WiFi hotspot - HTC Amaze 4G

Just spent a month in asia, and it's great to be back! I see there's been quite a bit of development
Anyway, I'm currently staying at a place with no internet, so I'm trying to use my phone as a hotspot. It was working great last night, but it suddenly stopped working while I was downloading a video. It took me to the dreaded upsell page. I was using the apn change method, and I've tried resetting the apn and rebooting.I've also tried the android WiFi tether app with and without Hasoon's method. None of them seem to work correctly. What's funny though is that I can use the hotspot to access google websites, such as gmail and google search, and even facebook. But almost every other site is redirected to the upsell page.
I'm on stock ics. Any ideas?

Apparently T-Mobile have found a workaround as well, a buddy of mine complained of the same thing, we tried everything possible, same issue, therefore they probably blocked it.

Have you tried setting your user agent on the computer to android? It is possible that they are doing some kind of deep packet inspection down to the HTTP header level to filter outs stuff.

Stupid T-Mobile.

If you have Firefox, install this addon:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/user-agent-switcher/

U could use internet explorer it doesn't or use html website but I know it works cuz its diff from google chrome
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G using xda premium

The pages that work anyway
are all https.
The user agent switcher add-on for Firefox will help. After you've installed, you can get a wider selection of user agents by opening the switcher options, where there is a link to the developerr's website for downloading a bigger selection.

Orbot -Tor Project: Anonymity Online- on Prime

Just pulled up drippler -Transformer Prime- and it had a post about orbot, I'm about to download it and see how well it works on the prime.
Anyone that wants to read about it here is a link talking about it http://android.appstorm.net/reviews/internet-reviews/enjoy-secure-browsing-with-orbot-and-the-tor-project/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+AndroidAppStorm+%28Android+AppStorm%29
If anyone has already tried it out even on other platforms let us hear what you think of it.
Why don't you just download and try? It's just an app to connect you to Tor, like on any computer.
Evidently it works... slowly as it's Tor. See Tor website to understand why.
Unfortunately Orbot isn't working for me in China, and I've tried using bridges. It just never completes a connection regardless of how long I let it run.
It's frustrating, because I can access most blocked sites like Facebook or Youtube using my laptop and free proxy software (Freegate). This inability to find a similar free way to get over the Great Firewall with my Prime reduces the value somewhat of my tablet relative to my laptop, which is a pity, because I'd otherwise use my tablet much more.
I had some success with a free VPN (RaptorVPN) until they went the app route. I guess I'll have to invest in a fee-based VPN, but I'm hesitant to do so because you never know when your VPN might get blocked.
Haven't tried on my Prime yet but I know that it worked fine on my Thunderbolt.
I tried it out right after I posted, and it worked pretty well. I expected some slow down, its just the nature of what tor is. I tried it later that night on my computer and found it played nicely with hotspot shield.
Kinda not the same topic, but has anyone noticed that XDA Premium HD is off the android market now... I upgraded by rom and now I cant get the app back.

You gon get sniped by the government. Jk, when I visited china, I noticed they hadn't blocked encyclopediadramatica (which had a very funny (offensive) article on china) and 4chan. What is the firewall anyway? Anyways, I think you can use internet proxies(?).

Nowadays virtually no English-language websites get blocked. Unfortunately, the handful that do get blocked -- social networking sites like Facebook -- are among the most useful for foreigners. I can access them using proxy software like Freegate on my Windows 7 laptop, but I'm looking for an Android option. As for "what is the firewall anyway?", Google "Great Firewall" or "Golden Shield project."

Thanks TechAnimal. I just tried it, but unfortunately the app mistakenly thinks my Prime is unrooted, and won't run. It is most definitely rooted -- I just rooted it a few days ago to use the EzOverclock app. I'll have to research this more. The tun.ko loader app also says it can't find an appropriate module, but I'm hoping that is a separate problem.
EDIT: Sorry, I've never rooted an Android device before, didn't realize I needed to use the Superuser app. (Didn't need to use it with EzOverclock.) DroidVPN works fine so far!
i've been using tor for a while now on my prime. works great, browsing is slow but working.

[Q] AT&T Hotspot Manager, can I download it?

Now, before anyone confuses this with AT&T Smart Wifi on the market, I'm not asking for that (that app is garbage in my opinion.)
Now, to the task at hand...
Stock Samsung ROMs have something called AT&T Hotspot Manager embedded into the Wifi settings, which allow the automatic sign in of AT&T hotspots around the country without opening a browser to sign into the network.
I'm using CM9 nightlies at the moment, and upon installing the hotspot manager is not packaged with the nightlies. Not an issue regarding CM9, but I was wondering is there a download package or zip that I can install via CWM or any other method to regain this automatic sign in capability? I'm at a Starbucks and Barnes and Noble a lot, and found this aspect of the phone to be very useful.
Appreciate the timely replies
I'm curious about this too, I've settled in to AOKP after jumping around on ICS roms for a month or so and I just realized I'm not getting my hotspots anymore
I'll sniff around and edit this if I find anything useful, I'm not sure what exactly the hotspot manager was and why we wouldn't be able to just enter the settings for the hotspot into a standard wifi connection
Edit: So el goog wasn't very helpful, all I was able to find was a few similar posts to this one with no remedy. I went to my Titanium Backup and searched through my backed up apps knowing that the manager had to be in there somewhere because I'd used some of the ROM's based off of the stock i777 and found something called "At&t Hot Spots." I restored it to my current ROM and I'll test it at Mickey D's at lunch.
Don't. It's a terrible app.
Looking over your shoulder...
Well restoring the app seems to have had no effect, it still requires me to log in to the wifi. I'm not sure why everyone says it was a terrible app, before I rooted my battery life was just fine with it running, even if I neglected to turn off wifi

I'll agree that most of their software is absolutely worthless trash, but this one in particular I really thought was handy... All it did was automatically log into AT&T hotspots when you were in range
This question should be relocated to Q&A

First off, I do agree. But what this thread is concerning is that it's not an app. Rather, it was an embedded feature in the stock ROM of this phone, checked off in the wi-fi settings.
Since it's not an app, one cannot readily download it off the market. So it must be a package. From the results of this thread though, I guess a package like this doesn't exist..?
Here's the file: AT&T Hotspots 0.955
This is extracted from a UCKH1 stock ROM. Hopefully it works for you.

That makes about as much sense as having to type in your WEP password each time you log into your home network. Net battery life would be about equal to not having the app, as it takes screen on time (BIGGER battery suck) to go though all the steps necessary to login without this app.

I had the earlier version installed through my Titanium backups. I installed the one posted on this thread and I saw that the app was upgraded. (Additionally, the at&t hotspots icon vanished from the app drawer, I could see that it was running though).
However, it doesn't seem to connect automagically to attwifi. Any clues?

Firewalling - Whats The Minimum Required Stuff To Allow

Hi guys. i installed a firewall on my phone, and i just wanted to ask as to what basic stuff i need to allow to use internet.
What i mean is that i have firefox on the phone, and if i block everything and only allow firefox, i cant browse internet. but if i turn off the firewall, i can browse normally.
So i was just wondering what else i need to allow to use firefox.
i hope you guys get what i am trying to ask here.
You could try opening ports 80 (default http) and 443 (default https), but isn't your question better directed to the maker of the firewall?
ok got it to work, instead of blacklisting, i did white listing, and it worked well.
advisable for anyone who wants security to give it a try
if you would firewall your pc, then why not your phone?

Which firewall application did you use? I tried Android Firewall, but it would crash all the time, and it would not store or display activity logs. I previously used Droidwall on my original Incredible running CM7 (Gingerbread) and it seemed to work very well with the white listing of applications.
I removed Android Firewall from the Dinc 4G today and have no idea if anything else out there will work on ICS or Jellybean

How to remove "Internet connection requirement" from Android apps?

