[Fixed] Fix Permissions (With Rom Manager and Without) - Fascinate Android Development

Make no mistake, I do not condone the use of Rom Manager due to our neglect.
Still, it has its purposes. I have fixed the "Fix Permissions" function. Do NOT install the market version!
Install this one instead. It may not work with Rom Manager Premium license. (I can live with that).
This has only been tested with superclean.
RomManager.apk
Fr just the script (run via adb shell or terminal emulator)
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2056318/update-template/fxpms.zip
Install via clockwork, then run fxpms. Requires superuser permissions.

Ok stpiid question. Do I have to do all of this or just install the apk?

Either or, but not both. That would be silly.

That's what I thought. Thanks. And this will work in cwm also?

Thanks, does this include the battstat fix as well?

Can't get the apk to install.

Other forums show that you need to uninstall the market ROM Manager before installing this one. That's how I did, uninstall, then install through root explorer or super manager.

Thanks man works!

Worked like a charm, installed through astro. Great work as always adrynalyne.

when do you sleep man your a beast! thanks a ton!

Had to uninstall the liscence. Duh

What was wrong with it to begin with? I just ran it on my phone about an hour before seeing this post. Did it not do what it's supposed to do?

Anyone running Froyo had issues with it. It would run in 1 second which obviously is too fast. It was not fixing any permissions. Just acting like it was.

Will it still not work in clockworkmod? I flashed the zip and still couldn't run it. Runs in Rom manager t though

Sorry for being ignorant, but exactly what permissions is the permissions fix supposed to fix, and why would I need to apply such a fix?
Edit: Nevermind, was having a hard time finding this answer on Google, but I finally found it. Looks like it just simply reapplies all proper permissions to system app files to fix FC errors and such, presumably in the event that you are messing with the system files and the permissions get messed up on them. I'm guessing I'll never need this function unless I start manually changing system files around or something.

Doubtful, seeing as it's kind of hard to change permissions on something you've deleted.

Wouldn't deleting any system file like that affect the permissions on other apps, making it necessary to fix the permissions every time? Besides, the system rebuilds batterystats.bin from scratch immediately after it's been deleted.
Another Fascinating post by my XDA App

How on earth would deleting one file affect permissions on other files? That just doesn't happen. As for the file getting recreated, the OS should be smart enough to set the correct permissions on it.
The only time I can see this being necessary is if things don't work right after installing a new rom, or if you manually change apks or other system files. I've messed around with system files before, and never once had to fix any permissions, probably because I always took care to set the correct permissions manually when doing so.

Still won't work. There are 2 other files that I know of that make swype associated to the ROM as a system app (and preventing an installation). I removed those as well (so I removed a total of 4 swype-related files from the android system) and it still couldn't install.
If you or someone else has successfully managed to install swype from swype.com on a swype-enabled ROM, you should write steps on how to do it.

When I remove an app I use Titanium Backup Pro to wipe the data before I uninstall it
Sent from my XDA app cuz I'm stalking your mom....
Figured it out from another topic. Swype can be installed PROPERLY now. Working great too. Here are the instructions. Just follow them exactly and you're set.
1.Remove libswypeCore from system/lib
2.Remove ANY files that have the word "Swype" in their name from system/app. There should be 2. One is swype.apk, the other is swypetips.apk or something like it.
3.Reboot into recovery, clear dalvik cache.
4.From TitaniumBackup, verify that you can't find swype anywhere in the installed apps. Make sure the option to show system apps is on. If you DO find anywhere swype, uninstall it.
5.Reboot your phone. It will take a WHILE, can be up to 10 minutes, that is normal.
6.Install new swype.
NOTE: To access system/lib and system/app you will need a root-based file manager such as Root Explorer. Root Explorer can be found on the market and is very useful all around.

Ugh I tried just now.
I couldn't find any apk or libswype but I deleted the libswypecore.so
And there is no API because I deleted it before...
I wiped the dalvik cache or something and it took lIke 5 minutes to bootup and when I try to install it says problem parsing cache.
Can someone with new swype give me their apk? I'm sure if I put that in system/app it'd work.
Also what is dalvik cache?
Someone please help. I'm bored of using the android keyboard
I can give you the old version as well as the new version. But from what it sounds, you didn't clean the swype files completely.
I'll update the steps for removing swype. I realized one or two of them are unclear. I'm also attaching the NEWEST swype I just installed in this post. Note that you need to push that into data/app, NOT in system. Also, you need to have cleared the old swype as my system/app and system/lib had NO files associated with swype.

thanks, i installed that everything worked but the language, and the whole point of swype, swyping.
i turned it on and it gave me a message saying the language pack is incompatible with my phone or something, i clicked ok, now when i swype, i get nothing, i can type normally but no swype.
also on swype settings it the language option is like grey so i can't click it...
EDIT:
nevermind, i got it to work.
for people with same problems, install the attachment from the post on page 1, last post.
normally install no need to put it on system/apps or anything
Now use your normal swype installer from www.beta.swype.com and it will tell you that your swype is unlicensed, it'll guide you on disabling swype, and it will generate a license (you need to make a login at swype.com) and then the language pack and everything is fully installed.
thanks for the attachment, couldn't have done anythign without it!

