ROM is now also available on ROM Manager! Also, additional options have been added to the Rom Manager download, such as optional installs of the Fascinate's stock Mms.apk, puzzle piece lockscreen, and visual voicemail.
So here's a ROM for all you trigger happy flashers out there. It's based upon the DI01 ota update, with ALL vzw/sammy bloat removed (even the power up jingle is gone) and some aosp apps thrown in. Also included is the stock 2.1 lockscreen.
All apk's are deodexed/optipng'd/zipalign'd, aosp apps built straight from source (available on my github, github.com/jt1134). TouchWiz launcher has been replaced with ADWLauncher. Also included are fully functional busybox and bash binaries. A custom kernel is NOT included in this ROM.
This zip will format /system, data wipe likely NOT required, but it's always a good idea. Flash it with ClockworkMod recovery.
Enjoy, and please stop with the useless threads. Thanks.

If you get fc's, wipe data/cache and/or fixpermissions from ClockworkMod and/or try booting first without your sdcard inserted. That media scanner is a skank ho.
EDIT: replaced Calendar with stock TW Calendar, added working CarDock and a few misc. apps that may help with the issues people are having.
EDIT: readded TWLauncher for those that may want it. sync issues *should* be fixed. also added a few other misc helper tools.
EDIT: also attached is an update.zip to restore the puzzle piece unlock screen.

EDIT 10/28 - version 0.3 :
added newest versions of:
Google Maps (4.6.0)
ADWLauncher (1.2.0)
Android Market (Froyo Version)
YouTube (latest Froyo Version)
new:
added nano (just for you ludeboy - untested at the moment)
added snazzy bootanimation for those with a compatible kernel
added EnhancedGoogleSearch.apk that I somehow missed before

EDIT 10/30 - version 0.4 :
new:
added Bing-less Browser.apk from Mesmerize
added Contacts.apk with swipe to call/text from Mesmerize
added libsecgps.so from Mesmerize (light testing shows some gps improvement)
added additional hostnames to /system/etc/hosts for ad-blocking

Only noticed 2 bugs. The aosp calendar app is included, and has a weird grey bar across the top of the screen on all calendar views. Still investigating that. The other issue is an acore fc when putting the phone in airplane mode. It can apparently be safely ignored however, and the device does go into airplane mode.

Thanks a million for this... I was also getting the random FCs but used Clockwork to fix permissions, rebooted, and now its working just fine.
First off, all credit on figuring out this mod goes to untermensch, thanks a ton!
Please see his post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8542257&postcount=6114
So, this is the Mms.apk from Cyanogen Mod 5.0.8 (taken from the nexus 1 build) and modified to support the samsung puzzle-lock messaging notifications!
UPDATE 10/12/2010: added a smaller, faster version, with all images optimized, cut the file-size almost in half. New version is "Optimized_CM_5_0_8_with_puzzle_Mms.apk" though I'm leaving the original file attached to the post for anyone that wants to test both files.
For anyone that's never used an AOSP/CM android rom, you can see screenshots of the app here:
http://picasaweb.google.com/113127051130934911253/AndroidCM508MMS?feat=directlink
If you already use an AOSP/CM mms.apk, this can be pushed right on top of your existing apk.
To install if you still use the touchwiz mms apk, either use adb/terminal/root explorer to delete your existing mms.apk from /system/app then reboot, and uninstall "com.android.mms" then reboot into recovery, and clear cache and dalvik-cache.
Reboot one last time, rename this apk Mms.apk, and adb push to /system/app
Cheers everyone, and thanks again to untermensch for making this possible!
Awesome thanks for sharing your findings! Just pushed it to Bionix 1.7 and MMS seems to still work and have the puzzle piece. After getting so used to that puzzle piece I go nuts without it haha.
Thanks! Works great
Very cool thanks Man.
Updated the OP with a smaller, faster version with all images optimized, cuts the file-size almost in half.
Cheers everyone, =)
has this been tested with a stock 2.2 Mms.apk?
tyty! just pushed it to frankin-twiz. made it the perfect ROM.

Hi,
I posted a link in the OP to some screenshots. The biggest thing for me, is that instead of making delivery reports a notification that has to be cleared after every sms/mms, it shows an icon, in-line with the message text, that changes based on status (pending, delivered, error, etc.)
Also, this does not use the "chat bubbles" like the touchwiz mms app. Personally, I don't really care for them in the touchwiz mms, since it truncates long messages, forcing you to click each message to view the full text.
Anyway, hope this helps, cheers, =)
I followed you installation instructions but did not see the app named com.android.mms after deleting mms.apk and rebooting i didnt see it in titanium or the stock app manager...now i pushed the file but it wont show up after restarting 3 times? Hi,
I've never run into that before, everytime you remove/delete an apk from /system/app it should leave residual data. Granted, this is from a terminal/shell approach, I don't personally use titanium, root explorer, etc. but do almost everything from an adb shell.
The only thing I can suggest is try deleting the mms.apk again manually, from a shell, and reboot and then go to /settings/applications/manage applications and hit menu, change filter to all, and then search for anything that looks like com.android.mms
Sorry about that, not sure why its not working for you, do you run a custom rom?
cheers, =)

