[Q] Archos 70 250gb and 20.000+ Mediafiles - Gen8, Gen9, Gen10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I just bought a archos 70 250gb and i bought it with the idea to have a backup of my music and pictures. But now i have about 24.000 media (pictures, music and some videos) files and the scanner is having a really hard time finishing the process and mostly seem to fail.
Is there a way to monitor where it goes wrong?
Is there a limit for the amount of files the library is able to scan?
Is there any other way to finish this process?
Now i can only play my files by a folder player (now using poweramp) and i can't watch all of the pictures because it fails on scanning them.
Now it's kind of useless to have 250gb if it doesn't work properly.
Are there other people that have the same issues, and might have a solution ?
Thanks in advance!
(i have searched, but couldn't find anything similar)

Received an answer from Archos:
Dear Customer,
The android operating system used by your Archos limits the number of files indexed, because of this limit some files like music, videos or pictures will not be added to the media library of the device and will not be visible when you browse the media library by Artist, songs, albums etc..
You can access to the files not indexed by using the file browser of the device, or by the “storage” item of the audio player (or video player).
This limit can’t be increased
Kind Regards,

So seems there is now way to solve it...
Does anyone know an android music player that builds its own library?
I know poweramp is trying to release one in april, but i would like one now since i want a good working device..

Mixergy does not build its own library, but you can point it to one or more folders and have it play those.

What error show up??
I have over 80GB Music putted into my Archos 70 250GB too, also have 30~40 videos in it.
First time I need to download '.nomedia tools' from Market, than tick all non media folder to apply .nomedia, then do a media scan again and let it run overnight, its done!

This has been covered before:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-925337.html
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-920675.html
.. but to be honest, that won't help you a lot unless you've got # symbols in your files.
I eventually managed to get all my music files scanned, so I think the 20000 limit is not quite as set in stone as they say. However, it took a couple of weeks of solid effort and some coding on my part (feeding music files one by one into the media scanner and leaving it running overnight several times, and over one whole weekend) - not something I can easily give to anyone else, and something I'd hate to replicate if I ever had to clear my media library.

[Q] Music on 16GB SDCard

I was exploring the possibility of using the GTab as a music player in my car. While trying this out, I discovered that when the music (WMAs) is on a 16GB (Class 2) card, GTab will not find the music. The music, however, is there and I can find and play the tracks via iFilemanger or Sniffer but usually will show as Unknown Artist/Album.
When those same music tracks are placed on a 4GB Card, GTab finds them just find and all details show in the music player. For S&Gs I ripped two albums to MP3 and loaded them onto the 16GB card, GTab finds them with no problem.
I have tried WinAmp, Zimly and the basic stock music player. Currently running TNT Lite 4.2.5.
Any thoughts or experiences would be appreciated.
Thanks
DH
Have you tried poweramp?
You change from library to file
Two day trial but i bought it sooner

I havent tried that but I suspect depending on how much music you have, that the scanner isn't finding the music or isn't done scanning when you attempt to play it. The scanning process seems to be universal somehow and most players depend on it. Maybe it builds a temporary database of some sort? No clue - devs would maybe know that.
I use several apps, Doubletwist, Mixzing and Winamp in addition to the Music player and of them all, only Doubletwist seems to work independently of the scanner and always sees and plays the music. There are times when the others will see but can't play anything.
Also, it's not so great a device for playing music long term as after a while for some reason you get some "time jumps" in music. Thats how I refer to it because it's definitely not skipping. It will jump to the previous song, then back to the one currently playing, then to the next, then all the way back to the one it started time jumping on. It does this usually when I suspect there's some clocking down going on inside. Never when I just start the music or soon after....generally hours later.
Good Luck.
Do you have a .nomedia file somewhere in the root of your 16gb card or in your music directory? It might be causing the gtab to skip the scan of your card. Not having the .nomedia file though will erase any videos on your card so i would suggest placing the .nomedia file in your video directory but keep it out of your music folder.
I was hoping to do something similar and use the gtab as a car music player and have a 500 GB portable drive plugged in to it to give me something similar to the Archos 5 internet tablet for music playback but I can't seem to find a good way to do this
I have never had good results with wma files. I suggest converting them to mp3. Mixing, stock, cubed, they always played them weird and had missing tags and data when viewed. Convert to native mp3 support and save yourself tons at hassle.
Oh and +1 for power amp. The full mixing board and pre amp along with the ability to save settings and apply settings to specific songs and albums is mind blowing. The album art downloader is sweet too. Realy hard to go back to any other player. They had my money within 2days of the trial period.