[HC EMMC] Working Market & Gapps

I want to share the versions of the Market and various Gapps that work for me on Sam's HC EMMC v4.0, 2nd ed. build {Huge props to him, deeper-blue, and others who got HC working on the NC. Without their heroic efforts, I'd be working 4 jobs right now trying to save up to buy a Xoom}
This script is the first one I run after doing a fresh build of HC EMMC, but you should also be able to do it on a stale version of HC as well.
Maps is version 5.0
While I am confident that these files will work for you as well, please remember, individual results may vary---use at your own discretion.
NOTE: The 'GoogleServicesFramework.apk' file in the attached .zip will remove the blue wi-fi icon from Sam's initial build. If you prefer the blue icon over a working Market (My Apps), then DO NOT proceed with the installation!
That being said, please do the following before trudging ahead:
+ Perform a full backup using your bootable CWR SD card [see samuelhalff's thread for instructions on this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=947071]
+ Backup each of the original files on your NC that will be replaced by the script
+ See #1 & #2 above...you've been warned
Instructions for Installation:
Extract the files contained within the attached .zip into the same directory as your ADB directory (where your 'adb.exe' file lives). Mine was located here on my computer: C:\android-sdk-windows\platform-tools
Connect your NC to your computer, ensuring ADB is working properly ahead of time
Double-click on the file 'HoneyGAppInstall.cmd' and the script to install the new apps will run
The script will reboot your NC upon completion
Once your NC comes backup from the reboot, you can then login to the Market, select "My Apps" and they should show up right away.
I have also attached the 'build.prop' file I use. This modified file allows me to see tablet apps (NY Times Tablet, More Good News Tablet) and also I can see/download/install both Angry Birds games.
NOTE: The ro.sf.lcd_density is set to 140 in my file. This is not friendly to Zeam and needs to be set to at least 150 for that launcher to work without Force Closing in Portrait mode.
Good luck and let me know if any issues.
EDIT: For those running a build that is not new and already has the original Market setup, would be best to do the following steps after running the Gapps script:
1.) Settings > Manage Applications > All > Market: Clear Cache then Force Stop -- DO NOT Clear Data2.) Settings > Manage Applications > All > Google Services Framework: Clear Data3.) Reboot

Would it be possible to flash the market zip through recovery? Looks like it would work in theory.

Not being a dev, I don't know how to compile the files I attached and make them flashable.
However, I can tell you that I do have a black-themed Market by Darkslide for my DroidX that is flashable via CWR, but sadly, it did not work for me. I tried it by booting to the CWR SD card. Would have been nice to have the black-themed version.
I also have a flashable version of Zeam, but again, did not work for me.
Now, I have not tried it by going into CWR using Sam's method with his built-in utility. This is because I have not really been able to get that to work 100% of the time and also because it is just so easy to get to CWR via the bootable SD card that I have not really messed with it too much.
I can post the black-themed Market if someone smarter than me wants to take a look at it...might prove useful. I am just not sure if a DX file can be used on the NC
Just let me know and maybe we can figure it out together.

And you have to be pretty fast at disabling that little "HQ" icon in the top-right corner of the screen. From my experience, has to be almost instantaneous by the time it appears on the screen or the video won't load.

Thanks for checking. I did mess around with the build.prop you provided. I think I messed something up. I will use the file you provided without any changes.
Thanks.
Not being dev minded, I don't know how much help I would be. I was able to extract the apks from the zip file and move them with root explorer, changed permissions and it appears to be holding. Have rebooted twice and still good. Your script in the zip file would not work with cwr since it is windows based, I think. I don't know if the apks would install in recovery without a script, seems like it would not. Anyway, thanks for putting this together. Market works with the apks and the build. prop seems to have helped as well. Thanks again.

You are most welcome and yes, the .zip is not flashable for CWR. XDA will only allow for certain types of files to be uploaded and .zip is one of them, so easier for me to go that route.
Files in the .zip are meant to be extracted into the folder where ADB.exe exists in order for the script to work correctly. As stated in the OP, I have only tested this on a Win7 box, as that is the only platform I have access to at the moment.
Root Explorer will also work, as you already know. So, for those who want to go that route, it is certainly an option. Glad things are working well for you at this point. Thanks for your feedback!

2.3, not 3.0.
Just transferred all the apps and the build.prop to a stale build of eMMC 2nd (3 days of use) and other than using root explorer followed the instructions to a T. My apps seemed to work but not thinking I updated maps in the market and now it doesnt work. Tried to uninstall updates in market (didnt seem to even finish the process), replace with my original apk, replace with apk from your zip here, clearing cache and data. Nothing seems to bring it back to life. Anyone else have this problem?
P.S. I think the white wifi icon looks nice.

Glad all is working for you and that is a good point...I will update the OP to let folks know the build.prop has the LCD Density set at 160, which is not Zeam portrait-mode friendly.
Thanks for the feedback!
Okay, just downloaded the new Amazon Appstore and installed Angry Birds Rio (the first Free App of the Day). Force Close... so I tried both 140 and 160 LCD Densities and still no luck. Tried both of the other Angry Birds (original & seasons) and they force close on all three densities as well.
Any thoughts on why you are able to run them but I can't using the same build.prop? The only thing I had changed from your build.prop was the LCD density, but as I said, even changing it back to match your original setting doesn't make Angry Birds work.
Angry Birds and Angry Birds Seasons work for me. I had to move them to the internal memory. I already tried moving Rio to internal memory, however it still FC's. I can get the game to almost start, but when it's time to start shooting, it FC's. I haven't tried changing the LCD density.
Same issue here with Rio. Tried internal and no dice. Doesn't run at all when on SD.

[Q] Looking for "Alarms and Timer"

ok, hopefully someone can help me. I recently flashed sbf and installed Kenneth's GreyBlur. Love it and it works great, except somewhere in the middle of that process i lost my "alarms and timer" app that was built in. Not sure if it was taken out because there is an alarm built into the "clock" but i do not really like that alarm because it wont let me select a different alarm thats not built into the phone. it almost gave me a heart attack this morning.
anyway, if there is a way to get this back or a zip or apk i can install that would be great.

im new to android so of course im stumped on what to do next
thanks for your help btw. im wondering if its the greyblur?
Well if your only complaint is that your missing the alarm clock maybe you will like one from the market just as much or more.? I use http://goo.gl/LTd3z, you can configure it to ask you math questions on alarm. The link is to the free version and there is a premium version in the market, as well as a bunch of other free/paid alarm clocks.
if you put an mp3 into the media folder you can use that as your alarm tone

ive researched similar issues online and see people have had this issue but the threads i found no one ever seems to say if they got it resolved or not. some people are saying its not rooted but my other rooted apps work fine.

[NEEDED] TEMPORARY Bloat disable/uninstall or else Perm Uninstall+Reinstall

From what I've seen (e.g., Bloatware Disabler and ViperMod), the bloatware zappers out there are all permanent and thus survive a reboot (unlike the root itself).
I'm one of many that wants the option of a one-click root that is totally temporary but does everything you'd want (overclock, Hulu fix, etc). The missing piece of the puzzle here is a temporary bloat disabler or uninstaller.
Does this kind of mod exist? If so I'd be happy to incorporate it into my existing one-click roots.
I'm guessing that if the changes are non-permanent (i.e., are undone at reboot) then the best we can do is FREEZE and not uninstall the apps, right?
If that's true, I propose two roots: Root 1 strips out all the bloatware, overclocks, roots, etc etc (all the good stuff ). If you want to return to stock, Root 2 will reroot, REINSTALL THE DELETED APPS, then reboot so that you're back to stock in terms of system files.
Going either direction on this will, I think, be a step in the right direction.
(PS: I apologize for my noobishness; however, I've been creating some helpful tools for people recently and I think this is the next step, but some overall guidance first would really help! Please consider my earnestness before flaming! )
THANKS IN ADVANCE
The way pm disable works on apps and packages is permanent. You can do pm uninstall com.htc.taskiller (for example) and it should work, I have never tried it. Im 100% sure it will come back on a reboot, though. With vMBM, you can just enable everything from the Advanced menu in a few seconds. Were you aware of that?
I really like where your headed with this. I did manage to delete a single file and did an install of swype and it seems to be the only thing that sticks after reboot. Think it was the install file from oem.
has to be something to remove to prevent apps from reinstalling them selves.
Btw, after you ad this to your mod script when finished, can you throw in apfree install. Thanx in advanced.

So you're saying that Vipermod simply freezes the apps, and they can be re enabled easily from a menu? Do apps stay frozen Thu reboot?
I guess what I'm thinking here is that I want a root that 100% strips out bloated (so I guess uninstall) but which either does NOT persist Thu boot or else can be restored later with one click deeply (i tried to explain this in OP. If I understand vipermod correctly, I think that'd be the second best option (merely freezing apps). Of course, in the preceding I'm assuming that uninstalled is better than frozen, all things being equal.
What do you think?

Right--my assumption is that with temp root I could go in and delete a **** ton of system files and totally destroy my phone--right?? Basically, to reiterate, BECAUSE WE'RE IN THE WORLD OF TEMP ROOT ANYWAY, AND REQUIRE FREQUENT REROOT, IF I'M GOING TO FREQUENTLY REROOT I MIGHT AS WELL HAVE THE OPTION TO NOT ONLY STRIP OUT BLOATED BUT **ALSO** QUICKLY RETURN TO STOCK (FOR WARRANTY, SERVICE, ETC.) Can you offer some guidance?
As to Adfree, there's no need to add that. I only want my oneclick to do stuff you'd otherwise have to do manually after rooting. This isn't necessary with Adfree--after root just use the fast reboot app and address works fine, no? (or does it NOT work? Angry Birds seems to have LESS ads but isn't totally adfree--I've been assuming it was simply "beating" the adfree app.)

How about just freezing apps with titanium backup? It sticks with a reboot and only takes a single click per app to freeze/unfreeze.

Titanium freeze uses the pm disable. Pm disable will stick through reboot. If you want to not have a system app only til reboot, just delete in terminal or with root explorer. And I believe a data/factory reset wipe would restore frozen apps

Require frequent reroot... Sorry to hear that. Only happens to me if I let battery run completely out.
Return to stock... Can't you use RUU for that?
Adfree... I've had really mixed luck with.
AS For bloat, I use titanium backup. No problems on my end.

Correct, it uses the pm disable command on apps. It stays after a reboot but can be easily re-enabled after a reboot.
basically this guy wants a script similar to vipermod that "rm stupid.apk" from the /system/app directory instead of "pm disable" which is very very simple. that way upon reboot it all returns

So I guess I'm confused. If i temp root, then go into root explorer and delete all kinds of system files--they'll come back after reboot?
And yes, my root sticks til a true reboot, but not thereafter. Isn't that the case with everyone?

If you disable the app in titanium or thru adb then the .apk file still is on the phone..but NOT usable or loadable...if you uninstall the app then the file is off the phone...then if you do a reboot....the phone will reinstall the programs you deleted but the disabled apps stay disabled, invisible to the machine but the apk of that program is still on the machine..usually in /SYSTEM/APPS or /DATA/APPS. Ugly but it works like a charm. And from what I read...it is for everybody....hope this answers your question.

As said above yes they will come back. You have no write access to system. So although you think you are deleting them, you are not. You are only "deleting" them from cache. Disabling them, actually writes to an xml file in the data directory (which apps have access to). If you have fast boot turned on, you are not truly "rebooting" and that's why root stays.

[Q] Strange issue with root

Hi All,
i have an issue - i installed custom ROM, custom kernel, all is working except root.
I have two root apps - superuser (standard) and one from ROM supersu. One came with ROM, and i flashed another (standard) just after flash (not sure why really)
So - I have two supersusers - bot don't have root... irony
Any suggestion how to fix that? Also, how should i delete superuser (standard) from system/app folder (without root apparently)?
Thanks all!
"This app cannot be uninstalled if it was installed with your ROM or root. If there is no uninstall option, it's because you placed it in /system/app, not me. It is impossible for an app to be installed in /system/app by the Play store. In fact, the entire /system partition is read only at runtime. The only way for an app to be placed in /system/app is via a rooting process (which usually installs Superuser), or by remounting the system partition as read/write and manually putting it there."
this is from the play store page. I guess you could try using root explorer to delete it but don't know if it will work
The more important question is why don't you have root? You have two root apps installed on a custom ROM. You should be able to run SuperSU and let it update the su binary. Then you can use ROM Toolbox or TB to remove Superuser.

That is a strange problem. Never had that issue. Some custom come with supersu already installed and don't require you to install super user from the market. In fact it dont make sense to download standard unless you have standard from Rom and want to add supersu for better root access. Try to reflash Rom first and see if that works. Don't install standard. If that don't work try another Rom.

That's already been suggested in the ROM thread on another site, but he seems to be trying to get around it without reinstalling the ROM. He said over there that he doesn't know why he installed SuperUser since the ROM came with another su app and neither do I. He should just go ahead and reflash the ROM.
For some reason this guy seems to want to do things differently from standard practices and then ask for help when it doesn't work. His latest post in the other thread was asking if he could flash the ROM after removing the kernel (boot.img)!
I'm not sure where he comes up with these ideas but he seems to be off doing his own thing even though he is new at this stuff. I'm not suggesting that you don't help him, but wanted you to be aware that he may be creating problems for himself.

Thanks for the heads up. Your right, it don't make sense to try something different if what we suggest to somebody has been a better and usually a full proof way of fixing a problem. But like you said if he wants to add to his own problems that's on him. Let's make this clear to him too since he is new. Nobody on this site or other sites are responsible if you blow up your device, your gf leaves you, or you burn down your house and get fired. :highfive:
