Ported Radio - XPERIA X10 Android Development

Well here i am again, busy busy lately because off moving to a new house.
I have something done for x10, i succesfully installed a new radio system. I cant exactly explain it now because i'm still trying a few things.
What did i do?
Before this, you had to use files from 2.1 rom from SE to get network and data. Now you dont haha
I can make calls without any files from a SE rom, not sure if it is handy or not but i think it is because off some files from 2.1 inflicted with others. I fully customized and rebuilded the radio system.
I post this here because i hope we can get a discussion about this and i think we gonna have some profit of it. Shout your questions or start a discussion so we can develope this further.
ps. i'm working on my roms as well so dont worry MIUI update is nearly finished.
CM7 update also coming.

i would like to see where this goes.
@trip sorry to bug but can you check your PM box

So this eliminates the need for flashing certain basebands for certain roms? E.g. 4x baseband for Gingerbread?

according to trips:
Update is coming. With my newly succesfully tested radio system i think this is gonna be unified baseband version.

trip have you tested for stability & standby time?
is it same as original, worse or maybe even better than SE crap? ^^

if it is unified, that means we are able run a radio modulus not from the existence baseband but from other location?
It absolutly fresh,it might also useful for mix roms

I'm no developer but this seems like it might be a very important step. Thanks for your hard work and I can't wait to see what this could mean for clearing up baseband issues.

Hi Trip,
Will this also help to boost the in-call volume, for instance in Skype it is much louder.
Nice progress!
greetings,
Ronald

It is stable, the phone shows error when you check baseband. I just flashed some other radio and it seemed to work. No errors only takes long for network is identified, in the meantime signal strength is good and you can make calls. Only shows "no service" for a while and then it shows the network youre on. Pretty cool huh

Sounds awesome! although it shows up as unknown, could you customize it to say something like your custom radio?

I think that can be done yes

Excuse my ignorance on this but are you refering to the WCDMA radio or the 802.11 radio?

I mean the GSM/WCDMA radio
It opens a lot more doors i can tell you that.

I think this should be a dev thread so those who know something could help you to develope this...

I guess, just a guesswork(Dont kill me if I am wrong),in the part of the Wifi Tethering, you directed the actions to other codes not included in the kernel instead of to the kernel so as to avoid those unusable code inside the kernel?
Oh,yes,Do you have a look on the Arc Launcher/sys dump?
Would you mind to mod the launcher such that it wont to laggy on our X10 as the 3D performance of our X10 is screwed up.....
It is very nice if you include that launcher in the rom

[Q] cyanogenmod 7 wifi issues

I recently flashed on cm7 on my aria. it is great but my data usage began shooting up. i realized it was due to the fact that everytime i lock my phone, it disables my wifi (i saw this because everytime i unlock im on 3g for a 1-2 seconds then i get on wifi so that means that the whole time my phone is locked it uses 3g data ) is there anyway i can prevent this from occurring??
Thanks,
Okachowwa
Menu -> settings -> wireless & networks -> wi-fi settings -> menu -> advanced -> wi-fi sleep policy -> never
I think that's it.

Have you checked the Wifi Settings to see which sleep option is selected? There is an 'Never' option which tells wifi to stay on even when the phone sleeps.
One thing I noticed its that if I leave my house I have to turn off wifi and turn it back on to find my router.

yup...that's why you just turn your wifi off with the notification widget (very simple and painless might I add) if you know you're leaving the house...what's the point of having wifi enabled if you're not in range of your network? all it's going to do is drain your battery. i left my wifi enabled one day when i sent to work and within half the day i had ~12% battery life...definitely not good practice to leave it enabled that's my 2 cents, do as you wish though. to each his own.

Yup, I have the same issue with CM7 nightlies. This worked flawlessly in CM6 and stock2.1. So far there isn't a viable solution.
from the CM6.1.1 thread...
Q. How do I keep my wifi from going to sleep every time the screen shuts off?
A. There is a hidden feature that disables wifi sleep.
menu > Settings > Wireless & networks > wifi settings > menu (again) > advanced > Wi-Fi Sleep policy > Never > menu > Save
However: although you can keep the wifi service from sleeping, the wifi driver will still sleep on it's own after detecting no bus activity for a period of time.

I've made sure to set Wifi Sleep Policy to "Never" but that did not fix my wifi problems. What I see when I open Wifi Settings is a cycle of:
Code:
Scanning --> Connecting --> Disconnected... Scanning, etc
When I look in logcat it shows it attemping (in vain) to authenticate against the last wifi network I was using -- even though it is no longer in range (and clear across town). In a nutshell it is refusing to recognize the actual nearby network UNTIL I toggle wifi settings.
I've had the same behavior on FR008 and the stock ATT 2.1 load as well. When Wifi is in that on but not really connected state some apps can wake it up...the default browser usually will, but Listen would not. I just gave up and only turn on wifi when I need it.

What is the point of having wifi set to ON when you are not in range of a network? Hence why, if you are using CM7 or CM6, you should utilize the notification widget and turn wifi off if you know you're leaving the area of your network. It's simple. Things aren't ALWAYS going to work how YOU want them to work. Thing will not always be automatic. I think I quote attn1 when I say this, just because it doesn't work how you want it to work, does not mean it is broken.

Well, just because people don't work exactly like you work, does not mean they are doing it wrong. If something is broken I'm going to call it out. I might be incorrect, but let's be clear: you aren't questioning that wifi in CM7 isn't working the way it did in CM6, you are questioning my behavior -- which is a weak argument.
I guess you don't understand the issue, so I'll spell it out:
Wifi worked flawlessly and automatically for me in stock 2.1 AND CM6. This automatic behavior does not work in CM7. Manually toggling something that simply "just worked" before is a regression, not a feature. Hence the reason I point it out -- the devs can't fix something unless they know it's broken, and I seriously doubt the devs are able to test all/every permutation. I have nothing but respect for the work they do, thus my very respectful tones in my earlier posts. I've had no indication that the devs are unwilling to get feedback about their work.
You asked a question though, and here is the answer:
I leave Wifi on all the time because I'm a consultant -- I work in many different locations throughout the week, travelling the country. I have dozens of wifi networks saved on my phone, and it is useful for me to have my phone automatically jump on the correct, nearest network. I'd rather use free wifi instead of paying AT&T for data charges. It is not always possible for me to remember I'm in a location with a known wifi network, or to remember to manually toggle wifi settings: it is useful for me to have this happen in the background. Sometimes I'm on a call, sometimes I'm heading into a meeting and I'd rather not mess with my phone. I want wifi to be on all time, scanning for the correct network, and jumping on it when it's in range.
Outrageous, right?! Not actually -- this is the existing behavior in CM6 and stock 2.1. From my standpoint, wifi just worked -- I didn't have to think about it, didn't have to manually toggle something to prevent AT&T data charges.
This is desired behavior for me, and I'm happy with rolling back to CM6 to get it. I understand that _you_ don't need this behavior, but that doesn't mean it's wrong. It just means the world is bigger than you realized.
And yes: wifi in CM7 (beta) is currently broken. Read the threads. Many people are having problems with it.

That's a good tip, I feel kind of dumb for not thinking about it lol and I also agree that it is good practice to do so. I just wanted to point it out in case a dev was going through this thread which is relevant to the topic.

fyi CM6 & 2.1 != CM7. Your argument is null & void.
Also, being a "consultant" and the very important man you are, flashing a rom that's not even in beta stages yet probably isn't the best idea you've ever had.

Why do you remind us that the rom is in a beta stage? "Beta" implies it is not fully functional, but your argument all along has been that it works perfectly....
Look, it's clear you haven't actually understood any of my posts. I'm highlighting error messages or erratic behavior I see in logcat running CM7. I've posted what I've seen so the devs can take action, or not, as they choose. Since you aren't in that audience I don't understand what your beef is.
Oh wait! Straw man arguments; personal attacks; logical fallacies: I've been dealing with either a highschool student or a troll - not sure which.

That being said. Beta does NOT necessarily imply that thing are not fully functioning, it simply implies that it hasn't been put into RC or stable. You can have a fully functioning beta program. HOWEVER, it may not be working properly. But creating a thread about an issue that's been brought up 20+ times now is pointless. I'm PRETTY sure the devs know about the issue, should it actually be an issue. Now that I just wasted another 15 seconds of my life, i'm going to casually /part from this thread and I'll end my post with this quote again, in case you didn't catch it the first time.

1) Because Google Maps uses known wifi hotspots to help establish your location.
2) So that you don't have to keep toggling wifi on and off when moving between hotspots (or home and work, for example).
3) To use the network notification feature (aka "notify me when an open network is available").
HTH
Edit: seems to be fixed in RC3!

Sorry to tell you but that was with the old wifi stuff (every nightly up to build 25), which I had no problem with. The RC/nightlies have new wifi data made by jznomoney, which I have on and off problems with. Its working for most people but there are a handful who are having problems. I flashed ladios' kernel and my wifi is doing a lot better with the new RC/nightlies.

I've noticed something similar with CM7 on my Aria. When I leave the house and come back it doesn't always connect automatically and it will enter into this cycle of scanning, connecting, disconnected.
I had to reboot the phone to get it to stop the cycle and stay connected. I don't use a lot of data anyway but I still prefer to use wifi when available. Interestingly just now it wouldn't even see any of my neighbor's wifi networks at all which is odd.

[Q] US Cell TP2

I'm currently using a USCellular (CDMA) Touch Pro2, on a GSM network (Viaero wireless, in Nebraska). In WinMo, everything works fine, and when I boot into Android everything that should work does... except... Anytime it sleeps, it drops it's connection to the GSM network and doesn't connect till I wake it. That means any calls, texts, emails, etc that come while it's asleep don't show till I manually wake it (or in the case of calls, they go to voicemail). I've tried searching, to no avail, so I was wondering if any of you smarties can help. My startup.txt is as follows
set ramsize 0x10000000
set ramaddr 0x10000000
set mtype 2292
set KERNEL zImage
set initrd initrd.gz
set cmdline "lcd.density=240 msmvkeyb_toggle=off gsensor_axis=2,1,3 force_cdma=0 board-htcrhodium.is_cdma=0 pm.sleep_mode=2 physkeyboard=rhod400"
boot
the pm.sleep_mode=2 was based on advice I found by searching and tried, but no dice, still dropping... it was set to 1 before...
Any ideas? I would LOVE to run Android as my daily, and AFAIK this is the only thing stopping me...
I don't know it will help, but on any recent kernel I believe you should use sleep mode of 1.
board-htcrhodium.is_cdma should be 1. F

I had it that way, but when I did it wouldn't see the GSM at all, it would try CDMA, and then fail and drop into airplane mode... That's when I tried setting it to 0, and was able to get a consistant signal, except for the sleep issue...
Thank you for your reply!

As I had said, it was at sleep mode of one, and I got the dropping. Based on my searching there was a suggesting of using 2, or even 3 on that, so I did, still didn't help...
Thanks though!
Seems like a bug in the newer kernels. I have a RHOD400 and do not have this problem at all, but it seems a lot of people are using their CDMA devices on GSM networks.
I've had a lot of reports from folks that are doing that, so try an older kernel. You'll lose camera support, but in theory this bug will not be present. I'd like you to help narrow it down if you can, to which kernel it starts in.

small glitches here and there, (market sometimes won't install apps, downloads, but hangs on instal, and a few system crashes that reboot to no service) but otherwise smooth sailing!
sooooooo... tonight I've been getting a ton of system crashes, usually when on the market, complete with relaunching in airplane mode, which is annoying... Anyone else getting these, or is it just me? Also, as I said before, 4 out of 5 times the market won't install... It'll download fine, just hang on installing and never finish... it takes a full reboot to enable me to try again...
Been getting a few more "program unresponsive" dialogs than I would hope, and on my Hero I would have run a fix permissions from ROM Manager, but I can't get it to install... Any ideas?
I truly do appreciate the help you have been giving me!

I had this problem. Upgrading the CMR did not resolve the issue, only hid it for me (will just boot the phone normally).
Pulling the battery resolved the problem (Note: CMR was already updated, but phone kept rebooting. Also, Airplane mode would cause a reboot when disabling it).
(4/29/2011)
One other note, the problem keeps coming back even after removing the battery. Run this test and see if it is similar:
Switch phone into Airplane mode, wait 20 seconds, then switch back. Mine reboots almost every time, especially if it has been running for awhile.
I get the following line before it powers down when using this method and nearly every night it will reboot:

MIUI Data Disconnects - Data Collection Thread

As far as I am aware not a single one of the recent MIUI releases does not suffer from this issue. The purpose of this thread is to gather information towards identifying the offending process and potentially resulting in a fix!
The problem:
When you lose data connection the device does not reconnect data although still displays the data icon.
How to reproduce:
In real world usage you enter an area of low signal, a building, a lift or a certain carpark it can happen anywhere. To reproduce for testing, set device to 2G only. Load browser and load google.com. Switch now to 3G only and go back to browser and try to follow a link... No data. Toggle data off and on and hey it works again.
What we need:
Logcats of the error occurring. I will post mine up soon. I've done it just not near my pc at the moment. Please keep all discussion focused on the main point of this thread. Your rom dev is not really relevant to mention only version number. I.E 16.9.11

This should be intresting. I've had a chat with some smart guys at my ROMs thread about replacing miui files from old versions. Is the data dropout x10 specific?

Has anyone tried to add this line in the build.prop?
Code:
ro.ril.disable.power.collapse=1
or if it is already there change 0 to 1 ?

It seems to be only reported on x10 ports so far. I tried replacing some files but rom fails to boot. I still stand by my first idea that it is a problem in services.jar or framework.jar.

Sorry was not ignoring you. Was busy trying it and testing. Was already 1 so changed to 0. No luck!

Just tried, shows 0 on Erenz 16 build, root explorer change to buildprop didn't save.
Will look through a few miui props on my sd card.
Thank you!!

RIL power collapse is a state of very very low battery consumption from the radio, while the screen is off.
I found that line searching for tweaks and let some developers know about it (Trip, Cobrato, WB) a few months ago.
However, in practice, at least in MiUI ROMs, when the signal was lost, the phone could not regain it without a reboot.
This line is still in some ROMs and I think it shouldn't be as it may cause issues with signal and data.
So maybe try deleting it altogether or changing to 1.
Sorry if that didn't solve the issue, but, trust me, the line shouldn't be there anyway!
Removed it from prop, will be traveling tonight so I can test signal changes!
Swapped TripNdroid prop to Erenz 16 Miui, will see!

For people have trouble rootexplorer in miui then make a new file with text extension then save it and ad some line in resave it and now you can edit prop file and it be save correct after, this problem occur in miui, the soluce is to create a file and save it after that you could see xml and save tweak correctly
Nope.... Still data drop when traveling from 3g to edge service..
Will keep testing!!
Best regards,
Chris

I asked zdzihu how he fixed data disconnect
He send this
I switched to CM stable (7.0.3) which is compatibile with dhcp service called from ramdisk. That did the trick

Thanks for the update mate.
Hopefully this will allow the devs to somehow incorporate this fix into MIUI or to investigate the existing DHCP modules...

I was only asking why the other day that they use SE ROMs to port MIUI and not CM7 as a base like so many other MIUI ports. After all MIUI is based on CM7!
Sent from my X10i using xda premium
Out of all the MIUI roms here which are just mods? Is Erenz actually doing the porting himself? We need an actual dev not modder to attempt to base the port on CM7 as a base. Gingervillain mod r1 would be a good start.

My question is this, I have had data disconnects on MOST roms I have used this last year.........................
Living in a small town and traveling two days a week, I see everything from great 3G, H cell service to Edge only ( town I live in is Edge only ) and drop into roaming just sitting on my front porch even!!!
The first rom I ever encountered the data drop off was Trip's CM7 ( from back in the day...) Z's v1 CM7 has the issue, honestly, not sure if the 2.3.3 version does, I have a back up on my sd card I might restore to and see if it happens later this week...
I do know that even with stock se 2.3 I had the same problem....... ( again, my case is extreme )
So in a nut shell, WHAT ROM'S HAVE USERS HAD DISCONNECTS ON, NOT JUST MIUI, ALL ROM'S???????
Best regards,
Chris
P.S... Exactly, data disconnects and does NOT automatically reconnect....Ya have to toggle airplane mode or reclick allow data to reconnect...

Isn't the point that it doesn't reconnect. I experience data disconnects at work but they always RECONNECT when back in signal range on stock.
Every miui rom I have tried fails to reconnect after disconnecting (1.9.16 & 1.9.9). It's a real shame cause I love the miui inerface (except the launcher, I use GO launcher ex)
Tried tried all the 1.9.16 with dooms v05 unlocked kernel and they all fail to reconnect. No problem on wolfs roms v4,5&6.
I never got a disconnect/lack of reconnect on Z's CM7 with hotfix 003, or on Gingervillain mod or stock roms. Only these MIUI roms!

I didn't had such issues with tripnmiui 103 ROM!
Does some of you try to put module from Z03 to miui and see if it help?
Trip 03 ho ! yea ! It have this cause that for im on cm7 and this occur with all rom have the ****ing trap asshole new illusion semc kernel and for gain what ! ! Camera pfff MDR sucker **** SE,sorry for that but remember when you on 2.1 ,you have speed and no issue only camera so SE dev are not mad and the only thing they want is money and money or money again so for that they work hard and look 2 month and only one rom have full fonction and for now the problem is this data drop, but maybe im wrong another is the bootloder, the gain is what .......nothing appart problem

[Q] [ShockGensMod V5b][FXP-based ROMS] How to run a script after wifi connect?

Hi all,
I'm using ShockGensMod V5b ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2346871) on my LB Xperia U. Very good ROM, save for the infamouse wifi-sleep bug of almos all CM-ROMS.
Now, I know that using
iw phy phy0 wowlan enable any
the wifi sleep bug goes away, but one has to use this command after a wifi connection has been established. Is there a way to automatize this step? I.e. a way to execute a script containing this command when a wifi connection is established? Something like if-up on Linux?
Thank you for your help.
E.
Have you tried flashing a stock ics, 3 wipe, flashing rom and kernel?

