Has anybody been able to figure out or change how the Atrix uses the battery when being plugged in?
I've set my laptop to stop charging after it hits 85% and start charging only when it falls below 40% (which almost never does because I keep it plugged in). This prevents my laptop's batteries from cycling between 90%-100% all the time.
Is there a way to do this in an Android phone? The back gets hot when I use it while being plugged in, which suggests to me that the battery is in use.

This might be wishing the impossible but I was wondering if there any charger and/or dock on the market that will automatically cut the power when the phone is fully charged.
I know the concept is workable because I've seen a different product that works along the same principles - a trailing socket that completely cuts the power when the load drops.
This could be adapted to suit a phone charger so that when it drops to a trickle, the charger cuts the power completely.
I know it's probably unnecessary but the reason I'm asking is that I know it's not advisable to leave your phone on charge overnight but given how easily the HD chews it way through batteries, having to do so is bound to prove inevitable at some point and I'd like to avoid having to switch off my handset when it does happen (after all, what's the point in having a phone if you can't be contacted on it?).
I suppose the alternative is some sort of program that chimes when the handset is fully charged, so that I'd be woken up and can take it off but I'd rather have a good night's sleep

Why do you think that?
Surely the charging circuit is controlled by the handset, and it stops feeding power to the battery when it is fully charged...
Two parts.
Firstly, whilst there is a charge control circuit in the handset, that's all well and good whilst the handset is off but not so good if it's left on.
If the phone is off, it will charge 'til full then drop to a trickle charge to stay there without damaging the battery. If it's on, it will do the same thing, except when the phone checks in with the network or does anything else that uses the battery, the charge level will drop, the charger will ramp up to full power, hit maximum, drop back down to a trickle and so on - it's just not as good for the battery over time.
Secondly, it's better for the environment.
Since I first posted this, Carphone Warehouse in the UK has released a range of 'eco-chargers' for Nokia, SE and Samsung phones that cut out when the load drops (ie when the phone reaches full charge) and will stay off until the user presses a button on the wall plug.
It's a good idea, if a somewhat-impractical design. Placing the button on the wall plug is a bit stupid IMO.
I was actually using a Motorola wall charger at work recently and it seems it has the same function built-in.
When I checked to see if it was fully-charged, my HD wasn't showing as being connected to a charger, it was just showing a full battery. At first I thought it had been un-plugged it switched off by a colleague but when I checked, it wasn't. So I disconnected the phone and re-connected it and the charger symbol appeared in the bar at the top of the screen but, lo-and-behold, a few minutes later the same thing had happened.
Surely chargers these days are intelligent enough to drop to virtually zero output once the battery has charged and then only supply sufficient to maintain that charge.
It's not like leaving the tap on in the bathtub running overnight and flooding the bathroom.
The vast majority of chargers are capable of trickle charging but I already addressed that in my last post.
New to VM & Android. Picked up two Optimus V phones a couple of weeks ago. While on the wall charger, both exhibit different behaviors once they've reached full charge.
On one Optimus, once the phone is 100% charged, it says "Full Charge" (or "Fully") on the lock screen. As it stays on the wall charger, the status remains full charge - there is no discharge.
However, on the other Optimus, once it reaches 100% charge, there is no mention of any charging status on the lock screen. And when I check the status in the settings, the phone shows that it is discharging, even though it remains on the wall charger.
The discharging status bears itself out as it remains on the charger, I'll eventually see the percentage of battery life drop.
Did I inadvertently switch a setting? The phone discharging itself once it reaches full charge even when on the wall charger is a problem. This is especially evident when I leave the phone on the charger overnight. In the morning, instead of starting the day fully charged, I'll see it at about 80% charged.
Thanks for any help.
There are not any settings in the Android operating system that affect charging directly. This is more a function of the kernel/hardware specific. This is why some phones can charge while off and others must be turned on. Try trading chargers/batteries between the two phones and see if the problem follows the hardware. Be sure and do this one part at a time, i.e. first trade batteries. Then if that isn't it trade chargers. You could have a bad battery and/ or charger. Also, are you rooted? Running custom Rom? These factors can also affect your situation.
Thanks for your advice. I followed what you instructed. First, switched the chargers to no avail. I changed the batteries and still no change.
It's odd to see two different behaviors exhibited by the same model phone. Both phone are unrooted running stock rom. As I indicated, one phone (which I consider the normal one) does not discharge as long as it's plugged in. The second phone starts discharging once full, even though it's plugged in.
The problem is when I leave it plugged in overnight - if I don't catch it at the moment it reaches complete charge, it'll discharge. Since I'm asleep when the phone reaches a full charge sometime in the night, by the time I wake up, I'll leave the home with a phone that is 60-80% charged.
I'll chalk this up to something faulty with the board and just turn it back in to Target.
It was working fine before I went to bed last night, then I let it charge for the night since that battery was at about 4%, But this morning it won't turn on at all. The battery feels warm as if its been charging but nothing seems to be making it turn on. Any ideas?

If it was my phone here is what I would do.
First I would see if the phone charges the battery by putting the battery into
the phone and plug the usb cable from phone into the wall charger or into
the computer.
If the display on phone shows a picture of a battery charging let it charge
for an hour more or less and try turning on the phone.
If the phone is not charging the battery I would purchase a cheapy battery
charger and battery combo on eBay.
You can find this combo on eBay for less than $8 bucks shipped for both the battery and charger:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1800m-BATTE...045605?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item43aa9a4465
(even if you decide to return and exchange the phone its still a good thing to have a spare battery and charger)
Check it out.
Good Luck!

are you on cm7? not sure about the s2 (never had the issue), but i know that on the infuse, there was a problem (or maybe it was intentional) with low power charging mode (phone wouldn't charge when off).
i think this can be solved by trying to charge the phone via your computer usb, as opposed to your OEM wall charger.
Thanks for the suggestion. It definitely isn't showing the picture of the battery when its plugged in to the wall or the computer. I'm debating the battery charger combo you linked.
I actually am. But I have it plugged to my computer and nothings changed.
Time for some trouble shooting.
Start eliminating possibilities. You need to determine where the problem is.
From what you say, it seems possible that the battery is completely discharged but not recharging. That could be a bad battery or it could be the phone.
If you know someone else with an SGS II, try inserting their battery temporarily to see if your phone will boot. If you don't know someone else, maybe you can borrow a charged battery from the store where you bought it.
Continue on until you pinpoint the problem.
Do NOT buy a "cheapie" battery for your SGS2. Unless you want to eisk causing damage. The stock battery for the SGS2 has NFC technology built into it. Using anything other than OEM could cause damage/performance issues to your phone, and void the warranty.

Have goh tried a battery pull? Unplug the phone, pull the battery and let sit for a few minutes to allow tbe IC's to discharge. Put battery back in and try powering up the device. Good luck.

Similar issue and got phone fixed finally
Have had similar issue as yours. Cable charger was plugged into the phone to be charged at night and was surprised to find that the phone became hot and battery was not charged at the next morning, in fact the battery level got lower than it was before charging.
Notes:
- ROM in use: AOCP version 7.2 (Android 4.4.2)
- Kernel in use: Version 3.0.101 [email protected] #3
Here are some tests done and the observations after getting a charger with a slot to place the removed battery for charging:
1. Charging via USB cable connected to PC:
- With the phone turned on, battery charging icon is only displayed after some wiggling at the charging port. The phone got charged further to 100% when the initial remaining battery level is 90%. However, when the initial battery level was less than 50%, the battery level continued dropping ALTHOUGH the battery charging icon was displayed.
- With the phone turned off, battery charging icon is only displayed after some wiggling at the charging port. When the initial battery level was less than 50%, the battery charging icon displayed only a battery level of 1% and the battery level did not increase at all after 15 minutes of charging.
Initially suspected that it was a dead battery issue and bought an i9100 battery, I thought it was a compatible battery at first. With the i9100 battery, I repeated the above tests.
- With the phone turned off, battery charging icon is NOT displayed but the phone screen flashed continuously, and at times the phone is turned on automatically as the USB charging port is inserted. When the phone is turned on, the charging proceeded as the above sentence.
Upon searching the forum, I found that i777 has a different battery with NFC chip and i9100 battery has reported to cause issues during charging on i777 devices. There was also a Chinese forum which mentioned that the battery compatibility issues should have been overcome in ROM with Android version 4.0 and above.
I then bought a new i777 compatible battery and tested charging via USB cable. The observations are same as the first battery as at 1.
With the battery issues possibility eliminated, I approached a phone technician to examine the phone by telling him that the phone couldn't be charged and the battery level continued dropping even with the battery charging icon displayed. The phone technician then thought that the USB charging port to be the cause of the charging issue and replaced it. The replaced part is the small metal housing where the USB cable is inserted, and is replaced by heating the old metal housing and replacing it with new part by soldering.
The phone could be charged with USB cable as usual after the part replacement and all the batteries are found to be still working fine. Ended up with 2 i777 batteries and a i9100 battery, may be I could continue using this phone for at least another 5 years down the road.
Ok - this is completely nuts. When I place my Photon ON my eee transformer, or my wifes TouchPad, the Photon becomes unresponsive. Pressing and holding the power button does nothing. I have to remove the battery or plug it in. In the past, it would reboot and everything would be fine. Battery would appear to be at the same (or near) charge level.
I would take pains to not place the phone near those devices and I have not had the phone lock up. Today I absentmindedly placed a full charge (near full, unplugged 100% charge @ 12:30pm) and placed the phone onto the transformer @ 1:00pm. I checked @ 1:45 and it was unresponsive. I placed the phone on the charger and it came to life... only now the battery was completely drained!
Has anyone else experienced this? Is there a fix or do I just have to keep my phone from other electrical items?
I recharged the phone it went from <5% charge to 100% in less than 30 minutes, so I guess it didn't totally discharge the battery - something just made it think it was discharged.
All-in-all still a very weird happening.
I'm typing this while my Photon is resting on my Touchpad and it's not freezing. How long does it take for it to become unresponsive?
As stated in the OP - 45 minutes. I did not use it during that time.
I have a rather large electrical box that I place my phone on at work while it charges. I see the same thing happen often. The battery will falsely discharge (not sure how it can discharge faster than a 1A capable rated charger can charge it but whatever) I will come back to my phone later and it will have shutdown and is now in the 'charge mode', the one where say you shut your phone down and then plug in the charger and the 'battery' shows up, and it will often be very low.
Normally I just power the phone back on and unplug it and all is good.
First I don't think anything is wrong with my device but just curious if anyone else noticed this.
1. Fully Powered off device
2. Plug in charger (little battery charging icon animates)
3. This is where it gets strange I let it get to 100% but didn't unplug it (left it plugged in all night like I usually do on all my devices) , next morning I check the charge and it showed 97%
so I assume the phone circuitry shuts off the charger after it's fully charged to prevent overheating or whatever, or the charger shuts off, strange why I got a 3% drain though with it completely off...
so far I have only tried with the official charger and cable, curious if anyone else had this issue.
besides for that the battery in this device seems good I can get about 1 day 1/2 moderate / heavy use out of it
Perhaps it's the boot animation etc?

I guess it could be if it runs in the background , it just was strange to me since my samsung tablet will always show 100% even if I leave it plugged in forever, maybe lithium-ion (samsung) and lithium-poly (xiaomi) have different charging rules like maybe you can't float charge lithium poly (just guessing)
