Beta Testers needed - Fascinate Android Development

I'm looking for a few good men (and women) to beta test for me. The last couple releases have been utter disasters for me. While stuff works for me, I send it out and it doesn't for others.
So I need 2-3 good testers.
Requirements:
Must be proficient with adb. Example: "Please adb push this file to your sd card"
"please send me a logcat"
If you can do that, you are perfect.
Must be proficient and not scared of using Odin and/or Heimdall.
Must be somehwhat regularly available.
I need both voodoo and non voodoo testers.
Please post here if interested.

I can help out. I can do adb and odin...Not too sure about heimdall. But I can learn with it. Only thing is I can't do it until later in the days. But I can discuss it in IRC whenver.
Oh, I am available all the time if you choose me I will give you my gtalk info to get ahold of me. I can generally access my computer almost all of the time.

Would be happy to help out with nonvoodoo releases.
I have adb set up and know the basic commands and all that good stuff.
I use Odin all the time, haven't used hiemdall, but im a quick learner.

I'll test, though my availability can vary.

I can do all of the above as well as build things if needed,I would just need the commands to do it.

I can do all of those things with ease. Have plenty of free time so availability won't be an issue. I would be more than happy to help out in any way I can.

I'm game. I've been a flashaholic since my Apache days and I flash your stuff the second I see it anyway.
I normally run Voodoo.

I'm here as a Voodoo tester. I'm good after 3:30 PM pretty much always.

Pick me pick me pick me!!!
it would be an honor to help you out
i know how to use adb but im not sure how to send logcat...
if u can briefly explain to me once i'll understand.
ALL I HAVE IS TIME!!

thanks guys. because of you and of course adryn, many people can get cool stuff.
if i knew adb i would help so ill put that on my list of things to learn.

hey adrynalyne, dont think you will remember me but i know you because you tried to make a telus rom for omnia i910 thx for the try. Now that i got that unbrickable phone, i'll be happy to help you out ^^ as long as i can connect my phone to telus band again ( using 850 mhz here).

Pick me!!! Pick me!!!!

*raises hand* I'll volunteer for voodoo testing
I haven't used ADB much but nothing a google search can't fix, plus this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=875963&highlight=adb+tutorial)
Odin and I are very good friends
I may not sit on irc every day but send a quick text or e-mail and i can usually get on.

if you need a voodoo test dummy hmu. im down. im around all the time or whateva

I can do both anything needed testing will be done asap

I'm available. I have 2 Fascinates: stock EB01 + voodoo and a sc latest flavor. I've been flashing various ROMs since my Droid 1 on my Mac and very capable of ADB.

Sign me up too for voodoo. Available any time of day, life is slow lol

At this point, you have plenty of people willing. I'll just add myself to that list. I have become very fluent in adb, and Odin. And just ROMs and Android in general. My availability for the next couple of weeks is pretty constant, so I am always available, and I am more than willing to explore, test, tweak, and to give you feedback and my opinions.

Isn't that like saying "I'm not the racist type, but...."
Of course it's unnecessary. But there's nothing else to do at the moment on here. It's a little frustrating to see the work in the other variant forums, and to hear crickets and hopes in here.
I KNOW incredible people are hard at work right this minute to fix it, but....
It's looking like we will be last to see Voodoo, last to see Froyo, and last to see CM.
I'm not the whining type, but.....
I'm growing restless. lol.
If you're (the general you, not calling anyone out) interested in development, I suggest joining the IRC channel #samsung-fascinate on freenode. This is where you'll get the most up to date information. (For example, we were testing CWM recovery with Koush long before the first post showed up here).
If you'd like a small project to get you in the swing of things, and you're slightly familiar with linux and can get a VM up and running, you could always download the source from Samsung and learn how to compile your own kernel. I've seen a few people in the channel go from knowing pretty much nothing to getting their kernels compiled. Even if you can't get a linux VM up and running, maybe someone in the channel could help you with that.
Obviously thanks to Samsung, the kernel won't boot, but going through the process will help broaden your knowledge and give you some insight into Android and Linux in general. There's plenty to learn, and there's a wide range of people there with varying levels of expertise.
There are a number of us who have been at this since day 1, and since we "know" each other a little better, we often communicate directly between ourselves. If you pop in the IRC channel and don't see anything, don't take that to mean that no work is being done.
There are some major obstacles to be overcome here, and Samsung didn't do us any favors. We're working a number of things right now, getting the kernel source fixed, AOSP, voodoo, etc.. It will take time, but we're getting there.

