I was just wondering what happens if you try to install an apk file by clicking on it if the description of it calls for it to be pushed to the phone?
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
Only needs to be pushed if it has to go to a certain part of the phone. Apk's can be installed with a file manager by clicking on it. Just have unknown sources checked if it's a non market app. What are u trying to install?

It will just fail. You can try this with install_flash_player.apk (for Flash 10.1). If you don't push that to /System, it will simply give you an error when you click on it.
I'm running the latest axura rom which is missing the google news and weather widget. A link was posted to an apk for it but stated it needs to be pushed. Me just out of curiosity clicked on open after I downloaded the file and since it acted like a normal apk giving me the install options I just wondered what would happen if I actually installed it that way versus the directed push way.

If it failed I would push it

I saw online that xda has made some skins for the thunderbolt. I have been searching the web and I can't seem to figure out how to download them onto my thunderbolt. I know I must be missing something. I just don't know where to find the actual skins. Help please?

Make sure when you download it. Make sure it says .apk at the end.
Dusk.apk
I don't know where to find the actual ones I can download. I don't even know where to start looking. Do you know where I can find them?

Check under themes and miss. Lots of cool stuff and info there.

Here you go.
I sound so dumb :-/

I downloaded one skin from that link and it said "there was a problem parsing my application. What does that mean?
Sent from my ADR6400L using XDA App
Was the extension .apk
I get the same errors... no matter the .APK file I download to install a skin I get a parsing error. App manager doesn't see it as a legitimate APK file for some reason and get the parsing error and fails.. every single time
When get any can off error I restart my phone. The best solution for you my friend would be. Downloading the HTC skins on the computer. And putting them on your phones SD card and use a file manager to install them.
Just follow the most easy steps and u have the skin. Between step 6-7 I installed the skin.
Yup that's definitely how it's supposed to work. But the parse errors still pop up when in the app manager
How are you downloading them?
While we try to get the Market to give up the crown jewels, is there a trusted repo of apk files or perhaps some way I can find the md5 sums of official market place versions so that I can check the versions I "source" myself..? Up front I'm interested in Skype 2.5.0.160 and Facebook 1.7.2. I'm not looking for links. I kind find them just fine, what I really need is to be able to confirm their integrity before I install them.
Download and install the apps from market on your mobile phone.
Take the backup of those apps using Astro or ES File explorer.
Browse to sdcard/backups for your apks.
Send them to your Nook Tablet through email.
Open the apk in Nook Tablet and install through package installer.

there is an app called myappsharer in the market. It will let you email apk's without the hassle of backing up.

I know how to change the defaults that is not my issue.
I came from the first Galaxy S running crayogen ICS and the messaging app on that is way better than the Samsung one, it just sucks.
I tired installing the apk from the crayogen rom but I keep getting an error.
When I try I get the this is a system app are you sure you want to continue and replace it. I then select install and just get a error Application not installed.
So I used root explorer, found the default samsung app, renamed it, copied over the other app with the same name and installed it from within the system folder and it worked, so it is now working but it doesn't look the same as it did on my old phone.
Any help?
This is the XT9 message app with dark background thy this install just like you did b4
couldn't get that one to work for some reason, did the same thing and kept getting unable to install error
Try Go SMS Pro?
I use GO SMS Pro also and its awesome! You are correct...The stock messaging app is god awful!
I use Handcent and it's way better than stock.
Instead of renaming the secmms.apk, make a copy and pt it on your sdcard. Delete it from your system/app folder, push the new apk to system/apk.
Reboot. It should bout to the Android is updating screen if it worked.

Thanks for that, but it still didn't work it defaults to the app but it still isn't working correctly and doesn't look like the old app I use to have and when I open settings it always crashes.
What I have done is disabled the default messaging app in settings, installed GoSms and using that as the default. Its not bad and better to adapt to but still miss the CyanogenMod messaging app I had on the I9000
Thanks for the replys
Have you modded the app at all? You might have to sign it before it will install/work
Name it Mms.apk

Modded system apps should not be signed, fwiw.
Here are some apks that change the icons on your home screen and your app drawer.
Thanks to Pfaffinator for the icons.
1 go to system/ app and copy your entire app file then place it on an sd card for backup if you want to revert back to your original icons.
2 copy these new apks to system/ app. Your phone will ask if you want to replace your old apk with the new one...tap yes then profit.
3 I do not know how to make a zip file yet as I am still learning.
4 I will add more as I theme more icons.

If you flash super Jelly, use the super Jelly updater to download a blank zip. You then use an archive manager like 7zip or winrar to place the apk's in the system/app folder. I think it has to be signed for JB, not sure how to do that tho.
Thanks for sharing tho. If these are someone else's work can you give them credit? If this is your work, nice job!
Edit: saw you said you were theming the icons. Sorry if I offended by suggesting this was another person's work

Sorry my mistake. I didn't make the icons. I put them in the apks to use with our phones. Thank you for making me aware that I needed to do that.

Pull the apks modified. Either adb pull system > w/e.apk. or do it via phone via a root powered file explore. Place the apks on your sdcard. Mount the device place on your computer. That download a theme or a mod zip. And archive into that make your changes etc flash to test then release as a theme. Message me about if you already haven't ill get to you as soon as I can.

Did it force close once or does it work correctly now? If it doesn't work correctly and you made a backup on your SD card of your original APks you can just pull the NFC apk only and put it back in system app.

Can someone who got these to work explain to me how they did it? I downloaded the YouTube file went to es file explorer copied the apk went to system/apps pasted it then it asked me if I wanted to overwrite I pressed yes it said it was installed successfully but when I go to my app drawer nothing changes...any help would be appreciated Tia
Edit: nevermind after I rebooted it changed..you should put that you need to reboot in the instructions so less educated people like me know that..thanks for these they are sweet and go with my chrome theme!

Hi all,
the title basically says it all:
When I install an app via apk file (because let's say the app is not yet available in Play but the apk was leaked), will I be able to get updates through Play once it has arrived there? Or will I have to reinstall the app from the Play Store and loose all app-related data (for example game states...)?
Whenever I have side loaded an .apk I always get updates through market. But then again every app I have side loaded I have downloaded at one point or another but I should assume your just fine
Sent from my Nexus 4 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
You may have to manually update the app the first time, it may not show up in your My Apps list. Also if the existing apk has been modified it may not let you update without uninstalling first. IIRC it has something to do with the app signatures not matching when an apk gets modified, like a video app that has been modified to work with root.