Not really, I flashed starting from a stock-based ROM (after the three wipes). But the wifi-sleep bug happens on every CM-based ROM for my phone. Only the aforementioned command avoi the wifi to go off when the screen goes off. BTW, I'm on locked bootloader, I can not flash custom kernels.
I saw it's possible to detect in an app, why not like that?

Sorry, I don't understand what you mean. If you're talking about REGPON app and other similar solutions I'd prefer to avoid them, as they cause big battery drain.

I mean write one that thats all it does. Many apps do it, e.g. facebook
It don't even need an interface, so it could be a service or something, I'm not familiar with android programing yet so I don't realy know.

Well, I really just wrote very basic code in c++, until now, and it was a long time ago... I'll look into the link that you posted, maybe it's easier than I think.
Thanks

Android programs are written in Java not C++
Quite the same, but maybe someone who know can make it as a work around(really bad word).
All it needs to do is that and run that command.
@enban
I've started looking into it, might have something in a day or two.
Doesn this command need to run at startup too anyway? For my understanding, if it's an app it can only be auto started after boot time wifi may already be connected.

Well, first of all, thank you for your interest. On the other hand, for what I've read this command olnly works *after* the wifi has been connected (not just turned on) and then the wowlan state can survuve wifi on/off swithches (but not reboots). Maybe it works also if issued before the wifi connection , but I really don't know...
GOOD
VERY GOO IDEA
WHEN IM TURN ON WIFI.... IM ADD THIDS ON JAVA FILE
Code:
private void wifisleepoff() {
try {
Runtime.getRuntime().exec("iw phy phy0 wowlan enable any");
} catch (IOException e) {
e.printStackTrace();
}
}

I learn from everything I do so this an opportunity to write my first android program. Nothing much really. just few lines.
So I guess it wouldn't harm to run it upon boot wether wifi been started or not, assuming I won't get notification if it already was started when boot complete. Still early to know til I have it tunning.
Can you give me the output of this command line, this not compatible with my rom/device.
Also I assume it must be executed as super user and super user exists/active.

If it's just an app shouldn't it be "su -c iw phy phy0 wowlan enable any"?
And @enban said wifi connection must be esteblished not just wifi turned on, is it not so?

Ok, I'll send you something new in the nex hours. Now I'm at work and don't have ShokGensMod installed.
About the permissions, I think that if you want to write an app, it has to be executed as root. Not a great problem though, because every CM-based ROM that I've heard about is rooted. I have no idea what happens if we instead want a service to accomplish the same task.
I can help with the test phase

Nice! I'll test it ASAP, whe you publish it. On the other hand, if @chickeD has success in writing an app/service it could be useful for all people using CM-based ROMS.

Well I came up with something, not state of the art but you can try it.
Install and run the application once to grant root access.
It then would run a BroadcastReciever that run the command each time wifi connection is changed
run logcat .WifiConnectedReciever:d WifiConnectionService:d *:s
WifiConnectedReciever is the BroadcastReciever
WifiConnectionService is the app Activity.
output will look like:
D/WifiConnectedReciever( 2311): android.net.wifi.supplicant.CONNECTION_CHANGE
D/WifiConnectedReciever( 2311): Usage: iw [options] command
D/WifiConnectedReciever( 3524): android.intent.action.BOOT_COMPLETED
D/WifiConnectedReciever( 3524): android.net.wifi.supplicant.CONNECTION_CHANGE
The line in bold is what I get when wifi connected, you should see iw output.instead.

Can you explain what is exactly the wifi sleep bug?
I'm playing with this app with different notifications and I have set keep wifi on wifi to never and I notice there are no disabled notifications.
I'm not sure what sleep exactly means, but it not seems right.

Let me explain: in all the Cyano based roms the wifi gets disconnected when the phone is put to sleep; probably this is done to save energy, but as the problem is that all the wifi connections are dropped, so it is a bit too aggressive solution. The command that I wrote in the OP makes the wifi to stay connected even with the telephone in sleep mode.
This doesn't happen with stock or stock-based roms.

The problem with stock is that it keep wifi on even when I set it to disable it when sleep.
There are 3 options, always on, only when pluged and never, and it always stays on whichever I choose, kinda the opposit of CynogenMode but still a bug.
From your destcription you want to keep wifi on, not the connections realy.
Connections may change or not be avalable at all but you want the wifi to be on to be able to recconect when possible is that right?
Maybe I should execute this command when wifi is enabled instead?
