So, i've had the eris since Dec '09...been rooted for a long time...played with many ROMs...lots of root-req apps, etc etc. i'm pretty proactive and i pay attention...but this one has me stumped:
about 5-6 days ago my battery started draining fast as hell...looking at what was using the battery it said Android OS, Display, then Android System. everything else was insignificant. right now stats (47m 22s since unplugged):
Android OS 49%
Display 13%
Android System 9%
that is HUGE compared to any time i've ever looked before. i'm running KaosFroyo v38 (complete fresh flash, though this problem started while using v37). List of apps...those with a star i can remember have updated recently:
chrome to phone
music junk*
SetCPU (set to 19200 - 604800, profile of screen off 160 - 480)
snesoid
switchpro widget
tapatalk pro
wireless tether
quick boot
usaa mobile
tfln +widget
touiteur (and premium)
Premotedroid
Winamp
adfree
the weather channel
skype
wiimote controller
shazam*
GPS Status & toolbox
astro file manager
my verizon*
launcherpro*
flex dialer lite
qwiklist voice
chandroid
facebook for android*
google voice
gmail
google maps
street view on google maps
my best guess is the problem is LauncherPro but i don't know how to monitor an app like that. any ideas?
I would check your network usage. If an app is constantly sending/receiving data, then it'll drain your battery pretty quick. I don't think it would be LauncherPro. I've been using the paid version for a long time now and have no problems with it.
Get spare parts. It will give you a more accurate look at the battery usage.
Sent from my Floyo Tazz using XDA App
Under battery history, in spare parts, I selected network usage and one of the bars is named "0". When I select it, the history portion of the app force closes. This "0" app is the big drain.
Sent from my FroyoEris using Tapatalk
I've seen the "0" mystery app before and couldn't figure out what it was. It wasn't draining my battery though.
Does anyone know of a way to prevent the wifi from restarting itself. I am having the data connection issue and turn wifi off but it is back on again a little while later.
Are you using any battery/app management apps? Greenpower?
No battery management app and even after a factory reset I did yesterday for a different issue, it is still happening.
Bump... Any ideas>
can you describe the problem a bit more please ?

I have the same problem with mine. Wifi keeps restarting or sometimes hangs at authenticating. Very frustrating and makes wifi connection completely unreliable. I dont have any battery management app or no task manager either except for default one that came with Atrix. I use inbuilt battery app in "nighttime saver" mode thou.
-sekhar
I will turn wifi off through settings and later, sometimes minutes, sometimes hours, I will notice that it has restarted. This is without reboot. At first I deleted all the previous connections, but it still did this. I have even done a hard reset, flashed back to stock and I continue to have this issue. When it is on I have the data connection issue seen on multiple forums where I have to reboot my phone to get a data connection back (not calls, no sms, no email). This happens even though I have never reset up any wifi locations.
Any other specific questions?
BTW, I have the battery saver that came on the phone in performance mode.
try this to see if it helps. go to settings>wireless and networks>wifi settings> press settings button> advanced> turn wifi sleep policy to never.
maybe that will stop it from turning off.
I actually want it to STAY off when I turn it off. I would love to have it on sometimes but since that crashes my data connection, I want to keep it off for now til the fix for that is out.
Also, it seemed worse before I installed GingerBlur, but it still happens, just less often.

Did you flash the new radio after going to 2.3.4?

May or may not help!
I flashed att pudding full 183 then cherryblur 0.5d...I don't think that either of those flashed new radio...
I believe I have N_01.77.15P now...going to update to latest version.
I believe this only affects the cellular radio, but I after doing some research it seems if you are going to be on 2.3.4 you should upgrade to this one..

