My Atrix doesn't seem to be able to play any of my .mkv video files. Is anyone else having this problem? My captivate worked fine with the exact same movies. I have also tried downloading other video players such as rockplayer, mVideoPlayer and doubletwist but I am getting the same "sorry, this video cannot be played" or "file cannot be displayed or played" message.
i have also tried the copying the videos to both my external sd card and my internal memory, no luck.
The captivate seemed to support a lot of video formats with out resizing ....what does the atrix support
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
Yeah, Im having problems with that too. All my videos are either too small or can't play. Anyone know the ins and outs of the attrix media capabilities?
Ok, I just tried an .mp4 file with no success as well. this can't possible be correct. I tried 5 different media players, including the stock one.
mp4s work for me, but not mkvs with the same settings. Tegra 2 only supports baseline H264.
The Atrix only supports (3GPP) .3gp and MPEG-4) .mp4 video formats.
Codec support is for H.263, H.264 AVC, MPEG-4 SP and VP8
So far I haven't gotten the phone to play any of its said supported videos. I too had the captivate and am now very disappointed in the Atrix codec support. Maybe we were spoiled with the captivate?
Only AVI's play. Nothing else. Hopefully this will be remedied by Moto before anyone else.

That's because mostly any MPeg4 or H.264 video you try to play is high-profile. The Tegra 2 apparently only supports the baseline codec.
so are there any downloads out there that would supply the necessary codecs, or maybe another player (i'v already tried 5). i thought i got away from having to convert all of my videos when i got rid of my iphone
What pisses me off is I cannot even use DLNA to stream video to my phone since NOTHING is compatible.
I'm able to stream from my DVR and my Windows Media systems to any PC or DLNA equipped device in my house except for my Atrix.
The list of things that I like about this phone are slowly being overpowered by the list of crap that I should have to be dealing with.
This is supposed to be the "most powerful smartphone" on the market.
My 3 year old 3GS does more with less hacking.
And yeah... I threw up a little in my mouth when I said that as I hate having to hack my phone to get basic functionality.

Doesn't work with DirecTV DVR's.
I have the whole home service so I can play any movie on any TV or PC in my house.
Any DLNA equipped device works too... except for the Atrix of course.
I was able to play a 700+ MB avi file.
I was able to play tron in 264 mkv fine here.

Yeah right. Motorola will fix it.
I bought a Tegra 2 device that can't play my 720p mkv movies. Perfect.

mkv is a container, h264 is a codec
almost all phones can decode h264, xvid, divx, x264, etc, BUT in MP4 container.
just remux your files without recompress, its very quickly, just a few seconds using some program like YAMB or staxrip's just mux option.
if I have an avi file compressed with xvid my x10 can not play it with hardware decoders, but if I mux this avi in an mp4 file my x10 can play it very smooth, and remux its just take a half minute.
http://yamb.unite-video.com/
btw, if you want test, put any HD youtube video (MP4 high profile, wich is playable on atrix) and remux into MKV without recompress, I mean just mux, and try to play on atrix.
Chinese tablets and some branded phones can recognize MKV container, but it doesn't make a difference because make a playable video for your mobile it will take just a few seconds

I'd like to see some proof that high profile plays on the atrix currently. Main profile with tweaking plays choppy, but high profile in my experience does not work at all. Also as a clarification, x264 is a fully functional h264 encoder, and can be used to create bluray quality video
There are a few video containers supported by the player shipped with the atrix.
*.avi
*.mp4
*.3gp
Having said those, the codecs that can be inside an AVI file are as follows:
Video: xvid/divx (h.263)... owait noone cares about the other ones. At any res 1080p and lower resized to MOD16
Audio: mp3... again noone cares about the other ones
Inside the MP4 you can have the following:
Video: xvid/divx/h263/h264 (in BASELINE or HIGHLY MODIFIED MAIN profiles only) at any res 1080p and lower resized to MOD16
Audio: AAC (LC or HC; avoid multichannel as it creates an annoying echo) /AMR
*.3gp is the format that a lot of current handheld devices can capture in. They have their own specific codecs depending on the device, but video that I captured with my old sony ericsson s710a plays flawlessly on all my newer devices.
As for MKV... I wish it supported it. I started using QQplayer for MKV with very low bitrate xvid/mp3 combos for subtitles and they play OK, just not well. Settings I have found that work well with QQplayer and xvid for MKV is any flavor of 480p mod16 resized @~1500kb/s, and mp3 of an ABR of 112 downsampled to 44.1khz. h264 inside mkv though... not happening.
Care to explian where's the "mux" option in the program you linked?
I've had a look around and this issue has been brought up a few times, but then just brushed over without a concrete answer.
I have a few MKVs that I want to play on my phone, but that don't have sound.
I've tried with the stock player and with Mplayer.
I've spent the last few hours googling how to convert MKVs to AVIs and whatnot and tried a few times all unsuccessful.
I don't really want to covert them anyway, they all work fine, just not on the phone.
The video plays smoothly, and subtitles show up if it has them, just no sound.
How can I fix this?
OGG Vorbis audio track? Try Moboplayer. I just found out it'll read and play it, subs included.
That's what I'm using, Moboplayer and the stock player.
No sound from either.
I just noticed Moboplayer has a bunc of codecs in the market, do I need to install one of them? Which one?
well i have sound with stock player and mkv.... what sound is it ? DTS, DD ?
i use Vplayer, works fine for me. shows picture sound and subs

Most mkv's contain an ac3 soundtrack.
The SII doesn't like that.
I convert mkv's to mp4 now with avidemux.
With these settings:
- video: copy
- audio: AAC
Works like a charm!
Edit: it's a 'cheap' conversion, it goes very fast because only the audio track is converted.

The Mobo Player app should have an option to point you to the correct codec.
If you don't install the codec then it will only play the same formats as the stock video player.
I use mVideoPlayer, works fine for all of mine.
But I think DicePlayer has the best support for audio codecs, though it's only free for a trial period and doesn't support embedded subs (AFAIK).
I have these installed permanently as one of them usually does the job, I usually try stock first followed by mobo, then rock with Act1 and QQ as backups.
Dice is probably the best but isnt free.
Dice
mobo
rockplayer
act1
qq player
I have tried pretty much all other players, honestly dont waste your time or money on any of the others.
EDIT - sorry I forgot, since moving to this Phone I hace scrapped qq for everything and rock for HD stuff as it doesnt seem to decode as well as stock or mobo, always try stock first.
On my GS2 I do not see any option Mobo Player to point me to the correct codec, any clue?

I like this idea best, it means I can play through the stock player, so I don't need to have unnecessary apps. I do like the stock player.
Is there any quality loss when doing this?
Will embedded subtitles carry over?
Edit: I just tried this, and the file it pushed out had a really low framerate. I could see jaggeddyness in frames.
Mobo is good. it's free.
Mobo's ffmpeg codec support almost all codecs.
but ffmpeg sw codec use CPU more than HW codec.
when playing 720p H.264+DTS mkv. mobo ( or rock ... ) sw codec use almost 100% CPU power.
Stock Player and DicePlayer use only 20-40% of CPU power. ( Audio codec use cpu.. )
SW codec players use lossy color convert and resize routine.
dithering or color loss will occur. ( you can see when playing dark scene )
HW Codec's Pros.
1. Performance ( Can Play 1080p )
2. Battery
3. image quality
Cons.
1. Codec compatibility ( but SGS2's HW codec is AWESOME. )
2. not supported codecs ( RMVB, VP6/7.. )
** dice player 1.1.2 add mkv embedded subs.

Generally I get good results, but haven't tried it with movies yet.
Only 720p series with 25fps, no subtitles.
Back at my desktop tonight I will try a movie with subs.
The file I tried was a movie, 720p, no subs.
I don't know what it's framerate was, but it's pretty damn high. It looks seamless.
When I tried loading it with the app, I got this error. Maybe it is actually important and not to be overlooked?
I answered no.

I answered no every time without much problems. Forwarding in the stock player seems a little slow sometimes but that might be normal.
25 is pretty standard for series I believe.
Converting gives the advantage of hardware acceleration and I do not want to loose that.

Diceplayer give you hw acceleration without converting.
As promised...
Promised a follow-up with an mkv with subtitles.
I must admit I didn't get it to work yet.
Unclear to me if it is even possible, I found some info that the stock player will accept separate subtitles like .srt but I have not confirmed that yet.
Ran across another problem that put me off track.
Tried a conversion to mp4 with a movie but didn't think about the size restrictions.
Could not connect in Storage mode for some reason, so I tried to use SD-cards / usb-otg. No succes with 4 Gig+ files yet ~ using windows which has exFAT and NTFS, neither is working.
Possibly there is a filesystem that will do the job on Win7 and Android 2.3.3?
My research tells me that exFAT is not really available for Android, too tired atm to look for alternatives from the Win side.
Like USB-OTG very much, would like a way to get 4G+ files to my SII that way!
As I said, got sidetracked seriously ~ apologies if I got too far offtopic.
A good picture video on it? I'm wanting to convert a few movies, for a trip I'm taking soon.

w00t O_O ? please use one of the following software from android market.
1 : MX video player ( the best and IN CASE your video lags? just select one of those 3 decoders. )
2 : Moboplayer. almost same as MX with same functions such as setting brightness for video player only ( don't keep brightness on auto for this feature ) but i feel MX is better because of decoders.
Get them both in case one of it lags for high quality movies. because as far as i know, none lagged.
Why are you converting videos? they work directly. Try once any format you can think of. I tried Avi, MOV, mp4, rmvb, mkv. i bet other formats are supported too

I'm converting them so that I don't have movies that are 700mb on my phone... So that I can fit more on it...
Why is that? Is it because the file is softsubed instead of hardsubed? Can the default player in Galaxy S II play .srt files? Thanks.
not sure if the stock player can play .srt since i have any mkvs like that
but if stock don't want to, try either Mobo player or MX player ( the last update on the later is really nice with our SGS2).

Stock player plays .srt but you have to have it extract under the same name as the video file. Beside stock you could try Mx player, it's pretty amazing compared to stock.
just try another player..
like rock player..
Thanks guys! )
mvideoplayer is a great player and plays .srt files. I used to have this player and the only think made me change was that i bought the mhl cable to export the video through hdmi to my tv set and it couldn't display tha subs into the tv. Finally the solution to both was bsplayer. I hope i could answer your question and solve your problem.
I've got quite a lot of movies and videos but some play better than others on my Android Tablet and some just don't play at all.
Does anybody know if there is a preferred file format for movies and videos because there are too many to choose from?
I just don't know which of the many options I should consider from AVI, Xvid, Divx, H.264 and any other flavour you can think of.
Cheers

If you want a format that any device will play including tv's with usb connectors, portable players as well as android devices then an avi video file with xvid compression and mpeg 3 audio is the most accepted and standard video format.
But if you just want videos on android then mx player should play pretty much anything.

I wish i was as simple as throwing MX Player at everything but sadly some MP4 file formats play so bad that I get around 8-11 frames per second. Some other MP4 file
s work perfectly.
AVI files work a treat however its a bit of a lottery with MP4 files as I cant work out what kind they are.
My computers can do the number crunching to mask this problem but my lowly ASUS Pad TF300T struggles at times.
I should point out that I'm streaming the movies from a NAS box at the moment. I haven't tried running some of these movies from the internal hard drive.

It could be the app your using to stream, I found some apps would stream pretty badly from my wireless hard drive.
Ideally you could play a problem file on your android from the device itself to check it plays fine and if it does you will probably have to convert to avi if they play better for streaming.
There are a couple of dlna apps you could try, can't recall the names as I watch videos via a usb stick on my tv now, but play store has a few. Alternatively if the app your using allows you to alter its buffer size you could increase it which would help.
If you have a windows pc you can install vlc media player and use it to see the codecs used in the problem videos. You may find they all have something in common maybe like ac3 audio. If so you can convert audio easily to something less processor intensive with pc freeware like virtualdubmod.

MKV and MP4 have much advanced features than AVI/TS files.
If you use Diceplayer , MKV is the best format.
multiple audio track / embeded subtiles / no problems on HTTP streaming
but Diceplayer plays most of files without transcoding.
Try switching to full software rendering (video+audio) in MX video player instead of hardware rendering to get rid of chopping and out of sync audio. It'll use more battery but I haven't had a video yet that it didn't play.