if you notice i did not flame you... I could have, but i respect you as a xda member... I just said this was unnecessary, because it is. Like namebrandon said, join the irc channel, but starting a topic like that, then just saying some nonsense, really doesnt need to be done... Your a senior member, we need to be a good influence for the new people. Like i said, i've seen you help out and i respect that; but lets try to keep the Android Development to Android Development. If it's something like this atleast file it in general.

I'm one of those people... First kernel i've ever compiled.
and/or you could harass samsung for the kernel signing keys, no coding ability required.
Jesus people. I'll post a ROM if it'll stop all these nonsense threads.
Voodoo kernel is the works also. Coding helps development, not complaining and being sarcastic.

New 2.2 rom build help

I would like to start learning how to put roms together. I would like to start with developing a 2.2 rom compiled from galaxy s I900 source. Is there anyone here that can point me in the direction of a good tutorial on how to start? I have been using other peoples work for like a year and a half and would really like to create rather than use. I am a total noob when it comes to developing so any help would be great. thx
Go here;

Good luck!
You can't develop a rom using only kernel source.

In all seriousness do you stay apprised in any way shape or form of android related news our just enjoy smearing the forums with your illinformed ramblings and negativity? Speak of what you know and don't be so eager to dismiss anyone with the fortitude to increase their own knowledge base on an operating system such as this when its these people who we all depend on to better our experience with said operating system. As it is these people for whom google turns to when it comes to ideas on how to better their future stock releases. Thank you for the vote of confidence.

You do realize fallingup has written more android code than your phone can hold?
The reason they seem testy is they(actual developers) have been spending all their free time trying to get Samsungs crappy code to compile, and every couple of hours some one asks for an easy how to guide for porting Froyo.
Spend some time reading the forums. Find out what is already being done, then learn the basics of rom development. THEN, ask intelligent questions on how help develop Froyo for our phones.
Asking for an easy way to cook roms is the equivalent of the kid in the back seat asking "are we there yet" every 30 seconds. If you really want to learn how to cook roms, try a couple easy ones with the kitchen I linked to, then learn how to work on roms without the kitchen. Then work on Froyo. There is no easy way.
I didn't ask for an easy how to thinking that I could have it done by tomorrow or even that I could figure it out at all. I simply asked for a starting point and stated in the OP that I am a know nothing when it comes to developing. As far as my last post I meant no disrespect to fallingup in fact it was my mistake to quote his post. I actually intended on quoting jt1134 so, to fallingup, I have used your stuff many times and have nothing but respect for what you do. I apologize for the misquote. I in no way think myself to be super genius to the 10th power nor do I believe that I can actually do anything worth while with this code. I'm just bored and want to learn. I'm also an Android addict.
P.S. Thank you for the link. Also you'll notice in my last post now that you know of my misquote, that I am actually 100% behind people like fallingup. I would never knowingly give a verbal bashing like that to him.(god I feel like **** now)
You meant to quote ME? Wow.
In all seriousness, and no disrespect intended, I'll explain a few things.
The code Samsung provides is NOT the full OS. Not even close. It's the kernel, plus a few android packages. In most cases, the android packages are EXACT copies of the code that has been available from Google for months, and in other cases has one line changes referencing a Makefile that doesn't exist. This is no way gets us any closer to a 2.2 rom other than the kernel. What we REALLY need is a working 2.2 ota build or leaked package to move forward any faster. That is MUCH more important than the garbage that Samsung has been releasing to us.
If you are a noob to development, then GOOD LUCK. If you are an advanced developer with intimate knowledge of android, then GOOD LUCK. There are quite a few of us working on aosp ports to the SGS phone series, and so far it has not been completed for a SINGLE device.
There are no guides that will explain exactly what is needed to accomplish this goal. There is no one who is going to hold anyone else's hands through it. Hacking is a meritocracy, meaning you'll get help with advanced topics when you show you have done your research, put effort into resolving the issue on your own, and ask intelligent and informed questions that give exact details of the situation.
If you would like to continue to show a poor attitude, then go for it on your own. Wait for us to release a working rom. If you would like to actually learn and invest some time in moving forward, the GO FOR IT, you are VERY WELCOME to do so. Read the porting guides written by google, try some stuff out, and come over to IRC and get your hack on.
I'm tired. I'm generally a nice guy, sorry!

