Does anyone know if the tethering hack described here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=11493471&postcount=193
enables the Firefox browser in the webtop mode? Or is there some other check?
Thanks,
Kevin

ad blocker seems to work for me what app is it not working in??
I use wireless tethering and theoretically the ad blocking should carry over into what I do on my PC but its not.

No it shouldn't, that's not how host files work. Host files is for local (i.e. that specific machine) lookup only, before it asks a remote DNS server. Your tethered computer will never go anywhere near your phone's host file.
If you want to block ads on the tethered computer, you could always block the ads in that computer's host file. Or use AdBlock in the browser. Or find some way to manually configure the phone's iptables install to drop those connections/reroute them (an overly complicated "solution").
Thanks! Ended up just doing a Firefox Add-on

Same here ad blocker acts like it works (installing new host) but I still have ads everywhere.
AdFree App... Hidden in the words
After you update your hosts file the app CLEARLY says..
Your Android device should now be AdFree, however you might need to reboot to clear your DNS cache.
..
Judging by the 15k 5 star reviews.. you might be missing something..

Actually, I did see that and then reboot. Still, no change. As far as what I was wanting to achieve, I am good to go now with the FireFox Add-On. Thanks anyways.

Exactly how is it not working? What makes you say that? More information might help us track down any issue you're having.
Those things won't block all ads, because it only blacklists certain domains. Any ads built directly into the app (i.e. that the app doesn't have to fetch from a remote server) won't be blocked. Ads from smaller ad networks might also not be blocked, as well as many ads on websites (often blacklisting based on the host file can't block the ad without also blocking legit content).

The native hotspot doesn't work. I'm running Wireless Tether 3.0 beta... once installed you will need to go into the apps settings and change the profile from Auto to Fascinate.... For some reason there is still a unresolved issue with utilizing the AP over Ad-Hoc. So you have to stick with Ad-hoc.

Like ALL the ads that used to be blocked are not blocked any more.
Is there anyone else using Barnacle with this phone? It seems to work great except for when i try to stop the tethering. the UI shows it has stopped but the device i am tethered to is clearly still receiving data?
Anyone else experiencing this?

Why use Barnacle? The native tethering works better (actually behaves as an AP instead of adhoc) once you freeze or delete TetherManager2.apk

Yes - but it would be needed for Barnacle anyway.
"freeze" is something you can do with TitaniumBackup.
I usually just manually remove it in an ADB shell.

I don't think anything is safe any more. AT&T seems to be doing deep packet inspection now.
So far people who have tethered Android tablets don't seem to have problems, but even light tethering with a PC gets you nailed now.
good to know, thanks again
Just spent a month in asia, and it's great to be back! I see there's been quite a bit of development
Anyway, I'm currently staying at a place with no internet, so I'm trying to use my phone as a hotspot. It was working great last night, but it suddenly stopped working while I was downloading a video. It took me to the dreaded upsell page. I was using the apn change method, and I've tried resetting the apn and rebooting.I've also tried the android WiFi tether app with and without Hasoon's method. None of them seem to work correctly. What's funny though is that I can use the hotspot to access google websites, such as gmail and google search, and even facebook. But almost every other site is redirected to the upsell page.
I'm on stock ics. Any ideas?

Apparently T-Mobile have found a workaround as well, a buddy of mine complained of the same thing, we tried everything possible, same issue, therefore they probably blocked it.
Have you tried setting your user agent on the computer to android? It is possible that they are doing some kind of deep packet inspection down to the HTTP header level to filter outs stuff.
Stupid T-Mobile.

If you have Firefox, install this addon:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/user-agent-switcher/
U could use internet explorer it doesn't or use html website but I know it works cuz its diff from google chrome
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G using xda premium
The pages that work anyway
are all https.
The user agent switcher add-on for Firefox will help. After you've installed, you can get a wider selection of user agents by opening the switcher options, where there is a link to the developerr's website for downloading a bigger selection.