Hi, I have an app which looks like the developer has removed their servers so it always fails the "internet connection" check.
Its IONROAD. A AR driving app.
I paid for the PRO version so its all good. I use an older version not the latest as I hate the latest version.
99% of the app is using the GPS or the camera. It does check the internet for the weather and a few little things.
I've tried it at home while connected to wireless, in the car while connected to Mobile Data, I've uninstalled, reinstalled and updated and all versions fail the internet checks. To me it looks like they closed their servers so the app refuses to work without the internet so it will never work again.
What I want to do is remove that internet check so it will keep working without the need for their servers. If it never connects to the internet it doesn't bother me. I dont care for the current weather in a AR driving app, I care for how close the car in front of me is or if i'm drifting out of the lane I'm in. Absolutely nothing to do with the internet so how do I remove that check?
I have the APK, trying to get it into the Android SDK and not sure how? Even if I do get it there what do I remove?
All I want is that internet check removed. As I said I paid for the app so the licence check always passes as I paid for it.
The dev has abandoned the app, they refuse to reply or update. As they closed their servers I'm guessing they totally abandoned the app.
Any help what to remove and how to remove it? Is it an easy unzip, edit a file then zip and reinstall? Or is it a complete import into SDK, rebuild, test, etc and make a whole new app?
I'm not sure what or how to edit it.
Thanks

It is not a simple matter as it would require ripping the app apart and searching through smali code for the server stuff to be removed. As that is what it is doing. It uses their servers to send the weather and a few other things. Now that their servers are off you can bet that it wont be working for long as it will also use other info for things connected to the gps.

The app refuses to work completely. As soon as it loads up it says there is no internet and closes. Thats why I want to remove the need for their servers and internet.
I was hoping there might be some sort of offline mode built in I could enable or remove the "no internet connection" error so it never fails.
Go have a look at the app and you will see you cant do anything as it fails the internet check when the app loads. As they have closed the servers then they have abandoned the app so we can do what we want with it as they obviously dont care about it anymore.
The problem I have is its the best AR driving app there is for android and as they abandoned it there is nothing to replace it with as all the others are crap.
Hi, similar problem to the GoPro app where internet connection is required. I would also really like to remove the internet checking and although the app is free are we getting in to the areas of cracking?
Please update this if you get somewhere.

Just because they abandon it doesn't meant that they might not throw a fit at having it edited. I'll take a look at the decompiled apk. I have a feeling that everything it does will be tied to the servers so even if we did stop it from checking the servers the stuff you want might still not work.

Great thanks.
When the app worked it was mainly GPS and camera stuff, It would get the weather from the server and it does keep a log at the server so it will send a result at the end but while your driving I doubt it does anything with the server as I've been to some places without phone reception and it still worked fine.
Maybe there is only a check when it loads up that we need to remove?

There are tons of tutorials on how to decompile the app. You will need a pc. As for what to look for. That is hit or miss really. As it is in smali and not Java. Also there could be safe guards that if the code is removed then the app won't work. Also some apps can't be decompiler at all as they self destruct if they are.

Anyone having a go at seeing if they can remove the connection to internet requirement?
I want to keep using v1.6.3 but I did find v1.5.1 works with only a random internet check. For my last 10 min drive it checked 3 times but I did do a 15 min drive and it never checked the whole time.
As their servers are down it will always fail if it checks.
If you know where to look you will find all different versions. I wont post where but they are available. 1.6.3 to me is the best, its the most stable, has the best features but its got the internet checks which need to be removed before you can use it as it checks at the start and closes as it cant connect to their servers.

??? I dont understand?
Their servers are down forever. they closed them so it doesnt respond. I want the app to stop checking their servers, to work 100% offline.

No I mean if you use it with gps only the app should not try to connect with the servers because it checks the network status to see if there is internet connection...

the app always tries to connect to their servers at startup. as they closed the servers it always fails and the app closes.
if you turn mobile data off it also fails and closes the app.
we need to remove the check so the app will work again.