Basis:
Wifi always on causes SOD. There are numerous anecdotal reports that setting wifi to be off with screen off reduces/stops SOD.
Plan:
Utilize DroidWall to limit wifi use by applications and find out which applications appear to be safe by selecting specific applications and seeing if SOD occurs.
Why:
Even though turning off wifi with screen off saves battery, some people would like their nook to be pushing/updating with wifi when it is in sleep, getting emails, messages, etc.
What you can do:
1) Download/Install DroidWall
2) Using WHITELIST, check off one or two applications that you utilize the most.
3) Turn _ON_ firewall
4) Update the rules whenever you add or remove apps.
5) Change your wifi setting to always on (advanced options under wifi settings * need to hit menu button to see this option in cm7)
Apps so far tested without problems:
Email (stock)
Improved Email
Dolphin HD 6.0
Epocrates
Market
Amazon Appstore
Possible SOD related App
Downloads, Media Storage, DRM Protected Content Storage, Download Manager (this is one heading in DroidWall)
Apps so far tested that _might_ cause SOD:
*from posts, possibly Latitude.
Testing
K9 Mail
RoadMap
Rom Manager
Netflix
Executive Assistant+
Please post your findings.
I will update this post as we get more information.
Thanks.
DroidWall did not solve it for me... in fact it wouldn't even run on my Nook.
It works for me. At first, I forgot to turn on the firewall, then I forgot to update rules when I changed things.
So far, I have the following for access to wifi:
Market
Appstore(amazon)
Dolphin Browser HD
Epocrates RX
Email
Improved Email
I just turned on Appstore and Market for the first time tonight, so I'm not sure how well it will do.
I use my nook all the time at work, probably turn it on from lockscreen sleep about 15-20 times over 10 hours, so if I don't get a SOD by the next day, I will put market and amazon appstore on the safe side.
Interesting development:
I got my 1st SOD today.
Please note my active programs at this time.
Please note that it occured after I started the combined service noted in the OP:
Downloads, Media Storage, DRM protected Content storage, Download Manager in the Droidwall options.
I will remove this option (which makes it impossible to update market aps for that matter) and see if the SOD doesn't happen for the next 3 days. The restart it and see if I get SOD again.
If this is the cause, then I should be able to show that SOD occurs with it active.
nm
10chars.
Using white list and only allow full-time wifi access to "linux kernel" and "apps running as root"
Never have more than one or two other apps besides these access to wifi when in sleep mode. I never allow gapps full-time wifi access and that goes double for market.
Where did this idea come from? *ducks and runs*
I do believe drm checks are screwing with the nook.

Just wanted to pop in and say thanks for the very useful testing.
Okay, update - I left the downloads/media store etc on the last 3 days and haven't had another SOD. So I'm not sure what to think about that. I will move forward and enable K-9mail today and see how things go over the next couple days.
here's my take on it: it has to do with the router, or some configuration of it.
I have a wrt54gs v1.1 at home and a wrt54g v4 at work, both running tomato software, both with Cox internet.
I get CONSISTENT SODs at work, as a side note the router is a also crashing for an unknown reason. the two don't happen at the same time. I've been trying to grab logs for weeks can't explain it or the fact the nook NEVER SODs at home.
the nook can run at home for days perfect, once at work it can SOD 6 times a day or more.
there has to be more going on than an errant app.

Can you clarify what you mean by "reduces/stops" ? Does it reduce it or does it stop it ?
Also, I've been away for awhile - is this the only SOD cause that is not fixed in the current CM7 nightlies code ?
Thanks !!
I've had SOD at home and at work. It's possible we both might have a problem.
I'm currently sitting at 36 hours of up time with the below white listed items. Without droid wall enabled I would consistently get SOD. I am working towards white listing all items one by one to see what causes a SOD. I have discovered that if I white list Google Maps I will get a SOD. However, until I white list all other items I am not prepared to call Maps as the cause of my SOD.

