I'm planning to modify my Archos 101. Got this this website about the rooting process. Before I go to rooting, I want you guys to know my plans to mod my Archos 101, is to have much higher clock speed, not like the stock speed, also no limitations on installing App. Now I updated my OS to 2.1.04. I have no SDcard but mine has a 8GB Internal mem.
I found this forums, and I dont know where to start? Can you guys guide me to the right directions.

If this is the only thing you can say and you cant give me some support please don't reply.
Yes i know the hardware is difference but maybe there is a person who can help me with finding the right place.

Why would you want to root your device if you don't even know what the benefits or drawbacks of rooting it are?!? Are you so desperate for root that you are ready to void your warranty or install a possible trojan?? I suggest you get familiar with the capabilities of your device before trying to "mod" it in any way. Maybe it will suffice for you without the need to root. If not, you should read all you can on the subject before asking for help, there's a lot of information on the subject already. Someone who needs their hand held shouldn't be attempting to root the Archos.

Do we have freedom of choice here...? The reason why I want to root my device, I already read "some" of the benifits... The only thing I need is to make it faster or some sort... Some can run 1200mhz, or 1280mhz. Mine is only running 800-1000mhz. Some has custom desktop... mine is only plain stock, some can install a lot Apps by increasing ROM. Do you understand what I'm trying to express... I'm just asking for help... I'll be not blaming you and other pips... I only need is guidance and just simple tweaks.... Thats all... Please help are In need... Warranty? I thought you can bring it back to the original? and it will not brick, right? So please XDAdevelopers pimp my Archos....!

I have confirm the above thread is very easy to temporary root or permanent root (without CPU speed up). I have recommend you to read this thread first.
2. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=895599
This thread look like difficult for new user and must have some knowledge about linux command.
3. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=897877
This thread very easy to temporary root and you can use SETCPU to speed up CPU. I love this thread but it not ability to permanent root.
Note: I had decided to root my device by myself and I don't mind about warranty

Hey guys, I have a thunderbolt and would like to learn how to root, flash, all that good stuff.
Problem is, I don't know much about this stuff. I looked around, but couldn't find a link or a thread that was like an educational tool. If anyone knows where it is, it'd be much appreciated. Or if someone could let me know the basics, that's be good to.
I know I have to root the phone first, but I'm not sure how to save my contacts and past information(old texts). Also, I'll be rooting from a macbook.
Thanks in advance.
Why hello there Ryan!
There are several methods available to you, as well as several guides, most of which can be found here
In particular, you'll find a great guide to rooting on Mac osx here
GL and HF! And make sure you read ALL OF THE INSTRUCTIONS before you start. Links may die, and if you're 1/2 way through rooting it won't be good

+1, that's the stuff just remember to post any questions you may have in the Q&A section and not the development one! Happy hacking!

Welcome,
For rooting I used the "[ROOT] MR1/OTA PermRoot + Unlock Bootloader - Safer/Easier 5/12/2011" method by jcase. Once I got ADB set up on Windows it could not have been easier. Just take your time, follow the directions to a tee, and all should be well.
Since rooting I have spent a lot of time trolling these forums, using the search function ;- ) to find the information that I need, and more or less hacking on my Thunderbolt the my great delight and my wife's displeasure.
Have fun and enjoy.
Hey guys! I got my atrix 4g around the end of may and i haven't regretted switching from iphone since! . How did you learn when you had your iPhone? In most cases most people will search and read this forum time after time and then they fig, it out. So my advice is to read and search before you want to start asking questions im sure somewhere on this thread there is the anwser you are looking for. If you cant find what your looking then you need to find someone in the dev. forum and be nice and they might will help you. There is alot of really good devs out there that are willing to help you. I am a noob too that came from iphone

Yup, read a lot, search a lot, and you will have to try a lot. If you follow instructions, most of the time everything will go fine, but if it doesn't, you also need to look for the answers you will need to get back on track. You will get frustrated a lot, but the best way to learn anything is to try things yourself, and learn by your mistakes.
There are plenty of resources outside of XDA to learn about Android. There are some very good guides in the Atrix forums here also which will help you. Don't expect the devs to teach you programming. You will have to learn that yourself, but the devs will help you when you get stuck...........if, as was said, you treat them nicely!
Remember to post in the correct forums also. You will bring down the fires of hell on you if you post questions in the dev forum, themes in the general forum, etc.
lol thank you both, if its not too much can i run a scenario by you?
you may well know that gingerbread is comming to atrix [:{D>]

1) HKTW is a Chinese version of ginergbread more or less (i.e. Hong Kong Tai Wan), that happens to be usable on a U.S. AT&T Atrix w/ a unlocked boot loader. It's pretty buggy, since it wasn't specially designed for our device or carrier.
2, 3 & 4) To return to stock, which you will have to do if you flash any ROM before being able to OTA (Over The Air) update, you have to flash (a nice word for install) a fresh sbf. A sbf file is a original source file from Motorola that upon installing (i.e. flashing) will return your device back to stock, more or less. For instance, if you were to flash the 1.26 sbf onto your phone, it would exactly like the way you got it from the store; everything back to "normal" and stock. So before you do this you make a backup of your stuff, preferably on a external sd card. That way if you have to flash a sbf file and return to stock for what ever reason, you can re-install your stuff with minimal effort. Here is a good guide for flashing a sbf, explaining what you need and what to do:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=991072
and here is another for all the sbf files currently:

I'm sure you have more questions, so ask always, and I'll try to help when & where I can.
Ok, so I'm assuming you are running a U.S. AT&T Atrix??
So the first thing you are probably going to want to do is get Root access (like getting a jail break on iphone, more or less):
- If your on 4.1.83 firmware (the most current). You can check by going to setting -> About Phone -> System Version. You will need to use Gingerbreak to Root your phone. This will most likely wipe your phone, so save what you can on your pc, ext. sd card, etc.
Instructions here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1046626
And Crap, my wife called and whats to grab a bite to eat... start there, and I'll edit and add to the post later.

Hi guys,
Im really new to android and linux, yet i want to install ubuntu on my device.
I got it as a gift and would like to make it a netbook like.
Anyway, as far as i know i have the latest JB bootloader, unlocked, also i have the hairybean rom, and OCed to 1.7Ghz, I also have TWRP recovery...
Now, i saw this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1603921k i understood that it installs ubuntu on my device completely, without any need of VNC.
Yet the thread is a bit outdated i guess, from reading a bit i ubderstood that the sound has been fixed, and they had worked on a whole new kernel to fix everything up...
Now, can please somebody guide me, and give me the newest files (kernel and OS)?
Thanks alot and sorry for being such a noob!!
PS any way to install the OS directly on the SSD, and not on an external SD, also, anyway to remove android (if ubuntu is stable enough?)
Come on people, 90 views and no replies?
100 views and no replies?
Can someone atleast put this thread in the Ubuntu installation how-to, so people can refer to this thread and help me?

Dude you seriously need to chill out. Ubuntu is not officially running yet, It is only out on the Nexus devices and their kernels, file systems, boot loaders, etc... are apples to oranges compared to the prime. It is still in heavy development in trying to make it so it actually runs smooth and dual boots android. The developers in the Ubuntu thread have been busting their ass to make it happen and there are multiple developers working together to get to happen. There are still a whole bunch of bugs that need to be worked out. I have been following the thread from day 1 so you can do the same here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1603921. By saying you are new to linux/ubuntu then I would sit back for a bit and follow the tread before you brick your tablet. Things seem like they are going very well in the thread so sit back and read 60+ pages of posts to catch up and have a coke and a smile.