I know I posted this to Viral when he made the mods to the Mms.apk back in Bionix 1.7ish to get it black, but it never got fixed. The background color of MMS content (easily seen when adding audio) is still a light blue. Think you can change it to black to match?
Thanks for this. I tried following the instructions but it didn't cooperate. My mms.apk was still there after reboot. So I just replaced it with the new one using root explorer. Seems to work without a problem. Running Fusion 1.0

On the first post of the Bionix-V 2.2 thread, they posted an add-on .ZIP file named "AOSP mms"
download it, boot into recovery, and install it from sd card
won't show your texts in call log after that (will still display that you texted someone prior to installing it though, just clear the entire log to start fresh)

aosp (android open source project) mms is basically the original native version of messaging app. you probably are familiar with touchwiz mms app developed by samsung which shows messages in balloons. aosp has different ui and messages are threaded. until team whiskey completely fixed bugs in the touchwiz mms app included in nero or bionix roms, people used aosp mms app to avoid issues sending pic msgs. some ppl like it better, some don't. whether or not you will like it is entirely your preference.
btw in bionix-v 1.2 when you go into call logs you will not see sent/rec'd msgs initially unless you press menu h/w button, view by and select all logs.
running froyo.ec05 on Samsung's Epic. Downloaded aosp mms via link above, moved to SD, saved as "update.zip", booted from recovery, and apply sdcard: update.zip. Received error message, signature verification failed, installation aborted. Any specific advice for installing this file would be appreciated.
Id like to first say thanks to Rangerbry, for his port of this for the Photon. This is his work, all I did was swap out some images,to suit my taste on my device, and wanted to share them.I use this with a stock rooted 198_7 build. If you're running an odexed build, you'll have to change the file extension of the SystemUI.odex file ,from .odex to .abk for it to take.I also swapped out the stock data icons for those from the DX,as those look a whole lot better in MHO.

Kenneths base, the aosp sliders were a morph i picked up from droidpirate,LiGux battery, signal, and data icons. The notification toggles are from and themed like n the ones in Liberty rom.The only problems, are the gps icon is distorted when its acquiring, and the "notification" bar is still ginger blue. This BlurPlus zip, undoes the Alien theme. For anyone wondering, these are based on 198_7 stock, rooted and unlocked.
The Blur Plus zip is a little combo including the first set of toggles.I replaced the saw blade spinners with GB ones colored accordingly, used ICS emotion icons, changed the default wallpaper.
I tried to flash liberty with bootstrap on jokers 4g ROM and ot didnt take. The file flashed just fine, no errors or anything, the toggles just dont show. Just an FYI to others who may try.
use root explorer and rename the SystemUI.odex to SystemUI.abk, and reboot. itll take.

First three work great on Stock 198_6. (Using the bootstrap CWM and then renaming the systemui.odex to .bak and rebooting, wiping dalvik).
However, the fourth package (Blur Plus) does not seem to work on stock rooted, locked 198_6. Luckiy I nandroid backed up prior to flashing as it caused numerous FC's on just about any auto launch program. Background was nice, but did not work. For anyone wondering.......
Funny enough, thats what led to me unlocking my bootloader, but i didnt have a backup so i had to sbf first.Idk why it would FC.Im on 198_7,and theres no difference between the two that I can see other than the known compatibility issue with some market apps.Did you flash any other theme components with it?If I use RomToolbox to change my battery or signal icons, sometimes itll do the same thing that youre describing, and then ill have to restore a backup.

I ended up just using the Liberty package. After the first meltdown with the plus package, I started looking at file sizes of your packages and noticed that the plus package was 5x larger than any other you offer. So that rung a bell to me that much more is being done with that one. As my ultimate goal was just to get the notification toggles, I went with a smaller one.
As I am on a stock rooted, Locked bootloader with bootstrap recovery, I want to be as minimal as possible. I read a couple other threads with similar toggles and was seeing confirmations that people were getting these to work on 198_6, locked. So I gave it another shot after restoring my nandroid from bootstrap. Second go round with a smaller package was successful (Also wiping Dalvik after flashing). I did have to manually rename the Systemui from odex to bak and reboot. Once rebooted, I had the ICS themed toggles and a nice pretty new 3G icon on my notification bar.
Outside of that, it has been smooth. No FC's or issues after flashing the smaller package.
I would have to assume the issues you are having with romtool box are linked to ROMS either being odex or deodex'd. If its a stock rom, you will more than likely have issues trying to theme things as the structure for which it works normally relies on deodex'd packages. Stock is normally odex. (Correct me if I'm wrong)
Yeah, the reason for the size difference, is because i havent exactly gotten in the habit of making an update zip with just the images.everything i uploaded are the complete systemUIs that i made and flashed on my phone.i use root explorer for all the grunt work and just keep extracted copies of all of my system ui and framework-res im separate folder for easy modifying. Then i zip it up with root explorer and sign it with zip zigner. With RomToolbox,it usually happens if i try to install one theme over another.i just use icon changer part as an icon repository. Download them, then move them around on my sd card.

What this does
Removes bloat, especially from HTC and Verizon. The full list is at https://github.com/muness/Rezound-DeSense/blob/master/apks_to_remove.txt . That includes all the APKs Scott Crosler removed in CleanROM Developer Edition 1.0 and everything listed in Quantumrabbit's safe to delete and safe to delete so long as other apps/services that use it also are lists and also all the APKs I identified as Sense 4.0 or bloat in Team PkmN - Venasaur Rom v3.2.0. The full list of APKs it removes is at https://github.com/muness/Rezound-DeSense/blob/master/apks_to_remove.txt
Install AOSP APKs for Browser, Calendar, Calculator, Email (see stock_apks directory)
Reboots the phone before FCs kick in
Has no options whatsover. Just run it. If you want to customize it, after download/extract, edit apks_to_remove.txt and desense.sh on Mac and Linux or desense.bat on Windows.
Before running this script
Make a Nandroid backup
Install the Sense ROM of your choice (I jump around between BAMF, CleanROM and RezROM)
Install a launcher and keyboard of your choice (I like Nova and SwiftKey X)
Connect the device to USB
If you have not done any of these steps do not use this script!
Using this script
Windows
Do the steps listed above (Before running this script)
Download the .zip file https://github.com/muness/Rezound-DeSense/zipball/v4
Expand it
Run desense.bat
Mac/Linux
Do the steps listed above (Before running this script)
Get adb working on your machine. If you need help, see http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/wiki/Howto:_Install_the_Android_SDK.
Download the .zip file https://github.com/muness/Rezound-DeSense/zipball/v4

Known issues
You don’t get AOSP status bar
You don’t get AOSP dialogs
You don’t get AOSP dialer or Phone or People app
You need to wipe data from the Google Play Store app
There’s still some HTC Sense stuff here. e.g. Phone, People, Camera, Gallery, Personalize setting.
You get whatever bugs the ROM you start with has.
Requires that the ROM you're using has a boot.img which specifies ro.secure=0 in default.prop file. This gives adb connection root privileges.
Changelog
2012/03/21 - V1 - first release
2012/04/04 - V2 - remove some more APKs that are not needed post-setup. Keep around WorldClock.apk as some report that removing it causes issues.
2012/05/15 - V3 - added Sense 4.0 APKs to remove. Still works with Sense 3.6, just has errors when it tries to remove APKs that aren't there.
2012/06/12 - V4 - Fix a bug which broke PC SD card mounting. Also some cleanup.

For CleanROM, I suggest using CleanROM Developer Edition. It's pretty much this, but you get Scott's support!
I too would love to have the ICS dialer. I have no idea how to get that to work though. I tried the naive approach, replacing HtcDialer, HtcContacts, ContactsProvider and Phone APKs and I get FCs on boot up that make the phone unusable. If any one can point me in the right direction, I'd be happy to delve deeper.
Ok so I ran this on RezROM and phone won't boot.
Comes up to boot screen, does that and automatically shuts off.
Any ideas?

Sorry, I only tried 3.1. Are you on RezROM 3.2?

Yes.

Hi, thanks a lot for the tool, it's very helpful. I just used it on RezROM ICS 3.2 and worked perfectly.

Marino, can you describe what you did? Since clemson91 had no problems with RezROM 3.2 I can't diagnose without more input into what you did or how it stopped booting for you.

I already had Go Launcher and swiftx running and set as defaults, that might of helped. Thanks again
I did forget to install a keyboard but had a launcher, could simply forgetting the keyboard cause all this?

I'll try once more properly when I flash RezRom 3.3 tonight.

I was able to flash RezROM 3.3 (the battery tweaks intrigued me) this morning, flash TitaniumBackup, booted up, skipped all the setup stuff, restored my apps with TitaniumBackup, set NovaLauncher as the default launcher and SwiftKey X as the default keyboard, and then ran the script from Windows and it is worked fine.
How did it go for you?

Still didn't work.
I don't get it, I had Apex and another keyboard this time.
The script says all sorts of things I don't understand like adb server out of date, killing daemon, it tries to run it but nothing successfully.

Are you running it on Windows? I'll add a way to capture the output.
I'm running on Windows XP.

Make sure that USB debugging is on, and that the HTC sync isn't active on your computer. HTC sync had messed up other desensing tools for me before.
