frusterated...but understanding - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This is like my first or second post, but probably would have posted a lot more if i could. I can't post in the dev forum(understandable...i am considered a noob). However, i just had my 2nd odin experience...and just wish I had someone to help me out when i f things up.
I just flashed edt's new 2.2.1 rc1 over their previous build, and ended up in a "vibrant logo flashing" state....i panicked....then told myself to calm down, and try to odin back to stock...well, thank God, this time around i was prepared and the odin only took about 15 mins instead of 4 hours like the first time...
Anyways, i am frustrated because i couldn't report in the thread why i ended up in a boot loop....so i am afraid for others...think it might happen to more than just me...
alwell, not much i can do besides post in this forum till my noob status goes away.
Thanks for reading!

ODIN usually takes me about 4 minutes.. Anyway you need 10 posts to be able to post in Dev forum. Keep helping others!

You know, in the General section and dev section the stickies have most everything you need to resolve any problem, that along with watching some of the you tube videos...... you will have most of what you need. What is important is to keep trying, by doing that, you begin to understand the logic and then, you gravitate to the right answer the first time........

[Q] Advice not given

Okay. I posted my first ever question/request for advice the other day and, despite 79 views, I have had no response. Perhaps it was too dull for those who are more accomplished with all things Android and everybody assumed that somebody else would answer.
Perhaps within the morass of information on these forums the answers are already out there. Maybe, but who knows. In other forums people tend to at least say - look there for answers - and post a link to another thread. But, it has been Christmas and I guess we are all pretty busy this time of year - Merry Christmas to all by the way
So, I thought I would re-shape my question/needs here.
Could anybody give me, or at least point me in the direction of, a glossary of terms type of thing?
I need to know things like what does 'radio' mean? How does it relate to the 'flashing' process' , And any other terms which people take for granted as being blindingly obvious, but which may not be to those of us very inexperienced. This forum can be quite daunting, but still, enquiring minds wanna know
Any help, again, appreciated.

I would've loved to answer but perhaps you need to be more specific on what you want to be answered
you said you wanted to have 2.3.5 on ur DHD,but that doesn't tell anyone what you are asking for,if you are asking us to find a ROM for you,or how to flash a recovery first,or how to flash the ROM !
You should have to provide us more specific data, phone, model, rooted or stock, etc. It is normal that why you don't get replies.

HI, and thank you. Also apologies for my woolly question. And this is kind of my problem. When new to this even the questions I want answered are not always asked correctly. I was hoping to find a ROM for my Desire HD which has Sense 3.0. I have Gingerbread on the phone currently with Sense 2.1.
To be completely humble and honest, which I find to be the best way in almost all cases, I must say that I am not even sure what "how to flash a recovery" means, or "how to flash the ROM".
So, as you see, I am really new to this and feeling my way around. I am a quick learner though so I really just need bringing up to speed on a few of the basics and then I am sure I will be able to research my way around.
Anyway, thank you for your kind reply. I wasn't trying to be shirty with my post. I meant what I said - it is Christmas and I am sure people look in over the holidays but it is a busy time for everybody. I hope I have not caused offence.
Can I contact you on your email,i find that more easily accessible!

Please read before you do anything at all. From your posts it is plain you are very new to Modding so it is very important you understand what your doing as it void your warrenty and if done wrong can brick your device. Start with the stickies in the DHD section and read those a couple of times. Then check the Q&A and read there as well.
As mentioned, read the stickies in your section, there should be a lot of information there. In my device's subfora, there are great stickies chocked full of information. If we had the same device, I'd post some links for you. There's also a glossary of sorts stickied in the Thunderbolt section. Not everything in it will apply to your device but it may help with some general terms.
Before I even rooted my device, I read all of the stickies and recommended links. I then read over the Q&A and general subfora just to get a feel for it. What I read didn't make a lot of sense at the time, but later I remembered it and it made more sense. I then rooted my device, then read and read and read before flashing my first rom (CM6 - it was a while back).
It's a process, and the more you read the more you'll understand, until eventually you can start answering some of the questions that go unanswered. Just give it time... and make sure that you know exactly what you're doing - and why - before you jump in to something.
Good luck!

Hi there Zendel.
Apologies for the lateness of this reply. Been a busy day. I wanted to say thanks for the advice and to also fill in a couple of blanks, if I may.
You are quite correct, I am very new to modding and my only fear is buggering it up, as we say in Lancashire lol. However, it has already been rooted by a friend who took me through the process over the phone some months ago.
When I first got the phone it was with Orange and had all that Orange junk and splash screen etc. Hence, my friend talked me through rooting and installing a standard factory ROM. It was a lot to take in and, at the time, I didn't make any notes along the way, which would have helped me now - hindsight is a wonderful thing, as they say.
More recently he pointed me at a link to a RUU (is that right?) so that I could upgrade from Froyo 2.2 to Gingerbread 2.3.3 with Sense 2.1 - so, in a nutshell, void warranty is no longer a concern
I have taken a look at some of the stickies, though I have not studied them intensely at this point. I will spend more time looking however and come back, perhaps, with more questions - or at least more relevant questions I should hope