Now I have the right person quoted. Did you even read my post??? Let me repeat a key part so that you can understand and maybe you can stop battering the new guy.
"I didn't ask for an easy how to thinking that I could have it done by tomorrow or even that I could figure it out at all. I simply asked for a starting point and stated in the OP that I am a know nothing when it comes to developing."
I have admitted to my know nothingness. I simply want to learn. You could respond with something such as Galaxy S 2.2 is not a good place to start the learning process. Or you could have left it alone entirely and just thought that the link posted by "sgtmack" was sufficient enough. After all it did answer the exact question I asked. You might know a lot more about code and code writing than me but you have to admit, "your kind of an arrogant ass!" Now I would like to end this banter by allowing you to respond in whatever way you deem necessary. I myself will give this no further thought as I would like to move on now. That and I believe I have made myself look bad enough now.
As for fallingup and sgtmack, thanks for the hard work and helpful advice.
yutzyscott, do you not realize that jt and dirrk are the ones that got us the voodoo kernel? do you know they are the ones that got the kernel booting in the first place using samsung's ****ty source code? without jt, there would be nothing to build a rom around. wtf do you mean ill-informed when jt probably knows more than most people about developing for this phone? pay some ****ing respect for people that deserve it.
Yeah I do but, when this whole thing started I did not read who the post was by but, rather I just read the post. While I appreciate his work and am actually using it, my pride was hurt and its hard to interpret someones tone on a forum. I was under the impression in the beginning of all this that it would be known that I downloaded the 2.2 ota pushed to the original galaxy s and not the source they have been working with and making leaps and bounds with despite the road blocks. I was interested in learning how to port it (the ota I mean) rather than just sitting on my hands waiting to use anothers work. Chances are that I would never even come close to understanding what I was looking at but, I had to try. Now I'm sorry I asked. I quit...I was wrong, sorry! Leaving it to the experts. I'll go back to helping people with simple basic problems on droidforums.net and continue being an expert on using the real experts work.
This doesn't need to be turned into a flame thread. So here's my advice: join us on irc.freenode.net #samsung-fascinate and ask questions there. learn how to build a kernel, and maybe try to find out how exactly to port roms from other devices. Its a tough business, especially when we don't even get working kernel source from the manufacturer.
There are a ton of people that are working on the galaxy s phones, trying to get AOSP and the like on them. These phones are quite different than any other android phones, just with the way that the hardware / partitions are, so there is a lot to work through and document. Once one of the SGS phones is running aosp, im sure the others wont be too far behind. I wouldn't bother porting another crappy samsung rom, cause it will still have a lot of the crap that we are trying to get rid of by running aosp.
Thanks. And to jt, im sorry for being an argumentative ****. Thanks for all your hard work and despite the fact that there are many having issues with voodoo I am one of the many who it is working beautifully for.

AOSP ptIII (the Revenge of the RC)

We are starting a new thread as we enter a new phase of development.
We are beyond confident @ this point that we are where we need to be. We are now working on new init.rc and init.mapphone_cdma.rc that will be able to boot a cm7 atrix nightly.
As of now we only have aceoyame working on these and wish to solicit ideas from those who may be more experienced or who have a keen eye for the obvious.
We will be test flashing this first run shortly. Lets keep this thread clean. We are expecting only comments relating to the new .rc's or pointing out obvious shortcomings of our method.
Expect a test flash to be posted here shortly so others can try along.
So without further ado... here are the initial versions of the inits as modified by aceoyame..
init.mapphone_cdma.rc http://pastebin.com/N3CFNrBX
init.rc http://pastebin.com/KdpL6eKC
Help and comments are welcome...
If you apprecieate our work please hit THANKS on the appropriate post to let us know you guys care and to keep the thread un-cluttered. So far with the other threads it seems we only have about 20 or so users who are looking forward to this.
There is an excellent thread here.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1372293 started by ashclepdia that can be used for speculation, thanks, etc...
Thanks again to the many users here for helping during the sbf flashing phase.. we may need your help again soon.
And last but not least thanks again to dragonzkiller for taking the time from his busy schedule to get us past the last hurtle.
So fu$king excited! Thanks guys!

While reading init.mapphone_cdma.rc i noticed like 3 mount points referencing yaffs2. From what I understood, yaffs2 isn't supported by the X2. That was the only glaring thing I saw so far.
Keep up the great work
Edit: Everyone, Please lets keep on topic. If you have any questions or you want to say thanks please use this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1372293
We need to keep this topic clean for the sake of development.
Thanks
can someone explain whats this for and what it does?
Does it improve something?
Makes my phone faster?
Last longer?
Took better photo and video?
Better sound quality?
Tnx

This is me asking for all of the x2 devs to pitch in and help with CM now that we have 2nd init going. The thing holding us back atm is our init scripts, the one were using bombs out shortly before boot animation (before adb runs) any help would be awesome!
Do you have link to CM7 including 2nd init you are testing with?
I want to push it into my phone when I get a chance this weekend and see whether I can help.
Thanks.
Well its a new day.. and i begin my holliday break.. Gonna spend a good bit of it working on this. I have some new approaches I am going to try today. Hopfully we can get some good information from the upcoming tests.

We intend to release a testing package shortly, once it is logging some sort of usefull data for us. In its current conditions it is not very informative. Rather then spending time getting people up to speed on it.. i am gonna try to get it to a point that it is more useful and self explanatory.
Ideally someone with more experience booting on second init devices will come along and give us a nudge to speed things up
In the meantime i have re-written our hijack to work along side our current X2 bootstap so that will save us some sbf time.
Hang in there.. We are getting close. Thanks for everyones support.
Probably should've posted this earlier, but I have a fairly powerful system. I could compile for you guys.

So I take it the script I sent you over helped a lot? It's good to see that! If you're guys' init script works I can patch them into an actual CM7 build for the X2 (So that we can have a device config, and eventually nightlies for it).

Don't worry about trying to compile anything yet. For a few reasons:
They're only patching an ATRIX build, not compiling yet
We don't have a full device setup for the X2 (i'm working on that now)
My computer is more than powerful enough to start releasing office DX2-Dev-Team betas from the repo, so don't worry about compiling yet
I will be on irc @ #X2-AOSP all night for the specific discussion of this thread.
So after a late night in IRC we managed to past 1 of the 2 hurdles we were trying to solve. Thanks to all that helped.
We were able to get some logcat action going!!
One more hurdle to pass and we are going to be VERY CLOSE.
Thanks again for those that were up late night working on this..
Which hurdle?
Tapped from my tweaked out DX2

Duh moment lol,
Tapped from my tweaked out DX2
is this the lockboot loader you guys are trying to crack?
If so, would this allow people to install or port ics? or copy the fix for blue tint on camera on droid 3?
Tnx

ICS Native Tethering via Factory Mode

My first post, was very interested in getting native tethering working on ICS leak UCLD3. I wasn't going to post as I saw the work by Electron73 but then noticed that his mod was 15-16MB's. This is substantially smaller, possibly not as tested, but enables factory mode in TetheringManager.apk
Let me know your thought's CWM flashable, tested only on UCLD3
Wow. Just joined and first post is code. Thanks and welcome to the forum. I think I'll pass for now though.
Been a lurker for sometime, just thought i would contribute. Maybe a write-up is more in order to accompany. But i don't blame ya!

