Download a recovery:
TWRP (the one I use): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2173870
CWM 2: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2172979
CWM: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2173863
Place the Recovery file to the folder where the fastboot.exe is.
Same thing as above- boot (volume down + power) into the bootloader and highlight 'Fastboot' the volume buttons then press power to "select".
Do the same thing as with the command prompt above. This time, however, you'll be typing:
fastboot flash recovery "name_of_the_recovery.img"
For example:
fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.5.0.0-m7.img
then type:
fastboot erase cache
From the menu, boot into recovery (use volume to move up and down, power to select). The phone might boot to the OS instead of recovery, don't worry!
Turn off phone then turn on (while holding volume down) to boot back into the bootloader.
TAMPERED shows up, boot into recovery and now your recovery should be working!
Part 3- obtaining root
Overview: flash a super tool
Download a super user tool for root:
SuperSU (I use this one): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053
SuperUser: http://download.clockworkmod.com/superuser/superuser.zip
Alternatively, download this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2266025. This is a stock rooted rom for T-Mobile. If you download and flash this instead of the super user tool, you're done. (This rom includes super user)
Turn on your phone again (and disable usb debugging) and connect to computer, copy the .zip super user tool to a location you remember ON the phone.
Flash it with the Recovery: Power off your device and then hold the VOL DOWN + Power to boot into the Bootloader Navigate with VOL and Power to Recovery Now flash the .zip:
- install zip from sdcard
- choose zip from sdcard
- select the downloaded SuperSU/SuperUser zip file and flash it
- Reboot now
If you are a t-mobile user you're not out of the woods yet! The stock kernel is system write protected, so you still can't modify it (changes won't "stick"). You'll have to flash a custom rom or a kernel if you want stock instead.
I recommend these kernels: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2255900 or http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2233665&highlight=menu
Download it.
Installing custom rom/kernel ("flashing a rom")
Overview: Download Rom, boot into recovery and wipe and then flash.
According to Shenye, even though your device is s-on, you can still flash boot now. So just do this:
Turn on your phone again (and disable usb debugging) and connect to computer, copy the .zip kernel/cutom rom to a location you remember ON the phone.

This time, however, you'll be typing:
fastboot flash recovery name_of_the_recovery.img
For example:
fastboot flash recovery openrecovery-twrp-2.5.0.0-m7.img
then type:
fastboot erase cache
From the menu, boot into recovery (use volume to move up and down, power to select). The phone might boot to the OS instead of recovery, don't worry!
Turn off phone then turn on (while holding volume down) to boot back into the bootloader.
TAMPERED shows up, boot into recovery and now your recovery should be working!
Part 3- obtaining root
Overview: flash a super tool
Download a super user tool for root:
SuperSU (I use this one): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1538053
SuperUser: http://download.clockworkmod.com/superuser/superuser.zip
Alternatively, download this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2266025. This is a stock rooted rom.
Flash it with the Recovery: Power off your device and then hold the VOL DOWN + Power to boot into the Bootloader Navigate with VOL and Power to Recovery Now flash the .zip:
- install zip from sdcard
- choose zip from sdcard
- select the downloaded SuperSU/SuperUser zip file and flash it
- Reboot now

thanks! this worked great. perfect for all the noobs
Thanks!! I was on the fence about rooting (since the one is so great out of the box) but had an immediate need for tethering. You got me up and running in ~20 Minutes!!
Glad to hear! I think you may have rooted your phone faster than me, lol.
Thank you for this. I am on the fence about which new device i will be purchasing and good to know someone went to the trouble with rooting instructions

The only problem is that it has not been zipped, so we cannot use it to flash back to stock yet. Once it does, I'm going to be all over it! I wish I had been a bit more patient and just stuck out stock a few days more. I would've been able to realize how much disabling of installed apps just through the HTC settings menu. Not everything can be "disabled", but quite a bit can...
One of the few times where I think stock software is pretty good! Props to HTC!
I've heard this kinda thing voids the warranty, is that the case for the t-mobile 0ne?
Great tutorial but as usual I have been having saveer problems getting the HTC device to install properly so it can be detected in fastboot and recovery. Have been trying on both my laptop and desktop all day...

Where are you stuck? I heard there was a problem with Win 8 x64 on usb 3.0.
Their was a problem for me with Windows 7 pro on my desktop but i finaly got it to work on my laptop.. I am led to think due to previous issues ultimate works better than pro or perhaps my hardware configuration on my homebrew leads windows to have certain comparability issues... The issue is spacifically with hardware detection and driver install errors. But like I said I got it to work on my laptop.

How easy is it to revert back to stock if you decide you don't want to use a custom rom anymore? Are factory images available to flash? Is it as easy as Samsung phones?