Thanks, if you go without SOD for 3 days straight like this, I will add these problems to the safe list.
I only get it once I run the Pandora app, close it, and after some time in background, sod.
My experience has been that using the Green Power app in Market keeps my NC alive for a week or more of light use and completely stops SOD. When I disabled Green Power last night, SOD happened, so I was happy to see this thread. It is definitely related to wifi.
For anyone that wants a quick workaround, I do recommend this app because it tells your NC to check wifi on regular intervals so I still get notifications / emails but wifi is not on all the time which saves battery.
WPA_SUPLICANT task
Hi,
I have been getting SOD. My workaround has been to manually turn off
WiFi before I turn screen off - this seems to have worked.
I didn't have them under CM7.03. I have been getting them on all
the nightlies I have tried since them, currently using N146
Mentioned above is an app called GreenPower, I thought I would try this.
I still get SOD with it. (I think I just used the default settings)
This time after powering back on, I looked at my SystemPanel app traces.
It looked like the (task?) WPA_SUPPLICANT was using 100% CPU sometime after
I turn off the display.
Attached are 2 screen captures from System Panel:
One with last 2 hours, showing recent 100% WPA_Supplicant CPU usage SOD
One showing 8 hours of apps running with most CPU usage.
Note System panel is showing device charge constant, but after reboot,
charge is much lower (last night it discharged totally)
Also attached are two alogcat captures - not sure if they have useful data
or not though.
One from SOD earlier in the day
One from recent SOD captured in screen SystemPanel capture above.
Hope this helps...

I tried Green Power and my nc hasn't had a SOD since you posted this. Thanks for the recommendation. I used to get SOD on a daily basis.
I used to get sod even with green power. So I set 2 profiles with tasker one for wifi off when screen is off and one for wifi on when screen is on. No sod for a week.

Two questions. Using Green Power, my wifi does not connect when I wake it up with the nook button. Secondly, when I try to wake up my bluetooth Xoom keyboard by pressing the connect button several times, it will sometimes reboot. Anybody having similiar problems?

There is a problem in every 2.3.5 ROMs (I tested everyone of them...even gingerdx v13).
The problem is due to "google maps" app...
If the app isn't freezed (by titanium) or unistalled, the problem persist.
The problem starts when open "maps". After that, some processes of "maps" start to drain battery....the only thing to do in order to temporally solve this problem, is reboot the phone.
I don't know if is in the app itself or in the way that the ROMs manage it...but It's present and It's a major and annoing bug.
Please try to solve it.

I don't know...I had froyo ROMs before...no problems with maps!
yup even i am having huge battery drains on the gingerdx rom...
i tried freezing a lot of apps, but was not able to narrow down the causative app..
I figured out that i get a lot of wakelocks by time service
MauriF , how did u figure app that google maps was causing the drain?
I don't have battery drain problems (never had since I logged out of Latitude).
I also tested EVERY rom posted (froyo and gingerbread) and they all had similar battery duration, and no unexplained drains...
Im on ginger dx v13, I found if you listen to music and then stop the music player, some services are still running and it kills your battery so I just reboot the fone and its fine, I also froze dps manager and google maps. If you read the origanal topic on ginger dx it tells that the music player drains your battery. People must except that there will be bugs.
Sent from my U20i using xda premium
The music player bug IS a bug.
The maps problem isn't. Yes Maps drains the battery but its because you have done one of the following:
Have GPS on
Have enabled an app to see your location: could be browser, latitude, search etc
Have turned on 'My Location' in Settings -> Locaton and Security
Have allowed maps to cache in background: check by opening maps -> more -> cache settings
Android needs to open apps to all of these things, its not the ROM as far as i can see.
Sorted it out for me on GingerDx v11
x drsood,
Using Titanium i freezed maps = no battery drain
enabling it = battery drain (I mean 3% each 5 minutes)
...even if the app is not started.
maybe the problem is one that Dan is saying! I need to check..
x Dan,
I charge battery than I'll check! Thank You very much!!

i have the "maps" as well as "dsp manager" frozen...still i have this battery drain...i know its not a rom problem coz many have reported that they hav excellent battery life, but i cant figure out the app causing all these drains
unistalled "maps 5.9.0" (always some services active...huge battery drain), installed "maps 5.0" (no services active!)
Now I test battery again!
Yeah that's exactly i want to say Maps drain battery so much only 3 hours my phone use up all !
mmm...it's not only maps....
this night in 7h mt battery is at 41% :-/
Check whats running services then. Settings -> Applications -> Running Services
Will probably tell us your problem

i dont have maps but stiil battery drain
and minicm6 (2.2.9) only drains around 7% battery during night
Thank you for usefull info.
I unistalled maps and now my battery last 3 times more. I was impressed.
I found that, using D4Kernal, the battery life extends quite a bit. I got a whole 24 hours out of the phone yesterday which is a first.
just a suggestion
In my experience excessive battery drain can be caused by 3 causes:
1)Apps running in background
Some apps consume more battery than others. the best way to see in my experience is install apps atleast 12H apart so that you can tell which app is causing drain. Google maps process does run forever in background. To stop pit, Go to settings--> applications-->manage applications-->(click on Maps APP)-->click Force Stop. This has to be done everytime you reboot your phone. For a permanent thing, try freezing in Titanium
2)Battery callibration:
While Li-Poly batteries like the BST38 in the x10 minipro dont need full depth charging, the battery measurement needs it.
Try this(need root)
Charge phone to 100%
(Install "Battery callibration" app from Market and click "Callibrate battery")
OR
(Boot into CM Recovery and erase Battery stats)
Once Battery is 100% charged, unplug and discharge to 0%(If you dont have patience for this turn on google maps with GPS, turn on Wifi and play music on your loudspeaker. My battery drained in 1.5 hrs with this usage )
Once Battery is discharged to 0(i.e phone shuts off), Recharge to 100% and use as normal.
After doing this I get around 70+ Hrs of standby in GingerDX v013. This process NEEDS to be done everytime you install a new custom ROM.
3)Ruined Battery:
If you have too much drain in ALL ROM's...including the stock ROM, OR, none of the above steps work, then the battery is probably faulty. There's nothing you can do about it but get a new one
All the best!
EDIT:
4) Network signal strength:
If the signal strength by the service provider is low, your phone will try to amplify it to achieve higher clarity. Unfortuntely this consumes higher power. Your body also absorbs some radiation hence requiring even higher amplification. My recommendation is unless you are moving around, keep your cell outside (On your desk or something). You'll get slightly better signal strength plus if some studies are to be believed you'll be more fertile and smarter and your heart will be healthier too
Hey,is it makin any big difference btween stock and D4's Kernel?

Get 'CpuSpy'
and check if your phone goes into deep sleep.
Also try this, Everytime instead of locking your screen, put the phone to sleep mode (I like doing this thru notification power control widget)
Im running HydrogenICS with Siyah, never had troubles with that kernel with any rom. No batterydrain or anything. But after the new FB app update its been draining my battery. Plus ive added exchange to my mails now and moved my Gmail from Gmail app to the stock mail app. Theres no push alternative there for the gmail so its on 1hr update.
Any thoughts? First day running this rom+kernel combo. But usually after a day like this, its supposed to be at 70%. It was quite hot during music playing with poweramp (no wifi connection available). I usually use home button to exit apps, not back button.
In short:
1. Facebook app drain, version 1.9.0 with camera app and messenger app.
2. Exchange drain.
3. Whats causing it? or how to prevent it!
fb is active app so itsrunning in the background....well u can stop using the apps tht drains, avoid alwayz using home bttn ,instead use task manager an kill unwanted apps....and turn off auto sync
To be honest that isn't normal unless when you go to facebook application and click menu and settings. Then you will find a screen where it tells you when it will refresh, e.g. "every 30 minutes, hour, 2hours, 3 hours and 4hours. So if its 30 minutes, I believe that's what could be causing the drain.
If all of that doesn't fix it, try uninstalling the application and installing it again (if you haven't done so already :])
Have a good day :] And good luck with the battery drain :/