I was noticing there are 7 views on the attachment, I can understand people being leery of my first post being code, compiled at that.
Please respond if you've tried it, and if not, let me know if I posted a write up of the process of manually editing the TetheringManager.apk file to enable factory mode if you would be interested? and maybe more comfortable with the compiled code itself?
I'm looking to try and start contributing more to the scene, but my initial response thus far has been slightly disheartening.
Granted, i'm not cyanogen or any of the other greats. Just a little fish trying to make some contributions.
Thanks!

I can only assume that ur assumption is correct about people be leary about your first post being code. The only thing that I have to say, is hang in there, or maybe talk to one of our devs and let them look at your code. As you reputation grows so will people trust of your code... Don't let it get you down though people will come around...

Thanks for your additional posts, Cosmo. I agree with Squish. That is good advise. And please don't let it get you down. Your efforts are appreciated. Thank you for understanding our apprehension to try it out.
So, here's is what I did, so far.
1) Downloaded and scanned the zip file on my PC. No problems.
2) Unzipped and looked at the contents. I am not a dev but I am an IT geek and I see nothing scary about the contained files.
I'm trying a few other things and will be back.
Awesome thanks for taking a second look. Mostly a one line patch albeit i did modify the APN check to match at least what my device has(AT&T PTA). It was however unnecessary.

just flash this as well - working excellent!
Just wished we can customize the SSID - i like naming mine Trojan Detected
You can. Just click where it says Portable WIFI Hotspot (next to the on/of switch), then click settings/options.

Worked great. Thank you
Glad to see it getting some use, once the UCLE2 leak is out for mass consumption, I'll flash and update as to weather this needs to be updated or not. I currently assume not.
I had a quick peek through the APK with apktool and everything looks kosher at first glance. Cosmo, maybe you can post the code diffs you used to patch the app? I replaced TetheringManager.apk on my TELUS SGH-I717 running the Hybrid ROM (based on UCLD3), and so far it seems to be working fine!
I figure instead of posting the diff's posting the SVN link would be better.

[GUIDE] The All In One Guide!

All-In-One Guide
By: ilxaot

Introduction -
Okay, so our phone's a tad.. odd. At least, the American variant is. Thanks to T-Maybe and LGay our bootloader is locked, and has baffled plenty of users. Look at our forum views and the people that visit, but don't become members? I understand some of them are lazy and such, but many are driven away by the current "methods" to unlocking the bootloader for full customization. So, I've come here to sort everything into one nice little thread, because I'm bored and I have nothing to do on my Friday night. Unlike much of my generation, I don't leave high school to go to parties and consume kegs until I puke, roll blunts until I fly, or get on speed and run around around naked eating people's eyeballs out. I prefer to sit inside and type guides ^-^ So, without further ado, let's begin, shall we?
BTW: To anybody (Many people) who saw my Unlocked Bootloader Mods thread, this will include much of that, and other sections. Read onn maties.
Table of Contents
-Introduction (You read this.. I hope)
-Table of Contents (I wonder where that would be?)
-Getting Started (This is for the newbzors. Veteran users, read on)
-What's this bootloader thing? (A spiral of condemnation)
-The Fork in the Road (Choices, choices, choices)
-Now, what can I do with root? (Gee, I wonder what.)
-My phone is slow, can I have mods? (Sure!)
-My apps suck, can I have apps? (Of course not.)
-Bye (Read this and I'll feel cared for)
Getting Started
Okay, so, first off, if you're new, welcome to the forums! There's a lot of great guys here. Some are complete.. Well, I won't say that publicly. There are certain characters who I'm not fond of, but most of them are a fantastic group of guys! So, if you ever need help with something, ask one of these guys: @kuma82, @BioDesigner48, @Lelus, @carloswii5. They're awesome ^-^
So, with that being said, here's our current situation. We have a nice mid-high range phone. We CAN root it easily, however, we cannot unlock our bootloader using the standardized "adb reboot oem-unlock" command. Don't panic! It's really no need to get confused. I'll make this as simple as possible, until even the stupid little iSheep can understand a portion(;
So basically, we have root on the majority of our devices. What we do NOT have, is a majority of unlocked bootloaders. It seems quite randomized and pretty thrown-together if you ask me, so I haven't exactly gotten into it. BUT! I have experimented with modifications and tweaks that affect the stock ROM, to make it more intense. So basically, this thread is about everything on this phone. Because I'm bored. That's why.
What's This Bootloader Thing?
Remember how I said I'd make it simple to where iSheep, iDiots, iTards, and iPreps could understand? Well, here we go. Experienced users brace yourselves! Unspecific noob answer inbound! The bootloader, can be thought of, as what "loads" the "boot." I'll leave it at that. Since it's locked, you can't modify the "boot," therefore the system is left largely unchanged. There are a great plenty questions and a great less amount of confident answers, but with luck, and some faith, you can unlock it! Here are some links to some guides if you're interested.
Unspecific, outdated - HERE
Specific, Recent - HERE
Video, Specific - HERE
Best of luck. If you're intimidated, keep reading this post. Honestly, there's still some work left to be done ^-^
The Fork In The Road
Well, now you have a choice. You can either root, install busybox, obtain a "bootstrap" recovery, and flash mods to your build.prop and stuff for dayzzz. Or, you can take the dark, usually antagonizing way out, the unlocking of the bootloader. Best of luck ^-^ Simply remember that if you FUBAR your phone we aren't liable.
Personally, I recommend sticking with root and not unlocking the bootloader. But that's just me. Have I tried to unlock before? Yes, and I didn't succeed (PC hates me...) but I'm happy enough on my modded stock ROM.
Now, What Can I Do With Root?
This is as easy as it gets. HERE
Rooted? That's right! Go get 'em boy! Kidding, that's easy. Now, go to the Play Store and download a "Busybox" app, and install busybox. Then, go to THIS thread and install the L9 Bootstrap Recovery. It's easy as 1,2,3. Download, open, install. ^-^ I'd also recommend finding some "Xposed" framework modules, they're increasing in popularity. Plenty of them can be found on the web and especially these forums. (derp) You're incredibly welcome
Now, here's a brief list of things you can do!
-Theme your phone with XThemes here!
-Get more memory on your phone here!
-Overclock your phone here!
-Kick people from your WiFi here!
-Snoop through people's data over WiFi here!
-Hack your games here!
-Backup your phone here!
-Tether your phone here!
My phone is slow, Can I have mods?
Sure! I'll post a link to the Development and Hacking section of the General XDA forums. This is where developer modify and tweak stock Android files such as the build.prop (incredibly modifiable) and init.d scripts. Go to the Play Store and search "init.d" and find an app that installs it for you. It's quite simple, really. Now, are you ready?!
Go here. You're welcome. Find a mod that suits you, download it to your SD card, boot into recovery, and FLASH IT! MUAHAHA.
Now, if you'd like an old thread of mine with mods I found to work well together to improve our specific device, go visit this thread. It got popular at one point ^-^ Then I got tired of updating it with new mods. Lulz.
P.S. My personal favorite is the CrossBreeder mod.
My apps suck, can I have apps?
Sure! When I decide to make this section. It's 11:48 and I'm incredibly tired and craving a nice, tall glass of water. So, when I get bored again, I'll update this section. (Forewarning: There's a good bit of apps ;D) So, yeah. Sorry about this whole "I'm too lazy to finish this guide come back later" thing.
Bye
^^ Yepp. Adios. Tankzz ferr reeding. :3
My name is, my name is, not slim shady, lol
:good: Thanks for helping everyone out, and thanks for you kind words.

Lol I wonder if that's an old account I made way back when. I kind of remember making a account, but can't really remember.
Oh crap! Kuma82. My bad XD I'll fix it when I update it. On my phone ATM/:
