Should Barnacle Wifi Tether work fine on the Atrix now that we have root?
It wont matter that att wants you to get there tethering plan?
Shouldn't be a problem.

This isn't exactly an answer to your question but they found a way to activate the native hotspot feature without rooting or adding a tethering plan. I included the link to the thread and the instructions found within it.

Once you verified internet is working, power off phone, then power on. Phone should still have active internet connection, if it does, you are done!
I prefer to use barnacle, because you can do MAC based filtering (default deny, with questions for allow every time). Has anybody tried Barnacle on the Atrix with root?

What is the benefit of using the native ATT tether feature over barnacle? It seems to me that ATT would be more likely to discover your use of tethering if you use their native client and access points.

Not to mention that I got faster speeds when using Barnacle than I did the blank AT&T APN - 4.26 Down / 0.33 Up using Barnacle - 2.70 Down / 0.29 Up on the APN tethering....
For those wondering how to get Barnacle since the stupid Android Market says "this item is not available for your carrier," a big F-U to AT&T on that one, just root your device and allow side loaded apps, then from your computer, go to:
http://szym.net/barnacle/
and download the direct link.... You'll have to manually update it though (if necessary, works great as is on the current 0.6.7 version), because even with using Appbrain, it shows up in the apps sync'd, but will not open the market app to update, when necessary.

I don't have my Atrix yet (get paid on Monday), but on my current Streak, there are 2 ways to get Barnacle: Settings->Wireless & Networks->Mobile Network Settings -- Uncheck "Data enabled", then turn on wifi and download from the market.
The other (unconfirmed) option is to just use the Android web market: market.android.com . Search for Barnacle, install it there. It worked on my phone, but I had it installed previously. I don't think AT&T can block those installations, but I am sure they would if they could, so YMMV.
Barnacle not working for me.
For some reason, Barnacle Wifi won't even let my computer connect to it. It says it's sending out the signal, and my laptop is trying to connect but it just won't. My other smart phone won't even find the signal B.Wifi is sending out. The only thing that seems to work is using the native hotspot after following the instructions listed above. Just curious if anyone else is having an issue?

Since the app doesn't need an update just yet, I can't confirm the first way you suggested. But I can definitely UNconfirm the second - that's where I got the text from that says it cannot be installed on our carrier. I almost always use the computer to search for apps as opposed to the actual Market app on the phone.
Was sitting in the passenger seat of a car going 80mph down the highway earlier and was getting a great connection with Barnacle the whole 3 hour trip. Love it, didn't even bother with the APN tether!
what kind of computer are you using. i have the Chrome CR-48 and it doesn't work because they can't connect to ADHOC networks. Tethering sets up an ADHOC network, not infrastructural like your Home Wireless Routers

An easy way to bypass the Market check is to download MarketEnabler from the market and temporarily change the settings to another carrier (e.g. I tried Telstra). This will allow you install Barnacle directly from the Market.
I also find that Barnacle works flawlessly. The Native Hotspot feature also works with no problem. I have found however that the native hotspot requires high speed or it will not even start. Barnacle on the other hand will work when still within the Edge network if need be.

Pretty cool, I'll have to try that, thanks for the suggestion!
Another satisfied Barnacle user here.
I am new to Android and when I got my Atrix the first thing I did was root it with SuperOneClick. I tried tethering it using the XDA's forum instructions for APN but couldn't get it to work. A friend of mine suggested Barnacle and I've been rolling ever since.
I was a little confused when my laptop showed the ad-hoc connection and symbol rather than a 'traditional' wifi network, but my connection is solid.
Now to wait on AT&T to do their thing and turn the psudo-4G switch on.

This works PERFECTLY.... Just used T-Mobile (a little closer to home than Telstra is in Australia ) and updated Barnacle - will be doing this for any other "issues" AT&T throws our way......
I was able to install Barnacle as well as PDANET by
***WARNING*** Make sure you know your Moblur login information before proceeding. It was the account you created when you first got your phone.
1) Turn off the phone.
2) Remove the AT&T SIM card
3) Turn the phone back on(It will make you login to your Moblur account again)
4) Connect to your WIFI
5) Install Barnacle and PDANET from the Android store.
6) Turn off the Atrix
7) Re-install your SIM chip
8) Enjoy the applications
I have found that this will work with alot of apps that you cant DL from the store because of AT&T's policy's.

Bought my atrix at radioshack and then rooted it and took it to the att store to see if i could use the webtop with wifi tether or by adding an apn. Didnt work. Wondering if someone can make a program like 3gunrestrictor to trick the atrix its connected to its own wifi connection somehow. Any thoughts?
I second this.
Sent from my Motorola Atrix 4g XDA app.
I was able to get it to work somehow.
Here is what i did:
1) Created the custom APN for free tethering as described here.
2) Under APN type i put the following: default, dun, tether
3) i made sure my wifi hostspot is working properly (to make sure i setup the APN correctly). Once confirmed i shut down the hotspot app.
4) connected the HD media dock and launched webtop - it tried to verify the connection and kinda got stuck there.
5) i then changed the APN from the one i created to a built in one called "AT&T US Tether". at that point Webtop got access to the internet somehow (an no i don't have a tethering plan, i have an grandfathered unlimited data plan).
6) I immediately switched back to my custom APN after i saw webtop passed the connection authorization stage and voila...it is online via 3G/4G. I know for sure that the webtop is connecting through the custom APN and somehow - it works.

+1 on this behavior...
Although I did not switch back to the custom APN, nor did I specify the APN type. I did go to the ATT website to check my existing plan and still shows unlimited data...
glad to hear you guys got it to work (haven't been able to get that method to work for tethering myself, can't change the MMS Protocol). ok, my dock arrives this weekend, one other question. can ATT tell if I'm going this (using custom APN) to enable tether for the laptop dock? I'm sure I'm not the only one who doesn't want to lose their unlimited data plan. I asked this question once already and so have a couple others buy have not seen a response.
I'd still rather have some sort of ios like app that tricks the phone into thinking its on wifi, but guess that's not possible.
AWESOME
Thank you so much! I also did not have to switch back to the ATT US network, just left it on the custom one described above and it worked beautifully... WITHOUT changing MMS Protocol because it doesn't even show up on my phone.
my account still says I've used 5932.13 MB of Unlimited.
also, I turned on mobile hotspot, and I'm able to share my phone's connection via wifi to my Mac, WHILE using webtop firefox browser on my Atrix Laptop dock... BEAUTIFUL.
thanks again!
glad its working for you guys, i'm still very anxious about att noticing this somehow.
Does changing this affect anything else when just using the phone? if I can the laptop dock working without changing anyway from my tethering plan I think I am sold. Can you post a couple ss of what your pan settings screens look like? Do you have to change back to the regular one to use the phone?
Hello all I am paying for a wireless tethering plan yet the mobile hotspot seems to time out every 12 seconds. It will lode a web site usually half way before my data just drops to 0 kb/s and I have about 4 bars of lte. I don't know if there is a way to fix this, I have tried turning it on and off and rebooting but nothing seems to help this issue. When it stops responding to my computer the device name changes to a * and then it will not send data anymore. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks
I'm running into the same problem as well. I can tether through USB just fine but whenever I use the mobile hotspot my internet starts to timeout. I'll be lucky if I can go 5 minutes without it timing out.
Are either of you using Tasker? I had a very similar problem where I was using Tasker to determine when I was home by toggling Wifi to check for my home network and then setting sound profiles. I found that tasker would toggle the wifi which caused my wifi tether to stop working. It would look like it was on, but wouldn't send data. I fixed it by having tasker stop toggling wifi when running my wifi tether app..
Any smart action profiles set? Turn it off & see if it continues.

Mmh, I've got the EU RAZR (don't have to pay to route my connection where I want) and the Wireless Tethering is working flawlessly (HSPA+).
Maybe they haven't used the same software OR they've used the same software but there's a problem when LTE is ON.
Anyway, the EU RAZR is about to get an OTA...and VZW one should as well.

Setting the data connection to 3G didn't help. It took a little bit longer to time out this time but it still happened.
So I kind of figured out why I'm getting timed out, but I'm no closer to a solution.
When I tether through USB, 4G will stay connected. Nothing wrong with it.
When I tether through WiFI, I time out because the 4G connection drops after a few seconds and when 4G is re-established. The 4G connection does not have data, even though it says 4G. I cannot access data on my phone or on any tethered device.
When I turn off the mobile hotspot, then my 4G will drop again and when 4G is re-established, then data starts to work again.
edit:
Maybe I have a faulty phone. I'm going to try to exchange it this weekend.

I have similar problem connecting a Kindle Fire to a Verizon provisioned hotspot. Web browsing doesnt work but music, videos, apps, and books seem to work. I haven't had a chance to check but on the Thunderbolt we had a similar issue and it turned it to be bad dns server for the wifi connected devices.
I don't have the ability to set a custom DNS server on the Fire so I can't check this at the moment. I'll report back when I can verify if this is the issue with a laptop.
I have a EU razr and I also have problems with Wifi tether - my computer can connect fine but I get "limited connectivity" and no Internet access. Worked without issue on SE Arc with same provider and APN settings.
What other Hotspot apps are out there that hopefully work better?
Same issue.
From what I have been reading on other forums this is a known issue that Motorola is working on and the ETA for the fix is no more than two weeks. We'll see.
This seems to work
I tried the steps below and haven't had a drop in the last 15 minutes. I'm not a network guy so I don't know the reasoning behind why this worked for me, but so far so good. If you're not comfortable messing with the Registry, then don't try this. I used a spare PC to test it first.
Change the Default Maximum Transmission Unit (MTU) Size Settings
1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
2. Locate and then click the following subkey in the registry:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NdisWan\Parameters
3. Add a Protocols subkey (if it does not already exist). To do so:
a. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
b. Type Protocols, and then press ENTER.
4. Add a 0 (zero) subkey to the Protocols subkey. To do so:
a. Click the Protocols subkey that you created step 3.
b. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
c. Type 0 (zero), and then press ENTER.
5. Click the 0 subkey that you created in step 4.
6. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
7. In the Value data box, type ProtocolType, and then click OK.
8. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
9. In the Value data box, type 800, make sure Hexadecimal is selected under Base, and then click OK.
10. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
11. Type PPPProtocolType, and then press ENTER.
12. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
13. In the Value data box, type 21, make sure Hexadecimal is selected under Base, and then click OK.
14. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
15. Type ProtocolMTU, and then press ENTER.
16. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
17. Under Base, click Decimal, type the MTU size that you want in the Value data box, and then click OK. ( I used 1400)
18. Quit Registry Editor.
19. Restart your computer.
On the Razr: Open Mobile Hotspot Settings-> Configure Mobile Hotspot. At the bottom, change the Client (DHCP) start address to 172.168.20.10

Any updates to this? Having the same problem and can't seem to make it work. Don't have a rooted RAZR so can't try the download link.
Hey! I used to have problems for a while with my tethering as well and ANY device I connected just wouldn't have access to the internet. I tried a lot of different apps, methods etc., to get it working and nothing seemed to work. But one day, I tried my own thing. I simply connected my device via wifi tethering (I don't use USB, but this should still work), and then, after it was connected, I simply opened my phones web browser to make sure I could access a data connection in the first place. And lo and behold, my tethering is working just fine!
So to put simply, what you should try is:
1) Connect your device via tethering (I used wifi, but usb should work too!).
2) Make sure you actually have a data connection! And then, open the web browser on your phone, and go to a web page (I just go to google )
3) Enjoy your tethering.
I hope this works for everyone, and not just me! XD
The last update from verizon fixed this issue.

When I go through all of that shouldn't I be able to go online with my laptop through the wireless tether on the phone? When I go into the available wifi networks my phone doesn't show up on the list.
Am I not understanding how this works?

C'Mon guys, help a brotha out. 175+ views and no replies?

Well, the answer is.... yes, probably. I'm not running that ROM at the moment, but ICS gave us the ability to tether in infrastructure mode, rather than merely ad hoc.
Having said that, there are variables out there that may be causing the issues you are having. I'm sure you have double-checked the settings and have set up wireless tether per Scott's instructions. So, here are your options (IMHO):
1) Try to find another tether app (such as Barnacle) to see if that might work.
2) Try to find an updated or different version of WiFi Tether.
3) Try the many different settings in WiFi Tether to see if they work for you.
4) Try a different ICS ROM to see if it works for you. (RezROM ICS does work for me)
5) Pay for Verizon's Hot Spot.
Good luck!
Thanks for the reply. I will triple-check all the settings again and go from there.

Go to www.downloadandroidrom.com scroll down to apk and click on it.
Next click on wifiteather.
Next click on wifi_teather_v3_0-pre14.apk
Close to the bottom of the page will be a Download Here link click on it.
If your using a PC place it on the root of the sd card if your using your phone make sure unknown sources is checked in the settings>applications menu.
Next go to the market and download and install apk installer.
Open apk installer on your phone and click on <ext_sd>
Next click on wifi_teather_v3_0-pre14.apk and click install.
After it installs click open and go to the menu sceen.
Go to settings and check Routing fix.
Next click on the access control and press on enable.
next click on the main screen to start wifi tether and click allow access from superuser.
Now check your wifi on your computer Android Tether should come up click connect.
Now on your phone go back to access control and your computer name should come up.
Click on your computer name and click apply on the bottom of the screen.
This sounds like a lot but it works.
Thanks guys, I had to rename the network and set the security. I thought I could just leave it unsecured but I guess not. It works now...
Thats good I never had to do that. But that is the only reason why I rooted my phone was for the wifi tether.
But ...
... Do any these options allow other mobile devices to see your hotspot? I'm running stock on my rooted Rezound. I tried WiFi / Wireless Tether, Barnacle, Open Garden, etc ... They let my laptop connect, but not mobile devices. I actually like Sense, and I don't really want to bother with other ROMs right now ...
Any ideas?

The only two ways I was able to achieve wireless tether with infracture mode was to buy the vzw hotspot feature and / or install an ICS ROM. I can attest that RezROM ICS handles the free wireless tether app flawlessly for me (after which I killed the VZW premium service).
I have searched through this forum, and have not yet found a thread pertaining to this issue. I am not a developer, just an android enthusiast, so i do not have a clue why, but the build.prop tether tweak does not seem to be working on some evo lte devices (including mine). The tether app would show connected, but with no internet access to PCs, laptops, anything not-android it seems. I will shed some light on how I fixed this issue, to hopefully help others in this forum who were most likely just as mind boggled as I was.
I downloaded foxfi from foxfi.com/bin since Sprint took it off of the market.
However, they did not take the foxfi addon off of the market, so I downloaded that as well.
Run foxfi, go to settings, and enable proxy. Foxfi will give you a proxy IP.
Connect to the network from your PC.
(I use Firefox, so I am unable to give specific browser instructions here)
Go to advanced network settings in your browser, and change the automatic proxy to manual, and type in the IP foxfi gives.
Wa-la! Hope this helps, if anyone has any questions, I will help as best as I can!
IN ADDITION: I have tried every other possible mod/app/setting that I have found on these forums. I do not know if Sprint hotfixed the phone to change the code of tethering (like i said, not a developer), because I bought my EVO LTE the last week in June. I will again clarify for the idiots below that cannot seem to read correctly, this is for those that have tried build.prop mod and/or wifi tether with generic ICS setting, fiddling with routing/MSS options and getting "connected with limited access", "no internet connection", or "connected" but still no web browsing capability to their PCs. If I am the only one out there with this problem, it would be my luck.
Happy tethering!

Thanks guys. I was making this harder than it needed to be too. Feel like a noob.
It doesn't matter, for some people, WiFi tether on any setting does not work, sprint did something to their network, I spent hours trying to figure it out. It would connect to other android devices, but would give no net connection to PCs

No prob. We're here to help each other! :good:
I've been using this app for about 2 months now without any problems, up until about 2 weeks ago. Now if I'm in default LTE mode, my laptop and tablet can connect to the hotspot, but I can't open a webpage in Firefox on either device, it just times out. I've verified that Firefox on my phone can access them. Also, I can open a cmd prompt on the laptop and get successful pings on google.com, but it still times out on the laptop or tablet.
If I reboot the phone to be on CDMA/EVDO then everything works fine, just slower. I'm on Sprint. I sent an email to the developer, and he stated he didn't think it was a problem in the app itself but advised me to check the APN settings. I can't seem to locate them on this phone.
Anyone else having this problem, or have any suggestions?
Thanks.

Try changing your DNS to 208.67.222.222 208.67.220.220 4.2.2.1 4.2.2.2 4.2.2.3 4.2.2.4 etc etc

Didn't change anything. Re-reading my original post, I realize I wasn't clear on a point:
I can ping google.com and get replies from a command prompt on my laptop when I'm attached to the wifi router and the phone is in LTE mode, but my web browser (firefox) will not display the google home page. If I select CDMA mode on the phone, then I can get to google from firefox.
Since I'm getting ping replies, I doubt DNS is the culprit. Seems like it's something with port 80. I'm starting to think Sprint did something to block the app on the LTE network.
Just to check, I reset my phone to factory default and re-installed the app. Same results.
Anyone else having problems with this while on LTE?
Thanks.

I know the app says if you have issues to turn on (or off a certain feature -don't remember which one is it now)

I contacted the developer Fabio, and he thinks I need to change some settings in the APN IPV4 protocol. Problem is, I can't seem to find where to change the settings on this phone. They should be in settings>connections>more networks>mobile networks, but the options are not on that screen. I'm really starting to regret getting this phone. I love the phone itself, but Sprint did a few things to "dumb down" the ROM that just plain piss me off. OK, I get they took out native tethering so they could sell that option. I don't like it, but at least it makes some kind of sense. They also took out the option in contacts to send a incoming call from a given contact straight to voicemail. That just makes no sense whatsoever. Also, I don't like there are no custom ROMs for this phone. If I could get this phone with a plain vanilla Android without all the Sprint mods, I'd be in heaven.
Anyway, does ANYONE have Wifi Tethering working on this phone (LPH-600) with Sprint and LTE?

Try APN Backup Restore, do a backup, gab the XML and open it with notepad or text wranger or any text editor to see if you find the setting that needs to be changed.