[Q] SGH-i777 will not load after trying rom manager backup

I've been google searching and looking through forums for 3 hours and I'm not finding a good answer or answers close but I'm afraid to mess with it further without at least seeing if someone has a good idea for an easier fix.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S2 AT&T (SGH-i777) that was running ICS. I used odin3 v1.85 on my pc with Siyah-v3.4.2-nomswap-I777 to give me superuser. Phone worked fine for a day. Later I downloaded rommanager. I was wanting to make a backup of my rom but it asked me to install ClockworkMod. I went through and picked it and it downloaded/installed. Then I went to run the backup but rommanager hung and it wouldn't finish. I chose to "wait" for two times but then the third I force closed. When I tried to load rommanager up again it froze my phone. I pulled my battery out and tried to boot. I think I got the start screen with the yellow triangle and then black screen. I tried to power it on again and nothing. Then my screen did a very faint power on and off every 10 seconds until I pulled the battery out. I was able to get into the "odin mode" using the volume up/down + power. I tried to run the Siyah again just to see if it did anything but no dice
My fear was that I selected the wrong clockworkmod? I've tried finding finding the right clockworkmod that I can use with odin. I found recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.6-galaxys2att.zip but I'm afraid it isn't the right thing (isn't a tar file) and so I've not done anything as a result. Does this sound like i f'ed up in loading the wrong clockworkmod? Is there a tar file I can use with Odin to fix the mistake so the phone will boot/load? I assume if nothing else I can just load a custom rom or start fresh but, if possible, I would really like to repair my mistake so I can save some files and backup apps. Thanks for any help or ideas!

My apologies...that's what happens when I'm looking at different places before posting.
And there just happens to be a sticky explaining why this happened. I suggest you look at it.

Like this sticky here? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1824419
Or this one that tells people to read all the stickies before doing anything?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1587151
WOW! You have been a member here long enough (since 2009), now I understand some of us do not post as much. But you should have seen the stickies at the top of the forum with a big WARNING SIGN on it. I guess you choose to ignor the warning... :silly:
Why did you even think of using ROM Manager when all you had to do is reboot into recovery and do it from there?
Wow...
Wow...first off thanks for being absolutely not helpful. You mean the sticky that tells me not to do what I already did? You mean the sticky that in none of the five pages of posts has an answer to my question or issue (really just a long rant about people who make a mistake)? You mean the sticky I didn't read because I was using a different (I know now in retrospect not so great) website? And I get berated because I visited this website three years ago to make one comment on a post about a windows mobile topic? Did you all get so many posts by antagonizing others asking for help and not posting much useful to the actual request? Unless I am wrong I posted in the "Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting" section of this website but from what I get so far I think it might be the "Place for snarky comments & unhelpful responses without reading a question".
In the hopes that someone wants to be helpful, I would really like to know if there is a way to fix the issue by using Odin to put the right clockworkmod recovery on the device. If so I appreciate any help on locating where I might find the right file. If this is an issue that can't be fixed and my only choice is to flash a new rom then that is helpful too. Thanks.

It's called you should research your problem before posting it. And the fact that you're trying to put cwm on there without flashing a kernel tells me that you need to do some reading up on this device before you so any kind of modding. Otherwise you'll end up with a paperweight.
Sent from my Zanpakuto using Getsuga Tensho!
+1 to nick comments. As everyone already stated. Read those links. And all you need to do is flash the kernel. It has the CWM recovery builded into it. Use AJ's siyah kernel.
Sent from my SGH-I777 using xda app-developers app
Exactly. The fact that he's still saying he wants the"right"version of cwm means he still hasn't read the stickies or read enough about this device to make informed decisions. Just do some reading, and take your time. Not every device is the same. Don't want to end up messing yourself up. Which, as previously stated, could've been avoided . Good luck.

Can't get Galaxy Note to Root via Odin

I'm trying to root my i717 Galaxy Note. I'm still on Gingerbread, so I have been trying to use Odin v.1.85, but it keeps failing. I have downloaded the latest USB drivers from Samsung, but nothing works. Any suggestions?
Go back to post 1 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1863995 and read those suggestions.
Edit: added link because somehow I posted in the wrong thread since the OP posted his issue in 3 different places.

not to discredit person posting first link or the author of the first link, but STUDACRIS's link sure seems a lot easier to understand and from my experience has always been sound advice.
im sure its just me, cause I always want to play things a little safer, whether its overkill or not. I don't understand why someone would make a seemingly large leap from GB to JB in one swoop, let alone rooting the GB before hand.
again, that's just me. if Samsung or carrier is providing the unrooted upgrade, I let them take care of that leap and they are responsible, then rooting is the only thing I have to worry about not screwing up. better safe than sorry. its a marathon not a sprint.
absolutely no disrespect meant. its your phone not mine.
best of luck to you my friend.

sgs2 rooting and installing rom

Helloo people.. I am new to this community.
i wanna root my piece and install a rom and get to a new world of android customization.
ne1 help me with procedure ??? from start to End. As i dont knw mch abt rooting and in a learning process.
Details would help a lot mate. Go to phone settings then about phone. Don't need imei so don't post that.
We also need you to search
Root procedures has been covered hundreds if not thousands of times across the internet. So finding a good root method isn't going to be hard if you search.
But andrew is right, we still need more information about your device (settings>about phone) to get you into the right direction..
If you're unable to search for & find the info you need given how often this has been discussed here over the past two years (easily the two most discussed topics), you'd probably question whether you should be messing with your phone in the first place.
'ne1 help me with procedure ??? from start to End. As i dont knw mch abt rooting and in a learning process.' - will lead to a busted phone if you 'do' before you learn 'how' & 'why'.
Spoonfeeding this person the info they want because they provide the info in settings/about phone is ridiculous. The default response to threads like this should be 'Search', not 'Do A, B, C, D & E'.
How about you hold on for my next response before jumping the gun and guessing I'm going to "spoon feed him" when have I ever spoon fed anyone? He says what hes on and il tell him what kernel to use. Down to him to work out how by reading like I would and have put loads of times. Why you being funny with us for? You should no my response by now Mb
Mistahbungles advice will stand the OP in good stead. Its not a problem him being a noob,as The Hulk has got a thread running in the general section.
He is welcome to go there instead of creating crap topics like this that have been covered loads of times.
He is wanting to know everything without doing a lot of the spadework himself.

Well....it is clear that the OP needs to search.

Maybe people are tired of people joining here, and instead of searching, wanting links and step by step instructions of how to do things.
Maybe these same people get a bit annoyed when they try to follow the rules and other people dont.

I understand were your coming from. But I haven't spoon fed. I thought we was a bit like a family on q and a trying to help and point people were they need to go. Guess I was wrong
Pls read my first post. I asked for details of his phone thats all. I even said thanks to the next post for saying use search before any one reply. He got were I was going I think. Find out his details and point him to right kernel. I feel like crap cuz of this thread now and I did nothing wrong. I to respect you theunderling.
You do what you like andrew but the guy will only end up relying on you rather than finding out and learning for himself.
Also,if you advise him about something you could end up getting him in a right mess. That wouldnt be your fault but his.
Eg.
If he flashing something and he loses his efs,or odin doesnt recognize his phone,or he doesnt back up and loses valuable stuff.
You see,are you meant to warn him about all the risks beforehand. As T has said,he should search before doing anything as it will be the OP that will end up with problems.
I could hang around and just post "search" all the time but I cant be bothered.
Maybe the regulars on here can say what Ive advised before
"Before flashing anything, read the threads in q+a to give an idea of problems with flashing.Do it for a week since just about everything is covered".
That maybe a more polite way of saying "search",but better to get straight to the point.
-------------------------------------------
maybe your an iphone expert
-------------------------------------------
This is why I point out the kernel or rom to be used but then say read. Iv tested loads for people on xda and no how to put it Bk to working mode but I get your point about relying on me had that a few times in Pms and it does do my head in. I just like to help too much I think. Your point is noted.

[Q] Motorola Atrix 4G Issues (MB860), HELP

First Issue I have is having to Post 10 times before I can post in some Other tread. Totally annoying. My Atrix has been having issues for a while now. For months it would just shut it's self OFF. That stop and changed to Restarting it's self about 1-2 months ago. About a Month into the when it did restart I would get the dang modem Error I'm trying to fix thru http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=991072&page=1. But all the Dang Links are Out of date/broken links. When I tried to post I get you new. you need 10 or more posts. IE this post.. 1 down 9 more to go.
Thing is I really like my Atrix and would love to fix it. I'm also a total N00B when it come to Smart phone fixing of this sort. So I need detailed directions. I don't want to SCREW anything up.
Please Help me out here.

More Info. Okay I've done nothing to this phone that was not AT&T, or Motorola Directed. So I'm not sure what all the Lingo means so Please talk to me on a more day to day basis of someone who has limited knowledge. Not saying I'm dumb (5 years of Computer Security Specialist College) so I do know about computer more then the average person. When it comes to Cell phones.. Well Till Learned how to dot he whole turn on my 4G and push the volume button I did not know Android was a Linix program.
I'm trying to get my 10 posts.
Okay read some more Posts. I'm AT&T and in the USA. So this might make things a little better.
This is not a very good way to get your 10 posts. In fact it's a very bad way. Please use "edit post" to add additional information.
The 10-post limit is there for a good reason, and I for one am glad it's there. This doesn't belong anywhere else, certainly not in a development thread, so I don't see a problem here.
As for your problem, I'm not sure what to say as I'm not quite sure what exactly you've tried so far. I'd recommend trying to flash a full system SBF. Don't bother looking for SBFs here though, all the links have been removed (on purpose). Instead search for das8nt on google. As for the instructions, there are other threads with detailed instructions so go read those. Generally, flashing a SBF is potentially a very risky and dangerous process, but you should be fine so long as you carefully follow the procedure.
