Just wondering about the different backups that are recommended before reflashing
You can do an apps + contacts type back up with say titanium. I take it you then save these back ups to say a desktop/laptop.
My question is, what does the NAND backup save, where is the backup saved and the next step is usually to do a full wipe. Does this not wipe what you have just backed up?

Hello Macolli,
you are correct about the titanium backup, but personally I just let the backup remain on the SD card. The nandroid backup consists of filesystem images of the phones internal memories, and are also stored on the SD card. They are located in the "nandroid" folder, one subfolder per backup. The full wipe only clears the internal memory areas in the phone, not the SD card.

If I have 2 or 3 ROMS i want to try, and test each one for a week or so once i find one i prefer can i just to a restore of that ROM from the NAND option or is it best to reflash?
i would restore it because then i would not have to download the apps again

I want to wipe /sdcard and then to restore apps and data. So what I'll do:
1. Titanium Backup for all apps and data.
2. Wipe /sdcard.
3. Reinstall a fresh Titanium Backup.
But -- Titanium Backup is now fresh, so it doesn't have the apps and data backup I made earlier to restore from.
So the question is:
Does it suffice to copy the entire old Titanium Backup directory into the fresh (and empty) Titanium Backup directory?
Will the option 'restore missing apps with data' show all the stuff I backed up?
Mmm I did this when I moved to a custom JB rom. Like you said if you wipe sd card you will loose all the TB data. I'm not sure if you can move the TB folder to your pc then move it back after the wipe to restore your apps. I personally decided not to as I wanted to make sure I only had JB compatible apps on my phone as I was moving from an ICS rom. Perhaps other users have done this and can advise further.

I've been reading some conflicting information about nandroid backups. Do they actually back up everything on your phone, minus the micro SD card, or do I need something like Titanium to supplement it?
I've read both, so I'm looking for some clarification on exactly what steps I need to take to make sure everything is safe.
They backup everything.
The sd card is not backed up ie-music,videos,etc but everything else is backed up. u can use pc to backup sd card.
CWM actually backups the whole rom; system, boot, data and cache folders so when you restore a nandroid backup your rom will be exactly as you backup it; the apps and there data and every thing else related to the rom will be restored.
Hi,
I installed Greenify and hibernated some apps and thereafter the phone restarted on its own and is stuck in the RevoltJB logo screen.
I've tried almost everything, from taking the battery out, clearing dalvick cache and flashing the RevoltJB rom again but it's not booting.
I've made a nandroid copy to the Sd Card, system / app, data files say complete but then when it's backing up the music/videos/pics it fails. Not enough memory.
Does that mean that the nandroid backup of system apps (sms/call logs) and my sisters apps/data (whatsapp message history) haven't been backed up?
I also made a internal copy and that seemed to backup everything. Hardly any pics or music on internal memory, plus it had 8gb free.
Does that mean that both the internal and sd card backup the same things?? And can I factory reset and reinstall the RevoltJB rom and then using titanium backup get back her whatsapp messages, her sms and call logs not to mention her stupid level 50 candycrush data?
Please can someone tell me if I've been able to make a successful nandroid backup on either the sd (even if it only backed up system/apps) or internal memory and whether I have any chance of a recovery of her sms, whatsapp and candycrush data.
PS if i reinstall jb rom it won't delete my nandroid backup will it...?

You don't need to worry much after making the nandroid backup you can safely wipe data/cache/dalvik cache and reflash the ROM, also along with TB try using the app nandroid manager to restore the apps,call logs, contact's etc. from the previous nandroid backup, and be careful to not format /sdcard partition its where all your data like your music,videos, nandroid backup, and other data is kept.
Hmmm seems you don't use your internal SD card much, and making a backup anywhere is not problem it will be the same thing done twice whether it be in the internal or the external SD card, just try to make a successful backup by freeing up some space, also if you have the patience to read a lot try using Aroma file manager to manually handle the required files like the contact database and stuff, though I would advice a noob to hold off until he's more experienced.

I think you froze a system app....look at @MistahBungle 's signature and read what it says.
Do a factory reset and a ROM reflash.This is the only thing you can do.And yes,all her messages and game data will be gone (you can maybe extract them manually from the Nandroid backup)

I only have about 1.8GB left on my internal storage... I dont have an external sd card right now.
The backup size is about 2.8GB... so I am 1GB short...
My question is, if I backup System and Boot as first batch, then transfer the file to my PC to free up my phone again, then backup Data as 2nd batch and transfer that to my PC again..... now once I want to restore my backup, will those 2 batches of restore process work or not? Im not sure if a nandroid backup needs to be a single file only.... Im out of storage capacity that's why splitting the backup is my only option

I have a Samsung S6, and want to install my first ever ROM (gonna be Cyanogen Mod 12 or 13). It's recommended that I backup my device, but need help with using TWRP.
I clicked 'Backup' in recovery, and it comes up with options to backup: Boot, System, Data, Cache, EFS and another thing I can't remember. I assume I need to backup Boot and System, because I am assuming that this is the Marshmallow OS and Boot. I also want to backup Data, because I do not want to lose my apps, pictures and music. However, to backup all of them at once is too large of a file.
Instead, I decided to backup them all separately, then move them over to my PC and delete them from my phone. My question is, if I want to restore my phone, is it possible to restore each backup separately, of do I need to join them up into one file. If so, how do I do it?

P.S. DO I NEED TO BACKUP THE EFS, CACHE AND OTHER THING I CANNOT REMEMBER???
You can backup to a flash drive using USB OTG cable as well. You will want to backup boot, system, and data. EFS is not needed, but I find it a good practice to back it up and save it to a safe spot like your computer. The nandroid will back up each partition separately into a folder marked with the date. You can restore each individual part as needed. Just keep everything in the folder as it was set up for ease of use.
Also, your /data backup will not include music and pictures. It will back up data/data and data/app. The pictures and music are stored in data/media, or what the phone and recovery see as /sdcard though it is an emulated point and not a physical "sd card". When you perform a factory reset in recovery, it does not wipe /data/media, thus leaving everything on /sdcard intact. Though I do recommend making a copy of that to a safe space as well. It's just not what a nandroid backs up.