Thanks for the lead on PowerAmp, nice app and found the music right away. Interestingly, after adding nearly 8 gigs of music to the card, the libaray found all of the tracks.

BINGO!
Thank you.
Putting the .nomedia folder into a folder called Video cured my scan issues on the 16gb SD card.
I never had a problem with either of the VEGANtab versions, when I reverted back to Stock 4349 I had trouble.

Gonemad Music Player v1.1.9 stability?

I've installed Gonemad v1.1.9 on my Archos 70 (HDD model with a 1Tb disk upgrade). The problems I've had so far are:
- Didn't complete scanning of my music folder. I have about 90,000 tracks. The first scan completed, but only scanned around 50,000 tracks. I then deleted the library and started scanning again. It got to around 70,000 tracks then the GoneMad app crashed
- Jerky playback - when playing a playlist it pauses every few seconds. The stock Android Music app has no playback problems.
- Causing machine reboots - usually when first opening the app.
Has anyone else had these sorts of problems?
i mentioned in another one of your posts that the device was running out of memory during the scan process
your best bet to get help is to either email me ([email protected]) or post on my forums. If i didnt happen to do a google search on my app I would have not seen this thread. I respond to every email sent and look into every issue reported.
Anyway my next update has some stability fixes in it. It wont address the running out of memory (i'll see if i can do something for the update after this), but hopefully will make it a bit more stable
Thanks for the response. I tried to add this message to your post on XDA about v1.1.9 but the thread had been closed for some reason.
Does the work that you're doing on stability also address the playback issues?
by jerky do you mean it skips?
do you have the equalizer enabled?
does it skip if you select a single song from one of the library views and play it?
I mean there was a brief silence during playback every 30 seconds or so. I didn't have the equalizer enabled.
When I tried playback again this morning, both from a playlist and selecting songs directly from the library, I didn't get the problem. Maybe there was some sort of background task running yesterday which was causing the problem? Odd that it didn't affect the stock player though (which I tried at the same time). Maybe different buffering techniques during playback???
if the a70 is anything like the 5IT it has an onboard dsp chip that helps with decoding and other audio processing
the core audio engine in gmmp is all in software because they dont give access to that chip. If you disable the equalizer, gapless playback, and crossfade.. gmmp will use the default media player class that google provides in their api.. which on the a70 MIGHT take advantage of the dsp chip (there is no way to be sure). But you miss out on all the neat features of my app if you do that.
just pushed 1.1.10 to the market
i'll see if i can do something about the running out of memory issue you are getting when scanning in the next patch..
I was going to mention that you could easily get in contact with Gonemad over on the Archos forum, but I see he's alive and kicking here too. Good to see you here . Definitely great having your software.

Thanks for the feedback. If I can get this to scan my library and the keep the playback issues in check this looks like it could be a really good solution for me. Will put future feedback in the Archos forum as that seems to be a more popular place for this sort of query.

[Q] Sync music with Mediamonkey on the Prime (ICS)

Hello to all of you,
I am starting to use my Asus Prime (with Android 4.0.3) to listen to music, and for that I am trying to use and sync it with my PC music library, as I always did with my other player (Samsung P3), but I face some difficulties.
So any help would be appreciated....
Global context :
So, the source is my PC, on which I have all my music in FLAC (ripped all my CD some time ago, painful but efficient now).
I have Mediamonkey gold, updated latest version.
When I plug my prime, two devices (MTP) are detected :
#1- Prime internal storage
#2- Prime MicroSD
I want to put all my music on #2, in a /Music folder, and convert it in ogg on the fly during the sync.
To do so, I create a playlist in MM, and in the Sync properties of #2, I set the conversion choice, choose the playlist, and set the directory to use.
Situation:
- first, when I launch the sync, no matter if I have already music from a previous sync or not, it started re-writing ALL the music files on the prime (even if there are only 2 or 3 new files in the source playlist). As I sync more than 1000 music, this takes hours...
- then, for some reason I can't tell, it seems the sync is stopped at some point, because not all the music are then on the prime...only ~25%. As I launch the sync during the night (because it is very long), I don't see it happen. When I arrive in the morning, MM seems OK, the prime as well. Once I had a MM message telling that it could not write a few files (but only around 50... not 500...) and it does not tell why....
so you see my issues...
It takes for ages because it does not seem to see the deltas in the playlist...
It stops at some point, so I don't have all the music I wish...
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance...
Did you ever get a solution to this? I'm having the same problem. Everything I read says you should use USB Mass storage but the Prime does not support it.

[Q] Too Many Songs

I open up the music app on the phone (Music or Nokia Music) and it shows over 15,000 songs (long story of stupidity). None of the songs are on the phone though. If I try to play something, it'll hang for several minutes, play something for about 15s and then hang for several minutes again. I think it has something in cache that it tries to play.
How do I get the song list to force update? I can manually delete them from the phone but I I only live once and won't have that much time. The Windows Phone 8 app 'can see' the songs but then errors when trying to delete saying it can't find it. It doesn't have a select all anyway. WMP doesn't see any songs on it. Rebooting the phone doesn't force it to scan either.
Any ideas?
I miss the Zune days.......................
I personally would put all of your music in one easy to mange music folder, get rid of duplicate entries, and make sure you delete all the songs you have on your device through windows explorer. Then, copy and paste the music folder to your device. You will be able to select all or pick and choose copying music this way. It would be the same way you copy music to a thumb drive if that clarifys it for you.
There is no music

There is no music on the device at all. Due to the Itunes / WMP folder structuring hanging the transfers (I just use windows explorer normally). There was no folder structure. Only one folder with 32,000 songs. I then copied about 5600 to the device. THAT turned out to be too much as the device didn't like only having 500k of space left. So I deleted the folder, and tried something smaller.
This went on for a few times only to find out that the songs were not getting removed from the library when the files were removed from the device.
Personally i think wp has a problem with files and music.
i struggled a lot getting the device showing everything that was in the windows8 app.
had duplicate entries of self copied tracks, had problems with album arts,. albums sometimes have just a few songs.
deleting device in xbox.com and unsync didnt help much.
somehow the music i copied on the phone on some day just didnt show up in fthe explorer anymore. so does the hidden album folder.
at the end i tried a hard reset and bricked the phone... didnt do anything appart form playing around with the music folder and app.

I miss the Zune days as well, I hate that I can no longer use it to sync all my content. I really hope they change this in the future, because the Windows Phone App is terrible and doesn't work half the time.
That being said, all the songs you see on your phone aren't actually on your phone. It is pulling them from your Zune account and what is now called your Xbox Music Cloud Connection.
Open up an artist and take a look at the track list - you'll notice a small icon indicating it isn't local. (Attachment 1)
It is streaming it from their servers, this is why it takes long to load, then buffers.
If you wish to disable the device from automatically showing all of these songs, in the Music + Videos app, go into settings (Attachment 2) and disable Xbox Music Cloud Collection. (Attachment 3)
That was it, mostly

That was it. I didn't notice the hidden folders. After removing the contents from them, there were only about 100 songs left in the list which I could then manage via the application to delete.
Fresh music list, starting over.
Thank you
be carefull with this things. bricked my phone with it.. deleted the album folder to get the list new..
also got problems with the cable staying connected and refreshing the data in the folders.
just got everything showing in win8 and phone now.. despite the album covers
Also if you have Windows 8 ... music is uploaded to the cloud and can be streamed to the phone... it isn't perfect, but I have several albums that have just showed up... I think part of that has to do with where it was purchased.
does it update any mp3 you add into the music app?

Yeah it updates everything but the 'collection' tile inside of nokia music. That still had thousands.
I reloaded all the music and it seemed to have got lost again. It seems to work fine until you pass around 2000 songs and then duplicates start showing up everywhere.
Oh well, lesson learned.
didnt know that.. i have thousands of mp3 on a media server in the basement .. but cant bind it into music folder anyways because the network drive does not support indexing

SMB Movie Directory Lister?

Hi Guys,
I had a thought, whilst trying to look through the Google PlayStore for a DNLA Server app to play some files both off my Android Device and via the NAS Server I have connected to my Router. But unfortunately couldnt find a decent enough App in the PlayStore that catered for every feature I want, and thought...
1) Wouldnt it be AWESOME if the CyanogenMod team include a built in DLNA Server into their current roms??
and,
2) (This is where I am hoping a talented Android Programmer viewing this post may step in...) It would be really useful to have an App that can scan your NAS (or whatever other storage you have), and then list all the files (especially movies) as to:
a) What folder they are in
b) What name the file is called
c) How big that file is in size
d) What format, codec, and resolution
... and so on!!
Some Apps do show some of this information, but not all of it... And so wondered if anyone could code such an App?? Sure it wouldnt take a talented programmer too long to write a file scanning App that could create/output to txt, csv, html reports..??
Does this sound like a good idea??
Cheers, Lister
Anyone?
hi mate,
in wich form do you serve the media on your nas?
You mentioned that you have searched for dlna progs on google play, whats with BubbleUPnP?
Its working fine for me. Or do you have a smb connection to your nas and just want to scan there for movie files?
In this case wouldnt a good file manager be enough?
Hi @clonednull,
Thank you for your reply, and interest....
1) Not sure what you mean by "which form do you serve your media on Nas" ?
My media is various movies (DVDs mainly) that I've ripped in MP4 or MKVs of TVs and Films, stored on a QNAP NAS for easier viewing via my TV (networked) but also on Mobile devices around the house....
2) DLNA Apps on GooglePlay, much like uPNPBubble
True, there are many Apps on the PlayStore that support DLNA, but I guess I'm being a tad fussy here.. I am looking for something that has the looks, elegance and features, such as 3D carousel view of media that can be flicked through, but then clicked and pushed to DLNA devices. I am looking for an App that can push local (on my Android device) as well as networked media (such as my NAS) too the TV. But it all comes down to looks, and so many Apps either look dated, or the ones that look good dont work with local content, and only networked content...
3) SMB Network connection to NAS
Not too sure on the networking side of things, just know I have a QNAP NAS, that works fine when connecting/viewing via the TV. However an App such as "FX Explorer" on the PlayStore views the NAS connection as a SMB.
However the App I am looking for, to connect to my NAS via an Android App... I would like it to be able to scan the directories, count how many files/videos are in each directory, be able to tell me their file sizes, the file formats, their dimensions (ie: 720, 1080, 352 and so on) and then if possible, be able to export this data to the SD Card as a report, beit txt, csv, html and so on....
Basically so I can audit my data/content, so easy to browse and so on....
I did start to look at File Managers, rather than SMB scans or Movie Collection Apps... But cant find a single App on the AppStore than can scan my OWN content, and list it in the format that its recorded in and so on....
If you know any Apps, I would be very grateful...
Many thanks, Lister
Lo @Lister Of Smeg!
Aha so you want a viewer / streamer / dlna client + server / media list scanner + exporter for all specific file informations and this all should be wrapped in a fancy 3d look.
I'm afraid what you are searching for will not be found in one app.
As before mentioned i personally like BubbleUPnP for dlna content and i use the default file explorer (wich is Solid File Explorer) to search arround in my smb content.
If you want a good looking movie library of your smb content check out apps like MovieFlow
A nice looking video player with upnp and smb support is also Archos Video Player
Last but not least you could try out XBMC for android. It looks nice, has a lot of features and also plugin compatibility for many things but it is somehow "overdressed" for most situations.
Check them out at their Homepage: xbmc.org
Hope i could help a little bit mate and wish you all best! :highfive:
Hi @clonednull,
Apologies for the delay in getting back to you.... and thank you so much for your reply!!

Indeed, lol.... Yeah I appreciate Im not going to find summit that ticks all those boxes in one App.... :crying: But that wasnt really what I was after, I'm kinda after 2x seperate Apps...
1) A DLNA Player/Server, that can play both local content on my phone, as well as videos found on my NAS. With a CoverFlow kind of interface...
So many of the Apps will not play locally or if do, they pass the playing feature onto another 3rd party App installed. Or they dont have a very good GUI on them, and have something like that of a Gingerbread App... lol
I've tried the Archos Video Player out before, and I think that is awesome... Especially on a Google TV Stick. I bought my folks one of these for Christmas, and have it pointing to my NAS with all my films and TV shows... Looks beautiful and plays beautiful too...
Also tried XMBC, but on previous hardware it didnt really run to well as it wasnt designed for it, and so had a lot of crashes, but it was fairly early into the development days... Looks a lot better now on my phone...
Tried MovieFlow, had a few issues with that... Didnt really want to connect too well I think, and I think it maybe because of the English Database issues its having at the moment (or at least thats what the App says....)
Solution: I think maybe I'll ask the MoboPlayer team, if there is any likely hood of them adding a DLNA client into their App sometime in the future. As that App can play anything and everything, has a lovely interface for local stuff... and especially the CoverFlow. Just needs to add SMB scanning and DLNA output and we're sorted
2) SMB Directory Movie Lister, basically any App (Movie or FileManager based) that can scan SMB / NAS devices, read all the video files on them, create a report on: Folder Location, Name, File Size, Screen Dimension Size, Format, Totals.... and then be able to Output it to a file (beit Cloud based, or local SD Card)
I am really surprised nothing like that exists out there, despite how popular NAS storage is for movies, and even though some Movie Apps can identify such detailed info when scanning files on these Servers, why cant any of them do Reports, say Movie Collectors/Audits...??
But thank you for all your help, very much appreciated... as always!!! I shall update this post if I hear anything back from MoboPlayer team...
Cheers, Lister
